Composites and Materials Prepared from Boron Cluster Anions and Carboranes

Here, we present composites and materials that can be prepared starting with boron hydride cluster compounds (decaborane, decahydro-closo-decaborate and dodecahydro-closo-dodecaborate anions and carboranes). Recent examples of their utilization as boron protective coatings including using them to synthesize boron carbide, boron nitride, metal borides, metal-containing composites, and neutron shielding materials are discussed. The data are generalized demonstrate the versatile application of materials based on boron cluster anions and carboranes in various fields.

Decaborane: From Alfred Stock and Rocket Fuel Projects to Nowadays

The review covers more than a century of decaborane chemistry from the first synthesis by Alfred Stock to the present day. The main attention is paid to the reactions of the substitution of hydrogen atoms by various atoms and groups with the formation of exo-polyhedral boron-halogen, boron-oxygen, boron-sulfur, boron-nitrogen, boron-phosphorus, and boron-carbon bonds. Particular attention is paid to the chemistry of conjucto-borane anti-[B18H22], whose structure is formed by two decaborane moieties with a common edge, the chemistry of which has been intensively developed in the last decade.

Enhancement of the Interlayer Interaction between Polystyrene and Polyvinyl Alcohol by Ozone Treatment

The ozonization modification of polystyrene (PS) was conducted in acidic condition to enhance the interfacial interaction between PS and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). Infrared spectra results revealed that the carbonyl and hydroxyl groups were successfully introduced to the PS film by ozonization. The hydrophobic PS was turned to be hydrophilic to some extent by contact angle experiment, which led to the enhancement of interfacial adhesion between PS and PVA. In addition, the adsorption of PS to PVA was also improved. Nano indenter measurement indicated the interfacial interaction between PS film and PVA film was obviously enhanced by 40% after ozonization at room temperature for 2 h in acidic condition, which will benefit for fabricating laser inertial confinement fusion container.

Synthesis and Ceramic Conversion of a New Organodecaborane Preceramic Polymer with High-Ceramic-Yield

Boron carbide is one of the hardest materials known, with diamond-like mechanical properties and excellent chemical stability. It is wildly used in military defense area, nuclear industry, aerospace technology, etc. Precursor-derived ceramics have made it easier to produce pure boron carbide in processed forms and expand its applications. The challenge of this method is the synthesis of precursor polymer with high-ceramic-yield. The aim of the present work is to develop a new poly(6-norbornenyldecaborane-co-decaborane) [P(ND-co-D)] copolymer, which was successfully synthesized via ring-opening metathesis polymerization of 6-norbornenyldecaborane and tandem hydroboration with decaborane. The obtained light-yellow powder displayed good solubility, and was fully characterized by NMR, FT-IR and GPC analysis. Thermogravimetric analysis demonstrated that the char yield was up to 79%. The polymer-to-ceramic transformation process and pyrolysis mechanism has shown that the rearrangement of carbon chains of P(ND-co-D) mainly occurred in the temperature range of 350 °C~470 °C. Furthermore, the crystallization behavior and microstructures of derived ceramics were studied by XRD and SEM. Nano-sized boron carbide powders were prepared by pyrolysis of P(ND-co-D) under argon at 1400 °C for 2 h, while the structure and morphologies of the obtained rhombohedral B₄C were investigated.
