Abstract
In recent years, the field of Supramolecular Chemistry has witnessed tremendous progress owing to the development of versatile optical sensors for the detection of harmful biological analytes. Nitrobenzoxadiazole (NBD) is one such scaffold that has been exploited as fluorescent probes for selective recognition of harmful analytes and their optical imaging in various cell lines including HeLa, PC3, A549, SMMC-7721, MDA-MB-231, HepG2, MFC-7, etc. The NBD-derived molecular probes are majorly synthesized from the chloro derivative of NBD via nucleophilic aromatic substitution. This general NBD moiety ligation method to nucleophiles has been leveraged to develop various derivatives for sensing analytes. NBD-derived probes are extensively used as optical sensors because of remarkable properties like excellent stability, large Stoke's shift, high efficiency and stability, visible excitation, easy use, low cost, and high quantum yield. This article reviewed NBD-based probes for the years 2017-2023 according to the sensing of analyte(s), including cations, anions, thiols, and small molecules like hydrogen sulfide. The sensing mechanism, designing of the probe, plausible binding mechanism, and biological application of chemosensors are summarized. The real-time application of optical sensors has been discussed by various methods, such as paper strips, molecular logic gates, smartphone detection, development of test kits, etc. This article will update the researchers with the in vivo and in vitro biological applicability of NBD-based molecular probes and challenges the research fraternity to design, propose, and develop better chemosensors in the future possessing commercial utility.

Abstract
In the quest of recognizing hazardous nitro-aromatic compounds in water, two pyridine-functionalized Schiff-base chemosensors, DMP ((E)-N-(3,4-dimethoxybenzylidene)(pyridin-2-yl)methanamine)) and MP (4-((E)-((pyridin-2-yl)methylimino)methyl)-2-ethoxyphenol) have been synthesized to detect mutagenic 2,4,6-Trinitrophenol (TNP) in soil, water as well as cellular matrices by producing turn-off emission responses as a combined consequence of PET and RET processes. Several experimental analyses including ESI-MS, FT-IR, photoluminescence, 1H NMR titration, and the theoretical calculations ascertained the formation and sensing efficacies of the chemosensors. The analytical substantiations revealed that structural variation of the chemosensors played a significant role in improving the sensing efficiency, which would certainly be worthwhile in developing small molecular TNP sensors. The present work depicted that the electron density within the MP framework was more than that of DMP due to the intentional incorporation of -OEt and -OH groups. As a result, MP represented a strong interaction mode towards the electron-deficient TNP with a detection limit of 39 μM.

Abstract
Fluorescent and colorimetric sensors are important tools for investigating the chemical compositions of different matrices, including foods, environmental samples, and water. The high sensitivity, low interference, and low detection limits of these sensors have inspired scientists to investigate this class of sensing molecules for ion and molecule detection. Several examples of fluorescent and colorimetric sensors have been described in the literature; this Review focuses particularly on phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazoles. Different strategies have been developed for obtaining phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazoles, which enable modification of their optical properties upon interaction with specific analytes. These sensing responses usually involve changes in the fluorescence intensity and/or color arising from processes like photoinduced electron transfer, intramolecular charge transfer, intramolecular proton transfer in the excited state, and Förster resonance energy transfer. In this Review, we categorized these sensors into two different groups: those bearing formyl groups and their derivatives and those based on other molecular groups. The different optical responses of phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole-based sensors upon interaction with specific analytes are discussed.

Abstract
In recent years, fluorescent sensors have emerged as attractive imaging probes due to their distinct responses toward bio-relevant metal ions. However, the bioimaging application main barrier is the 'turn-off' response toward paramagnetic metal ions such as Cu2+ under physiological conditions. Herein, we report a new sensor (2-methyl(4-bromo-N-ethylpiperazinyl-1,8-naphthalimido)-4-(1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole-2-yl) phenol)NPP with multifunctional (Naphthalimide, Piperazine, Phenanthroimidazole) units for fluorescent and colourimetric detection of Cu2+ in an aqueous medium. Both absorption and fluorescence spectral titration strategies were used to monitor the Cu2+-sensing property of NPP. The NPP displays a weak emission at ca. 455 nm, which remarkably enhances (⁓3.2-fold) upon selective binding of Cu2+ over a range of metal ions, including other paramagnetic metal ions (Mn2+, Fe3+, Co2+). The stoichiometry, binding constant (Ka) and the LOD (limit of detection) of NPP toward Cu2+ ions were found to be 1:1, 5.0 (± 0.2) × 104 M-1 and 6.5 (± 0.4) × 10-7 M, respectively. We have also used NPP as a fluorescent probe to detect Cu2+ in live (human cervical HeLa) cancer cells. The emission intensity of NPP was almost recovered in HeLa cells by incubating 'in situ' the derived Cu2+ complex (NPP-Cu2+) in the presence of a benchmark chelating agent such as EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetate). The fluorescent emission of NPP was reverted significantly in each cycle upon sequencial addition of Cu2+ and EDTA to the NPP solution. Overall, NPP is a novel, simple, economic and portable sensor that can detect Cu2+ in biological and environmental scenarios.

Abstract
A novel colorimetric sensor based on the TiO2/poly(acrylamide-co-methylene bis acrylamide-co-2-(3-(4-nitro-phenyl)thioureido)ethyl methacrylate) nanocomposite was synthesized via a surface modification strategy; methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane was used to provide reactive vinyl groups on the surface of TiO2 nanoparticles for the successful surface polymerization of Am (acrylamide), MBA (methylenbisacrylamide), and NPhM (2-(3-(4-nitrophenyl)thioureido)ethyl methacrylate) components. The successful preparation of nanocomposites was confirmed using Fourier transform infrared, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetry analysis, and X-ray diffraction methods, and the sensing ability of the probe toward fluoride ions was investigated using naked-eye detection and UV-vis measurement. The interaction of the prepared polymeric nanocomposite with fluoride ions elicited a significant visible change in color from pale yellow to orange and was further affirmed by a clean interconversion of the two absorption bands at 330 and 485 nm. The selective binding ability of the polymeric nanocomposite towards fluoride over other anions, such as I-, Cl-, Br-, AcO-, H2PO4 -, and H2SO4 - was further explored; the prepared chemosensor could detect fluoride ions in acetonitrile with a detection limit of 3 μM.

Abstract
Rapid and efficient analysis of fluoride ion is crucial to providing key information for fluoride ion hazard assessment and pollution management. In this study, we synthesized one symmetrical structure called 1,4-bis(4,5-diphenyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)benzene (1a) and two asymmetrical structures, namely 2-(4-(4,5-diphenyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)phenyl)-1H-phenanthro(9,10-d)imidazole (1b) and 2-(4-(4,5-diphenyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)phenyl)-1H-imidazo(4,5-f)(1,10)phenanthroline (1c), which served as an efficient anion sensor for fluoride ion over a wide range of other anions (Cl-, Br-, I-, NO₃-, ClO₄-, HSO₄-, BF₄-, and PF₆-) owing to imidazole group in the main backbone. The absorption intensity of compound 1a at λmax 358 nm slightly decreased; however, a new band at λmax 414 nm appeared upon the addition of fluoride ion, while no evident change occurred upon the addition of eight other anions. The photoluminescence intensity of compound 1a at λmax 426 nm was nearly quenched and fluorescence emission spectra were broadened when fluoride ion was added into dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solution of compound 1a. Compared with the optical behaviors of the DMSO solution of compound 1a in the presence of Bu₄N⁺F-, compounds 1b and 1c exhibited considerable sensitivity to fluoride ion due to the increase in coplanarity. Furthermore, compared with the fluorescence emission behaviors of the DMSO solutions of compounds 1a and 1b in the presence of Bu₄N⁺F-, compound 1c exhibited the most significant sensitivity to fluoride ion due to the charge transfer enhancement. Consequently, the detection limits of compounds 1a-1c increased from 5.47 × 10-6 M to 4.21 × 10-6 M to 9.12 × 10-7 M. Furthermore, the largest red shift (75 nm) of the DMSO solution compound 1c in the presence of fluoride ion can be observed. Our results suggest that the increase in coplanarity and the introduction of electron-withdrawing groups to the imidazole backbone can improve the performance in detecting fluoride ion.
