Wood-Sourced Polymers as Support for Catalysis by Group 10 Transition Metals

Despite providing interesting solutions to reduce the number of synthetic steps, to decrease energy consumption or to generate less waste, therefore contributing to a more sustainable way of producing important chemicals, the expansion of the use of homogeneous catalysis in industrial processes is hampered by several drawbacks. One of the most important is the difficulty to recycle the noble metals generating potential high costs and pollution of the synthesized products by metal traces detrimental to their applications. Supporting the metals on abundant and cheap biosourced polymers has recently appeared as an almost ideal solution: They are much easier to recover from the reaction medium and usually maintain high catalytic activity. The present bibliographical review focuses on the development of catalysts based on group 10 transition metals (nickel, palladium, platinum) supported on biopolymers obtained from wood, such as cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, and their derivatives. The applications of these catalysts in organic synthesis or depollution are also addressed in this review with examples of C-C couplings, oxidation, or hydrogenation reactions.

Unveiling the Surface and the Ultrastructure of Palladized Fungal Biotemplates

In this paper, two biosystems based on filamentous fungi and Pd nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized and structurally characterized. In the first case, results concerning the integration and distribution of Pd-NPs on Phialomyces macrosporus revealed that nanoparticles are accumulated on the cell wall, keeping the cytoplasm isolated from abiotic particles. However, the Penicillium sp. species showed an unexpected internalization of Pd-NPs in the fungal cytosol, becoming a promising biosystem to further studies of in vivo catalytic reactions. Next, we report a new solution-based strategy to prepare palladized biohybrids through sequential reduction of Pd²⁺ ions over previously harvested fungus/Au-NP composites. The chemical composition and the morphology of the biohybrid surface were characterized using a combination of scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and photoelectron spectroscopy. The deposition of Pd⁰ over the fungal surface produced biohybrids with a combination of Au and Pd in the NPs. Interestingly, other chemical species such as Au⁺ and Pd²⁺ are also observed on the outermost wall of microorganisms. Finally, the application of A. niger/AuPd-NP biohybrids in the 3-methyl-2-buten-1-ol hydrogenation reaction is presented for the first time. Biohybrids with a high fraction of Pd⁰ are active for this catalytic reaction.

Iodine activation: a general method for catalytic enhancement of thiolate monolayer-protected metal clusters

To enhance catalytic activity, the present study details a general approach for partial thiolate ligand removal from monolayer-protected clusters (MPCs) by straightforward in situ addition of iodine. Two model reactions are examined to illustrate the effects on the catalytic activity of glutathione (SG)-capped Au MPCs serving as a catalyst for the NaBH4 reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol and SG-capped Pd MPCs serving as a catalyst for the hydrogenation/isomerization of allyl alcohol. Iodine addition promoted partial thiolate ligand removal from both MPCs and improved the catalytic properties, presumably due to greater surface exposure of the metal cores as a result of ligand dissociation. The rate of 4-nitrophenol reduction increased from 0.066 min-1 in the absence of I2 to 0.505 min-1 in the presence of 2.0 equivalents I2 (equivalents based on total ligated glutathione). The reaction of allyl alcohol to produce 1-propanol and propanal was similarly accelerated as indicated by the increase in turnover frequency from 131 to 230 moles products per moles catalyst per h by addition of 0.2 equivalents I2. In both reactions, as the amount of I2 added increases the catalyst recyclability decreases due to catalyst instability. Low equivalents of I2 are optimal when considering both reaction rate and catalyst recyclability.

Stereoselective Double Reduction of 3-Methyl-2-cyclohexenone, by Use of Palladium and Platinum Nanoparticles, in Tandem with Alcohol Dehydrogenase

The combination of metal nanoparticles (Pd or Pt NPs) with NAD-dependent thermostable alcohol dehydrogenase (TADH) resulted in the one-flask catalytic double reduction of 3-methyl-2-cyclohexenone to 3-(1S,3S)-methylcyclohexanol. In this article, some assumptions about the interactions between a chemocatalyst and a biocatalyst have been proposed. It was demonstrated that the size of the NPs was the critical parameter for the mutual inhibition: the bigger the NPs, the more harmful for the enzyme they were, even if the NPs themselves were only moderately inactivated. Conversely, the smaller the NPs, the more minimal the TADH denaturation, although they were dramatically inhibited. Resuming, the chemocatalysts were very sensitive to deactivation, which was not related to the amount of enzyme used, while the inhibition of the biocatalyst can be strongly reduced by minimizing the NPs/TADH ratio used to catalyze the reaction. Among some methods to avoid direct binding of NPs with TADH, we found that using large Pd NPs and protecting their surfaces with a silica shell, the overall yield of 3-(1S,3S)-methylcyclohexanol was maximized (36%).

Effects of Noncovalent Interactions on the Catalytic Activity of Unsupported Colloidal Palladium Nanoparticles Stabilized with Thiolate Ligands

This article presents the systematic evaluation of colloidal palladium nanoparticles functionalized with well-defined small organic ligands that provide spatial control of the geometric and electronic surface properties of nanoparticle catalysts. Palladium nanoparticles stabilized with thiolate ligands of different structures and functionalities (linear alkyl vs cyclohexyl vs phenyl) are synthesized using the thiosulfate protocol in a two-phase system. The structure and composition of palladium nanoparticles are characterized using transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, NMR, and UV-vis spectroscopies. The catalysis studies show that the chemical and structural compositions of monolayers surrounding the nanoparticle core greatly influence the overall activity and selectivity of colloidal palladium nanoparticle catalysts for the hydrogenation, isomerization, and hydrogenolysis of allylic alcohols. Especially, noncovalent interactions between surface phenyl ligands and incoming aromatic substrates are found to have a profound influence on the selectivity of colloidal palladium nanoparticles.

Unsupported Micellar Palladium Nanoparticles for Biphasic Hydrogenation and Isomerization of Hydrophobic Allylic Alcohols in Water

This article presents the evaluation of water-soluble palladium nanoparticles with hydrophobic active sites that are ideal for the biphasic colloidal catalysis of water-insoluble organic substrates in aqueous solution. Palladium nanoparticles stabilized with ω-carboxylate-functionalized alkanethiolate are first synthesized using ω-carboxylate-S-alkylthiosulfate as their ligand precursor. The biphasic catalysis is carried out for the reaction of hydrophobic allylic alcohols without using any additional mixing solvent or surfactant, which results in the complete consumption of substrates under the atmospheric pressure of H₂ gas and at room temperature in less than 24 h. Systematic investigations on the influence of pH and substrate size are also performed to examine the utility of these thiolate-capped palladium nanoparticles as structurally stable and water-soluble micellar catalysts for the biphasic reaction.
