Abstract
CONTEXT Looking for novel outstanding performance materials suitable for organic solar cells, we constructed a range of non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) evolved from the recently synthesized acceptor molecule identified as DICTIF, structured around fluorene core where 2-(2,3-dihydro-3-oxo-1H-inden-1-ylidene) propanedinitrile presented the terminals end-groups. Employing density functional theory (DFT) and time dependent-DFT (TD-DFT) simulations, we have simulated the impact of altering the end groups of DICTIF molecule by five assorted acceptors molecules, for the purpose of exploring their opto-electronic properties and their performance in organic solar cell (OSC) applications. We proved that the designed non-fullerene acceptors provide enhanced efficiency compared to the synthesized molecule, such as planar geometries and narrower energy gap ranging from 1.51 to 1.95 eV. A red shift in absorption was observed for all tailored molecules (λmax = 583.5-711.4 nm) as compared to the reference molecule (λmax = 578 nm).Various decisive factors such as frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs), exciton binding energy (EB), absorption maximum (λmax), open circuit voltage (VOC), reorganization energies (RE), transition density matrix (TDM), reduced density gradient (RDG), and electron-hole overlap have also been computed for analyzing the performance of NFAs. Low reorganizational energy values facilitate charge mobility which improves the conductivity of all the designed molecules. This study showed that our novel tailored molecules might be suitable candidates for the fabrication of highly efficient photovoltaic materials. METHODS After testing various hybrid functionals, optimized geometries were assigned using DFT HSEH1PBE/6-31G(d) level of theory. Electronic excitations and absorption spectra were investigated using the TD-DFT MPW1PW91/6-31G(d) level of theory. We ascertained that HSEH1PBE/6-31G(d) level of theory yield the closest calculated highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels of the DICTIF to the corresponding experimental ones and that TD-MPW1PW91//6-31G(d) was the most suitable level of theory for exploring electronic excitations and finding the maximum of absorption (λmax).

Abstract
Establishing the structure of porphyrins with a A-π-D-π-A configuration is one of the effective strategies to maintain their dominance and compensate shortcomings through flexible changes in fragments. In this regard, π-bridges have attracted wide attention as a parameter affecting molecular backbones, electron transfer, energy levels, absorption, and other properties. However, the essence and influence of π-bridges have not yet been confirmed. In order to satisfy the requirements of intelligent application in molecular design, this study aimed to investigate the control effect of differences in π-bridge composition (thiophene and selenophene) and connection type (single bonds, ethylenic bonds and fused) on photoelectric performance. Y6 and PC61BM were used as acceptors to build donor/acceptor (D/A) interfaces and characterize the film morphology in three dimensions. Results showed that the essence of π-bridges involves a strong bridging effect (adjusting ability) between A and D fragments rather than highlighting its own nature. The large value could obtain high open circuit voltages (VOC), large separation and small recombination rates as well as stable and tight morphology. Therefore, adjusting ability is a unified descriptor for evaluating π-bridges, and it is an effective strategy to adjust material properties and morphology. This insight and discovery may provide a new evaluation descriptor for the screening and design of π-bridges.

Abstract
In this work, five novel A-π-D-π-A type molecules D1-D5 were designed by adding unusual benzothiadiazole derivatives as π-spacer blocks to the efficient reference molecule DRCN5T for application as donor materials in organic solar cells (OSCs). Based on a density functional theory approach, a comprehensive theoretical study was performed with different functionals (B3LYP, B3LYP-GD3, B3LYP-GD3BJ, CAM-B3LYP, M06, M062X, and wB97XD) and with different solvent types (PCM and SMD) at the extended basis set 6-311+g(d,p) to evaluate the structural, optoelectronic, and intramolecular charge transfer properties of these molecules. The B3LYP-GD3BJ hybrid functional was used to optimize the studied molecules in CHCl3 solution with the SMD model solvent as it provided the best results compared to experimental data. Transition density matrix maps were simulated to examine the hole-electron localization and the electronic excitation processes in the excited state, and photovoltaic parameters including open-circuit photovoltage and fill factor were investigated to predict the efficiency of these materials. All the designed materials showed promising optoelectronic and photovoltaic characteristics, and for most of them, a red shift. Out of the proposed molecules, [1,2,5]thiadiazolo[3,4-d]pyridazine was selected as a promising π-spacer block to evaluate its interaction with PC61BM in a composite to understand the charge transfer between the donor and acceptor subparts. Overall, this study showed that adding π-spacer building blocks to the molecular structure is undoubtedly a potential strategy to further enhance the performance of donor materials for OSC applications.

Abstract
In order to compare the main difference of two diimide derivatives on the modulation of electronic and optical properties of P3HT-based organic solar cell, the density functional theory and molecular dynamics simulations were implemented to achieve elementary data on geometrical structure, molecular orbital, open-circuit voltage, absorption spectra, energetic driving force, and interface parameter of P3HT/D1 and P3HT/D2 systems. According to the investigation, P3HT/D1 system not only exhibits higher open circuit voltage and enough energetic driving force than P3HT/D2 system, but also possesses low-lying LUMO +1 orbital which can favor the exciton separation efficiency. Moreover, on the basis of some typical interface models choose from MD simulation, the estimation of the interface rate manifests that the P3HT/D1 interface possesses the smaller charge recombination rates and larger charge separation rates than those of the P3HT/D2 interface. It is expect that this work can provide certain guidelines for the further develop the performance of organic solar cell. We hope this work can further study on non-fullerene acceptor materials as a certain guides.

Abstract
To boost organic solar cell (OSC) performance, numerous approaches have been developed, such as synthesizing new materials, using post-annealing (thermal or solvent annealing) or fabricating ternary devices. The ternary strategy is usually used as an uncomplicated and effective way, but how to choose the third component and the effect of interactions between materials on OSC performance still need to be clarified. Herein, we proposed a new finding that the carbonyl group of 3,9-bis(2-methylene-(3-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-indanone))-5,5,11,11-tetrakis(4-hexylphenyl)-dithieno[2,3-d:2',3'-d']-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b'] dithiophene (ITIC) end groups can react with the dye molecule SR197 to form the N-H···O noncovalent interaction. The existence of intermolecular hydrogen bonds was confirmed using Fourier transform infrared spectra and two-dimensional proton nuclear magnetic resonance. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) was improved to 10.29% via doping SR197 into blends of PTB7-Th:ITIC, which exhibited a huge enhancement of approximately 30% compared with the binary OSCs (PCE = 7.92%). The ternary OSCs of PBDB-T:SR197:ITIC could also achieve high PCE (11.03%) without post-thermal or solvent annealing. Transmission electron microscopy and grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering showed the optimized morphology and enhanced crystallinity of ternary systems, which is facilitated to exciton dissociation and charge transmission. These conclusions mean that the H-bonding strategy is an effective way for selecting the third component and could achieve high-performance OSCs.

Abstract
The development of non-fullerene small molecule as electron acceptors is critical for overcoming the shortcomings of fullerene and its derivatives (such as limited absorption of light, poor morphological stability and high cost). We investigated the electronic and optical properties of the two selected promising non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs), IDIC and IDTBR, and five conjugated donor polymers using quantum-chemical method (QM). Based on the optimized structures of the studied NFAs and the polymers, the ten donor/acceptor (D/A) interfaces were constructed and investigated using QM and Marcus semi-classical model. Firstly, for the two NFAs, IDTBR displays better electron transport capability, better optical absorption ability, and much greater electron mobility than IDIC. Secondly, the configurations of D/A yield the more bathochromic-shifted and broader sunlight absorption spectra than the single moiety. Surprisingly, although IDTBR has better optical properties than IDIC, the IDIC-based interfaces possess better electron injection abilities, optical absorption properties, smaller exciton binding energies and more effective electronic separation than the IDTBR-based interfaces. Finally, all the polymer/IDIC interfaces exhibit large charge separation rate (KCS) (up to 1012⁻1014 s-1) and low charge recombination rate (KCR) (<10⁶ s-1), which are more likely to result in high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). From above analysis, it was found that the polymer/IDIC interfaces should display better performance in the utility of bulk-heterojunction solar cells (BHJ OSC) than polymer/IDTBR interfaces.

Abstract
A series of polymer donor materials 1-5 based on diketopyrrolopyrrole and thiophene unit which have been widely used in organic solar cells (OSCs) were investigated based on quantum chemical calculations. The effect of fluorine and cyano substitutions in polymer donor materials was focused on. Based on the investigation on electronic structures and optical properties of the reported molecules 1 and 2 and the analysis on some parameters relevant to charge dissociation ability at donor/acceptor interface constituted by 1 and 2 with PC61BM such as intermolecular charge transfer and recombination, driving force and Coulombic bound energy, we explained why fluorine substitution can improve OPV efficiency through strengthening eletron-withdrawing ability from a theoretical perspective. Then we designed cyano-substituted polymers 3-5 with the aim of obtaining better photovoltaic donor materials. The results reveal that our attempt to design donor materials which can balance large open-circuit voltage (Voc) and high short-circuit current (Jsc) in OSCs has worked out. It is worth noting that the substitutions of fluorine and cyano groups synergistically reduce energy gap and HOMO energy level of polymers 3 and 4. Moreover, 3/PC61BM and 4/PC61BM heterojunctions show over 107 and 104 times higher than 1/PC61BM on the ratios of intermolecular charge transfer and recombination rates (kinter-CT/kinter-CR). Thus, our work here may provide an efficient strategy to design promising donor materials in OPVs and we hope it could be useful in the future experimental synthesis.

Abstract
Small push-pull molecules attract much attention as prospective donor materials for organic solar cells (OSCs). By chemical engineering, it is possible to combine a number of attractive properties such as broad absorption, efficient charge separation, and vacuum and solution processabilities in a single molecule. Here we report the synthesis and early time photophysics of such a molecule, TPA-2T-DCV-Me, based on the triphenylamine (TPA) donor core and dicyanovinyl (DCV) acceptor end group connected by a thiophene bridge. Using time-resolved photoinduced absorption and photoluminescence, we demonstrate that in blends with [70]PCBM the molecule works both as an electron donor and hole acceptor, thereby allowing for two independent channels of charge generation. The charge-generation process is followed by the recombination of interfacial charge transfer states that takes place on the subnanosecond time scale as revealed by time-resolved photoluminescence and nongeminate recombination as follows from the OSC performance. Our findings demonstrate the potential of TPA-DCV-based molecules as donor materials for both solution-processed and vacuum-deposited OSCs.

J Mol Model 2017; 23:28. Abstract
The upper efficiency of heterojunction organic photovoltaics depends on the increased open-circuit voltage (V oc) and short-circuit current (J sc). So, a higher lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) level is necessary for organic acceptor material to possess higher V oc and more photons absorbsorption in the solar spectrum is needed for larger J sc. In this article, we theoretically designed some small molecule acceptors (2∼5) based on fluorene (F), benzothiadiazole, and cyano group (CN) referring to the reported acceptor material 2-[{7-(9,9-di-n-propyl-9H-fluoren-2-yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazol-4-yl}methylene]malononitrile (1), the crucial parameters affecting photoelectrical properties of compounds 2∼5 were evaluated by the density functional theory (DFT) and time dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) methods. The results reveal that compared with 1, 3 and 4 could have the better complementary absorption spectra with P3HT, the increased LUMO level, the improved V oc, and the decreased electronic organization energy (λ e). From the simulation of transition density matrix, it is very clear that the excitons of molecules 3 and 4 are easier to separate in the material surface. Therefore, 3 and 4 may become potential acceptor candidates for organic photovoltaic cells. In addition, with the increased number of CN, the optoelectronic properties of the molecules show a regular change, mainly improve the LUMO level, energy gap, V oc, and absorption intensity. In summary, reasonably adjusting CN can effectively improve the photovoltaic properties of small molecule acceptors. Graphical Abstract Structure-property relationship of small molecule acceptors could be rationally evaluated in the article. The changes of conjugate length and CN are important strategies to alter the photovoltaic properties of small molecule acceptors. Therefore, taking the K12/1 as a reference, we have theoretically designed a series of small molecule acceptors (2-4). The calculated results by means of DFT and TDDFT manifest that molecules 3 and 4 have the better complementary absorption spectra with P3HT, the increased LUMO level, the improved V oc, the decreased electronic organization energy and the easier separation in the material surface than 1. In summary, reasonably increasing conjugate length and decreasing CN can effectively improve the PCE, which will provide a theoretical guideline for the design and synthesis of new small molecule acceptors.

Wang D, Geng Z. Design and characteration of planar star-shaped oligomer electron donors for organic solar cells: a DFT study. CAN J CHEM 2015. Abstract
To seek high-performance oligomer donor materials used in organic solar cells, four star-shaped molecules with a planar donor core derived from the recent reported molecule 3T-P-DPP (phenyl-1,3,5-trithienyl-diketopyrrolopyrrole) were designed. The molecular properties affecting the cell performance, such as structural characteristics, frontier molecular orbital energy level, absorption spectra, exciton character, and charge transfer/transport, were investigated by means of the density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory methods. Comparative analysis showed that the new designed molecule 3 with a TTT (2,4,6-tri(thiophen-2-yl)-1,3,5-triazine) core has better planarity, a lower HOMO energy level, and a higher absorption efficiency, as well as more favorable exciton dissociation and charge transfer than the others, potentially improving the open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current density. Consequently, 3 maybe superior to 3T-P-DPP and may act as a promising donor material candidate for organic solar cells.
