Abstract
We report state of the art electronic structure calculations RICC2 and XMCQDPT of BODIPY nonorthogonal dimers to understand the photophysical processes from the intramolecular singlet fission (iSF) perspective. We have calculated singlet, triplet and quintet states at the XMCQDPT(8,8)/cc-pVDZ level of theory and diabatic singlet states at the XMCQDPT(4,4)/cc-pVDZ level of theory. In all the systems studied, charge transfer states (1(CA) and 1(AC)) couple strongly with locally excited (1(S1S0)) and multiexcitonic (1(T1T1)) states. The rates of formation of the multiexcitonic state from the locally excited state are very low on account of large activation energy (E(1(T1T1)) - E(1(S1S0))). A relaxed scan along the torsional angle revealed contrasting results for axial and orthogonal conformers. We proposed a probable mechanism for contrasting photophysical properties of dimers B[3,3] and B[2,8]. We also found that substitution of CN, NH2 and BH2 at meso, β and α positions reduces the energy gap (ΔSF = 2E(T1) - E(S1)) significantly, making iSF a competing process in triplet state generation. Intrigued by the success of the CN group at the meso position in reducing the energy gap, we also studied the azaBODIPY monomer and its derivatives using the same methodology. The iSF is slightly endoergic with ΔSF ∼ 0.2 eV in these systems and iSF may play an important role in their photophysical responses.

Abstract
The dynamic processes present in ligand-benzylated formazanate boron and aluminium complexes are investigated using variable temperature NMR experiments and lineshape analyses. The observed difference in activation parameters for complexes containing either organic countercations (NBu4+) or alkali cations is rationalized on the basis of a different degree of ion-pairing in the ground state, and the data are in all cases consistent with a mechanism that involves pyramidal inversion at the nitrogens in the heterocyclic ring rather than homolytic N-C(benzyl) bond cleavage.

Abstract
Boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) fluorophore derivatives were prepared from a Pyrromethene scaffold and di-fluoroboron. To add to the range of biocompatible fluorophores, this report describes the synthesis and photophysical studies of carboxylate-functionalized BODIPY analogues from natural products, Tropolone and α-amino acids, through N,O-chelation. The structure of a few derivatives was confirmed by single crystal X-ray studies. UV/fluorescence studies revealed their fluorescence behaviors in organic solvents with a quantum yield of ∼0-15%, which varied based on the structure of amino acids. Further, electrochemical studies were accomplished by cyclic voltammetry, which confirm only one irreversible reduction reaction with Epc = -1.3 (V). Finally, their HOMO and LUMO molecular orbitals/energy differences were calculated from a theoretically (DFT) optimized structure, which also supported the role of amino group residues in the enhancement of the fluorescence. The glycinate derivative exhibited the greatest quantum yield compared to the other amino groups. Hence, 2-aminotropone containing BODIPY analogues are potential candidates for the development of various types of functionalized fluorophores as BODIPY analogues.

Abstract
![]()
The
synthesis of aluminum complexes with redox-active formazanate
ligands is described. Salt metathesis using AlCl3 was shown
to form a five-coordinate complex with two formazanate ligands, whereas
organometallic aluminum starting materials yield tetrahedral mono(formazanate)
aluminum compounds. The aluminum diphenyl derivative was successfully
converted to the iodide complex (formazanate)AlI2, and
a comparison of spectroscopic/structural data for these new complexes
is provided. Characterization by cyclic voltammetry is supplemented
by chemical reduction to demonstrate that ligand-based redox reactions
are accessible in these compounds. The possibility to obtain a formazanate
aluminum(I) carbenoid species by two-electron reduction was examined
by experimental and computational studies, which highlight the potential
impact of the nitrogen-rich formazanate ligand on the electronic structure
of compounds with this ligand. The synthesis of a series
of aluminum complexes with redox-active
formazanate ligands is described and crystallographic, spectroscopic,
and voltammetric characterization data are presented. The reduction
chemistry of these newly synthesized complexes has been explored and
the results are supported by a computational (DFT) study.

Abstract

The reactivity of
a boron complex with a redox-active formazanate ligand, LBPh2 [L = PhNNC(p-tol)NNPh], was studied. Two-electron
reduction of this main-group complex generates the stable, nucleophilic
dianion [LBPh2]2–, which reacts with
the electrophiles BnBr and H2O to form products that derive
from ligand benzylation and protonation, respectively. The resulting
complexes are anionic boron analogues of leucoverdazyls. N–C
and N–H bond homolysis of these compounds was studied by exchange
NMR spectroscopy and kinetic experiments. The weak N–C and
N–H bonds in these systems derive from the stability of the
resulting borataverdazyl radical, in which the unpaired electron is
delocalized over the four N atoms in the ligand backbone. We thus
demonstrate the ability of this system to take up two electrons and
an electrophile (E+ = Bn+, H+) in
a process that takes place on the organic ligand. In addition, we
show that the [2e–/E+] stored on the
ligand can be converted to E• radicals, reactivity
that has implications in energy storage applications such as hydrogen
evolution. A boron complex with a redox-active
formazanate ligand in its two-electron-reduced state is shown to react
with electrophiles (BnBr and H+). The resulting “borataleucoverdazyl”
products have weak N−C and N−H bonds; homolytic cleavage
reactions lead to stable ligand-based radicals. Thus, the accumulation
of [2e−/E+] on the formazanate ligand
and conversion to E• radicals are demonstrated,
and their potential relevance in energy-related electrocatalysis (e.g.,
proton reduction) is discussed.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of a new family of phosphine oxide supported aluminum formazanate complexes (7a,b, 8a, 9a) are reported. X-ray diffraction studies showed that the aluminum atoms in the complexes adopt an octahedral geometry in the solid state. The equatorial positions are occupied by an N2O23- formazanate ligand, and the axial positions are occupied by L-type phosphine oxide donors. UV-vis absorption spectroscopy revealed that the complexes were strongly absorbing (ε ≈ 30000 M-1 cm-1) between 500 and 700 nm. The absorption maxima in this region were simulated using time-dependent density functional theory. With the exception of 3-cyano-substituted complex 7b, which showed maximum luminescence intensity in the presence of excess phosphine oxide, the title complexes are nonemissive in solution and the solid state. The electrochemical properties of the complexes were probed using cyclic voltammetry. Each complex underwent sequential one-electron oxidations in potential ranges of -0.12 to 0.29 V and 0.62 to 0.97 V, relative to the ferrocene/ferrocenium redox couple. Electrochemical reduction events were observed at potentials between -1.34 and -1.75 V. In combination with tri-n-propylamine as a coreactant, complex 7b acted as an electrochemiluminescence emitter with a maximum electrochemiluminescence intensity at a wavelength of 735 nm, red-shifted relative to the photoluminescence maximum of the same compound.

Abstract
One new series of boron difluoride complexes 1 derived from heterocyclic benzoxazoles 2 was reported, and their mesomorphic and optical properties were also investigated. One single crystal of the mesogenic BF2 complex 1a (m = 12, n = 8) was obtained, and its single crystal and molecular structure were resolved. The geometry coordination at the central boron atom is tetrahedral. It crystallizes in a triclinic space group P1[combining macron] with Z = 4. The overall molecular shape was described as slightly bent Z-shapes, and the molecular length was ca. 34.06 Å. Weak intramolecular and intermolecular H-bonds observed in the crystal lattice were attributed to the formation of mesophases. The results indicated that benzoxazoles 2a (n = 6, 8, 12) formed monotropic SmA phases, while boron difluoride complexes 1a (n = 6, 8, 12, 16) exhibited monotropic SmC mesophases. In contrast, all compounds of 2b and 1b (m = 1, n = 12 for all) were not mesogenic. Boron complexes 1 emitted a pronounced violet emission at λmax = 399 nm in solution at room temperature.

Abstract
Although boron-based fluorophores incorporating nitrogenous chelating ligands have received much attention, there has been little work on examples of boron-salphen and azine derivatives. In this report, we present several π expanded boron salphen type complexes, incorporating both bis(2-hydroxynaphthaldehyde)azine as well as ortho, meta and para variants of the analogous 2-hydroxynaphthaldehyde salphen compounds. For the azine, we observed only the formation of a single BF2 adduct, while for the naphth-phen compounds dimeric BF2 binding was observed. All new compounds were fully characterized via X-ray diffraction, and both DFT and TDDFT studies were carried out to probe the electronic structures of these fluorophores.

Abstract
Oxazinium derivatives have recently played an important role in bioanalysis attributing to the distinguished properties, thus a detailed study of the structure-property relationship is especially significant. Herein, pH-sensitive optical properties of Nile Blue (1a), N-monoalkyl-Nile Blue (1b) and Azure A (1c) have been carried out in extreme acid and base conditions. Dyes 1a and 1c showed colorimetric changes by the protonation of nitrogen atom in strong acidic condition (pH < 2.0), and dyes 1a - c exhibited colorimetric changes by equilibrium between amino and imide groups in very strong basic case (pH > 7.6). Besides, their fluorescent properties were closed to ON - OFF and OFF - ON emissions at 640-820 nm under strong acidic and basic conditions. Moreover, the absorption and emission properties were reversible, and there were no remarkable optical intensity changes of dyes 1a - c under subacidic and neutral solutions (pH = 3.0-7.0). The (TD) DFT calculations were used to optimize the most stable structures of their corresponding protonated and deprotonated forms, and their absorption and emission properties were also explained. Their fluorescent properties nearly ON-OFF and OFF - ON in strong acidic and basic conditions at near-infrared region will give the possible application in pH detection for extreme conditions.
