Abstract
Mono-substituted cage-like silsesquioxanes of the T8-type can play the role of potential ligands in the coordination chemistry. In this paper, we report on imine derivatives as ligands for samarium, terbium, and erbium cations and discuss their efficient synthesis, crystal structures, and magnetic and optical properties. X-ray analysis of the lanthanide coordination entities [MCl3(POSS)3]·2THF [M = Er3+ (3), Tb3+ (4), Sm3+ (5)] showed that all three compounds crystallize in the same space group with similar lattice parameters. All compounds contain an octahedrally coordinated metal atom, and additionally, 3 and 5 structures are strictly isomorphous. However, surprisingly, there are two different molecules in the crystal structure of the terbium coordination entity 4, monomer (sof 65%) and dimer (sof 35%), with one and two metal centers. Absorption measurements of the investigated materials recorded at 300 K showed that regardless of the lanthanide involved, their energy band gap equals 2.7 eV. Moreover, the analogues containing Tb3+ and Sm3+ exhibit luminescence typical of these rare earth ions in the visible and infrared spectral range, while the compound with Er3+ does not generate any emission. Direct current variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements on polycrystalline samples of 3-5 were performed between 1.8 and 300 K. The magnetic properties of 3 and 4 are dominated by the crystal field effect on the Er3+ and Tb3+ ions, respectively, hiding the magnetic influence between the magnetic cations of adjacent molecules. Complex 5 exhibits a nature typical for the paramagnetism of the samarium(III) cation.

Abstract
After entering in water, Fe3+ is enriched in the human body and along the food chain, causing chronic poisoning and irreversible harm to human health. In order to solve this problem, we synthesized citric acid POSS (CAP) from aminopropyl POSS (OAP) and citric acid. Then, we synthesized fluorescent hydrogels (CAP-agarose hydrogel, CAHG) with CAP and agarose. The luminescence mechanism of CAP was investigated by theoretical calculation. CAP plays a dual role in composite hydrogels: one is to give the gels good fluorescence properties and detect Fe3+; the second is that the surface of CAP has a large content of carbonyl and amide groups, so it can coordinate with Fe3+ to enhance the adsorption properties of hydrogels. The experimental results show that the lowest Fe3+ concentration that CAHG can detect is 5 μmol/L, and the adsorption capacity for Fe3+ is about 26.75 mg/g. In a certain range, the fluorescence intensity of CAHG had an exponential relation with Fe3+ concentration, which is expected to be applied to fluorescence sensors. Even at a lower concentration, CAHG can effectively remove Fe3+ from the solution. The prepared fluorescent hydrogel has great potential in the field of fluorescent probes, fluorescent sensors, and ion adsorption. Besides, CAHG can be used as photothermal material after adsorbing Fe3+, allowing for material recycling and reducing material waste.

Abstract
The coordination environment of Eu3+ is a crucial factor in the optical performance of the complex. Herein, a new kind of oligomeric silsesquioxane was employed to improve the coordination environment of central ions, the luminescence intensity of which was greatly enhanced with an efficient emission peak at 619 nm. More importantly, the photoluminescent properties of the product will be altered because of the formation of the Si-O-Si structure. The relevant mechanism has also been investigated and proposed by a series of characterization analyses. Additionally, the fluorescence lifetime, intrinsic quantum yield, and energy transfer efficiency were calculated. In addition, the observed trend of Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters was used to justify the coordination environment of Eu3+ ions. The experimental results reveal that the sol-gel reaction of the ligands can effectively promote intramolecular energy transfer. In addition, we introduced four theory modules of ligands (LSi, LSi-1, LSi-2, and LSi-3) with certain rules of formation of Si-O-Si, and density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) were used to explore their excited electron transfer process and their electronic absorption spectra, combined with Marcus theory. The calculated results show that the sol-gel reaction will induce the separation of the distribution of excited holes and electrons, leading to an efficient charge-transfer (CT) process. The predictable results were in good accordance with the experimental findings. Consequently, the sol-gel reaction occurring among ligands will be attributed to an efficient CT process, leading to a strong luminescence intensity, as observed experimentally.

Abstract
The synthesis of a styryl functionalised POSS incorporating an encapsulated fluoride ion within a (SiO1.5)8 cage (T8-F) is reported. It was characterised by single crystal XRD, MALDI-MS, FTIR, solution (29Si, 19F, 13C, 1H) and solid state (29Si, 19F) NMR. In the absence of 1H decoupling, the 29Si solution NMR spectrum exhibited a triplet of doublets. In contrast, 1H, 19F and 1H/19F double-decoupling resulted in two, three and one signal, respectively, being consistent with a single Si site whose 29Si NMR signal is modulated by both the proximal aromatic-ring protons and fluoride. The associated SiF coupling constant (2.5 Hz) is substantially lower than expected for a covalent Si-F bond and arises from a fluxional SiF covalent effect in which the F- interacts equivalently with all eight Si atoms. Additional variable temperature NMR studies demonstrated a threshold at -5 °C below which no SiF interactions are observed, and above which an increasing SiF covalent character occurs.

Abstract
A polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) modified 8-hydroxyquinoline derivative (denoted as Q-POSS) was synthesized and used as a ligand to coordinate with lanthanide ions to obtain a series of lanthanide complexes Ln(Q-POSS)₃ (Ln = Er3+, Yb3+, Nd3+). The as-prepared lanthanide complexes have been characterized by FT-IR, UV⁻Vis, and elemental analysis. All these complexes showed the characteristic near-infrared (NIR) luminescence originated from the corresponding lanthanide ions under excitation. Compared with the unmodified counterparts LnQ₃ (HQ = 8-hydroxyquinoline), the Ln(Q-POSS)₃ complexes showed obviously increased emission intensity, which was ascribed mainly to the steric-hindrance effects of the POSS moiety in the ligands. It is believed that the POSS group could suppress undesired excimer formation and intermolecular aggregation, thus decreasing the concentration quenching effect of the corresponding lanthanide complexes.
