Phase Behavior and Conformational Asymmetry near the Comb-to-Bottlebrush Transition in Linear-Brush Block Copolymers

This study explores how conformational asymmetry influences the bulk phase behavior of linear-brush block copolymers. We synthesized 60 diblock copolymers composed of poly(trifluoroethyl methacrylate) as the linear block and poly[oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate] as the brush block, varying the molecular weight, composition, and side-chain length to introduce different degrees of conformational asymmetry. Using small-angle X-ray scattering, we determined the morphology and phase diagrams for three different side-chain length systems, mainly observing lamellar and cylindrical phases. Increasing the side-chain length of the brush block from three to nine ethylene oxide units introduces sufficient asymmetry between the blocks to alter the phase behavior, shifting the lamellar-to-cylindrical transitions toward lower brush block compositions and transitioning the brush block from the dense comb-like regime to the bottlebrush regime. Coarse-grained simulations support our experimental observations and provide a mapping between the composition and conformational asymmetry. A comparison of our findings to strong stretching theory across multiple phase boundary predictions confirms the transition between the dense comb-like regime and the bottlebrush regime.

Effect of the Addition of Diblock Copolymer Nanoparticles on the Evaporation Kinetics and Final Particle Morphology for Drying Aqueous Aerosol Droplets

A deeper understanding of the key processes that determine the particle morphologies generated during aerosol droplet drying is highly desirable for spray-drying of powdered pharmaceuticals and foods, predicting the properties of atmospheric particles, and monitoring disease transmission. Particle morphologies are affected by the drying kinetics of the evaporating droplets, which are in turn influenced by the composition of the initial droplet as well as the drying conditions. Herein, we use polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) to prepare three types of sterically stabilized diblock copolymer nanoparticles comprising the same steric stabilizer block and differing core blocks with z-average diameters ranging from 32 to 238 nm. These well-defined nanoparticles enable a systematic investigation of the effect of the nanoparticle size and composition on the drying kinetics of aqueous aerosol droplets (20-28 μm radius) and the final morphology of the resulting microparticles. A comparative kinetics electrodynamic balance was used to obtain evaporation profiles for 10 examples of nanoparticles at a relative humidity (RH) of 0, 45, or 65%. Nanoparticles comprising the same core block with mean diameters of 32, 79, and 214 nm were used to produce microparticles, which were dried under different RH conditions in a falling droplet column. Scanning electron microscopy was used to examine how the drying kinetics influenced the final microparticle morphology. For dilute droplets, the chemical composition of the nanoparticles had no effect on the evaporation rate. However, employing smaller nanoparticles led to the formation of dried microparticles with a greater degree of buckling.

Fluoropolymer Nanoparticles Synthesized via Reversible-Deactivation Radical Polymerizations and Their Applications

Fluorinated polymeric nanoparticles (FPNPs) combine unique properties of fluorocarbon and polymeric nanoparticles, which has stimulated massive interest for decades. However, fluoropolymers are not readily available from nature, resulting in synthetic developments to obtain FPNPs via free radical polymerizations. Recently, while increasing cutting-edge directions demand tailored FPNPs, such materials have been difficult to access via conventional approaches. Reversible-deactivation radical polymerizations (RDRPs) are powerful methods to afford well-defined polymers. Researchers have applied RDRPs to the fabrication of FPNPs, enabling the construction of particles with improved complexity in terms of structure, composition, morphology, and functionality. Related examples can be classified into three categories. First, well-defined fluoropolymers synthesized via RDRPs have been utilized as precursors to form FPNPs through self-folding and solution self-assembly. Second, thermally and photoinitiated RDRPs have been explored to realize in situ preparations of FPNPs with varied morphologies via polymerization-induced self-assembly and cross-linking copolymerization. Third, grafting from inorganic nanoparticles has been investigated based on RDRPs. Importantly, those advancements have promoted studies toward promising applications, including magnetic resonance imaging, biomedical delivery, energy storage, adsorption of perfluorinated alkyl substances, photosensitizers, and so on. This Review should present useful knowledge to researchers in polymer science and nanomaterials and inspire innovative ideas for the synthesis and applications of FPNPs.

Recent Development in Topological Polymer Electrolytes for Rechargeable Lithium Batteries

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are still being considered as a candidate to replace liquid electrolytes for high-safety and flexible lithium batteries due to their superiorities including light-weight, good flexibility, and shape versatility. However, inefficient ion transportation of linear polymer electrolytes is still the biggest challenge. To improve ion transport capacity, developing novel polymer electrolytes are supposed to be an effective strategy. Nonlinear topological structures such as hyperbranched, star-shaped, comb-like, and brush-like types have highly branched features. Compared with linear polymer electrolytes, topological polymer electrolytes possess more functional groups, lower crystallization, glass transition temperature, and better solubility. Especially, a large number of functional groups are beneficial to dissociation of lithium salt for improving the ion conductivity. Furthermore, topological polymers have strong design ability to meet the requirements of comprehensive performances of SPEs. In this review, the recent development in topological polymer electrolytes is summarized and their design thought is analyzed. Outlooks are also provided for the development of future SPEs. It is expected that this review can raise a strong interest in the structural design of advanced polymer electrolyte, which can give inspirations for future research on novel SPEs and promote the development of next-generation high-safety flexible energy storage devices.

Mapping the Interfacial Chemistry and Structure of Partially Fluorinated Bottlebrush Polymers and Their Linear Analogues

Polymer interfaces are key to a range of applications including membranes for chemical separations, hydrophobic coatings, and passivating layers for antifouling. While important, challenges remain in probing the interfacial monolayer where the molecular ordering and orientation can change depending on the chemical makeup or processing conditions. In this work, we leverage surface specific vibrational sum frequency generation (SFG) and the associated dependence on molecular symmetry to elucidate the ordering and orientations of key functional groups for poly(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl methacrylate) bottlebrush polymers and their linear polymer analogues. These measurements were framed by atomistic molecular dynamic simulations to provide a complementary physical picture of the gas-polymer interface. Simulations and SFG measurements show that methacrylate backbones are buried beneath a layer of trifluoroethyl containing side groups that result in structurally similar interfaces regardless of the polymer molecular weight or architecture. The average orientational angles of the trifluoroethyl containing side groups differ depending on polymer linear and bottlebrush architectures, suggesting that the surface groups can reorient via available rotational degrees of freedom. Results show that the surfaces of the bottlebrush and linear polymer samples do not strongly depend on molecular weight or architecture. As such, one cannot rely on increasing the molecular weight or altering the architecture to tune surface properties. This insight into the polymer interfacial structure is expected to advance the design of new material interfaces with tailored chemical/functional properties.

Design, Synthesis, and Self-Assembly of Janus Bottlebrush Polymers

Janus bottlebrush polymers are a class of special molecular brushes, which have two immiscible side chains on the repeating unit of the backbone. The characteristic architectures of Janus bottlebrush polymers enable unique self-assembly properties and broad applications. Recently, remarkable advances of Janus bottlebrush polymers have been achieved for polymer chemistry and material science. This review summarizes the synthetic strategies of Janus bottlebrush polymers, and highlights the self-assembly applications. Finally, the challenges and opportunities are proposed for the further development.

Rapid Processing of Bottlebrush Coatings through UV-Induced Cross-Linking

Bottlebrush polymers can be used to introduce novel surface properties including hydrophilicity, stimuli-responsiveness, and reduced friction forces. However, simple, general, and efficient approaches to cross-linking bottlebrush polymer films and coatings are limited. Here, we report that bottlebrush polymers with an unsaturated polynorbornene backbone and thiol-terminated side chains can be cross-linked on demand by UV irradiation to produce uniform and insoluble bottlebrush polymer coatings. To quantify the kinetics and efficiency of cross-linking by UV exposure (254 nm), we measured the normalized residual thickness (NRT) of bottlebrush and linear polymer films after UV exposure and solvent washing. For bottlebrush polymers with thiol-terminated polystyrene (PS) side chains, the NRT exceeded 60% for a UV dose of 1.0 J/cm², while unfunctionalized linear PS required a dose of 7.9 J/cm² to achieve similar NRT values. Rapid UV-induced cross-linking of the bottlebrush PS was attributed to the thiol-ene coupling of the thiol-terminated side chains with the unsaturated polynorbornene backbones, as demonstrated through FTIR measurements and control studies involving bottlebrush polymers with saturated backbones. To establish the broader applicability of this approach, UV-induced cross-linking was demonstrated for thin films of bottlebrush polymers with thiol-terminated poly(methyl acrylate) (BB-PMMA-SH) side chains and those with poly(ethylene glycol) (BB-PEG) and poly(lactic acid) (BB-PLA) side chains which do not contain thiol end groups. UV-induced cross-linking of BB-PEG and BB-PLA films required the use of a multifunctional thiol additive. Finally, we demonstrated that bottlebrush polymer multilayers can be fabricated through sequential deposition and UV-induced cross-linking of different bottlebrush polymer chemistries. The cross-linking process outlined in this work is simple, general, and efficient and produces solvent-resistant coatings that preserve the unique properties and functions of bottlebrush polymers.

Anilinium Salts in Polymer Networks for Materials with Mechanical Stability and Mild Thermally Induced Dynamic Properties

Dynamic nucleophilic exchange of quaternary anilinium salts has been incorporated into rehealable and malleable polymeric materials that can be activated under mild (60 °C) thermal stimulus. The mechanism of dynamic exchange between quaternary anilinium salt and free aniline was assessed in small-molecule model experiments. The dynamic exchange was found to be dissociative in nature, due to the indirect S_N2 mechanism, where initially the bromide anion attacks the anilinium salt to generate an alkyl bromide which undergoes subsequent attack by a free aniline group. A quaternary anilinium-based cross-linker was synthesized to act as dynamic linkages in the polymer network. Cross-linked polymeric materials showed thermoresponsive rehealing and malleability properties at 60 °C along with being resistant to irreversible creep under ambient conditions. The use of anilinium salts enables dynamic exchange to occur with significantly milder thermal stimulus than other comparable materials, while maintaining mechanical stability.

Grubbs' and Schrock's Catalysts, Ring Opening Metathesis Polymerization and Molecular Brushes-Synthesis, Characterization, Properties and Applications

In this review, molecular brushes and other macromolecular architectures bearing a bottlebrush segment where the main chain is synthesized by ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) mediated by Mo or Ru metal complexes are considered. A brief review of metathesis and ROMP is presented in order to understand the problems and the solutions provided through the years. The synthetic strategies towards bottlebrush copolymers are demonstrated and each one discussed separately. The initiators/catalysts for the synthesis of the backbone with ROMP are discussed. Syntheses of molecular brushes are presented. The most interesting properties of the bottlebrushes are detailed. Finally, the applications studied by different groups are presented.

Molecular reorganization in bulk bottlebrush polymers: direct observation via nanoscale imaging

Bottlebrush polymers are important for a variety of applications ranging from drug delivery to electronics. The functional flexibility of the branched sidechains has unique assembly properties when compared to linear block polymer systems. However, reports of direct observation of molecular reorganization have been sparse. This information is necessary to enhance the understanding of the structure-property relationships in these systems and yield a rational design approach for novel polymeric materials. In this work, we report direct visualization of bottlebrush molecular organization and the formation of nematic-type ordering in an amorphous polymer bottlebrush system, captured with plasma etching and helium ion microscopy. By observing the unperturbed structure of this material at high resolution and quantifying image features, we were able to qualitatively link experimental results with structures predicted by coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. The direct visualization and computation workflow developed in this work can be applied to a broad variety of polymers with different architectures, linking imaging results with other, independent channels of information for better understanding and control of these classes of materials.

Well-Defined and Precision-Grafted Bottlebrush Polypentenamers from Variable Temperature ROMP and ATRP

Polypentenamer macroinitiators are synthesized through variable temperature ring opening metathesis polymerization of 3-cyclopentenyl α-bromoisobutyrate, which has sufficient ring strain (ΔH_p = -22.6 kJ mol^-1) to produce targeted molar mass (<5% from theoretical), low dispersity (1.17 ≤ Đ ≤ 1.23), and high conversion (∼72%). An initiation site for atom-transfer radical polymerization at every fifth backbone carbon allows "grafting-from" of styrene with quantitative initiation and linear molar mass increase with time. These bottlebrushes retain a low dispersity (Đ ≤ 1.34) at varying graft degrees of polymerization (5 ≤ N_sc ≤ 49) and have a glass transition temperature highly sensitized to graft length. Extension of the grafts with methyl methacrylate produces a core-shell brush polymer with high molar mass (>1000 kg mol^-1) and Đ = 1.33. This system exhibits high synthetic versatility and control with a unique flexible backbone to expand the suite of densely grafted polymers.

Significantly High Thermal Rectification in an Asymmetric Polymer Molecule Driven by Diffusive versus Ballistic Transport

Tapered bottlebrush polymers have novel nanoscale polymer architecture. Using nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations, we showed that these polymers have the unique ability to generate thermal rectification in a single polymer molecule and offer an exceptional platform for unveiling different heat conduction regimes. In sharp contrast to all other reported asymmetric nanostructures, we observed that the heat current from the wide end to the narrow end (the forward direction) in tapered bottlebrush polymers is smaller than that in the opposite direction (the backward direction). We found that a more disordered to less disordered structural transition within tapered bottlebrush polymers is essential for generating nonlinearity in heat conduction for thermal rectification. Moreover, the thermal rectification ratio increased with device length, reaching as high as ∼70% with a device length of 28.5 nm. This large thermal rectification with strong length dependence uncovered an unprecedented phenomenon-diffusive thermal transport in the forward direction and ballistic thermal transport in the backward direction. This is the first observation of radically different transport mechanisms when heat flow direction changes in the same system. The fundamentally new knowledge gained from this study can guide exciting research into nanoscale organic thermal diodes.

Compressing and Swelling To Study the Structure of Extremely Soft Bottlebrush Networks Prepared by ROMP

To fully explore bottlebrush polymer networks as potential model materials, a robust and versatile synthetic platform is required. Ring-opening metathesis polymerization is a highly controlled, rapid, and functional group tolerant polymerization technique that has been used extensively for bottlebrush polymer generation but to this point has not been used to synthesize bottlebrush polymer networks. We polymerized a mononorbornene macromonomer and dinorbornene cross-linker (both poly(n-butyl acrylate)) with Grubbs' third-generation catalyst to achieve bottlebrush networks and in turn demonstrated control over network properties as the ratio of macromonomer and cross-linker was varied. Macromonomer to cross-linker ratios ([ MM ] / [ XL ] ) of 10 to 100 were investigated, of which all derivative networks yielded gel fractions over 90%. Because of its amenability toward small samples, contact adhesion testing was used to quantify dry-state shear modulus G , which ranged from 1 to 10 kPa, reinforcing that bottlebrush polymer networks can achieve low moduli in the dry state compared to other polymer network materials through the mitigation of entanglements. A scaling relationship was found such that G ∼ ( [ MM ] / [ XL ] ) - 0.81 , indicating that macromonomer to cross-linker ratio is a good estimator of cross-linking density. The swelling ratio in toluene, Q , was compared to dry-state modulus to test the universal scaling relationship for linear networks G ∼ Q - 1.75 , and a measured exponent of -1.71 indicated good agreement. The synthetic platform outlined here represents a highly flexible route to a myriad of different bottlebrush networks and will increase the accessibility of materials critical to applications ranging from fundamental to biomedical.

An efficient route to synthesize thermoresponsive molecular bottlebrushes of poly[o-aminobenzyl alcohol-graft-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)]

Perfluorocyclobutyl Aryl Ether-Based ABC Amphiphilic Triblock Copolymer

A series of fluorine-containing amphiphilic ABC triblock copolymers comprising hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA), and hydrophobic poly(p-(2-(4-biphenyl)perfluorocyclobutoxy)phenyl methacrylate) (PBPFCBPMA) segments were synthesized by successive atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). First, PEG-Br macroinitiators bearing one terminal ATRP initiating group were prepared by chain-end modification of monohydroxy-terminated PEG via esterification reaction. PEG-b-PBPFCBPMA-Br diblock copolymers were then synthesized via ATRP of BPFCBPMA monomer initiated by PEG-Br macroinitiator. ATRP polymerization of tert-butyl methacrylate (tBMA) was directly initiated by PEG-b-PBPFCBPMA-Br to provide PEG-b-PBPFCBPMA-b-PtBMA triblock copolymers with relatively narrow molecular weight distributions (M_w/M_n ≤ 1.43). The pendant tert-butyoxycarbonyls were hydrolyzed to carboxyls in acidic environment without affecting other functional groups for affording PEG-b-PBPFCBPMA-b-PMAA amphiphilic triblock copolymers. The critical micelle concentrations (cmc) were determined by fluorescence spectroscopy using N-phenyl-1-naphthylamine as probe and the self-assembly behavior in aqueous media were investigated by transmission electron microscopy. Large compound micelles and bowl-shaped micelles were formed in neutral aqueous solution. Interestingly, large compound micelles formed by triblock copolymers can separately or simultaneously encapsulate hydrophilic Rhodamine 6G and hydrophobic pyrene agents.

Enhanced Surface Properties of Branched Poly(ether sulfone) from Semifluorinated Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsequioxanes

Hybrid systems in which poly(ether sulfone) (PESU) chains are grafted to semifluorinated polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) cores are expected to integrate the advantages of both fluoropolymers and POSS into the polymer system to yield excellent surface properties. For that purpose, we synthesized a novel octa-functional perfluorocyclopentenyl-POSS (PFCP-POSS), which was used as a "core" grafting point. Commercial PESU was successfully grafted to PFCP-POSS via the nucleophilic addition-elimination reaction between the phenolic chain ends and reactive PFCP moieties to yield a hybrid branched polymer possessing a semifluorinated POSS core. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, neutron reflectivity, and atomic force microscopy indicated that the preparation of nanostructured polymer surfaces occurs by migration of the low surface energy components (PFCP-POSS molecules), while POSS aggregation is suppressed by covalent attachment to the long PESU chains. The resulting PFCP-POSS modified PESU films were highly transparent and yielded hydrophobic surfaces with low surface energy and high modulus for potential applications in high performance coatings and composites.
