Abstract
The development of a sustainable and simple catalytic system for N-formylation of N-heterocycles with methanol by direct coupling remains a challenge, owing to many competing side reactions, given the sensitivity of N-heterocycles to many catalytic oxidation or dehydrogenation systems. This work concerns the development of an in situ-generated CuI catalytic system for oxidative N-formylation of N-heterocycles with methanol that is based on the case study of a more typical 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline as substrate. Aside from N-heterocycles, some acyclic amines are also transformed into the corresponding N-formamides in moderate yields. Furthermore, a probable reaction mechanism and reaction pathway are proposed and extension of work based on some findings leads to a demonstration that the formed ⋅O2 - and ⋅OOH radicals in the catalytic system is related to the formation of undesired tar-like products.

Abstract
The purpose of this work was to determine the tautomerism, the conformational analysis and photoreactivity of dehydroacetic acid (DHAA, 1). For that reason, the photolysis of DHAA (1) was performed at 254 nm and compared with two structurally similar compounds: 2-hydroxyacetophenone (HAP, 2) and 2-acetyl-1,3-cyclohexanodione (ACH, 3). We confirmed the degradation of 1 to acetic acid and we propose a mechanism on the assumption that a [2+2] cyclodimerization occurs (after UV light absorption) followed by some consecutive Norrish Type I cleavages, affording ketenes that end-up in acetic acid. The UV absorption study was conducted for all three compounds to gain insight about their electronic transitions, both experimentally and with computational simulations using TDDFT (B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p)) methods. A detailed analysis of the different tautomers and isomers that can be present in solution and the MOs involved in the electronic transitions was also achieved. The HOMO→LUMO transition was the least energetic optically active transition for 1 and 2, whereas 3 was recognized to have a HOMO-1→LUMO transition. These transitions were all of n→π∗ character.

Abstract
A thorough analysis of the photophysical properties involved in electronic transitions in excitation-emission spectra of xylene isomers has been carried out using the time-dependent density functional theory (PBEPBE/6-31 + G(d,p)) method. For the first time a structural and spectroscopic investigation to distinguish isomers of xylene, a widespread priority pollutant, was conducted experimentally and theoretically. The fluorescence properties of xylene isomers (sole and mixture (binary and ternary)) in water were studied. The fluorescence peak intensities of xylenes were linearly correlated to concentration, in the order of p-xylene > o-xylene > m-xylene at an excitation/emission wavelength (ex/em) of 260 nm/285 nm for o-, m-xylene and ex/em 265 nm/290 nm for p-xylene at the same concentration. The theoretical excitation/emission wavelengths were at ex/em 247 nm/267 nm, 248 nm/269 nm and 251 nm/307 nm for o-, m- and p-xylene, respectively. The vertical excitation and emission state energies of p-xylene (ex/em 4.94 eV/4.03 eV) were lower and the internal conversion energy difference (0.90 eV) was higher than those of m-xylene (ex/em 5.00 eV/4.60 eV) (0.4 eV) and o-xylene (ex/em 5.02 eV/4.64 eV) (0.377 eV). The order of theoretical emission and oscillator strength (0.0187 > 0.0175 > 0.0339) for p-xylene > o-xylene > m-xylene was observed to be in agreement with the experimental fluorescence intensities. These findings provide a novel fast method to distinguish isomers based on their photophysical properties.

Abstract
An experimental and theoretical study of the UV spectrum of chlorothalonil (CT) was carried out and the vibrationally resolved HOMO→LUMO transition is presented for the first time. The fluorescence spectrum has also been recorded. Furthermore, preparative photolysis allowed a detailed study of the photoproducts formed with recognition of different isomers. In the presence of oxygen only the first reductive dechlorination-decyanation occurred, while in its absence a successive dechlorination-decyanation takes place.

Abstract
Porous Si/eumelanin hybrids are a novel class of organic-inorganic hybrid materials that hold considerable promise for photovoltaic applications. Current progress toward device setup is, however, hindered by photocurrent stability issues, which require a detailed understanding of the mechanisms underlying the buildup and consolidation of the eumelanin-silicon interface. Herein we report an integrated experimental and computational study aimed at probing interface stability via surface modification and eumelanin manipulation, and at modeling the organic-inorganic interface via formation of a 5,6-dihydroxyindole (DHI) tetramer and its adhesion to silicon. The results indicated that mild silicon oxidation increases photocurrent stability via enhancement of the DHI-surface interaction, and that higher oxidation states in DHI oligomers create more favorable conditions for the efficient adhesion of growing eumelanin.
