Reversible Electronic Energy Transfer (Homo-FRET) in Cyclic Molecular and Supramolecular Systems: Fluorescence Anisotropy Decays for the Isotropic Interaction

Reversible electronic energy transfer (homo-FRET) in cyclic multichromophoric systems is studied for sets of n identical fluorophores arranged in regular polygons (triangle, square, pentagon, etc.). A general analytic expression for the anisotropy decay is obtained for a regular polygon of any order, under the assumptions of isotropic interaction and nearest-neighbor FRET. A graphical way of connecting the decay form and polygon geometry based on the Frost circle is also presented. The consequences of the relaxation of these assumptions on the anisotropy decay are also discussed and analyzed in detail for the heptagon.

Structure-Based Theory of Fluctuation-Induced Energy Transfer in a Molecular Dyad

We present a microscopic theory for the description of fluctuation-induced excitation energy transfer in chromophore dimers to explain experimental data on a perylene biscarboximide dyad with orthogonal transition dipole moments. Our non-Condon extension of Förster theory takes into account the fluctuations of excitonic couplings linear and quadratic in the normal coordinates, treated microscopically by quantum chemical/electrostatic calculations. The modulation of the optical transition energies of the chromophores is inferred from optical spectra of the isolated chromophores. The application of the theory to the considered dyad reveals a two to three order of magnitude increase in the rate constant by non-Condon effects. These effects are found to be dominated by fluctuations linear in the normal coordinates and provide a structure-based qualitative interpretation of the experimental time constant for energy transfer as well as its dependence on temperature.

Energy transfer and charge separation dynamics in photoexcited pyrene-bodipy molecular dyads

The photophysical properties of two pyrene-bodipy molecular dyads, composed of a phenyl-pyrene (Py-Ph) linked to the meso position of a bodipy (BD) molecule with either H-atoms (BD1) or ethyl groups (BD2) at the 2,6 positions, are investigated by stationary, nanosecond and femtosecond spectroscopy. The properties of these dyads (Py-Ph-BD1 and Py-Ph-BD2) are compared to those of their constituent chromophores in two solvents namely 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) and acetonitrile (ACN). Stationary spectroscopy reveals a weak coupling among the subunits in both dyads. Excitation of the pyrene (Py) subunit leads to emission that is totally governed by the BD subunits in both dyads pointing to excitation energy transfer (EET) from the Py to BD chromophore. Femtosecond fluorescence and transient absorption spectroscopy reveal that EET takes place within 0.3-0.5 ps and is mostly independent of the solvent and the type of the BD subunit. The EET lifetime is in reasonable agreement with that predicted by Förster theory. After EET has taken place, Py-Ph-BD1 in DCE and Py-Ph-BD2 in both solvents decay mainly radiatively to the ground state with 3.5-5.0 ns lifetimes which are similar to those of the individual BD chromophores. However, the excited state of Py-Ph-BD1 in ACN is quenched having a lifetime of 1 ns. This points to the opening of an additional non-radiative channel of the excited state of Py-Ph-BD1 in this solvent, most probably charge separation (CS). Target analysis of the TA spectra has shown that the CS follows inverted kinetics and is substantially slower than the recombination of the charge-separated state. Occurrence of CS with Py-Ph-BD1 in ACN is also supported by energetic considerations. The above results indicate that only a small change in the structure of the BD units incorporated in the dyads significantly affects the excited state dynamics leading either to a dyad with long lifetime and high fluorescence quantum yield or to a dyad with ability to undergo CS.

Towards Efficient Spectral Converters through Materials Design for Luminescent Solar Devices

Single-junction photovoltaic devices exhibit a bottleneck in their efficiency due to incomplete or inefficient harvesting of photons in the low- or high-energy regions of the solar spectrum. Spectral converters can be used to convert solar photons into energies that are more effectively captured by the photovoltaic device through a photoluminescence process. Here, recent advances in the fields of luminescent solar concentration, luminescent downshifting, and upconversion are discussed. The focus is specifically on the role that materials science has to play in overcoming barriers in the optical performance in all spectral converters and on their successful integration with both established (e.g., c-Si, GaAs) and emerging (perovskite, organic, dye-sensitized) cell types. Current challenges and emerging research directions, which need to be addressed for the development of next-generation luminescent solar devices, are also discussed.

Photoinduced charge recombination in dipolar D-A-A photonic liquid crystal polymorphs

A hexylalkoxy dipolar D-A-A molecule [7-(4-N,N-(bis(4-hexyloxyphenyl)amino)phenyl)-2,1,3-(benzothia-diazol-4-yl)methylene]propane-dinitrile, (C6-TPA-BT-CN) has been synthesized and the photophysics studied via femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy (FsTA) in toluene and in amorphous and liquid crystalline spherulite thin films. Two spherulite macromolecular crystalline phases (banded, and non-banded) were observed through concentration dependent, solution processing techniques and are birefringent with a negative sign of elongation. A dramatic change in the electronic absorption from blue in amorphous films to green in spherulites was observed, and the molecular orientation was determined through the combined analysis of polarized light microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. FsTA was performed on amorphous films and show complex charge recombination dynamics, and a Stark effect, characterized from the combined TPA+˙ and [BT-CN]-˙ spectroscopic signatures at 450 nm and 510 nm and identified through spectroelectrochemistry. Radical cation dynamics of TPA+˙ was observed selectively at 750 nm with >503.3 ps (18%) recombination kinetics resulting in a rather significant yield of free charge carriers in amorphous films and consistent with previous reports on energetically disordered blend films. However, photoexcitation on large, non-banded spherulites areas (>250 μm) reveal average monoexponential charge recombination lifetimes of 169.2 ps from delocalized states similar to those observed in amorphous films and are 5× longer-lived than previous reports [Chang et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2013, 135, 8790] of a related methyl-DPAT-BT-CN whose amorphous thin films were prepared through vapor deposition. Thus, the correlation between the microstructure of the blend film and the photoinduced radical pair dynamics described here is critical for developing a fundamental understanding of how dipolar states contribute to the charge carrier yield in a disordered energy system.
