Synthesis of antireflective silica coatings through the synergy of polypeptide layer-by-layer assemblies and biomineralization

Synergistic Combination of Dual Clays in Multilayered Nanocomposites for Enhanced Flame Retardant Properties

In an effort to reduce the flammability of synthetic polymeric materials such as cotton fabrics and polyurethane foam (PUF), hybrid nanocoatings are prepared by layer-by-layer assembly. Multilayered nanocomposites of a cationic polyelectrolyte, poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA), are paired with two kinds of clay nanoplatelets, montmorillonite (MMT) and vermiculite (VMT). The physical properties such as thickness and mass and thermal behaviors in clay-based nanocoatings with and without incorporation of tris buffer are compared to assess the effectiveness of amine salts on flame retardant (FR) performances. A PDDA-tris/VMT-MMT system, in which tris buffer is introduced into the cationic PDDA aqueous solution, produces a thicker and heavier coating. Three different systems, including PDDA/MMT, PDDA/VMT-MMT, and PDDA-tris/VMT-MMT, result in conformal coating, retaining the weave structure of the fabrics after being exposed to a vertical and horizontal flame test, while the uncoated sample is completely burned out. The synergistic effects of dual clay-based hybrid nanocoatings are greatly improved by adding amine salts. Cone calorimetry reveals that the PDDA-tris/VMT-MMT-coated PUF eliminates a second peak heat release rate and significantly reduces other FR performances, compared to those obtained from the clay-based multilayer films with no amine salts added. Ten bilayers of PDDA-tris/VMT-MMT (≈250 nm thick) maintain the shape of foam after exposure to a butane torch flame for 12 s. As for practical use of these nanocomposites in real fire disasters, spray-assisted PDDA-tris/VMT-MMT multilayers on woods exhibit high resistance over flammability. Improved fire resistance in PDDA-tris/VMT-MMT is believed to be due to the enhanced char yield through the addition of tris buffer that promotes the deposition of more clay particles while retaining a highly ordered deposition of a densely packed nanobrick wall structure. This work demonstrates the ability to impart significant fire resistance to synthetic polymer materials in a fully renewable nanocoating that uses environmentally benign chemistry.

Omnidirectional antireflective coatings prepared with chitin nanofibers via layer-by-layer self-assembly

Antireflective coatings play an important role in various optical devices. Herein, we developed omnidirectional antireflective coatings fabricated with charged chitin nanofibers (ChNFs) through layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly technology. The charged ChNFs were prepared from chitin with modifications of esterification (negatively charged) and esterification followed partial deacetylation (positively charged), respectively, through ultrasonic treatment. The effects of concentration of the ChNF suspensions and number of bilayers on thickness, refractive index and antireflective capacity of the ChNF coatings were investigated. Refractive index of the ChNF coatings can be manipulated by changing concentration of the ChNF suspensions. Thickness of the ChNF coatings depends on number of bilayers and concentration of the ChNF suspensions. The ChNF coating on a glass substrate with 5 bilayers fabricated using the suspensions with concentration 0.1% had a refractive index of 1.36 and yielded 4% gain in transmittance compared to the glass at the wavelength of 550 nm. This work demonstrates that charged ChNFs are promising building blocks to fabricate antireflective coatings on large size substrates with high efficiency and low cost through LbL self-assembly.

Pinecone-Inspired Nanoarchitectured Smart Microcages Enable Nano/Microparticle Drug Delivery

Drug delivery plays a vital role in medicine and health, but the on-demand delivery of large-sized drugs using stimuli-triggered carriers is extremely challenging. Most present capsules consist of polymeric dense shells with nanosized pores (<10 nm), thus typically lack permeability for nano/microparticle drugs. Here, a pinecone-inspired smart microcage with open network shells, assembled from cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs), is reported for nano/microparticle drug delivery. The approach allows the nanoarchitectured, functionalized CNFs to assemble into mechanically robust, haystack-like network shells with tunable large-through pores and polypeptide-anchored points on a large scale. Such open network shells can intelligently open/close triggered by lesion stimuli, making the therapy "always on-demand." The resulting pinecone-inspired microcages exhibit integrated properties of superior structural stability, superhydrophilicity, and pH-triggered, smart across-shell transport of emerging antimicrobial silver nanoparticles and bioactive silicate nanoplatelets (sizes of >100 nm), which enable both extraordinary anti-infection and bone regeneration. This work provides new insights into the design and development of multifunctional encapsulation and delivery carriers for medical and environmental applications.

Green synthesis of gold nanoparticle/gelatin/protein nanogels with enhanced bioluminescence/biofluorescence

Here we report the green synthesis of gelatin/protein hybrid nanogels containing gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) that collectively exhibit metal-enhanced luminescence/fluorescence (MEL/MEF). The gelatin/protein nanogels, prepared by genipin cross-linking of preformed gelatin/protein polyion complexes (PICs), exhibited sizes ranging between 50 and 200 nm, depending on the weight ratio of gelatin and protein. These nanogels serve as reducing and stabilizing agents for the AuNPs, allowing for nucleation in a gel network that exhibits colloidal stability and MEL/MEF. AuNP/gelatin/HRP and AuNP/gelatin/LTF nanogels presented an ~11-fold enhancement of bioluminescence in an HRP-luminol system and a ~50-fold fluorescence enhancement when compared to free LTF in cell uptake experiments. These hybrid nanogels show promise for optically enhanced diagnosis and other therapeutic applications.

Polyelectrolyte complex films influence the formation of polycrystalline micro-structures

Silica-carbonate biomorphs are inorganic materials composed of thousands of crystalline nanorods that assemble complex morphologies such as helices, vessels, and sheets. We investigate the effect on biomorph crystallization of polyelectrolyte complex films that are prepared using the layer-by-layer deposition technique and post-processed to obtain three stable, chemically distinct films. Biomorph growth on poly(diallyldimethylammonium)-dominated substrates (cationic) shows polycrystalline helical and sheet structures bounded by large witherite prisms. Crystallization on poly(styrenesulfonate)-dominated (anionic) and stoichiometric substrates follows a qualitatively different pathway. We observe islands of radial mineral films that over several days extend at a remarkably constant velocity of 0.48 μm h-1 and eventually mineralize the whole substrate. Our work opens exciting avenues for the use of polyelectrolyte films as tunable substrates for biomimetic crystallization.

Biomimetic Synthesis of Antireflective Silica/Polymer Composite Coatings Comprising Vesicular Nanostructures

Antireflective (AR) silica/polymer composite coatings on glass and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) substrates were prepared by silica mineralization of layer-by-layer (LbL) assembled films composed of polystyrene-block-poly(l-lysine)/poly(l-glutamic acid) (PS-b-PLL/PGA) complex vesicles without any post-treatments. PS-b-PLL AB and A₂B block copolymers with appropriate block ratio can self-assemble to form vesicles, which can be deposited onto substrates without dissociation. Silica deposition specifically onto the complex vesicles in the multilayer films through amine-catalyzed polycondensation results in the continuous, intact composite coatings comprising vesicular nanostructures, which provided an additional parameter for tuning their optical properties. The film thickness and porosity are mainly dictated by the bilayer number and the degree of deformation/fission of vesicles upon complexation and mineralization, depending on polymer composition. The coated PMMA substrate with maximum transmission over 98% can be achieved at the optimized wavelength region. The AR composite films were mechanically stable to withstand both the wipe and adhesion tests due to the preparation of continuous, intact films. This study demonstrated that the concept of preparing composite films comprising vesicular nanostructures through the combination of LbL assembly and biomineralization is feasible.
