Metal vs. Metal-Free Catalysts for Oxidation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural and Levoglucosenone to Biosourced Chemicals

Lignocellulosic feedstocks, such as forestry biomass and agricultural crop residues, can be utilized to generate biofuels and biochemicals. Converting these organic waste materials into biochemicals is widely regarded as a remedial approach to develop a sustainable, clean, and green energy source. Nevertheless, are these methods sustainable and clean? Prior studies have shown that most such conversions use metals - including heavy metals or noble metals - as catalysts. In addition to the fact that many metals (e. g., aluminum, cobalt, titanium, platinum) have been listed as critical minerals, these methods suffer from high cost, deactivation, and leakage problems and the release of toxic wastes. This Review summarizes catalytic methods using metal and metal-free catalysts for the oxidation of the platform molecules 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and levoglucosenone and demonstrates the potential and effectiveness of metal-free catalysts.

Hydroxyapatite-Supported Polyoxometalates for the Highly Selective Aerobic Oxidation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural or Glucose to 2,5-Diformylfuran under Atmospheric Pressure

(NH4 )5 H6 PV8 Mo4 O40 supported on hydroxyapatite (HAP) (PMo4 V8 /HAP (n)) was prepared through the ion exchange of hydroxy groups. This ion exchange favored the oxidative conversion of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) in a one-pot cascade reaction with 96.0 % conversion and 83.8 % yield under 10 mL/min of O2 flow. PMo4 V8 /HAP (31) was used to explore the production of DFF directly from glucose with the highest yield of 47.9 % so far under atmospheric oxygen, whereas the yield of DFF increased to 54.7 % in a one-pot and two-step reaction. These results indicated that the active sites in PMo4 V8 /HAP (31) retained their activities without any interference toward one another, which enabled the production of DFF in a more cost-saving way by only using oxygen and one catalyst in a one-step reaction. Meanwhile, the rigid structure of HAP and strong interaction in PMo4 V8 /HAP (31) allowed this catalyst to be reused for at least six times with high stability and duration.

Recent catalytic routes for the preparation and the upgrading of biomass derived furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural

Furans represent one of the most important classes of intermediates in the conversion of non-edible lignocellulosic biomass into bio-based chemicals and fuels. At present, bio-furan derivatives are generally obtained from cellulose and hemicellulose fractions of biomass via the acid-catalyzed dehydration of their relative C6-C5 sugars and then converted into a wide range of products. Furfural (FUR) and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) are surely the most used furan-based feedstocks since their chemical structure allows the preparation of various high-value-added chemicals. Among several well-established catalytic approaches, hydrogenation and oxygenation processes have been efficiently adopted for upgrading furans; however, harsh reaction conditions are generally required. In this review, we aim to discuss the conversion of biomass derived FUR and HMF through unconventional (transfer hydrogenation, photocatalytic and electrocatalytic) catalytic processes promoted by heterogeneous catalytic systems. The reaction conditions adopted, the chemical nature and the physico-chemical properties of the most employed heterogeneous systems in enhancing the catalytic activity and in driving the selectivity to desired products are presented and compared. At the same time, the latest results in the production of FUR and HMF through novel environmental friendly processes starting from lignocellulose as well as from wastes and by-products obtained in the processing of biomass are also overviewed.

Experimental and DFT Study of Metal-Free Catalyst for Selective Oxidation of Biomass-Derived Molecule (HMF)

Catalytic conversion of biomass or biomass-derived intermediate to value-added chemicals is important for both biomass waste management and production of industrially important chemicals. Oxidation of 5-hydroximethyl furfural (HMF) is considered one of the most important biomass conversion processes, which resulted in many value-added products such as 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF), 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (HMFCA), and 5-formyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (FFCA). In this study, the three morphologies of CdS catalyst (nanorod, nanosheet, and nanosphere) with two different crystalline structures are synthesized and characterized by SEM, TEM, and XRD analysis. The oxidation of HMF to FFCA is performed using the synthesized catalysts in the presence of different solvents and oxidizing agents. We find that CdS nanorod provides the selective oxidation of HMF to FFCA in the presence of dimethyl sulfoxide solvent and tert-butyl hydrogen peroxide oxidizing agent. The density functional theory (DFT) simulations are carried out to explain the catalytic activity of the CdS catalyst for oxidation of HMF to FFCA. The DFT simulations show that CdS is an excellent catalyst for binding HMF on the CdS surface. Our findings provide the way of effective oxidation of biomass into value-added products using the cheap CdS catalyst.

Pd-based nanoparticles: Plant-assisted biosynthesis, characterization, mechanism, stability, catalytic and antimicrobial activities

Among various metal nanoparticles, palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) are one of the most important and fascinating nanomaterials. An important concern about the preparation of Pd NPs is the formation of toxic by-products, dangerous wastes and harmful pollutants. The best solution to exclude and/or minimize these toxic substances is plant mediated biosynthesis of Pd NPs. Biogenic Pd-based NPs from plant extracts have been identified as valuable nanocatalysts in various catalytic reactions because of their excellent activities and selectivity. They have captured the attention of researchers owing to their economical, sustainable, green and eco-friendly nature. This review attempts to cover the recent progresses in the fabrication, characterization and broad applications of biogenic Pd NPs in environmental and catalytic systems. In addition, the stability of biosynthesized Pd NPs and mechanism of their formation are investigated.

Catalytic aerial oxidation of 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furfural to furan-2,5-dicarboxylic acid over Ni–Pd nanoparticles supported on Mg(OH)2 nanoflakes for the synthesis of furan diesters

Ni–Pd/Mg(OH)₂-catalyzed efficient aerial oxidation of 5-HMF to FDCA for the synthesis of furan diesters as potential precursor for application in biomass-derived plastics.
