Metal ion adsorption at the ionic liquid-mica interface

Nanostructure and Dynamics of Aprotic Ionic Liquids at Graphite Electrodes as a Function of Potential

Atomic force microscope (AFM) videos reveal the near-surface nanostructure and dynamics of the ionic liquids (ILs) 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide (BMIM DCA) and 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide (HMIM DCA) above highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) electrodes as a function of surface potential. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations reveal the molecular-level composition of the nanostructures. In combination, AFM and MD show that the near-surface aggregates form via solvophobic association of the cation alkyl chains at the electrode interface. The diffusion coefficients of interfacial nanostructures are ≈0.01 nm2 s-1 and vary with the cation alkyl chain length and the surface potential. For each IL, the nanostructure diffusion coefficients are similar at open-circuit potential (OCP) and OCP + 1V, but BMIM DCA moves about twice as fast as HMIM DCA. At negative potentials, the diffusion coefficient decreases for BMIM DCA and increases for HMIM DCA. When the surface potential is switched from negative to positive, a sudden change in the direction of the nanostructure motion is observed for both BMIM DCA and HMIM DCA. No transient dynamics are noted following other potential jumps. This study provides a new fundamental understanding regarding the dynamics of electrochemically stable ILs at electrodes vital for the rational development of IL-based electrochemical devices.

Ions Adsorbed at Amorphous Solid/Solution Interfaces Form Wigner Crystal-like Structures

When a surface is immersed in a solution, it usually acquires a charge, which attracts counterions and repels co-ions to form an electrical double layer. The ions directly adsorbed to the surface are referred to as the Stern layer. The structure of the Stern layer normal to the interface was described decades ago, but the lateral organization within the Stern layer has received scant attention. This is because instrumental limitations have prevented visualization of the ion arrangements except for atypical, model, crystalline surfaces. Here, we use high-resolution amplitude modulated atomic force microscopy (AFM) to visualize in situ the lateral structure of Stern layer ions adsorbed to polycrystalline gold, and amorphous silica and gallium nitride (GaN). For all three substrates, when the density of ions in the layer exceeds a system-dependent threshold, correlation effects induce the formation of close packed structures akin to Wigner crystals. Depending on the surface and the ions, the Wigner crystal-like structure can be hexagonally close packed, cubic, or worm-like. The influence of the electrolyte concentration, species, and valence, as well as the surface type and charge, on the Stern layer structures is described. When the system parameters are changed to reduce the Stern layer ion surface excess below the threshold value, Wigner crystal-like structures do not form and the Stern layer is unstructured. For gold surfaces, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations reveal that when sufficient potential is applied to the surface, ion clusters form with dimensions similar to the Wigner crystal-like structures in the AFM images. The lateral Stern layer structures presented, and in particular the Wigner crystal-like structures, will influence diverse applications in chemistry, energy storage, environmental science, nanotechnology, biology, and medicine.

Nanostructure of Locally Concentrated Ionic Liquids in the Bulk and at Graphite and Gold Electrodes

The physical properties of ionic liquids (ILs) have led to intense research interest, but for many applications, high viscosity is problematic. Mixing the IL with a diluent that lowers viscosity offers a solution if the favorable IL physical properties are not compromised. Here we show that mixing an IL or IL electrolyte (ILE, an IL with dissolved metal ions) with a nonsolvating fluorous diluent produces a low viscosity mixture in which the local ion arrangements, and therefore key physical properties, are retained or enhanced. The locally concentrated ionic liquids (LCILs) examined are 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (HMIM TFSI), 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate (HMIM FAP), or 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate (BMIM FAP) mixed with 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl ether (TFTFE) at 2:1, 1:1, and 1:2 (w/w) IL:TFTFE, as well as the locally concentrated ILEs (LCILEs) formed from 2:1 (w/w) HMIM TFSI-TFTFE with 0.25, 0.5, and 0.75 m lithium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI). Rheology and conductivity measurements reveal that the added TFTFE significantly reduces viscosity and increases ionic conductivity, and cyclic voltammetry (CV) reveals minimal reductions in electrochemical windows on gold and carbon electrodes. This is explained by the small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (S/WAXS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) data, which show that the local ion nanostructures are largely retained in LCILs and LCILEs in bulk and at gold and graphite electrodes for all potentials investigated.

Modification of naturally abundant resources for remediation of potentially toxic elements: A review

Water and soil contamination due to potentially toxic elements (PTEs) represents a critical threat to the global ecosystem and human health. Naturally abundant resources have significant advantages as adsorbent materials for environmental remediation over manufactured materials such as nanostructured materials and activated carbons. These advantages include cost-effectiveness, eco-friendliness, sustainability, and nontoxicity. In this review, we firstly compare the characteristics of representative adsorbent materials including bentonite, zeolite, biochar, biomass, and effective modification methods that are frequently used to enhance their adsorption capacity and kinetics. Following this, the adsorption pathways and sites are outlined at an atomic level, and an in-depth understanding of the structure-property relationships are provided based on surface functional groups. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of some emerging naturally abundant resources such as lignite are examined. Although both unamended and modified naturally abundant resources face challenges associated with their adsorption performance, cost performance, energy consumption, and secondary pollution, these can be tackled by using advanced techniques such as tailored modification, formulated mixing and reorganization of these materials. Recent studies on adsorbent materials provide a strong foundation for the remediation of PTEs in soil and water. We speculate that the pursuit of effective modification strategies will generate remediation processes of PTEs better suited to a wider variety of practical application conditions.

Bulk and interfacial nanostructure and properties in deep eutectic solvents: Current perspectives and future directions

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are a tailorable class of solvents that are rapidly gaining scientific and industrial interest. This is because they are distinct from conventional molecular solvents, inherently tuneable via careful selection of constituents, and possess many attractive properties for applications, including catalysis, chemical extraction, reaction media, novel lubricants, materials chemistry, and electrochemistry. DESs are a class of solvents composed solely of hydrogen bond donors and acceptors with a melting point lower than the individual components and are often fluidic at room temperature. A unique feature of DESs is that they possess distinct bulk liquid and interfacial nanostructure, which results from intra- and inter-molecular interactions, including coulomb forces, hydrogen bonding, van der Waals interactions, electrostatics, dispersion forces, and apolar-polar segregation. This nanostructure manifests as preferential spatial arrangements of the different species, and exists over several length scales, from molecular- to nano- and meso-scales. The physicochemical properties of DESs are dictated by structure-property relationships; however, there is a significant gap in our understanding of the underlying factors which govern their solvent properties. This is a major limitation of DES-based technologies, as nanostructure can significantly influence physical properties and thus potential applications. This perspective provides an overview of the current state of knowledge of DES nanostructure, both in the bulk liquid and at solid interfaces. We provide definitions which clearly distinguish DESs as a unique solvent class, rather than a subset of ILs. An appraisal of recent work provides hints towards trends in structure-property relationships, while also highlighting inconsistencies within the literature suggesting new research directions for the field. It is hoped that this review will provide insight into DES nanostructure, their potential applications, and development of a robust framework for systematic investigation moving forward.

Nanostructure of a deep eutectic solvent at solid interfaces

HYPOTHESIS

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are an attractive class of tunable solvents. However, their uptake for relevant applications has been limited due to a lack of detailed information on their structure-property relationships, both in the bulk and at interfaces. The lateral nanostructure of the DES-solid interfaces is likely to be more complex than previously reported and requires detailed, high-resolution investigation.

EXPERIMENTS

We employ a combination of high-resolution amplitude-modulated atomic force microscopy and molecular dynamics simulations to elucidate the lateral nanostructure of a DES at the solid-liquid interface. Specifically, the lateral and near-surface nanostructure of the DES choline chloride:glycerol is probed at the mica and highly-ordered pyrolytic graphite interfaces.

FINDINGS

The lateral nanostructure of the DES-solid interface is heterogeneous and well-ordered in both systems. At the mica interface, the DES is strongly ordered via polar interactions. The adsorbed layer has a distinct rhomboidal symmetry with a repeat spacing of ~0.9 nm comprising all DES species. At the highly ordered pyrolytic graphite interface, the adsorbed layer appears distinctly different, forming an apolor-driven row-like structure with a repeat spacing of ~0.6 nm, which largely excludes the chloride ion. The interfacial nanostructure results from a delicate balance of substrate templating, liquid-liquid interactions, species surface affinity, and packing constraints of cations, anions, and molecular components within the DES. For both systems, distinct near-surface nanostructural layering is observed, which becomes more pronounced close to the substrate. The surface nanostructures elucidated here significantly expand our understanding of DES interfacial behavior and will enhance the optimization of DES systems for surface-based applications.

Microstructural and Dynamical Heterogeneities in Ionic Liquids

Ionic liquids (ILs) are a special category of molten salts solely composed of ions with varied molecular symmetry and charge delocalization. The versatility in combining varied cation-anion moieties and in functionalizing ions with different atoms and molecular groups contributes to their peculiar interactions ranging from weak isotropic associations to strong, specific, and anisotropic forces. A delicate interplay among intra- and intermolecular interactions facilitates the formation of heterogeneous microstructures and liquid morphologies, which further contributes to their striking dynamical properties. Microstructural and dynamical heterogeneities of ILs lead to their multifaceted properties described by an inherent designer feature, which makes ILs important candidates for novel solvents, electrolytes, and functional materials in academia and industrial applications. Due to a massive number of combinations of ion pairs with ion species having distinct molecular structures and IL mixtures containing varied molecular solvents, a comprehensive understanding of their hierarchical structural and dynamical quantities is of great significance for a rational selection of ILs with appropriate properties and thereafter advancing their macroscopic functionalities in applications. In this review, we comprehensively trace recent advances in understanding delicate interplay of strong and weak interactions that underpin their complex phase behaviors with a particular emphasis on understanding heterogeneous microstructures and dynamics of ILs in bulk liquids, in mixtures with cosolvents, and in interfacial regions.

Uncovering the Underlying Mechanisms Governing the Solidlike Layering of Ionic Liquids (ILs) on Mica

Significant progress has been made in understanding the IL-solid interface in the past three decades, and a key finding is that ILs can form solidlike layers at the interface. It has been recognized that the electrostatic forces at the solid-IL interface and self-assembly of ILs are key enablers of the IL layering. However, regarding the layering structure of ILs, research from different laboratories is not consistent; i.e., the number of solidlike layers could range from 0 to ∼60, indicating the complexity of the underlying mechanisms and/or the existence of overlooked key parameters. In the current review, we will discuss the underlying mechanisms and key parameters governing the layering of ILs on mica, the most studied model solid. First, we will present the experimental findings from various laboratories, both consistent and contradictory ones, and summarize the current understanding of the governing mechanisms. Then, we will discuss the possible key parameters, including the structure of ILs, surface modification and contamination of mica, and cosolvent impacting the solidlike layering of ILs. Finally, we will discuss future research directions in uncovering the underlying mechanisms.

Structural, Thermodiffusive and Thermoelectric Properties of Maghemite Nanoparticles Dispersed in Ethylammonium Nitrate

Ethylammonium nitrate (ionic liquid) based ferrofluids with citrate-coated nanoparticles and Na + counterions were synthesized for a wide range of nanoparticle (NP) volume fractions ( Φ ) of up to 16%. Detailed structural analyses on these fluids were performed using magneto-optical birefringence and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) methods. Furthermore, the thermophoretic and thermodiffusive properties (Soret coefficient S T and diffusion coefficient D m ) were explored by forced Rayleigh scattering experiments as a function of T and Φ . They were compared to the thermoelectric potential (Seebeck coefficient, Se) properties induced in these fluids. The results were analyzed using a modified theoretical model on S T and Se adapted from an existing model developed for dispersions in more standard polar media which allows the determination of the Eastman entropy of transfer ( S ^ NP ) and the effective charge ( Z 0 e f f ) of the nanoparticles.

Bacterial-nanostructure interactions: The role of cell elasticity and adhesion forces

The attachment of single-celled organisms, namely bacteria and fungi, to abiotic surfaces is of great interest to both the scientific and medical communities. This is because the interaction of such cells has important implications in a range of areas, including biofilm formation, biofouling, antimicrobial surface technologies, and bio-nanotechnologies, as well as infection development, control, and mitigation. While central to many biological phenomena, the factors which govern microbial surface attachment are still not fully understood. This lack of understanding is a direct consequence of the complex nature of cell-surface interactions, which can involve both specific and non-specific interactions. For applications involving micro- and nano-structured surfaces, developing an understanding of such phenomenon is further complicated by the diverse nature of surface architectures, surface chemistry, variation in cellular physiology, and the intended technological output. These factors are extremely important to understand in the emerging field of antibacterial nanostructured surfaces. The aim of this perspective is to re-frame the discussion surrounding the mechanism of nanostructured-microbial surface interactions. Broadly, the article reviews our current understanding of these phenomena, while highlighting the knowledge gaps surrounding the adhesive forces which govern bacterial-nanostructure interactions and the role of cell membrane rigidity in modulating surface activity. The roles of surface charge, cell rigidity, and cell-surface adhesion force in bacterial-surface adsorption are discussed in detail. Presently, most studies have overlooked these areas, which has left many questions unanswered. Further, this perspective article highlights the numerous experimental issues and misinterpretations which surround current studies of antibacterial nanostructured surfaces.

From Molecular Arrangement to Macroscopic Wetting of Ionic Liquids on the Mica Surface: Effect of Humidity

To optimize the wetting performance of ionic liquids (ILs) on solid surfaces, which is important in catalysis, lubrication, and energy storage, it is critical to control the molecular arrangement of ILs at the IL/solid interface. Here, we report our experimental results, showing that tuning humidity is a facile and effective approach manipulating the molecular arrangement and thus controlling the macroscopic wettability of ILs on the mica surface. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, contact angle testing, and atomic force microscopy results showed that with the increase of humidity, more water adsorbs on the mica surface, which dissolves and mobilizes K⁺ on the mica. As a result, the cations of ILs occupy the empty spot left by the K⁺ and initiate the layering of ILs. The water-enabled ion exchange and IL layering processes result in not only the decrease of the IL contact angle on the mica but also the time-dependent contact angle. The finding here potentially provides a new dimension tailoring the performance of ILs at the IL/solid interface.

Adsorption of organic molecules on mineral surfaces studied by first-principle calculations: A review

First-principle calculations, especially by the density functional theory (DFT) methods, are becoming a power technique to study molecular structure and properties of organic/inorganic interfaces. This review introduces some recent examples on the study of adsorption models of organic molecules or oligomers on mineral surfaces and interfacial properties obtained from first-principles calculations. The aim of this contribution is to inspire scientists to benefit from first-principle calculations and to apply the similar strategies when studying and tailoring interfacial properties at the atomistic scale, especially for those interested in the design and development of new molecules and new products.

Mapping the Free Energy of Lithium Solvation in the Protic Ionic Liquid Ethylammonuim Nitrate: A Metadynamics Study

Understanding lithium solvation and transport in ionic liquids is important due to their possible application in electrochemical devices. Using first-principles simulations aided by a metadynamics approach we study the free-energy landscape for lithium ions at infinite dilution in ethylammonium nitrate, a protic ionic liquid. We analyze the local structure of the liquid around the lithium cation and obtain a quantitative picture in agreement with experimental findings. Our simulations show that the lowest two free energy minima correspond to conformations with the lithium ion being solvated either by three or four nitrate ions with a transition barrier between them of 0.2 eV. Other less probable conformations having different solvation pattern are also investigated.

Switchable long-range double layer force observed in a protic ionic liquid

A repulsive double layer force has been measured for ethylammonium nitrate (EAN) at 373 K and 393 K, which is absent at lower temperatures.

Influence of Water on the Interfacial Nanostructure and Wetting of [Rmim][NTf2] Ionic Liquids at Mica Surfaces

The effect of water concentration on the interfacial nanostructure and wetting behavior of a family of ionic liquids (ILs), 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, [Rmim][NTf2], at the surface of mica was investigated by contact angle measurement and atomic force microscopy (AFM). AFM reveals that interfacial layers of ILs observed at the surface of mica for "dry" ILs are not present for water-saturated ILs. The interaction of the IL ions of [Rmim][NTf2] with water molecules through hydrogen bonding is suspected to disrupt IL ion layering and precursor film growth on mica. Without the IL precursor film, contact angle relaxation of "wet" ILs on mica is less significant and ambient vapor adsorption becomes more important in determining the macroscopic wetting behavior.
