Plaster board waste (PBW) - A potential fluoride leaching source in soil/water environments and, fluoride immobilization studies using soils

Plaster board waste generated from industries, usually contains major proportion of calcium as calcium sulfate. In addition, fluoride is remarkably one among the constituents of this waste material which leaches off into the soil and aquatic environments and causes fluoride pollution. In order to simulate how the dumping of PBW causes fluoride contamination in soil and water sources, shaking and stirring based batch-mode leaching studies were conducted. These studies explored the leaching of fluoride as a function of particle size, agitation time, pH of the leaching solvent (distilled water), L/S (water: PBW) ratio, temperature and electrolytes. It was explored that 1 g of plaster board waste contains18.54 mg F per gram of PBP. High leaching of 3.72 mg F per liter was studied at pH 6.02 with Ca²⁺ and TDS contents of 1050 mg L^-1 and1640 mg L^-1 respectively. The influence of sodium electrolytes such as chloride, nitrate, hydrogen carbonate, carbonate, sulfate, borate, phosphate and acetate on the leaching of fluoride from PBW was studied. The influence of fluoride leaching by sodium phosphate recorded a high value of 12.75 mg L^-1 with no detectable amount of calcium ions. The influence of eight electrolytic mixtures each containing five sodium electrolytes on fluoride leaching corroborated the highest leaching in mixtures containing phosphate followed by hydrogen carbonate/carbonate. Solutions of calcium and aluminium chloride and their mixture were used to measure the rate of leachable fluoride in solution. Furthermore, the fluoride leaching at different temperatures and acids was studied. Naturally occurring soils when blended with PBW were observed to immobilize fluoride and lessened the amount of leaching fluoride in water. Various characterization studies such as FTIR, Raman, FESEM (with EDS), XRD and XPS were carried out for PBW and its treated samples using different electrolytes. Fluoride leaching proportionate to the precipitation of carbonate and phosphate was recorded in the case of appropriate electrolyte and mixtures.

Research hotspots and trends of comprehensive utilization of phosphogypsum: Bibliometric analysis

Phosphogypsum is a by-product of the phosphate fertilizer industry. It is generally treated by stacking, which not only causes environmental pollution, but also wastes resources. Therefore, the harmless, comprehensive, and high-value utilization of phosphogypsum has attracted more and more scholars around the world. From the perspective of bibliometrics, this paper systematically and comprehensively describes the research progress, trends and hot spots of phosphogypsum resource utilization. This article is based on a scientific network database, and a total of 1067 articles from 1985 to 2020 were collected. Then, use VOSViewer software to perform co-occurrence, co-citation analysis and cluster analysis. The visual analysis results demonstrate that the research on the resource utilization of phosphogypsum shows the characteristics of rapid growth. The active countries are mainly China, Brazil, Spain and the United States. Four of the top 10 active organizations are from China. It systematically expounds the changes in research hotspots in this field at different stages and possible future research hotspots. Including the gradual attention to the preparation of phosphogypsum building materials, phosphogypsum adsorption materials, and radioactive elements in phosphogypsum; the extraction of rare earth elements from phosphogypsum; the use of phosphogypsum to prepare fertilizer or soil improvement. Research shows that phosphogypsum can be reasonably designed, transformed, and used in different fields.However, the radioactivity contained in phosphogypsum should be paid attention to because it has an impact on humans and the environment. We believe that this research provides a comprehensive and systematic overview for future research on phosphogypsum resource utilization.

The study on the effect of flotation purification on the performance of α-hemihydrate gypsum prepared from phosphogypsum

Phosphogypsum (PG) is a massive industrial solid waste. In this paper, PG was purified by flotation method, and α-hemihydrate gypsum (α-HH) was prepared by the autoclaving method. The morphology of α-HH was adjusted by adding different doses of Maleic acid and Aluminium sulfate. The results showed that after flotation purification, the impurity content in PG was significantly reduced, the soluble phosphorus content decreased from 0.48 to 0.07%, the PG purity increased from 73.12 to 94.37%, and the PG whiteness risen from 19.4 to 40.5. Then the performance of α-HH prepared from PG before and after purification was compared. Fixing the amount of aluminium sulfate at 0.2 wt%, the reaction temperature at 140 °C, and the reaction time at 120 min, the average length/diameter ratio of α-HH crystals decreased from 7.2 to 0.6 as the amount of Maleic acid increased from 0 to 0.17 wt%. When the amount of Maleic acid was 0.13 wt%, the α-hemihydrate gypsum reached the best mechanical properties. The mechanical strength of high strength gypsum prepared from PG concentrate was significantly better than that of raw PG, indicating that flotation purification can effectively improve the performance of PG. In this study, a new method of PG purification and resource utilization was proposed.

Effect of Cu2+ on the nucleation kinetics and crystallization of rod-shaped CaSO4·2H2O in aqueous solution

In this study, a simple and efficient strategy is developed to synthesize rod-like CaSO₄·2H₂O (DH) crystals with tunable aspect ratio in aqueous solution using Cu²⁺ as modifier. The aspect ratio and length of the DH crystals are effectively reduced to 5.7 : 1 and about 35 μm in the presence of Cu²⁺, respectively. The interfacial tension value (γ) in the aqueous solution is improved significantly with the assistance of Cu²⁺, yet the nucleation rate (J) of the DH crystal is decreased sharply. The interfacial tension value (γ) in the aqueous solution is improved and the nucleation rate (J) of the DH crystal is drastically decreased due to the introduction of Cu²⁺, leading to the induction time of the DH crystallization being extended from 4 min to 25 min. The diversification of morphology for the DH crystals is incited by the changes of nucleation kinetics and Cu²⁺ incorporated into the crystal lattice, affecting the crystal growth habit, and finally controlling the growth of DH crystals in aqueous solution.

The induction time of DH crystals is extended by the introduction of Cu²⁺.

Aspect ratio-controlled preparation of α-CaSO4·0.5H2O from phosphogypsum in potassium tartrate aqueous solution

In this study, a simple and efficient strategy is developed to synthesize rod-shaped α-CaSO₄·0.5H₂O crystals with tunable aspect ratio from industrial phosphogypsum only in potassium tartrate aqueous solution at a low temperature. Industrial phosphogypsum can be effectively converted into rod-shaped α-CaSO₄·0.5H₂O crystals with the assistance of potassium tartrate, and the aspect ratio of α-CaSO₄·0.5H₂O crystals gradually decreases from 52 : 1 to 1 : 1 with increasing the concentration of potassium tartrate. The formation process of the rod-shaped α-CaSO₄·0.5H₂O crystals in this system involves the dissolution of CaSO₄·2H₂O and nucleation of α-CaSO₄·0.5H₂O crystals. The tartrate ions from potassium tartrate in this system preferentially bind to (001) and (002) facets of α-CaSO₄·0.5H₂O crystals, inhibiting the growth of α-CaSO₄·0.5H₂O crystals along the c-axis and controlling its morphology and aspect ratio.

The conversion of industrial gypsum to rod-shaped α-CaSO₄·0.5H₂O crystals with tunable aspect ratio in a H₂O system is realized with potassium tartrate.

A facile method of transforming FGD gypsum to α-CaSO4·0.5H2O whiskers with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and KCl in glycerol-water solution

A facile method to transform flue gas desulfurization gypsum (FGD gypsum) to α- calcium sulfate hemihydrate (α-HH) whiskers with high aspect ratios mediated by cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and KCl in glycerol-water solutions was studied. Addition of KCl facilitated the dissolution of calcium sulfate dihydrate (DH) and created a much higher supersaturation, which could come into being a larger driving force for the phase transformation from DH to α-HH. CTAB as the crystal modifier can significantly promoted 1-D growth of α-HH whiskers along the c axis and the presence of 0.25% CTAB (by weight of FGD gypsum) resulted in the increase of the average aspect ratio of α-HH whiskers from 28.9 to 188.4, which might be attributed to the preferential adsorption of C₁₆H₃₃(CH₃)₃N⁺ on the negative side facets of α-HH crystal.
