Synthesis of Macrolactams from Macrolactones Using Ru-/Ir-Catalytic System under Neutral Conditions

Herein, we report the Ru-/Ir-catalyzed synthesis of valuable macrolactams from macrolactones and esters. The ring-opening of the macrolactones was efficaciously facilitated by the Ru catalyst to generate 32 amides in the first step. In the second step, intramolecular N-alkylative ring closure of amides with alcohols was succeeded by Ir catalyst to provide a series of 22 macrolactams and gave water as a byproduct. Moreover, this approach proceeded under neutral conditions and avoided the use of external additives.

Tandem imine formation via auto-hydrogen transfer from alcohols to nitro compounds catalyzed by a nanomagnetically recyclable copper catalyst under solvent-free conditions

A direct imination reaction was developed by tandem reaction of alcohols and nitro compounds in the presence of Cu-isatin Schiff base-γ-Fe₂O₃ as a nanomagnetically recyclable catalyst under solvent-free conditions. By this method, various imines were prepared in good to high yields from one-pot reaction of various alcohols (primary aromatic and aliphatic) and nitro compounds (aromatic and aliphatic) via an auto-hydrogen transfer reaction. Use of an inexpensive and easily reusable catalyst, without requiring any additives or excess amounts of benzyl alcohol as the reaction solvent are the other advantages of this method. This catalytic system has the merits of cost effectiveness, environmental benignity, excellent recyclability and good reproducibility.

Iridium Complex-Catalyzed C2-Extension of Primary Alcohols with Ethanol via a Hydrogen Autotransfer Reaction

The development of a C2-extension of primary alcohols with ethanol as the C2 source and catalysis by [Cp*IrCl₂]₂ (where Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadiene) is described. This new extension system was used for a range of benzylic alcohol substrates and for aliphatic alcohols with ethanol as an alkyl reagent to generate the corresponding C2-extended linear alcohols. Mechanistic studies of the reaction by means of intermediates and deuterium labeling experiments suggest the reaction is based on hydrogen autotransfer.

Asymmetric Induction with a Chiral Amine Catalyzed by a Ru-PNP Pincer Complex: Insight from Theoretical Investigation

In this paper, the mechanism of asymmetric amination of a racemic alcohol with Ellman's sulfinamide and the origin of diastereoselectivity catalyzed by a Ru-PNP pincer complex were studied using density functional theory (DFT). The mechanism involves dehydrogenation of the racemic alcohol, C-N coupling, and hydrogen transfer from the catalyst to the in situ formed imine. The calculated results indicate that both the alcohol dehydrogenation and imine hydrogenation are stepwise. The hydride transfer from a Ru hydride complex to the imine is shown to be the chirality-determining step in the whole catalytic cycle. It was found that the diastereoselectivity mainly stems from the hydrogen bonding interactions between the oxygen atom of the sulfinyl moiety and the hydrogen atom of the NH group of the ligand.

Base free N-alkylation of anilines with ArCH2OH and transfer hydrogenation of aldehydes/ketones catalyzed by the complexes of η5-Cp*Ir(iii) with chalcogenated Schiff bases of anthracene-9-carbaldehyde

The condensation of anthracene-9-carbaldehyde with 2-(phenylthio/seleno)ethylamine results in Schiff bases [PhS(CH₂)₂C[double bond, length as m-dash]N-9-C₁₄H₉](L1) and [PhSe(CH₂)₂C[double bond, length as m-dash]N-9-C₁₄H₉] (L2). On their reaction with [(η⁵-Cp*)IrCl(μ-Cl)]₂ and CH₃COONa at 50 °C followed by treatment with NH₄PF₆, iridacycles, [(η⁵-Cp*)Ir(L-H)][PF₆] (1: L = L1; 2: L = L2), result. The same reaction in the absence of CH₃COONa gives complexes [(η⁵-Cp*)Ir(L)Cl][PF₆] (3-4) in which L = L1(3)/L2(4) ligates in a bidentate mode. The ligands and complexes were authenticated with HR-MS and NMR spectra [¹H, ¹³C{¹H} and ⁷⁷Se{¹H} (in the case of L2 and its complexes only)]. Single crystal structures of L2 and half sandwich complexes 1-4 were established with X-ray crystallography. Three coordination sites of Ir in each complex are covered with η⁵-Cp* and on the remaining three, donor atoms present are: N, S/Se and C^-/Cl^-, resulting in a piano-stool structure. The moisture and air insensitive 1-4 act as efficient catalysts under mild conditions for base free N-alkylation of amines with benzyl alcohols and transfer hydrogenation (TH) of aldehydes/ketones. The optimum loading of 1-4 as a catalyst is 0.1-0.5 mol% for both the activations. The best reaction temperature is 80 °C for transfer hydrogenation and 100 °C for N-alkylation. The mercury poisoning test supports a homogeneous pathway for both the reactions catalyzed by 1-4. The two catalytic processes are most efficient with 3 followed by 4 > 1 > 2. The mechanism proposed on the basis of HR-MS of the reaction mixtures of the two catalytic processes taken after 1-2 h involves the formation of an alkoxy and hydrido species. The real catalytic species proposed in the case of iridacycles results due to the loss of the Cp* ring.
