Abstract
We investigate the use of an ionic liquid (IL) as a surfactant in emulsion polymerization (EP) reactions. ILs have been proposed as surfactants for micellar dispersions, emulsions, micro-emulsions and suspensions. Thus, it is important to acquire knowledge of the application of ILs in heterogeneous polymerizations. We selected the amphiphile cationic oligoether IoLiLyte C1EG™ as an IL for this purpose and compared its performance to that of the conventional surfactant dodecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (DTAB) in the EP of methyl methacrylate and styrene. After we found the proper concentration range of the IL, this amphiphile showed similar polymerization rates to those observed with DTAB for both monomers. The evolution of monomer conversion and the final average diameter of formed polymeric particles were similar for both evaluated surfactants, demonstrating their capability to stabilize the EPs of the investigated monomers. We simulated the evolution of monomer conversion and particle size using a conventional model for emulsion polymerization, which showed good agreement with the experimental data, suggesting that the EP with this IL follows Smith-Ewart kinetics.

Abstract
Here, an anionic surfactant [AOT]- (bis-(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate)-stabilized H2O/[Omim][PF6] (1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate) microemulsion has been tested for the first time as a medium for the electropolymerization of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT). To formulate AOT-stabilized [Omim][PF6]-based microemulsions of different water contents, the phase triangle was determined at 35 °C. Measurements of the conductivities of the microemulsions, their solubilization capacities toward EDOT and their catalytic effects on EDOT electrooxidation show that the present [AOT]--stabilized ionic liquid microemulsion is a good medium for EDOT electropolymerization. Studies on the process of the electropolymerization of EDOT in this [Omim][PF6]-based microemulsion indicate that the water content (i.e., microstructure) of the microemulsion medium is an important factor affecting the onset potential and the deposition rate of the PEDOT. The morphology and the doping level of the as-prepared PEDOT are also found to be correlated with the water content of the ionic liquid microemulsion. The microemulsion with higher water content results in a PEDOT with better electroactivity and higher doping levels. FTIR spectra and XPS analysis show that the PEDOT electrosynthesized in the microemulsion is co-doped by both [AOT]- and [PF6]-. Compared with the neat [Omim][PF6], the use of the ionic liquid microemulsions can reduce not only the consumption of the expensive ionic liquid, but also the onset potential for the electrooxidation of EDOT. Moreover, by tuning the water content of the medium, the electropolymerization of PEDOT and its electrochemical properties could be regulated accordingly. Under the identical deposited charge, the PEDOT originated from the high water content microemulsion (50% H2O μE) has a higher specific capacitance (124 F g-1) than that from neat [Omim][PF6] (117 F g-1). It follows that the present ionic liquid microemulsion is a good medium for EDOT electropolymerization. The present study opens up a new route for the green and low-cost electrochemical preparation of high-performance PEDOT.

Abstract
Task-specific ionic liquids (TSILs) are ionic liquids with structures and, consequently, properties and behaviors designed for particular applications. In this work, task-specific ILs with alkylammonium or benzalkonium cations and carboxyl groups in the form of lactate anions were used to promote the homogeneous dispersion of the curatives in the elastomer matrix. The reaction of carboxyl groups of TSILs with zinc oxide, which acts as a vulcanization activator, was confirmed. This interaction improved the solubility and dispersibility of zinc oxide particles in the ethylene-propylene-diene (EPDM) monomer matrix, which consequently affected the curing characteristics of rubber compounds. Most importantly, TSILs increased the efficiency of vulcanization by shortening the time, lowering the temperature and increasing the enthalpy of this process, while maintaining safe processing of elastomer composites. EPDM vulcanizates containing TSILs with lactate anion were characterized by satisfactory functional properties.

Abstract
We review recent works on the synthesis and application of poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs). Novel chemical structures, different synthetic strategies and controllable morphologies are introduced as a supplement to PIL systems already reported. The primary properties determining applications, such as ionic conductivity, aqueous solubility, thermodynamic stability and electrochemical/chemical durability, are discussed. Furthermore, the near-term applications of PILs in multiple fields, such as their use in electrochemical energy materials, stimuli-responsive materials, carbon materials, and antimicrobial materials, in catalysis, in sensors, in absorption and in separation materials, as well as several special-interest applications, are described in detail. We also discuss the limitations of PIL applications, efforts to improve PIL physics, and likely future developments.

Abstract
A new form of interfacial polymerization to synthesize thin-film composite membranes realizes a more sustainable membrane preparation and improved nanofiltration performance. By introducing an ionic liquid (IL) as the organic reaction phase, the extremely different physicochemical properties to those of commonly used organic solvents influenced the top-layer formation in several beneficial ways. In addition to the elimination of hazardous solvents in the preparation, the m-phenylenediamine (MPD) concentration could be reduced 20-fold, and the use of surfactants and catalysts became redundant. Together with the more complete recycling of the organic phase in the water/IL system, these factors resulted in a 50 % decrease in the mass intensity of the top-layer formation. Moreover, a much thinner top layer with a high ethanol permeance of 0.61 L m(-2) h(-1) bar(-1) [99 % Rose Bengal (RB, 1017 Da) retention; 1 bar=0.1 MPa] was formed without the use of any additives. This EtOH permeance is 555 and 161 % higher than that for the conventional interfacial polymerization (without and with additives, respectively). In reverse osmosis, high NaCl retentions of 97 % could be obtained. Finally, the remarkable decrease in the membrane surface roughness indicates the potential for reduced fouling with this new type of membrane.
