Abstract
The release of industrial dyes into the environment has recently increased, resulting in harmful effects on people and ecosystems. In recent years, the use of adsorbents in photocatalytic nanocomposites has attracted significant interest due to their low cost, efficiency, and eco-friendly physical and chemical characteristics. Herein, Acid Orange 7 (AO7) removal was investigated by photocatalytic degradation using Rice Rusk Biochar (RHB), Tin (IV) Oxide (SnO2), and Iron Oxide (Fe3O4) as heterogeneous nanocomposite. After the preparation of RHB, the nanocomposite was synthesized and characterized using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM), X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR). To optimize the elimination of AO7 by the One-Factor-At-a-Time (OFAT) method, effective parameters including mixing ratio (RHB:SnO2:Fe3O4), dye concentration, solution pH, and nanocomposite dose were studied. The results showed that the removal efficiency of AO7 after 120 min under the optimal mixing ratio of 1:1.5:0.6, dye concentration of 75 mg/l, solution pH of 4, and nanocomposite dose of 0.7 g/l was 92.37%. Moreover, Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Total Organic Carbon (TOC) removal rates were obtained at 82.22 and 72.22%, respectively. The Average Oxidation State (AOS) and Carbon Oxidation State (COS) of the AO7 solution were increased after the process, indicating biodegradability improvement. Various scavenger effects were studied under optimal conditions, and the results revealed that O2- and H+ reactive species play a crucial role in the photocatalytic degradation of AO7. The reusability and stability of nanocomposite were tested in several consecutive experiments, and the degradation efficiency was reduced from 92 to 79% after five consecutive cycles. It is expected that this research contributes significantly to the utilization of agricultural waste in photocatalytic nanocomposites for the degradation of environmental pollutants.

Abstract
Water is the most important life-giving resource on earth. Nowadays, intensive growth of the world population has resulted in increased water consumption and the production of wastewater. Additionally, the presence of pharmaceuticals in treated conventional wastewater or even in the environment is strictly indicating that present techniques of wastewater treatment are not efficient enough and are not designed to remove such pollutants. Scarce water resources in the world are the main driving force for the innovation of novel techniques of water and wastewater treatment. Photocatalysis, as one of the advanced oxidation processes, enables the transformation of recalcitrant and toxic pollutants into CO2, water, and inorganic salts. In the present paper, the photocatalytic oxidation of β-blockers-metoprolol and propranolol-are described. For photocatalytic oxidation, novel TiO2 photocatalysts modified with biochar were used. Photocatalysts were prepared by sol-gel method and the effect of photocatalysts type, presence of inorganic ions, dissolved organic matter, and different water matrix was established. The results indicate that using only the decrease in the tested pollutant concentration is not effective enough in establishing the treatment method's safety. There is a need to use additional testing such as ecotoxicity tests; however, the key parameter is the properly chosen tested organism.

Photocatalytic Activity of the V 2O 5 Catalyst toward Selected Pharmaceuticals and Their Mixture: Influence of the Molecular Structure on the Efficiency of the Process. Molecules 2023; 28:molecules28020655. Abstract
Due to the inability of conventional wastewater treatment procedures to remove organic pharmaceutical pollutants, active pharmaceutical components remain in wastewater and even reach tap water. In terms of pharmaceutical pollutants, the scientific community focuses on β-blockers due to their extensive (over)usage and moderately high solubility. In this study, the photocatalytic activity of V2O5 was investigated through the degradation of nadolol (NAD), pindolol (PIN), metoprolol (MET), and their mixture under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation in water. For the preparation of V2O5, facile hydrothermal synthesis was used. The structural, morphological, and surface properties and purity of synthesized V2O5 powder were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray, and Raman spectroscopy. SEM micrographs showed hexagonal-shaped platelets with well-defined morphology of materials with diameters in the range of 10−65 µm and thickness of around a few microns. X-ray diffraction identified only one crystalline phase in the sample. The Raman scattering measurements taken on the catalyst confirmed the result of XRPD. Degradation kinetics were monitored by ultra-fast liquid chromatography with diode array detection. The results showed that in individual solutions, photocatalytic degradation of MET and NAD was relatively insignificant (<10%). However, in the PIN case, the degradation was significant (64%). In the mixture, the photodegradation efficiency of MET and NAD slightly increased (15% and 13%). Conversely, it reduced the PIN to the still satisfactory value of 40%. Computational analysis based on molecular and periodic density functional theory calculations was used to complement our experimental findings. Calculations of the average local ionization energy indicate that the PIN is the most reactive of all three considered molecules in terms of removing an electron from it.

Abstract
The C-C coupling reactions of aliphatic alcohols to aromatics and larger-mass compounds have large endothermicities and activation energies, calling for catalysts operating at high temperatures. Here, we demonstrate that plasmon-excited nanoparticles catalyze the C-C coupling of aliphatic alcohols at room temperature to produce polyaromatic hydrocarbons and graphene oxide. The conversion is quenched by radical and electron scavengers and by the surface passivation of metals, suggesting that the reaction proceeds through alkoxy, peroxyl, hydroxyalkyl, and alkyl radical intermediates created by the metal to molecule transfer of plasmonic hot carriers. Besides being the first realization of C-C coupling of aliphatic alcohols at room temperature, the result constitutes a rare example of an endothermic plasmon-induced reaction producing new bonds and a new method for photogenerating graphene derivatives. More importantly, the result demonstrates the facile generation of organic radicals directly from alcohols, which may be used as precursors for radical-based organic reactions.

Abstract
The atomic and molecular properties of the title compounds were calculated by Jaguar using a basis set B3LYP/6-31G**++ with hybrid DFT in the gas phase, to determine the chemical reactivity. Analysis of quantum chemical features such as HOMO and LUMO explained that the electronic charge transfer occurred within the system through conjugated paths of the selected compounds. The nucleophilic and electrophilic reactive sites are recognized from the molecular electrostatic potential plot. Electrophilic and nucleophilic attack-prone molecular sites were predicted by mapping ALIE value to the molecular surface. The bond dissociation energy of the high active compound 15 (2-chloro-N-(2-(2-(2-(2-chlorobenzoyl)hydrazineyl)-2-oxoethoxy)phenyl)acetamide) was calculated to assess the probability of compound autoxidation or degradation. Further, molecular docking, binding free energy calculations, and ADMET profile of the degradation products (DPs) of compound 15 was carried out to determine the binding affinity and toxicity profile of the formed DPs compared with the parent compound. A 150-ns molecular dynamics (MD) simulation was performed to evaluate the binding stability of the compound 15/4URL complex using Desmond. Binding free energy and binding affinity of the complex were computed for 100 trajectory frames using the MM-GBSA approach.

Abstract
Pharmaceuticals are found in waterbodies worldwide. Conventional sewage treatment plants are often not able to eliminate these micropollutants. Hence, Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) have been heavily investigated. Here, metoprolol is exposed to UV irradiation, hydrogen peroxide, and ozonation. Degradation was analyzed using chemical kinetics both for initial and secondary products. Photo-induced irradiation enhanced by hydrogen peroxide addition accelerated degradation more than ozonation, leading to complete elimination. Degradation and transformation products were identified by high-performance liquid-chromatography coupled to high-resolution higher-order mass spectrometry. The proposed structures allowed to apply Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR) analysis to predict ecotoxicity. Degradation products were generally associated with a lower ecotoxicological hazard to the aquatic environment according to OECD QSAR toolbox and VEGA. Comparison of potential structural isomers suggested forecasts may become more reliable with larger databases in the future.

Abstract
The hydrogen peroxide role in photocatalytic degradation of an anionic azo dye, Acid Orange 7 (AO7), was investigated in a slurry reactor. Commercial ZnO nanoparticles with an average size between 10 to 30 nm were used as catalysts. Optimum conditions for different parameters, including dye concentration (10-100 mg/L), catalyst concentration (0.1-0.5 g/L), and pH (5-10), were determined first in the absence of H2O2. Changes in the COD were measured for the optimum condition. The impact of adding hydrogen peroxide at different concentrations to the system operating at optimum conditions was investigated. It was observed that 0.416 mM hydrogen peroxide increased the system's efficiency and decreased reaction time by 40 min. The reaction followed first-order kinetic. Hydrogen peroxide alone did not contribute to oxidizing the contaminant, and its positive impact was attributed to decreasing electron-hole recombination in the photocatalytic process. Not only can the hydrogen peroxide-assisted photocatalytic process decrease retention time in treatment units, but it can also result in more contaminant degradation. Therefore, it can reduce the treatment cost.

Abstract
1-(2-ethylsulfonylethyl)-2-methyl-5-nitro-imidazole (1EMI) C8H13N3O4S also known as Tinidazole, selected for its antiprotozoal property is extensively used for spectroscopic elucidations and computational aspects using density functional methods. Along with spectral conclusions, further investigations on fundamental reactive properties such as electrical, optical, nonlinear combined with DFT simulations were performed. Molecular docking procedure supports the results of chosen appropriate antiprotozoal agent based on ligand-protein interactions. Experimental and simulated (B3LYP/6-311++G (d,p)) IR and Raman spectra showed concurrence. NLO analysis through first order hyperpolarizability parameter helps in finding the potential of 1EMI as a good NLO candidate. Charge delocalization and the stability of the compound were discussed using natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis. Furthermore, Electron localization function (ELF), local orbital locator (LOL), and Frontier molecular orbitals (FMO) were studied. Besides, Mulliken population analysis on atomic charges, Energy gap, chemical potential, global hardness, softness, ionization potential, electronegativity, electrophilicity index along thermodynamic parameters (enthalpy, entropy and heat capacity) have been calculated. Drug likeness parameters and molecular docking approach enabled to check pharmaceutical potential and biological activity of 1EMI. The biological activity of 1EMI through ligand and protein interactions have been confirmed theoretically for the treatment of Malaria, Invasive aspergillosis and Mycobacterium tuberculosis with respect to chosen proteins. Three different activity targets and protein interactions are quite successful revealing the bond distances, intermolecular energy, binding energy and inhibition constant. 2D interaction profile image of the two maximum interacted proteins and also Ramachandran plot used to show stereochemistry of selected protein. The activities of 1EMI were studied in accordance with literature survey and the results were presented.

Abstract
This article represents the spectroscopic and computational studies of two new pyrazine compounds. In order to establish the structure and functional nature of the compounds, we have employed Fourier transformed infrared (FT-IR) and Raman spectra, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra, and ultraviolet (UV) absorptions and have compared them with the simulated computational spectra and found that they are in the agreeable range. Simulated hyperpolarisability values are used to obtain the nonlinear optic (NLO) activity of the compound, to be used in organic electronic materials. The charge transfer and related properties was investigated by the simulation of electronic spectrum with time dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). Natural transition orbitals (NTO) provides information about which region of the molecules are more involved in the electronic transitions and the charge transfer properties for the lowest energy excitation have been analyzed on the basis of electron density variation. Molecular dynamics simulations provide information about the behavior of the molecule in solutions. Frontier orbital analysis and study of various reactivity descriptors like ALIE and Fukui provided deep knowledge on the reactivity side. Molecular docking has been also performed to investigate the interaction between title molecules and exhibits inhibitory activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa Enoyl-Acyl carrier protein reductase (Fabl).

Abstract
2-[N-(carboxymethyl)anilino] acetic acid (PIDAA) molecule has been spectroscopically characterized and computationally investigated for its fundamental reactive properties by a combination of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and molecular docking procedure. A comparison drawn between the simulated and experimentally attained spectra by FT-Raman and FT-IR showed concurrence. The natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis enabled in comprehending the stability and charge delocalization in the title molecule. The first hyperpolarizability which is an important parameter for future studies of nonlinear optics (NLO) was calculated to check the potential of the molecule to be an NLO material. Besides, frontier molecular orbitals (FMO), electron localization function (ELF) and localized orbital locator (LOL) analysis were performed. Energy gap (ΔE), electronegativity (χ), chemical potential (μ), global hardness (η), softness (S), Mulliken population analysis on atomic charges and thermodynamic properties of the title compound at different temperatures have been calculated. The local reactive properties of PIDAA have been addressed by MEP and ALIE surfaces, together with bond dissociation energy for hydrogen abstraction (H-BDE). MD simulations have been used in order to identify atoms with pronounced interactions with water molecules. The pharmaceutical potential of PIDAA has been considered by the analysis of drug likeness parameters and molecular docking procedure. The biological activity of the molecule in terms of molecular docking has been analyzed theoretically for the treatment of SARS and minimum binding energy calculated. The Ramachandran plot was used to check the stereochemistry of the protein structure. In addition, a comparison of the physiochemical parameters of PIDAA and commercially available drugs (Yu et al., 2004; Tan et al., 2004; Elshabrawy et al., 2014; Chu et al., 2004; Gopal Samy and Xavier, 2015) were carried out.

Abstract
Porphyrins are known as effective photosensitizers and can be an interesting key in phototreatment of water contaminated with micropollutants such as pharmaceuticals. They already showed to be efficient photocatalysts for the degradation of dyes, chlorophenols and other pollutants. This work demonstrates the applicability of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin (H2TF5PP) as photosensitizer for treatment of water contaminated with metoprolol, a highly prescribed β-blocker, which is not completely removed in sewage treatment plants. Studies were firstly developed under homogeneous conditions with simulated solar radiation and porphyrin was found to be efficient in the photodegradation of metoprolol, following a pseudo-first order kinetics with ca. 90% metoprolol degradation after 12 h. Experiments in presence of scavengers confirmed the mechanism of degradation via singlet oxygen. Appearance of several new peaks in HPLC chromatograms indicates the formation of products, identified by HPLC-MSn. Furthermore, the porphyrin was immobilized on a silica support and used as heterogeneous photocatalyst in degradation of metoprolol. Experiments using this heterogeneous photocatalyst under real solar irradiation were also performed, and similar results were obtained. Kinetic comparison of metoprolol photodegradation in buffer solution and in real wastewater treatment plant effluent showed that the efficiency of the immobilized porphyrin was not decreased by the complex matrix of the effluent.

Abstract
The surface modification of commercial TiO2 Hombikat (TiO2) using nanoparticles of fullerene C60 with tetrahydrofuran (THF-nC60), as well as fullerenol C60(OH)24 nanoparticles (FNP) was investigated in this study. Characterization of THF-nC60, FNP, TiO2, TiO2/THF-nC60, and TiO2/FNP was studied by using DES, ELS, TEM, SEM, DRS and BET measurements and their photoactivity has been examined on the mesotrione degradation under simulated sunlight. It was found that FNP in self-assembled nanocomposite TiO2/FNP increased negatively charge, as well as catalytic surface of TiO2. In addition, TiO2/FNP exhibits a shift of band gap energy to lower values compared to TiO2 and TiO2/THF-nC60. BET surface area has not showed significant differences among catalysts. Furthermore, it was found that the highest photoactivity was obtained for TiO2/FNP system. Besides, influence of different concentrations of electron acceptors (H2O2 and KBrO3), as well as scavengers on the kinetics of mesotrione removal in aqueous solution with/without TiO2 and FNP under simulated sunlight was investigated. Namely, addition of mentioned electron acceptors has resulted in higher mesotrione degradation efficiency compared to O2 alone. Besides, in the first period substrate degradation probably takes place via hydroxyl radicals and after 60 min of irradiation the reaction mechanism proceeds mainly via holes. The most efficient system for mesotrione degradation and mineralization were TiO2/7 mM KBrO3 and TiO2/7 mM KBrO3/40 μl FNP, respectively.

Abstract
In this work we have investigated in details the process of degradation of the 4-amino-6-chlorobenzene-1,3-disulfonamide (ABSA), stable hydrolysis product of frequently used pharmaceutical hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ), as one of the most ubiquitous contaminants in the sewage water. The study encompassed investigation of degradation by hydrolysis, photolysis, and photocatalysis employing commercially available TiO2 Degussa P25 catalyst. The process of direct photolysis and photocatalytic degradation were investigated under different type of lights. Detailed insights into the reactive properties of HCTZ and ABSA have been obtained by density functional theory calculations and molecular dynamics simulations. Specifically, preference of HCTZ towards hydrolysis was confirmed experimentally and explained using computational study. Results obtained in this study indicate very limited efficiency of hydrolytic and photolytic degradation in the case of ABSA, while photocatalytic degradation demonstrated great potential. Namely, after 240 min of photocatalytic degradation, 65% of ABSA was mineralizated in water/TiO2 suspension under SSI, while the nitrogen was predominantly present as NH4+. Reaction intermediates were studied and a number of them were detected using LC-ESI-MS/MS. This study also involves toxicity assessment of HCTZ, ABSA, and their mixtures formed during the degradation processes towards mammalian cell lines (rat hepatoma, H-4-II-E, human colon adenocarcinoma, HT-29, and human fetal lung, MRC-5). Toxicity assessments showed that intermediates formed during the process of photocatalysis exerted only mild cell growth effects in selected cell lines, while direct photolysis did not affect cell growth.
