Biomass screening for syngas production by flash photopyrolysis

A few seconds flash photopyrolysis is used as efficient screening tool for the investigation of selected biomass in producing syngas, hydrogen and biochar. This innovative approach allowed rapid pyrolysis of the biomass, which was followed by a precise gas analysis and quantification, using Mass Spectrometry (MS). The analysis of the gas composition from three distinct biomass wastes in this study provides new insights into their thermochemical characteristics, expanding thus our knowledge of the potential of the selected biomass resources for the production of carbon, syngas, and/or hydrogen-rich gas production. This enhanced characterization revealed the potential of biomass transformation in contributing to innovative green energy sustainable solutions.

Chemoenzymatic valorization of agricultural wastes into 4-hydroxyvaleric acid via levulinic acid

Given that (i) levulinic acid (LA) is one of the most significant platform chemicals derived from biomass and (ii) 4-hydroxyvaleric acid (4-HV) is a potential LA derivative, the aim of this study is to achieve chemoenzymatic valorization of LA, which was obtained from agricultural wastes, to 4-HV. The thermochemical process utilized agricultural wastes (i.e., rice straw and corncob) as feedstocks and successfully produced LA, ranging from 25.1 to 65.4 mM. Additionally, formate was co-produced and used as a hydrogen source for the enzymatic hydrogenation of LA. Finally, engineered 3-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase from Alcaligenes faecalis (eHBDH) was applicable for catalyzing the conversion of agricultural wastes-driven LA, resulting in a maximum concentration of 11.32 mM 4-HV with a conversion rate of 48.2%. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report describing the production of 4-HV from actual biomass, and the results might provide insights into the valorization of agricultural wastes.

Steam explosion pretreatment improves acetic acid organosolv delignification of oil palm mesocarp fibers and sugarcane bagasse

Steam explosion can be used to pretreat lignocellulosic materials to decrease energy and chemical consumption during pulping to obtain environmentally friendly lignin and to improve lignin yield without changing its structure. The objective of this study was to evaluate the extraction of lignin from oil palm mesocarp fibers and sugarcane bagasse using steam explosion pretreatment followed by acetosolv. The biomasses were pretreated at 168 °C for a reaction time of 10 min. Steam explosion combined with acetosolv at lower severities was also carried out. Steam explosion followed by acetosolv increased the lignin yield by approximately 15% and 17% in oil palm mesocarp fibers and sugarcane bagasse, respectively. In addition, steam explosion decreased the reaction time of acetosolv four-fold while maintaining the lignin yield from sugarcane bagasse. Similar results were not obtained for oil palm mesocarp. High-purity and high-quality lignins were obtained using steam explosion pretreatment with structural characteristics similar to raw ones. Sugarcane bagasse lignin seems to be a better option for application in material science due its higher lignin yield and higher thermal stability. Our findings demonstrate that steam explosion is efficient for improving lignin yield and/or decreasing pulping severity.

Valorization of lignocellulosic fibres of paper waste into levulinic acid using solid and aqueous Brønsted acid

This study aims to produce levulinic acid (LA) from paper towel waste in environment-friendly and economically feasible conditions, and evaluate the difference using solid and aqueous Brønsted acids. Direct dehydration of glucose to LA required sufficiently strong Brønsted acidity, where Amberlyst 36 demonstrated rapid production of approximately 30Cmol% of LA in 20min. However, the maximum yield of LA was limited by mass transfer. In contrast, the yield of LA gradually increased to over 40Cmol% in 1M H₂SO₄ at 150°C in 60min. The SEM images revealed the conversion in dilute acids under microwave at 150°C resulting in swelling structures of cellulose, which were similar to the pre-treatment process with concentrated acids. Further increase in reaction temperature to 200°C significantly shortened the reaction time from 60 to 2.5min, which saved the energy cost as revealed in preliminary cost analysis.

Comparison of ultrasound-assisted Fenton reaction and dilute acid-catalysed steam explosion pretreatment of corncobs: cellulose characteristics and enzymatic saccharification

As an emerging method for lignocellulose pretreatment, the ultrasound-assisted Fenton reaction is not well developed in comparison to the dilute acid-catalysed steam explosion.
