Aromaticity of Heterocirculenes

This review summarizes the results on the aromaticity of a series of synthesized and hypothetical neutral heterocirculene molecules and their double charged ions. The aromaticity of heterocirculenes is a direct reflection of their electronic structure responsible for the specific optoelectronic and photophysical properties. We show how the presence of a heteroatom in the outer macrocycle affects the aromaticity of hetero[8]circulenes. In addition, we also describe the change in aromaticity and strain energy for a series of the “lower” (n < 8) and “higher” (n > 8) hetero[n]circulenes. It was demonstrated that the loss of planarity with increased strain leads to an increased antiaromaticity of the lower hetero[n]circulenes, whereas higher hetero[n]circulenes demonstrate a more pronounced aromatic nature because of the small departure from planarity of each heteroarene ring in hetero[n]circulene molecule. Finally, we discuss the aromatic nature of the first examples of π-extended hetero[8]circulenes.

Metalcarbonyl analogues of annelated cyclooctatetraene and cyclodecapentaene derivatives with a planar core cycle: a quantum chemical study

With the help of DFT calculations the possibility of stabilizing non-standard flat conformations of cyclooctatetraene and cyclodecapentaene by equatorially located metalcarbonyl substituents has been predicted. Structures and stabilities of a new family of metalcarbonyl Cr(CO)5, Fe(CO)4, Ni(CO)3, Ti(CO)4, and Ni(CO)2 cyclooctatetraene and cyclodecapentaene derivatives have been studied. All cyclooctatetraene derivatives, except the Ti(CO)4 derivative, have planar structures and are characterized by the pronounced anti-aromaticity of the core cycle. In the case of cyclodecapentaene complexes, the planar structures are formed by only Fe(CO)4 and Ni(CO)3 derivatives. Stabilization of non-standard planar forms is caused by both sterically enforced flattening of the core cycles and their π-interactions with metalcarbonyl moieties.

Behaviour of the XH-*-π and YX-*-π interactions (X, Y = F, Cl, Br and I) in the coronene π-system, as elucidated by QTAIM dual functional analysis with QC calculations

The dynamic and static nature of XH-*-π and YX-*-π in the coronene π-system (π(C24H12)) is elucidated by QTAIM dual functional analysis, where * emphasizes the presence of bond critical points (BCPs) in the interactions. The nature of the interactions is elucidated by analysing the plots of the total electron energy densities H b(r c) versus H b(r c) - V b(r c)/2 [=(ħ 2/8m)∇2 ρ b(r c)] for the interactions at BCPs, where V b(r c) are the potential energy densities at the BCPs. The data for the perturbed structures around the fully optimized structures are employed for the plots in addition to those of the fully optimized structures. The plots are analysed using the polar coordinate of (R, θ) for the data of the fully optimized structures, while those containing the perturbed structures are analysed using (θ p, κ p), where θ p corresponds to the tangent line of each plot and κ p is the curvature. Whereas (R, θ) show the static nature, (θ p, κ p) represent the dynamic nature of the interactions. All interactions in X-H-*-π(C24H12) (X = F, Cl, Br and I) and Y-X-*-π(C24H12) (Y-X = F-F, Cl-Cl, Br-Br, I-I, F-Cl, F-Br and F-I) are classified by pure CS (closed shell) interactions and are characterized as having the vdW nature, except for X-H = F-H and Y-X = F-Cl, F-Br and F-I, which show the typical-HB nature without covalency. The structural features of the complexes are also discussed.

DFT, QTAIM, and NBO studies on the trimeric interactions in the protrusion domain of a piscine betanodavirus

Crystal structure of the protrusion domain (P-domain) of the grouper nervous necrosis virus (GNNV) shows the presence of three-fold trimeric protrusions with two asymmetrical calcium cations along the non-crystallographic three-fold axis. The trimeric interaction natures of the interacting residues and the calcium cations with the neighboring residues within the trimeric interface have been studied by the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) and natural bond orbital (NBO) analyses in the framework of the density-functional theory (DFT) approach. The results revealed that residues Leu259, Val274, Trp280, and Gln322 of subunit A, Arg261, Asp275, Ala277, and Gln322 of subunit B, Leu259, Asp260, Arg261, Ala277, Val278, and Leu324 of subunit C are the main residues involved in the trimeric interactions. Charge-dipole, dipole-dipole, and hydrogen bonding interactions make the significant contributions to these trimeric interactions. Among different interacting residues within trimeric interface, residue pair Arg261 B-Leu259C forms the strongest hydrogen bond inside the interface between subunits B and C. It was also found that calcium cations interact with residues Asp273, Val274, and Asp275 of subunits A, B, and C through charge-charge and charge transfer interactions.

Behavior of interactions between hydrogen chalcogenides and an anthracene π-system elucidated by QTAIM dual functional analysis with QC calculations

The nature of the interactions between chalcogenides and the anthracene p-system, EH₂-*-p(C₁₄H₁₀), is predicted to be close to that of EH₂-*-p(C₁₀H₈), although the partial structures around the central rings can be found in EH₂-*-p(C₆H₆).
