Abstract
In this study, a new palladium nanocatalyst was supported on l-threonine functionalized magnetic mesocellular silica foams (MMCF@Thr-Pd) and was characterized by FT-IR, XRD, BET, SEM, EDS, VSM, TGA, ICP-OES and elemental mapping techniques. The obtained MMCF@Thr-Pd performance can show excellent catalytic activity for Stille, Suzuki, and Heck coupling reactions, and the corresponding products were obtained with high yields. More importantly, the efficient and stable MMCF@Thr-Pd nanocatalyst was recovered by applying an external magnetic field and reused for at least five consecutive runs without a change in the catalytic activity.

Abstract
The Ullmann reaction has been reported to be the first cross-coupling reaction performed by using a transition metal catalyst. This reaction has been initially considered as the copper-catalyzed homocoupling of aryl halides, leading to the formation of symmetrical biaryl compounds via the generation of novel C-C bonds. Although this reaction has been extensively studied in recent decades and valuable results have been achieved, there are still considerable efforts focused on the development of novel catalytic systems, mild reaction conditions, and extended substrate scope. The mechanistic aspects of the Ullmann homocoupling reaction have also been investigated, as related to the introduction of new sustainable strategies and green procedures. The application of recyclable heterogeneous catalysts has been found to overcome most of the limitations associated with the harsh reaction conditions of the original Ullmann reaction. More recently, copper-based catalytic systems have also been replaced by palladium nanoparticles, ionic palladium species, gold nanoparticles, and palladium-gold bimetallic systems. In this review, current results reported on the Ullmann homocoupling reaction are discussed, with an emphasis on the development of novel catalytic systems, which can be efficiently used under heterogeneous conditions.

Abstract
The possibility to tune the solid catalyst morphology and the unique chemical and physical stability of organosilica-entrapped sol-gel catalysts allow the application of these catalysts to the synthesis of a wide variety of valued molecules, including polymers, manufactured by the fine-chemical industry. Referring to selected independent research achievements, we provide a practice oriented insight on these materials that will hopefully be useful in new, unified catalysis education aimed to foster the uptake of heterogeneous catalysis in the fine and specialty chemical industry.

Abstract
Despite the inherent sustainability direct arylation polymerization (DArP) offers through a C-H activation pathway, the use of expensive homogeneous Pd catalysts remains problematic for large-scale conjugated polymer (CP) synthesis. Herein, the first report on the recycling of heterogeneous catalysts for CP synthesis using DArP is presented. We found SiliaCat Pd-DPP to be a highly efficient and recyclable catalyst for multi-batch CP synthesis providing CPs with molecular weights (Mn) up to 82 kg/mol even after being recycled three times. Batch-to-batch variations were further optimized to afford up to five batches of polymers with a Mn of 25 ± 2.5 kg/mol without structural disparity. Significantly, this work discloses among the most sustainable CP synthesis protocols to date and presents the critical concept of catalyst-recycling to the important field of organic semiconducting polymers, which potentially enables access to truly low-cost flow chemistry for industrial-scale CP synthesis.

Abstract
The reaction of [PdCl2(CH3CN)2] and bis-4,4′-(RfCH2OCH2)-2,2′-bpy (1a–d), where Rf = n-C11F23 (a), n-C10F21 (b), n-C9F19 (c) and n-C8F17 (d), respectively, in the presence of dichloromethane (CH2Cl2) resulted in the synthesis of Pd complex, [PdCl2[4,4′-bis-(RfCH2OCH2)-2,2′-bpy] (2a–d). The Pd-catalyzed Stille arylations of vinyl tributyltin with aryl halides were selected to demonstrate the feasibility of recycling usage with 2a as the catalyst using NMP (N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone) as the solvent at 120–150 °C. Additionally, recycling and electronic effect studies of 2a–c were also carried out for Suzuki-Miyaura reaction of phenylboronic acid derivatives, 4-X-C6H4-B(OH)2, (X = H or Ph) with aryl halide, 4-Y-C6H4-Z, (Y = CN, H or OCH3; Z = I or Br) in dimethylformamide (DMF) at 135–150 °C. At the end of each cycle, the product mixtures were cooled to lower temperature (e.g., −10 °C), and then catalysts were recovered by decantation with Pd leaching less than 1%. The products were quantified by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis or by the isolated yield. The complex 2a-catalyzed Stille reaction of aryl iodides with vinyl tributyltin have good recycling results for a total of 8 times, with a high yield within short period of time (1–3 h). Similarly, 2a–c-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura reactions also have good recycling results. The electronic effect studies from substituents in both Stille and Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reactions showed that electron withdrawing groups speed up the reaction rate. To our knowledge, this is the first example of recoverable fluorous long-chained Pd-catalyzed Stille reactions under the thermomorphic mode.

Abstract
Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are recognized as two-dimensional (2D) clay materials, which comprise the interlayer anions and host layers with a positive charge (brucite-like M(OH)6 octahedral). They have been used as effective and eco-friendly heterogeneous catalytic systems in cross-coupling reactions. In this review, we try to underscore the applications of (LDHs) as an efficient and green catalyst in some important name reactions, namely Suzuki, Heck, Sonogashira, and Ullmann cross-coupling reactions leading to carbon-carbon bond formations.

Abstract
Direct (hetero)arylation (DHA) is playing a key role in improving the efficiency and atom economy of C-C cross coupling reactions, so has impacts in pharmaceutical and materials chemistry. Current research focuses on further improving the generality, efficiency and selectivity of the method through careful tuning of the reaction conditions and the catalytic system. Comparatively fewer studies are dedicated to the replacement of the high-boiling-point organic solvents dominating the field and affecting the overall sustainability of the method. We show herein that the use of a 9:1 v/v emulsion of an aqueous Kolliphor 2 wt% solution while having toluene as the reaction medium enables the preparation of relevant examples of thiophene-containing π-conjugated building blocks in high yield and purity.

Abstract
Herein we report on the synthesis of an N-annulated perylene diimide (PDI) disubstituted thieno[3,4-c]pyrrole-4,6-dione (TPD) molecular acceptor (PDI–TPD–PDI) by direct heteroarylation (DHA) methods. Three sets of DHA conditions that explore the effects of solvent, temperature, and catalyst were employed to find the optimal conditions for the synthesis of two PDI–TPD–PDI derivatives. We then selected one PDI–TPD–PDI for use as a non-fullerene acceptor in organic solar cell devices with the donor polymer PBDB-T. Active layer bulk-heterojunction blends were modified using several post-deposition treatments, including thermal annealing, solvent vapour annealing, and high boiling solvent additives. It was found that active layers cast from o-dichlorobenzene with a 3% v/v diphenylether additive yielded films with adequate phase separation, and subsequently gave the best organic solar cell performance, with power conversion efficiencies greater than 3%.

Abstract
Synthetic access to new push-pull molecules based on 3-cyano-4-hexyloxythiophene and triphenylamine moieties is presented herein using a clean methodology. The key step involves a direct heteroarylation coupling reaction in the presence of a homogeneous or heterogeneous [Pd] catalyst followed by Knoevenagel condensation performed in ethanol as a solvent. Structure-electronic property relationships of the new molecular materials are discussed and then their use as donors in bilayer planar heterojunction solar cells is investigated.

Abstract
A water-soluble PdCl₂(NH₃)₂/cationic 2,2'-bipyridyl system was found to be a highly efficient catalyst for Stille coupling of aryl iodides and bromides with organostannanes. The coupling reaction was conducted at 110 °C in water, under aerobic conditions, in the presence of NaHCO₃ as a base to afford corresponding Stille coupling products in good to high yields. When aryltributylstannanes were employed, the reactions proceeded smoothly under a very low catalyst loading (as little as 0.0001 mol %). After simple extraction, the residual aqueous phase could be reused in subsequent runs, making this Stille coupling economical. In the case of tetramethylstannane, however, a greater catalyst loading (1 mol %) and the use of tetraethylammonium iodide as a phase-transfer agent were required in order to obtain satisfactory yields.

Abstract
This feature article examines the potential of heterogeneous Pd species to mediate catalytic C-H bond functionalisation processes employing suitable substrates (e.g. aromatic/heteroaromatic compounds). A focus is placed on the reactivity of supported and non-supported Pd nanoparticle (PdNPs) catalysts, in addition to the re-appropriation of well-established heterogeneous Pd catalysts such as Pd/C. Where possible, reasonable comparisons are made between PdNPs and traditional 'homogeneous' Pd precatalyst sources (which form PdNPs). The involvement of higher order Pd species in traditional cross-coupling processes, such as Mizoroki-Heck, Sonogashira and Suzuki-Miyaura reactions, allows the exemplification of potential future topics for study in the area of catalytic C-H bond functionalisation processes.
