Conformation and Photodissociation Process of Benzo-15-Crown-5 and Benzo-18-Crown-6 Complexes with Ammonium Ions Investigated by Cold UV and IR Spectroscopy in the Gas Phase

We examined the conformation of benzo-15-crown-5 (B15C5) and benzo-18-crown-6 (B18C6) complexes with ammonium ions, NH4+, CH3NH3+ (MeNH3+), CH3CH2NH3+ (EtNH3+), and CH3CH2CH2NH3+ (PrNH3+), using cold UV and IR spectroscopy in the gas phase. We measured the UV photodissociation (UVPD) spectra of the ammonium complexes and compared them with those of the K+(B15C5) and K+(B18C6) complexes in order to identify the conformation on the basis of the band position. The number of possible conformations for the ammonium complexes of B15C5 is limited compared with alkali metal ions with similar ionic radii. The NH4+(B15C5), MeNH3+(B15C5), and EtNH3+(B15C5) complexes show two conformers, whereas the K+(B15C5) complex has three stable conformers. In the case of the PrNH3+(B15C5) complex, one conformer was found predominantly in the UVPD spectrum. The ammonium complexes of B15C5 prefer to adopt crown conformations with large dihedral angles on the C-O-C-C atoms around the benzene moiety. In the case of the ammonium complexes of B18C6, two or three conformers were found in the UVPD spectra. One conformation of the B18C6 complexes is similar to that of the K+(B18C6) complex, which has a planar form on the C-O-C-C atoms around the benzene moiety. The other but dominant conformations of the ammonium complexes could be attributed to those with large C-O-C-C dihedral angles. These conformational findings for the ammonium complexes suggest that the benzo-crown ethers tend to adopt nonplanar conformations around the benzene moiety to encapsulate the ammonium ions. The IR-UV double-resonance (DR) spectra of the B15C5 and B18C6 complexes were compared to those of benzo-12-crown-4 (B12C4) and dibenzo-18-crown-6 (DB18C6) complexes. The N-H···O hydrogen bond (H-bond) is weaker with increasing ring size from B12C4 to B18C6, although the calculated binding energy is smaller for B12C4 than for B18C6. This result indicates that cooperative H-bonds with three N-H groups can strengthen the intermolecular bond between the ammonium ions and B18C6. The difference in the conformational preference between the ammonium and K+ complexes is attributed to directed N-H···O H-bonds in the ammonium complexes. Proton transfer and dissociation of the crown ring were also observed for the photoexcitation of the NH4+(B15C5) and NH4+(B18C6) complexes.

Lanthanide and Actinide Ion Complexes Containing Organic Ligands Investigated by Surface-Enhanced Infrared Absorption Spectroscopy

A new technique, surface-enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA) spectroscopy, was used for the structural investigation of lanthanide (Ln) and actinide (An) complexes containing organic ligands. We synthesized thiol derivatives of organic ligands with coordination sites similar to those of 2-[N-methyl-N-hexanethiol-amino]-2-oxoethoxy-[N',N'-diethyl]-acetamide [diglycolamide (DGA)], Cyanex-272, and N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(2-pyridinylmethyl)-1,2-ethanediamine (TPEN), which have been used for separating Ln and An through solvent extraction. These ligands were attached on a gold surface deposited on an Si prism through S-Au covalent bonds; the gold surface enhanced the IR absorption intensity of the ligands. Aqueous solutions of Ln (Eu³⁺, Gd³⁺, and Tb³⁺) and An (Am³⁺) ions were loaded onto the gold surface to form ion complexes. The IR spectra of the ion complexes were obtained using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in the attenuated total reflection mode. In this study, we developed a new sample preparation method for SEIRA spectroscopy that enabled us to obtain the IR spectra of the complexes with a small amount of ion solution (5 μL). This is a significant advantage for the IR measurement of radiotoxic Am³⁺ complexes. In the IR spectra of DGA, the band attributed to C═O stretching vibrations at ∼1630 cm^-1 shifted to a lower wavenumber by ∼20 cm^-1 upon complexation with Ln and An ions. Moreover, the amount of the red shift was inversely proportional to the extraction equilibrium constant reported in previous studies on solvent extraction. The coordination ability of DGA toward Ln and An ions could be assessed using the band position of the C═O band. The Cyanex-272- and TPEN-like ligands synthesized in this report also showed noticeable SEIRA signals for Ln and An complexes. This study indicates that SEIRA spectroscopy can be used for the structural investigation of ion complexes and provides a microscopic understanding of selective extraction of Ln and An.

Ba+2 ion trapping using organic submonolayer for ultra-low background neutrinoless double beta detector

If neutrinos are their own antiparticles the otherwise-forbidden nuclear reaction known as neutrinoless double beta decay can occur. The very long lifetime expected for these exceptional events makes its detection a daunting task. In order to conduct an almost background-free experiment, the NEXT collaboration is investigating novel synthetic molecular sensors that may capture the Ba dication produced in the decay of certain Xe isotopes in a high-pressure gas experiment. The use of such molecular detectors immobilized on surfaces must be explored in the ultra-dry environment of a xenon gas chamber. Here, using a combination of highly sensitive surface science techniques in ultra-high vacuum, we demonstrate the possibility of employing the so-called Fluorescent Bicolor Indicator as the molecular component of the sensor. We unravel the ion capture process for these molecular indicators immobilized on a surface and explain the origin of the emission fluorescence shift associated to the ion trapping.

Conformation of Benzo-12-Crown-4 Complexes with Ammonium Ions Investigated by Cold Gas-Phase Spectroscopy

In this study, we examined the conformation and intermolecular interactions of benzo-12-crown-4 (B12C4) complexes with NH₄⁺, CH₃NH₃⁺ (MeNH₃⁺), CH₃CH₂NH₃⁺ (EtNH₃⁺), and CH₃CH₂CH₂NH₃⁺ (PrNH₃⁺) using cold gas-phase spectroscopy. All of the B12C4 complexes showed sharp vibronic features in the UV photodissociation spectra, and the position of the 0-0 band was close to that of the B12C4 complex with an isotropic K⁺ guest. This result suggests that the conformation of B12C4 is maintained despite oriented interactions with ammonium guests via anisotropic N-H···O interactions. Further, we measured the IR-UV double-resonance spectra of these complexes in the NH stretching region. In the IR-UV spectra of the EtNH₃⁺ and PrNH₃⁺ complexes, two distinct IR fingerprints were observed depending on the UV probe wavelength selected, indicating the existence of another (second) conformer for these complexes. Quantum chemical calculations clarified that the second conformer of the EtNH₃⁺ and PrNH₃⁺ complexes was partially stabilized by the C-H···π hydrogen bond. The conformation of B12C4 complexes with ammonium ions is strongly affected by the interaction between the alkyl chain of the ion guest and the benzene ring of the B12C4 host, although the main intermolecular interaction occurs between the NH₃⁺ group and crown cavity through the N-H···O hydrogen bonds.

Spherand complexes with Li+ and Na+ ions in the gas phase: encapsulation structure and characteristic unimolecular dissociation

We investigated the complexes of Cram's hexa(p-anisole) spherands (SPR, 1) with Li⁺ and Na⁺ ions (1·Li⁺ and 1·Na⁺) isolated in the gas phase. Despite the small conformational difference between 1·Li⁺ and 1·Na⁺ owing to the rigid framework of 1, ultraviolet photodissociation (UVPD) spectroscopy under cryogenic (∼10 K) conditions yielded clearly distinguishable absorption edges: ∼34 000 and ∼34 500 cm^-1 for 1·Li⁺ and 1·Na⁺, respectively. The spectral assignment and the preorganization characteristics of the host molecule were compared with those of dibenzo-18-crown-6-ether (DB18C6) complexes, which have more flexible frameworks. Furthermore, we revealed the characteristic unimolecular dissociation of the 1·Li⁺ complex using UVPD and collision-induced dissociation (CID); the formation of fragment ions with dibenzofuran moieties was detected. This dissociation pattern was ascribed to the efficient release of dimethyl ether molecule(s) from the 1·Li⁺ complex, which is characteristic of the cyclic skeleton formed with six methoxy groups in the SPR.

Combined spectroscopic studies on post-functionalized Au25 cluster as an ATR-FTIR sensor for cations

Recently, significant research activity has been devoted to thiolate-protected gold clusters due to their attractive optical and electronic properties. These properties as well as solubility and stability can be controlled by post-synthetic modification strategies. Herein, the ligand exchange reaction between Au25(2-PET)18 cluster (where 2-PET is 2-phenylethanethiol) and di-thiolated crown ether (t-CE) ligands bearing two chromophores was studied. The post-functionalization aimed to endow the cluster with ion binding properties. The exchange reaction was followed in situ by UV-vis, 1H NMR and HPLC. MALDI mass analysis revealed the incorporation of up to 5 t-CE ligands into the ligand shell. Once functionalized MALDI furthermore showed complexation of sodium ions to the cluster. ATR-FTIR spectroscopic studies using aqueous solutions of K+, Ba2+, Gd3+ and Eu3+ showed noticeable spectral shifts of the C-O stretching band around 1100 cm-1 upon complexation. Further spectral changes point towards a conformational change of the two chromophores that are attached to the crown ether. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the di-thiol ligand bridges two staple units on the cluster. The calculations furthermore reproduce the spectral shift of the C-O stretching vibrations upon complex formation and reveal a conformational change that involves the two chromophores attached to the crown ether. The functionalized clusters have therefore attractive ion sensing properties due to the combination of binding properties, mainly due to the crown ether, and the possibility for signal transduction via an induced conformational change involving chromophore units.

Chemical sensing with Au and Ag nanoparticles

Noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) are ideal scaffolds for the fabrication of sensing devices because of their high surface-to-volume ratio combined with their unique optical and electrical properties which are extremely sensitive to changes in the environment. Such characteristics guarantee high sensitivity in sensing processes. Metal NPs can be decorated with ad hoc molecular building blocks which can act as receptors of specific analytes. By pursuing this strategy, and by taking full advantage of the specificity of supramolecular recognition events, highly selective sensing devices can be fabricated. Besides, noble metal NPs can also be a pivotal element for the fabrication of chemical nose/tongue sensors to target complex mixtures of analytes. This review highlights the most enlightening strategies developed during the last decade, towards the fabrication of chemical sensors with either optical or electrical readout combining high sensitivity and selectivity, along with fast response and full reversibility, with special attention to approaches that enable efficient environmental and health monitoring.

Microdroplet Impact-Induced Spray Ionization Mass Spectrometry (MISI MS) for Online Reaction Monitoring and Bacteria Discrimination

Microdroplet impact-induced spray ionization (MISI) is demonstrated involving the impact of microdroplets produced from a paper and their impact on another, leading to the ionization of analytes deposited on the latter. This cascaded process is more advantageous in comparison to standard spray ionization as it performs reactions and ionization simultaneously in the absence of high voltage directly applied on the sample. In MISI, we apply direct current (DC) potential only to the terminal paper, used as the primary ion source. Charge transfer due to microdroplet/ion deposition on the flowing analyte solution on the second surface generates secondary charged microdroplets from it carrying the analytes, which ionize and get detected by a mass spectrometer. In this way, up to three cascaded spray sources could be assembled in series. We show the detection of small molecules and proteins in such ionization events. MISI provides a method to understand chemical reactions by droplet impact. The C-C bond formation reactions catalyzed by palladium and alkali metal ion encapsulation using crown ether were studied as our model reactions. To demonstrate the application of our ion source in a bioanalytical context, we studied the noninvasive in situ discrimination of bacteria samples under ambient conditions.

Tripodal Podand Ligand with a Superhalogen Nature as an Effective Molecular Trap

Tris(2-methoxyethyl) fluoroborate anion (TMEFA), anovel tripodal ligand based on the BF4− superhalogen anion, is proposed and was investigated theoretically using ab initio MP2 (second-order Møller-Plesset perturbational method) and OVGF (outer valence Green function) methods. The studied molecule comprises three 2-methoxyethoxy groups (-O-CH2-CH2-O-CH3) connected to a central boron atom, which results in the C3-symmetry of the compound. The resulting anion was stable against fragmentation processes and its vertical electron detachment energy was found to be 5.72 eV. Due to its equilibrium structure resembling that of classical tripodal podands, the [F-B(O-CH2-CH2-O-CH3)3]− anion is capable of binding metal cations using its three arms, and thus may form strongly bound ionic complexes such as [F-B(O-CH2-CH2-O-CH3)3]−/Li+ and [F-B(O-CH2-CH2-O-CH3)3]−/Mg2+. The binding energies predicted for such compounds far exceed those of the similar neutral classical podand ligands, which likely makes the [F-B(O-CH2-CH2-O-CH3)3]− system a more effective molecular trap or steric shielding agent with respect to selected metal cations.

Ultraviolet photodissociation (UVPD) spectra of dibenzo-18-crown-6 (DB18C6) complexes with NH₄⁺, CH₃NH₃⁺ (MeNH₃⁺), and CH₃CH₂NH₃⁺ (EtNH₃⁺) [NH₄⁺(DB18C6), MeNH₃⁺(DB18C6), and EtNH₃⁺(DB18C6), respectively] were observed under cold gas-phase conditions. We also measured the infrared (IR)-UV double-resonance spectra of these complexes in the NH stretching region to examine the encapsulation structure. The UVPD and IR-UV spectra were analyzed using quantum chemical calculations. All the ammonium complexes show sharp 0-0 bands at positions close to that of the K⁺(DB18C6) complex; the conformation of the DB18C6 component in the ammonium complexes is similar to that in K⁺(DB18C6). In addition, the ammonium complexes each have another type of isomer that the K⁺(DB18C6) complex does not show in the gas phase. In these isomers, the conformation of the DB18C6 cavity changes, and the strength of the NH···O hydrogen bond increases. During the UVPD, the NH₄⁺(DB18C6) complex provides various photofragment species, such as the C₈H₉O₂⁺ ion, resulting from cleavage of the DB18C6 component, whereas the dominant fragment ion for the MeNH₃⁺(DB18C6) and EtNH₃⁺(DB18C6) complexes is the ammonium ion itself. The UVPD investigation of deuterated systems suggests that after UV excitation of the NH₄⁺(DB18C6) complex, the dissociation process is initiated by proton transfer from NH₄⁺ to DB18C6, followed by the migration of hydrogen atoms in the crown cavity and the cleavage of the ether ring.

Design of artificial membrane transporters from gold nanoparticles with controllable hydrophobicity

Gold nanoparticles with variable hydrophobicity have been prepared in three different size regimes following established methods. The control of hydrophobicity was achieved by complexation of the 18-crown-6-CH₂-thiolate ligand shell with potassium ions. Potassium dependent phase transfer of these particles from dispersion in water to chloroform was demonstrated, and the equilibrium partitioning of the particles in water–chloroform liquid/liquid systems was quantified by optical spectroscopy. The gradual complexation of the ligand shell with potassium ions was further monitored by zeta potential measurements. Potassium dependent insertion of nanoparticles into the phospholipid bilayer membrane of vesicles in aqueous dispersion has been demonstrated by cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM). Nanoparticle-dependent potassium ion transport across the vesicle membrane has been established by monitoring the membrane potential with fluorescence spectroscopy using a potential sensitive dye.
