Red-emitting polyaniline-based nanoparticle probe for pH-sensitive fluorescence imaging

Fluorescent probes based on semiconducting polymer nanoparticles (NPs) such as polyaniline (PANI) usually require external fluorophore doping to provide fluorescence function. Direct use of PANI-based NPs for bioimaging applications has been limited by PANI's weak blue fluorescence and aggregation-induced quenching in physiological medium. In this report, we developed a facile solid-state synthesis method to produce fluorescent polyaniline nanoparticles (FPNs) that are not only water-soluble but also exhibit high intensity and pH-sensitive red fluorescence. The FPNs showed high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 19.3 % at physiological pH, which makes FPNs ideal for application as fluorescent nanoprobes in bioimaging. Moreover, we performed an in-depth study of photoluminescence dependence on pH and the phenomena of exciton-polaron quenching at low pH was highlighted. We also found that the ratio of emission intensity at 600 nm and 650 nm increased from 0.04 to 1.65 as pH was raised from 2.6 to 11.8, which could find its application in ratiometric pH sensing. FPNs exhibited excellent biocompatibility with >85 % cell viability for fibroblasts NIH/3 T3 and prostate cancer 22RV1 cells even at concentrations as high as 1000 μg/mL. In addition, fluorescence microscopy demonstrated concentration-dependent red fluorescence in the cytoplasm owing to the cellular uptake of FPNs in prostate cancer cells.

Development of Biopolymer and Conducting Polymer-Based Optical Sensors for Heavy Metal Ion Detection

Great efforts have been devoted to the invention of environmental sensors as the amount of water pollution has increased in recent decades. Chitosan, cellulose and nanocrystalline cellulose are examples of biopolymers that have been intensively studied due to their potential applications, particularly as sensors. Furthermore, the rapid use of conducting polymer materials as a sensing layer in environmental monitoring has also been developed. Thus, the incorporation of biopolymer and conducting polymer materials with various methods has shown promising potential with sensitively and selectively toward heavy metal ions. In this feature paper, selected recent and updated investigations are reviewed on biopolymer and conducting polymer-based materials in sensors aimed at the detection of heavy metal ions by optical methods. This review intends to provide sufficient evidence of the potential of polymer-based materials as sensing layers, and future outlooks are considered in developing surface plasmon resonance as an excellent and valid sensor for heavy metal ion detection.

Development of the PANI/MWCNT Nanocomposite-Based Fluorescent Sensor for Selective Detection of Aqueous Ammonia

The present work reported the polyaniline (PANI) and multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-based nanocomposite as a sensing material for the determination of aqueous ammonia by the enhanced fluorescence method. The excitation wavelength-dependent photoluminescence (PL) intensity has shown dual emission peaks at 340 and 380 nm that correspond to two different excitation energy states. The pH-based PL intensity and zeta potential variation were analyzed to optimize the suitable medium for aqueous ammonia sensing. Zeta potential was found to shift from 4 to -21 mV upon changing the pH of the the solution from acidic to alkaline medium. The fluorescence intensity of PANI/MWCNTs was found to increase upon increasing the pH from 3.0 to 6.0 (acidic region) and exhibits a plateau upon further increasing the pH from 7.0 to 12 (basic region). The PANI/MWCNT composite has shown a linear response to aqueous ammonia concentration varying from 25 to 200 μM with a correlation coefficient (R ²) of 0.99 and a limit of detection of 15.19 μM. The presence of relevant interference molecules and physiological ions had no influence on the detection of aqueous ammonia. Field-level study demonstrated that the level of aqueous ammonia can be determined selectively by using the PANI/MWCNT composite for various applications. The mechanism for the selective detection of aqueous ammonia is deliberated in detail.

Highly Luminescent Ternary Nanocomposite of Polyaniline, Silver Nanoparticles and Graphene Oxide Quantum Dots

Quantum dots (QDs) with photostability show a potential application in optical sensing and biological imaging. In this work, ternary nanocomposite (NC) of high fluorescent polyaniline (PANI)/2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPSA) capped silver nanoparticles (NPs)/graphene oxide quantum dots (PANI/Ag (AMPSA)/GO QDs) have been synthesized by in situ chemical oxidative polymerization of aniline in the presence of Ag (AMPSA) NPs and GO QDs. Ag (AMPSA) NPs and GO QDs were prepared by AgNO3 chemical reduction and glucose carbonization methods, respectively. The prepared materials were characterized using UV-visible, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), photoluminescence and Raman spectroscopies, X-Ray diffractometer (XRD) and high- resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). HRTEM micrographs confirmed the preparation of GO QDs with an average size of 15 nm and Ag (AMPSA) NPs with an average size of 20 nm. PANI/Ag (AMPSA)/GO QDs NC showed high and stable emission peak at 348 nm. This PANI/Ag (AMPSA)/GO QDs NC can emerge as a new class of fluorescence materials that could be suitable for practical sensing applications.

Formation and behavior of negative ions in low pressure aniline-containing RF plasmas

This paper is focused on the formation mechanisms and the general behavior of negative ions in low pressure radio-frequency (RF) plasmas operated in a mixture of argon and aniline vapor. This type of plasma is mostly used for the synthesis of polyaniline, one of the most studied conductive polymers. Experiments based on mass spectroscopy measurements reveal the necessity to have a thin layer of plasma synthesized polyaniline on the electrodes to produce negative ions through complex surface reactions. In addition, thin-films deposited using this type of discharge are analyzed by means of Near Edge X-ray Absorption Fine Structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS). The material analysis gives a first indication about the possible contribution of negative ions to polyaniline deposition.

Electrochemical DNA Sensors with Layered Polyaniline-DNA Coating for Detection of Specific DNA Interactions

A DNA sensor has been proposed on the platform of glassy carbon electrode modified with native DNA implemented between two electropolymerized layers of polyaniline. The surface layer was assembled by consecutive stages of potentiodynamic electrolysis, DNA drop casting, and second electrolysis, which was required for capsulation of the DNA molecules and prevented their leaching into the solution. Surface layer assembling was controlled by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, atomic force, and scanning electron microscopy. For doxorubicin measurement, the DNA sensor was first incubated in the Methylene blue solution that amplified signal due to DNA intercalation and competition with the doxorubicin molecules for the DNA binding sites. The charge transfer resistance of the inner layer interface decreased with the doxorubicin concentration in the range from 1.0 pM to 0.1 μM (LOD 0.6 pM). The DNA sensor was tested for the analysis of spiked artificial urine samples and showed satisfactory recovery in concentration range of 0.05⁻10 μM. The DNA sensor developed can find application in testing of antitumor drugs and some other DNA damaging factors.
