Abstract
Two narrow band gap conjugated ternary copolymers comprising two electron-rich (donor, D) and one electron-deficient (acceptor, A) moieties regularly alternating along the polymer backbone were designed and synthesized. The polymers with the repeating unit in a D1-A-D2-A manner were constructed by copolymerizing a bisstannyled-D1 (D1 = n-alkyl-substituted cyclopentadithiophene) and a dibromo-monomer (Br-A-D2-A-Br, D2 = branched-alkyl-substituted cyclopentadithiophene, A =[1,2,5]selenadiazolo[3,4-c]pyridine or 5-fluorobenzo[c][1,2,5]selenadiazole) through a palladium-catalyzed Stille polymerization. This approach that enables variations in the donor fragment substituents can not only control the polymer regiochemistry but also the solubility. Two ternary copolymers exhibited absorbance up to near-infrared region along with relatively narrow band gap in the range of 1.02–1.26 eV. The polymeric photovoltaic cells based on CDTPSE/PC61BM show the short circuit density of 1.45 mA cm−2, open current voltage of 0.53 V, and photocurrent spectra response from 300 to 1,150 nm under AM 1.5 simulator (100 mW cm−2). It is indicated that it can be potentially applied to near infrared photodetectors.

Abstract
The development of conjugated alternating donor-acceptor (D-A) copolymers with various electron-rich and electron-deficient units in polymer backbones has boosted the power conversion efficiency (PCE) over 17% for polymer solar cells (PSCs) over the past two decades. However, further enhancements in PCEs for PSCs are still imperative to compensate their imperfect stability for fulfilling practical applications. Meanwhile development of these alternating D-A copolymers is highly demanding in creative design and syntheses of novel D and/or A monomers. In this regard, when being possible to adopt an existing monomer unit as a third component from its libraries, either a D' unit or an A' moiety, to the parent D-A type polymer backbones to afford conjugated D-A terpolymers, it will give a facile and cost-effective method to improve their light absorption and tune energy levels and also interchain packing synergistically. Moreover, the rationally controlled stoichiometry for these components in such terpolymers also provides access for further fine-tuning these factors, thus resulting in high-performance PSCs. Herein, based on their unique features, the recent progress of conjugated D-A terpolymers for efficient PSCs is reviewed and it is discussed how these factors influence their photovoltaic performance, for providing useful guidelines to design new terpolymers toward high-efficiency PSCs.

Abstract
A novel donor-acceptor type conjugated polymer based on a building block of 4,8-di(thien-2-yl)-6-octyl-2-octyl-5H-pyrrolo[3,4-f]benzotriazole-5,7(6H)-dione (TZBI) as the acceptor unit and 4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophen-2-yl)-benzo-[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene as the donor unit, named as PTZBIBDT, is developed and used as an electron-donating material in bulk-heterojunction polymer solar cells. The resulting copolymer exhibits a wide bandgap of 1.81 eV along with relatively deep highest occupied molecular orbital energy level of -5.34 eV. Based on the optimized processing conditions, including thermal annealing, and the use of a water/alcohol cathode interlayer, the single-junction polymer solar cell based on PTZBIBDT:PC71BM ([6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester) blend film affords a power conversion efficiency of 8.63% with an open-circuit voltage of 0.87 V, a short circuit current of 13.50 mA cm-2, and a fill factor of 73.95%, which is among the highest values reported for wide-bandgap polymers-based single-junction organic solar cells. The morphology studies on the PTZBIBDT:PC71BM blend film indicate that a fibrillar network can be formed and the extent of phase separation can be mani-pulated by thermal annealing. These results indicate that the TZBI unit is a very promising building block for the synthesis of wide-bandgap polymers for high-performance single-junction and tandem (or multijunction) organic solar cells.

Abstract
We report a novel approach to tune the LUMO/HOMO energy levels of polymer donors by replacing a C–C unit with a B ← N unit. The polymer containing a B ← N unit exhibits lower LUMO/HOMO levels and a narrower bandgap, leading to an improved photovoltaic performance.
