Abstract
Herein, an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) active Schiff base (NHS) was synthesized by condensing naphthalimide hydrazide with salicylaldehyde. The non-fluorescent solution of NHS in DMSO turned to emissive NHS upon increasing the HEPES fraction in DMSO from 70 to 95%. The UV-Vis absorption and DLS studies supported the self-aggregation of NHS that restricted the intramolecular rotation and activated the ESIPT process. The blue fluorescence of AIE luminogen NHS in DMSO:HEPES (5:95, v/v, pH = 7.4) was examined by adding different metal ions (Al3+, Ca2+, Cd2+, Co2+, Cu2+, Cr2+, Fe2+, Fe3+, Hg2+, Mg2+, Mn2+, Ni2+, Pb2+ and Zn2+). NHS showed a selective fluorescence switch-off response for Cu2+ due to the chelation enhancement quenching effect (CHEQ). The quenching of NHS by Cu2+ was explored by using density functional theory (DFT) and Stern-Volmer plot. The practical utility of NHS was examined by quantitative and qualitative analysis of Cu2+ in real water samples.

Abstract
A solvent-directed, new Schiff base multiple correspondence fluorescent probe, (E)-2-(2-hydroxybenzylidene) hydrazine-1-carboxamid (L), was synthesized for selective sensing of Cu2+ and Mg2+ ions. L showed excellent selectivity and high sensitivity toward Cu2+ in "turn off" mode with a detection limit of 40.5 nM in 10 mM, pH = 7.0 PBS buffer. Contrary to that, when acetonitrile was used as the solvent, L exhibited highly selective and sensitive fluorescence sensing ability for Mg2+ in "turn on" mode with a detection limit of 9.5 nM. L can coordinate to Cu2+ and Mg2+ in a 1:1 molar ratio, respectively, evidenced by Job's plot analysis. Their binding modes were investigated by NMR, IR and XPS spectroscopies. Moreover, the satisfied results were obtained when L was used to detect Cu2+ and Mg2+ in real water samples.

Abstract
In this study, a novel easy-to-prepare diethylaminophenol appended pyrimidine bis hydrazone (HD) has been designed and developed. The probe exhibits excellent sequential sensing characteristics towards Al3+ and PPi ions. The emission studies, various spectroscopic techniques and lifetime results have been utilized to understand the binding mechanism of HD with Al3+ ions and, to discover the specificity as well as the efficacy of the probe in sensing Al3+ ions. The good association constant in addition to the lower detection limit values makes the probe effective for the detection of Al3+. The in-situ produced HD-Al3+ ensemble could consecutively detect PPi via a turn-off fluorescence response and the selectivity and sensitivity characteristics of the generated ensemble towards PPi were described based on the demetallation approach. The overall sensing property of HD was perfectly employed for constructing logic gates, real water, and tablet applications. Paper strips, as well as cotton-swab experiments, were also conducted inorder to check the practical utility of the synthesized probe.

Abstract
Bifunctional luminescence metal-organic frameworks with unique nanostructures have drawn ongoing attention for simultaneous determination and elimination of metal ions in the aqueous environment, but still remain a great challenge. In this work, three-dimensional hierarchical titanium metal-organic framework (Ti-MOF) microflowers were developed by a secondary hydrothermal method for not only highly sensitive and selective detection of Al(III), but also simultaneously efficient decontamination. The resulting Ti-MOF microflowers with a diameter of 5-6 μm consisted of nanorods with a diameter of ∼200 nm and a length of 1-2 μm, which provide abundant, surface active sites for determination and elimination of Al(III) ions. Because of their substantial specific surface area and superior fluorescence characteristics, Ti-MOF microflowers are used as fluorescence probes for quantitative determination of Al(III) in the aqueous environment. Importantly, the specific FL enhancement by Al(III) via a chelation-enhanced fluorescence mechanism can be utilized for selective and quantitative determination of Al(III). The Al(III) detection has a linear range of 0.4-15 µM and a detection limit as low as 75 nM. By introducing ascorbic acid, interference of Fe(III) can be avoided to achieve selective detection of Al(III) under various co-existing cations. It is noteworthy that the Ti-MOF microflowers exhibit excellent adsorption capacity for Al(III) with a high adsorption capacity of 25.85 mg g-1. The rapid adsorption rate is consistent with a pseudo-second order kinetic model. Ti-MOF is a promising contender as an adsorbent and a fluorescent chemical sensor for simultaneous determination and elimination of Al(III) due to its exceptional water stability, high porosity, and intense luminescence.

Abstract
Detection of biological phosphate is very important for environmental and health care applications. In this study, a new ratiometric fluorescent probe (E)-N'-(3-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-2-hydroxybenzylidene) picolinohydrazide (BTP) is developed and exhibits a prominent excited-state intramolecular proton-transfer (ESIPT) mechanism. The probe BTP undergoes a unique phosphate induced hydrolytic reaction in mixed aqueous solution which produces a colorimetric change associated with a huge red-shift of ∼130 nm in the UV-visible absorption spectrum. Initially, BTP exhibits a strong fluorescence emission as the ESIPT process is 'on' and the tautomeric hydrogen remains flexible and is free to give two tautomeric forms. Eventually, after the addition of PO43-, the two tautomeric forms break and thereby shift the equilibrium towards the 'enol' form. The phosphate ion binds with BTP which is associated with a ratiometric change and accounts for an enhancement in the fluorescence intensity with a large blue shift and the limit of detection value of 8.33 × 10-8 M in a mixed aqueous medium. The binding constant (1.92 × 105 M-1) proportionally reflects the stability of the complexation between the binding sites of BTP with the guest PO43- anion. The probable mechanism is supported by the NMR spectroscopy studies. The sensing phenomenon is found to be reversible towards Zn2+ and thus the sensor beautifully mimics the INHIBIT logic gate. Observations have been made in fluorescence imaging studies with human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) which indicates that BTP can be employed to successfully monitor the phosphate ion in human PBMCs.

Abstract
Mitochondria, as vital energy supplying organelles, play important roles in cellular metabolism, which are closely related with mitochondrial pH (∼8.0). In this work, a novel multimodal fluorescent probe was employed for ratiometric and colorimetric detection of pH. The probe is designed to work by controlling benzothiazole phenol-hemicyanine system as the interaction site and hemicyanine connected by conjugate bonds as the mitochondrial targeting, which also could make the fluorescence of probe red-shifted. This system results in a perfect ratiometric fluorescent response, whose emission changed from red to blue under pH 2.0-10.0, having a broad linear range (pH = 3.0-10.0). And the marked colour change (light yellow to deep purple via naked eye under pH 2.0-11.0) could be used to construct the test strip colorimetry and smartphone APP detection method, realizing the fast, portable, and accurate detection of pH in vitro and environment. Besides, the probe owns the characteristics of easy loading, high selectivity and staining ability of mitochondria, and low cytotoxicity, thereby allowing imaging of pH values and real-time monitor the subcellular mitochondria pH changes caused by drugs in living cells. It thus could be used to monitor the organ-specific dynamics related to transitions between pathological and physiological states.

Abstract
The thiazole based Schiff base 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde-2-amino thiazole (receptor1) was synthesized through a single step process and characterized by spectroscopic and analytical techniques. The cation detecting ability of the receptor1 was explored by fluorescent spectroscopic methods. The receptor1 has recognized Al3+ ions by a turn-on process over a panel of other potentially competing metal ions. The binding constant of receptor1 with Al3+ was found to be 8.27 × 103 M-1. Computational studies Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Time-dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) were performed to provide detailed information on electronic states and photophysical property of receptor1 and receptor1-Al3+ ions. MTT (3-(4,5-dimethyl thiazole-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) assay and bioimaging applications were made on breast carcinoma cells in humans.

Abstract
The newly prepared fluorescent carboxyamidoquinolines (1-3) and their Zn(II) complexes (Zn@1-Zn@3) were used to bind and sense various phosphate anions utilizing a relay mechanism, in which the Zn(II) ion migrates from the Zn@1-Zn@3 complexes to the phosphate, namely adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) and pyrophosphate (PPi), a process accompanied by a dramatic change in fluorescence. Zn@1-Zn@3 assemblies interact with adenine nucleotide phosphates while displaying an analyte-specific response. This process was investigated using UV-vis, fluorescence, and NMR spectroscopy. It is shown that the different binding selectivity and the corresponding fluorescence response enable differentiation of adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP), adenosine 5'-diphosphate (ADP), pyrophosphate (PPi), and phosphate (Pi). The cross-reactive nature of the carboxyamidoquinolines-Zn(II) sensors in conjunction with linear discriminant analysis (LDA) was utilized in a simple fluorescence chemosensor array that allows for the identification of ATP, ADP, PPi, and Pi from 8 other anions including adenosine 5'-monophosphate (AMP) with 100 % correct classification. Furthermore, the support vector machine algorithm, a machine learning method, allowed for highly accurate quantitation of ATP in the range of 5-100 μM concentration in unknown samples with error <2.5 %.

Abstract
A new chemosensor (NANH) based on naphthyl moiety was synthesized with good selectivity and sensitivity towards Al3+ ions via the inhibition by operating through dual mechanisms like photo-induced electron transfer (PET) and excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT). The synthesized NANH was validated by various techniques such as 1H, 13C NMR and mass spectrum. While prominent fluorescent enhancement was observed from the NANH upon binding with Al3+ ions, however, other metal ions have not responded in the emission spectrum. Detection limit and association constant of NANH for Al3+ were calculated as 1.2 × 10-7 M and 4.09 × 104 M-1 by using fluorescence titration method. Binding ratio (1:1) of NANH with Al3+ ions were proved by Job's plot and DFT studies. Furthermore, aluminium in variety of water samples was determined, and NANH could be used for biosensing of Al3+ in living cells.

Abstract
A pH colorimetric sensor array was prepared and characterized by combining tetrabromophenol blue (TBB) and bromothymol blue (BB) embedded in organically modified silicate (OrMoSil) spots polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-supported. The signal was based on the Hue profile (H). The individual calibrations of TBB and BB showed precisions with minimum values of 0.012 pH units at pH = 2.196 for TBB and 0.018 at pH = 6.692 for BB. The overall precision of 10 spots of the mixture TBB/BB increased in the pH range of 1.000-8.000 from a minimum value of pH precision of 0.009 at pH = 2.196 to 0.012 at pH = 6.692, with the worst value of 0.279 pH units at pH = 4.101. The possibility to produce an array with much more than 10 spots allows for improving precision. The H analytical performance was compared to those of other color spaces such as RGB, Lab, and XYZ. H was the best one, with prediction error in the range of 0.016 to 0.021 pH units, at least three times lower than the second-best (x coordinate), with 0.064 pH units. These results were also confirmed by the calculation of the main experimental contributions to the pH prediction error, demonstrating the consistency of the proposed calculation approach.

Abstract
An easily prepared benzothiazole-based probe (BHM) was prepared and characterized by general spectra, including 1H NMR, 13C NMR, HRMS, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Based on the synergistic mechanism of the inhabitation of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), the BHM displayed high selectivity and sensitivity for Al3+ in DMF/H2O (v/v, 1/1) through an obvious blue-shift in the fluorescent spectrum and significant color change detected by the naked eye, respectively. The binding ratio of BHM with Al3+ was 1:1, as determined by the Job plot, and the binding details were investigated using FT-IR, 1H NMR titration, and ESI-MS analysis. Furthermore, the BHM was successfully applied in the detection of Al3+ in the Songhua River and on a test stripe. Fluorescence imaging experiments confirmed that the BHM could be used to monitor Al3+ in human stromal cells (HSC).

Abstract
The aim of this paper is to design near-infrared (NIR) Al3+ fluorescent probes based on a Schiff base to extend their applications in biological systems. By combining benzo[h]quinoline unit and salicylaldehyde acylhydrazone, we designed two new Schiff base derivatives. According to theoretical simulations on previous experimental Al3+ probes, we obtained the appropriate theoretical approaches to describe the properties of these fluorescent probes. By employing such approaches on our newly designed molecules, it is found that the new molecules have high selectivity toward Al3+ and that their corresponding Al3+ complexes can emit NIR fluorescence. As a result, they are expected to be potential NIR Al3+ fluorescent probes.

Abstract
Pyrene-phenylglycinol tangled ratiometric sensor (R)-1 was developed for the detection of Al3+ ion over other metal ions. Ratiometric behaviour of (R)-1 for Al3+ ion explained through monomer emission and excimer quenching leads to avoiding the π-π interactions of bis-pyrene rings. Pull-push to push-pull binding mechanism is successfully explained by DFT and sensing of Al3+-ions demonstrated in living cells. The LOD of (R)-1 for Al3+ downs to nanomolar concentrations which is lower than the allowed concentration of drinking water set by the (World Health Organization) WHO.

Abstract
Rationally designed multiple hydroxyl-group-based chemosensors L1-L4 containing arene-based fluorophores are presented for the selective detection of Al3+ and Ga3+ ions. Changes in the absorption and emission spectra of L1-L4 in ethanol were easily observable upon the addition of Al3+ and Ga3+ ions. Competitive binding studies, detection limits, and binding constants illustrate significant sensing abilities of these chemosensors with L4, showing the best results. The interaction of Al3+/Ga3+ ions with chemosensor L4 was investigated by fluorescence lifetime measurements, whereas Job's plot, high-resolution mass spectrometry, and 1H NMR spectral titrations substantiated the stoichiometry between L4 and Al3+/Ga3+ ions. The solution-generated [L-M3+] species further detected pyrophosphate ion (PPi) by exhibiting emission enhancement and a visible color change. The binding of Al3+/Ga3+ ions with chemosensor L4 was further supported by density functional theory studies. Reversibility for the detection of Al3+/Ga3+ ions was achieved by utilizing a suitable proton source. The multiionic response, reversibility, and optical visualization of the present chemosensors make them ideal for practical applications for real samples, which have been illustrated by paper-strip as well as polystyrene film-based detection.

Abstract
An efficient and novel 2,5-bis(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)phenol scaffold-based ratiometric fluorescent probe BTP-Cys for the sensing of cysteine has been developed. The probe BTP-Cys with acrylates moiety, as recognition site, has been successfully constructed on account of the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) mechanism. Upon the treatment with Cys (0-250 μM), this probe BTP-Cys exhibits a dramatic fluorescent intensity ratios enhancement (from 0.03 to 18.3) and a large emission shift (113 nm). The detection limit of this probe is as low as 3.8 × 10-7 M. Importantly, the concentration and time dependent of Cys in bovine serum albumin (BSA) has also been measured, indicating that BTP-Cys could be a biocompatible and rapid probe for Cys in vitro.

Abstract
Tunable luminescence (quenching or blue shift) of HNA/OS-LRH composites (HNA is 3-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid; OS is the anionic surfactant of 1-octanesulfonic acid sodium; LRHs are layered rare-earth hydroxides, R = Tb3+, Y3+) in the solid state and delaminated state is reported, which is utilized as an effective fluorescent probe for detecting metal ions. HNA/OS species are intercalated into LRH layers to generate composites of HNA xOS1- x-LTbH ( x = 0.10, 0.15, 0.20 , 0.25) and HNA yOS1- y-LYH ( y = 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25, 0.30). In the solid state, LYH composites exhibit green emissions (from 493 to 504 nm) with a large blue shift in comparison to the 542 nm emission of free HNA- anions, while in the delaminated state in formamide (FM), the composites display blue emission (480 nm) relative to the green emission (512 nm) of an HNA soltuion in FM. However, LTbH composites display coquenched luminescence in both the solid state and delaminated state. Also, HNA0.25OS0.75-1:1-LYH, HNA0.25OS0.75-1:2-LYH, and HNA0.05OS0.95-1:1-LYH (1:1 and 1:2 are HNA:NaOH molar ratios) show significantly elongated fluorescence lifetimes of 15.35, 14.37, and 12.72 ns, respectively, in comparison with free HNA-Na (6.44 ns), and their quantum yields of 23.40%, 21.97%, and 22.31%, respectively, are much larger than that of free HNA-Na (4.86%). The LTbH composite (HNA0.25OS0.75-1:1-LTbH) has also a relatively higher quantum yield of 12.46%. The HNA0.25OS0.75-1:1-LYH colloid exhibits excellent recognition selectivity for Al3+ over other metal ions (Mg2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Pb2+, Cd2+, and Hg2+) with distinct fluorescence sensitization. It shows an intense change in its fluorescence emission when it is bound to Al3+ ions, giving a lower detection limit of 6.32 × 10-6 M. This is novel research on the fluorescence chemosensing of LRH composites.

Abstract
The concept of high-performance excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT)-based fluorescent metal-organic framework (MOF) probes for Al3+ is proposed in this work. By regulating the hydroxyl groups on the organic linker step by step, new fluorescent magnesium-organic framework (Mg-MOF) probes for Al3+ ions were established based on the ESIPT fluorescence mechanism. It is observed for the first time that the number of intramolecular hydrogen bonds between adjacent hydroxyl and carboxyl groups can effectively adjust the ESIPT process and lead to tunable fluorescence sensing performance. Together with the well-designed porous and anionic framework, the Mg-TPP-DHBDC probe decorating with a pair of intramolecular hydrogen bonds exhibits extra-high quantitative fluorescence response to Al3+ through an unusual turn-off (0-1.2 μM) and turn-on (4.2-15 μM) luminescence sensing mechanism. Notably, the 28 nM limit of detection value represents the lowest record among all reported MOF-based Al3+ fluorescent sensors up to now. Benefited from the unique turn-off-on ESIPT fluorescence detection process, the Mg-TPP-DHBDC MOF sensor exhibits single Al3+ detection compared with other 16 common metal ions including Ga3+, In3+, Fe3+, Cr3+, Ca2+, and Mg2+. Impressively, such an Al3+ selective sensing process can even be fulfilled by the reusable MOF test paper detected by naked eyes. Overall, the quantitative Al3+ detection, together with the extraordinary sensitivity, selectivity, fast response, and good reusability, strongly supports our concept of ESIPT-based fluorescent MOF Al3+ probes and makes Mg-TPP-DHBDC one of the most powerful Al3+ fluorescent sensors.

Abstract
The development of a fluorescence method for the selective ratiometric detection of Al3+ ions in pure aqueous solutions and live cells is still a significant challenge. In the present study, we synthesized a new type of fluorescent probe using an Al3+-triggered self-assembly based on the dipeptide receptor and an aggregation-induced emission fluorophore. The fluorescent probe (1) bearing cyanostilbene with excitation by visible light detected Al3+ ions sensitively in pure aqueous buffered solution by ratiometric red-emission at 600 nm. 1 provided a highly selective ratiometric detection of Al3+ among 16 metal ions in aqueous solution. 1 exhibited sensitive ratiometric response to Al3+ in aqueous buffered solutions at pH ranging from 5 to 7.4. The detection limit (145 nM, R2 = 0.999) for Al3+ ions in pure aqueous solution was much lower than the maximum allowable level of Al3+ in drinking water demanded by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The probe provided an efficient approach to detect low concentrations of Al3+ in ground water, tap water, and live cells by ratiometric red-emissions at 600 nm. The binding study using dynamic light scattering, NMR, IR, and TEM revealed that the complex between 1 and Al3+ self-assembled to form nanoparticles, resulting in the enhancement of the emission at 600 nm and a concomitant decrease in the emission at 535 nm.

Abstract
A simple benzothiazole fluorescent chemosensor was developed for the fast sequential detection of Cu2+ and biothiols through modulating the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process. The compound 1 exhibits highly selective and sensitive fluorescence "on-off" recognition to Cu2+ with a 1:1 binding stoichiometry by ESIPT hinder. The in situ generated 1-Cu2+ complex can serve as an "on-off" fluorescent probe for high selectivity toward biothiols via Cu2+ displacement approach, which exerts ESIPT recovery. It is worth pointing out that the 1-Cu2+ complex shows faster for cysteins (within 1min) than other biothiols such as homocysteine (25min) and glutathione (25min). Moreover, the compound 1 displays 160nm Stoke-shift for reversibly monitoring Cu2+ and biothiols. In addition, the probe is successfully used for fluorescent cellular imaging. This strategy via modulation the ESIPT state has been used for determination of Cu2+ and Cys with satisfactory results, which further demonstrates its value of practical applications.

Abstract
Stimuli-responsive hydrogels have attracted significant attention for their promising characteristics and have been used in diverse platforms developed for practical applications. When processed as films, these hydrogels show enhanced properties, including faster responses and higher loading capacities, and enhanced interfacial interactions. In this study, we prepared a functional polyacrylamide hydrogel film containing a rhodamine-based probe. The probe plays two fundamental roles: in the fabrication of the film via redox-initiated radical polymerization and in providing a fluorescence response to Al3+. The amine-containing probe initiated the polymerization reaction at room temperature; the resulting film synthesized through the one-step reaction was transparent and stretchable, elongating by more than five times under tensile tension. The fluorogenic probe in the film showed a sensitive, selective response to Al3+ with a detection limit of 1.5 μM. Furthermore, after detection, the addition of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) to the film turned off the fluorescence from the probe; this facilitated reversible fluorescence sensing when the film was repeatedly exposed to Al3+, as expected. The facile preparation method can be expanded to incorporate other multi-functional amine probes that can impart hydrogel films with autonomous, responsive systems.

Abstract
A new 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)quinazolin-4(3H)-one derived acylhydrazone (QP) was designed and synthesized as a fluorescent sensor. In Tris∙HCl buffer (10mM, pH7.4)/ethanol (1/9, v/v) solution, QP exhibits a highly selective fluorescence response to Al3+ over other metal ions with a significant blue-shifted and enhanced emission at 473nm. QP interacts with Al3+ reversibly through a 1:2 binding ratio with a detection limit of 4.79×10-8M. Potential applicability of QP for Al3+ detection in tap and lake water samples were also examined by 'proof-of-concept' experiments.

Abstract
A new, highly selective turn-on fluorescent chemosensor based on 2-(2'-tosylamidophenyl)thiazole (1) for the detection of zinc and phosphate ions in ethanol was synthesized and characterized. Sensor 1 showed a high selectivity for zinc compared to other cations and sequentially detected hydrogen pyrophosphate and hydrogen phosphate. The fluorescence mechanism can be explained by two different mechanisms: (i) the inhibition of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) and (ii) chelation-induced enhanced fluorescence by binding with Zn(2+). The sequential detection of phosphate anions was achieved by the quenching and subsequent revival of ESIPT.
