Bimetallic nickel molybdate supported Pt catalyst for efficient removal of formaldehyde at low temperature

Efficient removal of formaldehyde from indoor environments is of significance for human health. In this work, a typical binary transition metal oxide that could provide various oxidation states, β-NiMoO₄, was employed as a support to immobilize the active Pt component (Pt/NiMoO₄) for catalytic formaldehyde elimination at low ambient temperature (15°C). The results showed that the hydrothermal preparation temperature and time had a noticeable impact on the morphology and catalytic activity of the samples. The catalyst prepared with hydrothermal temperature of 150°C for 4 hr (Pt-150-4) exhibited superior catalytic activity and stability mainly due to its distinctly porous structure, relative abundance of adsorbed surface hydroxyls/water, and high oxidation ability, which resulted from the interaction of Pt with Ni and Mo of the bimetallic NiMoO₄ support. Our results might shed light on the rational design of multifunctional catalysts for removal of indoor air pollutants at low ambient temperature.

A Computational Study on the Variation of Bandgap Due to Native Defects in Non-Stoichiometric NiO and Pd, Pt Doping in Stoichiometric NiO

This paper presents a computational study of non-stoichiometric nickel oxide in a 64-cell NiO system to model and validate localized heating effects due to nanosecond laser irradiation. Variation in the Bandgap of NiO is studied as a function of varying concentrations of native defects, ranging from 0 to 25%. It is observed that there is a slight increase in the bandgap from 3.80eV for stoichiometric NiO to 3.86eV for Ni-rich NiO and to 3.95eV for O-rich NiO. It is hence deduced that the experimental laser irradiation leads to simultaneous reduction of Ni2+ ions and the oxidation of NiO as the number of laser pulses increase. As well, a detailed study on the effects of doping nickel family elements, i.e., palladium (Pd) and platinum (Pt), in stoichiometric NiO is presented. A bandgap decrease from 3.8eV for pure NiO to 2.5eV for Pd-doping and 2.0eV for Pt-doping for varying doping concentrations ranging from 0–25% Pd, Pt, respectively,is observed.

Hierarchically porous SiO2/C hollow microspheres: a highly efficient adsorbent for Congo Red removal

Hierarchically porous SiO₂/C hollow microspheres (HPSCHMs) were synthesized by a hydrothermal and NaOH-etching combined route. The adsorption performance of the prepared HPSCHMs was investigated to remove Congo Red (CR) in aqueous solution. The results show that the synthesized composite possesses a hollow microspherical structure with hierarchical pores and a diameter of about 100–200 nm, and its surface area is up to 1154 m² g⁻¹. This material exhibits a remarkable adsorption performance for CR in solution, and its maximum adsorption amount for CR can reach up to 2512 mg g⁻¹. It shows faster adsorption and much higher adsorption capacity than the commercial AC and γ-Al₂O₃ samples under the same conditions. The studies of the kinetics and thermodynamics indicate that the adsorption of CR on the PHSCHM sample obeys the pseudo-second order model well and belongs to physisorption. The adsorption activation energy is about 7.72 kJ mol⁻¹. In view of the hierarchically meso–macroporous structure, large surface area and pore volume, the HPSCHM material could be a promising adsorbent for removal of pollutants, and it could also be used as a catalyst support.

Preparation of a Pt/TiO2/cotton fiber composite catalyst with low air resistance for efficient formaldehyde oxidation at room temperature

Pt/TiO₂/cotton fiber catalyst was successfully prepared with much lower air resistance than powder-like sample. It can catalyze oxidation of HCHO into CO₂ and H₂O with an optimum Pt loading of 0.75 wt%. It also exhibited good catalytic stability.
