Heterometallic 3d-4f Alkoxide Precursors for the Synthesis of Binary Oxide Nanomaterials

In this study, a new method for the synthesis of heterometallic 3d-4f alkoxides by the direct reaction of metallic lanthanides (La, Pr, Nd, Gd) with MCl₂ (M = Mn, Ni, Co) in 2-methoxyethanol was developed. The method was applied to the synthesis of the heterometallic oxo-alkoxide clusters [Ln₄Mn₂(μ₆-O)(μ₃-OR)₈(HOR)_xCl₆] (Ln = La (1), Nd (2), Gd (3); x = 0, 2, 4); [Pr₄M₂(μ₆-O)(μ₃-OR)₈(HOR)_xCl₆] (M = Co (4), Ni (5); x = 2, 4); and [Ln₄Mn₂(μ₃-OH)₂(μ₃-OR)₄(μ-OR)₄(μ-Cl)₂(HOR)₄Cl₆] (Ln = La (11) and Pr (12)). Mechanistic investigation led to the isolation of the homo- and heterometallic intermediates [Pr(μ-OR)(μ-Cl)(HOR)Cl]_n (6), [Co₄(μ₃-OR)₄(HOR)₄Cl₄] (7), [Ni₄(μ₃-OR)₄(HOEt)₄Cl₄] (8), [Mn₄(μ₃-OR)₄(HOR)₂(HOEt)₂Cl₄] (9), and [Nd(HOR)₄Cl][CoCl₄] (10). In the presence of an external M(II) source at 1100 °C, 1-4 and 12 were selectively converted into binary metal oxide nanomaterials with trigonal or orthorhombic perovskite structures, i.e., LaMnO₃, GdMnO₃, NdMnO₃, Pr_0.9MnO₃, and PrCoO₃. Compound 5 decomposed into a mixture of homo- and heterometallic oxides. The method presented provides a valuable platform for the preparation of advanced heterometallic oxide materials with promising magnetic, luminescence, and/or catalytic applications.

Polynuclear Iron(II) Pyridonates: Synthesis and Reactivity of Fe4 and Fe5 Clusters

The combination of pyridonate ligands with transition metal ions enables the synthesis of an especially rich set of diverse coordination compounds involving various κ- and μ-bonding modes and higher nuclearities. With iron(II) ions, this chemical space is rather poorly explored beyond some biomimetic models of the pyridone iron-containing hydrogenase. Here, the topologically new Fe₅ and Fe₄ clusters, Fe₅(L^H)₆[N(SiMe₃)₂]₄ (1) and Fe₄(L^Me)₆[N(SiMe₃)₂]₂ (2), were synthesized (L^H = 2-pyridonate; L^Me = 6-methyl-2-pyridonate). Complex 1 contained an unprecedented diamondoid Fe@Fe₄ tetrahedron with a central-to-peripheral Fe-Fe distance of ∼3.1 Å. The crystal structure of complex 2 displayed an Fe₄O₆ butterfly motif containing a planar Fe₄ arrangement. Mössbauer spectroscopy confirmed the high-spin ferrous character of all iron ions. SQUID magnetometry reveals that the Fe(II) ions are involved in weak magnetic exchange coupling across the pyridonate bridges that results in antiferromagnetic interactions. The Fe₄ cluster exhibits slow relaxation of magnetization under an applied magnetic field with an effective energy barrier of 38.5 K, rarely observed among the very rare examples of Fe(II) cluster-based single-molecule magnets. Studies of protolytic substitution of the amido ligands demonstrated the lability of the diamondoid Fe₅ core in 1 and the stability of the Fe₄ rhomboid in 2.

Accurate Magnetic Couplings in Chromium-Based Molecular Rings from Broken-Symmetry Calculations within Density Functional Theory

We present a comprehensive analysis of magnetic coupling in a group of three popular chromium-based molecular rings, the homometallic Cr₈ ring and the heterometallic Cr₇Ni and Cr₇Zn molecules. We show conclusively that the broken symmetry approach within density functional theory (DFT), based on suitable conventional or range-separated hybrid functionals, provides a quantitatively reliable tool to extract magnetic exchange coupling parameters in all rings considered, which opens a window for additional applications in molecular magnetism. We further show that a nonempirical model spin Hamiltonian, based on the parameters extracted from DFT, leads to excellent agreement with experimental susceptibility data and energy spectra. Moreover, based on an optimally tuned range-separated hybrid functional approach, we find that gas-phase gaps of the studied molecular rings are much larger than previously calculated and discuss the implications of the revised electronic structure to potential applications in molecular spintronics.

Synthesis and magneto-structural studies on a new family of carbonato bridged 3d–4f complexes featuring a [CoII3LnIII3(CO3)] (Ln = La, Gd, Tb, Dy and Ho) core: slow magnetic relaxation displayed by the cobalt(ii)–dysprosium(iii) analogue

A new series of carbonato-bridged complexes containing a CoII3LnIII3 core have been synthesized.
