Abstract
A series of LnIII complexes of general formula [Ln(H2L1)2(NO3)2(H2O)](NO3) (1-5) [Ln = Dy (1), Tb (2) Ho (3), Er (4), and Yb (5)] and an analogous DyIII complex with ligand H2L2, [Dy(H2L2)2(NO3)3(H2O)](NO3) (6), where H2L1 and H2L2 stand for (E)-2-[(2-hydroxyphenyl)iminomethyl]-6-methoxy-4-methylphenol and (E)-2-[(2-hydroxy-5-methylphenyl)iminomethyl]-6-methoxy-4-methylphenol, respectively, have been synthesized and magneto-structurally characterized. All these complexes are isostructural and isomorphous, in which the zwitterionic form of the ligands predominantly coordinate the metal centers. The magnetic study revealed that complex 3 displays negligible SMM behaviour, while 1 and 6 are zero field SMMs, the performance of which can largely be improved in the presence of an applied dc field by lowering under barrier relaxation processes, and finally 2, 4, and 5 are field-induced SMMs. The most remarkable observation in the present study is the dramatically-enhanced SMM performance in 6 compared to 1, achieved by only a remote methyl substitution at the ligand framework to increase the intermolecular separation. Although SINGLE_ANISO ab initio calculations for 1 and 6 are very similar, the POLY_ANISO module revealed weak dipolar interactions in both the compounds but significant antiferromagnetic interaction in 1, thereby justifying the experimental fact. The present work discloses that even a small substitution such as a methyl group can adequately increase the intermolecular separation, leading to several-fold enhanced effective energy barrier.

Abstract
A novel Cu(II) complex based on the Schiff base obtained by the condensation of ortho-vanillin with gamma-aminobutyric acid was synthesized. The compounds are physico-chemically characterized by elemental analysis, HR-ESI-MS, FT-IR, and UV-Vis. The complex and the Schiff base ligand are further structurally identified by single crystal X-ray diffraction and 1H and 13C-NMR, respectively. The results suggest that the Schiff base are synthesized in excellent yield under mild reaction conditions in the presence of glacial acetic acid and the crystal structure of its Cu(II) complex reflects an one-dimensional polymeric compound. The molecular structure of the complex consists of a Cu(II) ion bound to two singly deprotonated Schiff base bridging ligands that form a CuN2O4 chelation environment, and a coordination sphere with a disordered octahedral geometry.

Abstract
Eight new azomethine compounds (3a-3h) containing thiophene and aminophenol functionality were synthesized in excellent yields by using conventional heating and microwave assisted synthesis methods. The structures of newly synthesized compounds were characterized by spectroscopic techniques such as UV-Vis, FTIR, 1H and 13C NMR and elemental analysis. UV-Vis and 1H NMR results show that all compounds prefer the phenol-imine tautomer form in solvent media. The chemical structure of 3a, 3b and 3g was also confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction method. The molecular conformations of 3a, 3b and 3g are stabilized by an N+-H⋯O- type intramolecular hydrogen bond in zwitterionic form in the crystalline solid state. The optimized molecular structures, 1H and 13C NMR chemical shift values, UV-Vis spectroscopic parameters, HOMO-LUMO energies, Mulliken (MPA) and natural (NBO) atomic charges, Natural bond orbitals (NBO), molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) maps and solvent accessible surfaces (SASs) for 3a-3h were calculated by using DFT/B3LYP/6-311G(2d,p) approach. The theoretical spectroscopic features obtained by DFT calculations show a very good agreement with the experimental data. In addition, the synthesized compounds (3a-3h) were screened for their antibacterial activities against Bacillus cereus (NRRL-B3711), Bacillus subtilis (NRRL-B4378), Escherichia coli (NRRL B-3008), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC-6538) and Salmonella typhimurium (ATCC-13311). The results show that investigated compounds have either moderately active, slightly active or inactive among the tested microorganisms. 3a exhibited the stronger antibacterial activity against all test bacteria than other compounds. It also has been observed that compounds with relatively low HOMO-LUMO energy gaps exhibit better antibacterial effects.

Abstract
The strange tautomeric equilibrium behavior exhibited by a new o-hydroxyphenyl diazepine derivative when the compound is analyzed both in solution and solid state opens the structural study of the enol-imino-keto-enamine forms and the influence of the intermolecular interactions in their equilibrium. The expected enol-imino form, in which the enol is part of a phenyl system and a strong O-H···N intramolecular hydrogen bond is established, results the most stable tautomer in gas phase (theoretical calculations) and was detected by NMR spectroscopy when the compound was dissolved in aprotic solvents. Nevertheless, the keto-enamine form ,in which the keto group integrates a cyclohexadienone moiety and the aromaticity of the phenol is lost, was the only tautomer in the crystal lattice according to single-crystal X-ray diffraction, vibrational spectroscopy, and diffuse reflectance results. The last form was also found as the main tautomer in UV-vis and NMR spectroscopy when a protic solvent was employed.
