Synthesis and molecular structural studies of racemic chiral-at-vanadium(V) complexes using an unsymmetric achiral phenolic bidentate ligand

Mononuclear oxovanadium(V) complexes [V(O)XL (1: X = Ot-Bu, 2: X = Cl)] [H₂L: 2,2'-methylene bis(4,6-di-tert-butylphenol)(4'-tert-butyl-6'-(1-adamantyl)phenol)] directed towards asymmetric catalysis have been synthesised as racemic compounds using an unsymmetric and achiral phenolic bidentate ligand (H₂L), and NMR and UV-vis absorption spectroscopies, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and IR spectroscopy revealed their racemic chiral-at-vanadium structures in solution and in the crystal. In addition, theoretical calculations revealed that the HOMO-LUMO energy gap is smaller for unsymmetric ligands, which promotes d-orbital splitting of the metal centre.

Propylene homopolymerization and copolymerization with ethylene by acenaphthene-based α-diimine nickel complexes to access EPR-like elastomers

Structural and Thermal Properties of Ethylene-Norbornene Copolymers Obtained Using Vanadium Homogeneous and SIL Catalysts

The series of ethylene-norbornene (E-NB) copolymers was obtained using different vanadium homogeneous and supported ionic liquid (SIL) catalyst systems. The ¹³C and ¹H NMR (carbon and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy) together with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were applied to determine the composition of copolymers such as comonomer incorporation (C_NB), monomer dispersity (MD), monomer reactivity ratio (r_e), sequence length of ethylene (l_e) and tetrad microblock distributions. The relation between the type of catalyst, reaction conditions and on the other hand, the copolymer microstructure, chain termination reaction analyzed by the type of unsaturation are discussed. In addition, the thermal properties of E-NB copolymers such as the melting and crystallization behavior, like also the heterogeneity of composition described by successive the self-nucleation and annealing (SSA) and the dispersity index (DI) were determined.

Solution XANES and EXAFS analysis of active species of titanium, vanadium complex catalysts in ethylene polymerisation/dimerisation and syndiospecific styrene polymerisation

Mechanistic studies in homogeneous catalysis through the solution transition metal K Edge XANES (X-ray absorption near-edge structure) and EXAFS (Extended X-ray absorption fine structure) analysis for vanadium and titanium complex catalysts for ethylene polymerisation/dimerization, and syndiospecific styrene polymerisation, including interpretation of the XANES spectra, have been introduced. The core excitation spectra of the complexes based on the time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) can be used to interpret the Ti and V K-edge features and to extract information on the electronic structure from the XANES spectra. Theoretical calculations and experimental XAS analysis should have great potential for analysing the active species.

Dicerium letterbox-shaped tetraphenolates: f-block complexes designed for two-electron chemistry

Rare examples of molecular, dinuclear CeIII and PrIII complexes with robust Ln-coordination are accessible by use of the tetraphenolate pTP as a supporting, chelating O-donor ligand platform, pTP = [{2-(OC6H2R2-2,4)2CH}-C6H4-1,4]4- that favours the higher formal oxidation states accessible to rare earths. Two classes of complexes have been made from the platforms; one metallacyclic 2 + 2 [Ln2(pTP)2] framework with a rigid, letterbox-shaped geometry and [Ln(aryloxide)4] core, and one more flexible [(LnX)2(pTP)] with one rare earth ion at either end of the platform. The LnIII letterbox complexes have two K+ counter-cations, one of which sits inside the letterbox, binding the two central arenes of the platform sufficiently strongly that it cannot be displaced by solvent molecules (THF and pyridine) or crown ethers. Oxidation of the CeIII lettterboxes is facile and forms the unusual neutral molecular (CeIV)2 letterbox in which the CeIV reduction potential is -1.83 V vs. Fc/Fc+. The electronic structure of the Ce(iii/iv) complexes was investigated using HERFD-XAS (high energy resolution fluorescence detection X-ray absorption spectroscopy).

Alkoxide ligand controlled self-assembling of (imido)vanadium(V) compounds having a tetrahedral VO3N geometry

The reaction of (1S,2S)-(-)-1,2-diphenylethylenediamine with VO(OⁱPr)₃ in the presence of NaH was found to afford the binuclear (imido)vanadium(V) triisopropoxide, [(OⁱPr)₃V(N-meso-1,2-DPE-N)V(OⁱPr)₃] (DPE = diphenylethylene), (1a_RS/SS). Using (1R,2R)-(+)-1,2-diphenylethylenediamine as a starting material, one-step reaction also proceeded to form the binuclear (imido)vanadium(V) triisopropoxide, [(OⁱPr)₃V(N-meso-1,2-DPE-N)V(OⁱPr)₃], (1a_RS/RR). The single-crystal X-ray structure determination of 1a_RS/SS revealed the hydrogen-bonded self-assembled structure utilizing the advantage of anti-conformation through the intermolecular hydrogen bonds of C-H···O pattern between phenyl and isopropoxide moieties, wherein each vanadium atom is coordinated in a nearly tetrahedral VO₃N geometry (τ₄ = 0.017 and 0.057). On the contrary, a discrete (imido)vanadium(V) tris(triphenylsiloxide) unit, which possesses a nearly tetrahedral VO₃N arrangement around the vanadium metal center (τ₄ = 0.060), was observed in the crystal structure of the (4-methoxyphenylimido)vanadium(V) tris(triphenylsiloxide), [(p-MeOC₆H₄N)V(OSiPh₃)₃], (1b) with bulky triphenylsiloxide ligands.

Mono-oxo molybdenum(vi) and tungsten(vi) complexes bearing chelating aryloxides: synthesis, structure and ring opening polymerization of cyclic esters

Mono-oxo Mo and W complexes bearing di- or tetra-phenolates were active for the ROP of small cyclic esters, albeit with poor control. Related metallocalix[4]arenes were less active.

Copolymerization of ethylene with propylene and higher α-olefins catalyzed by (imido)vanadium(iv) dichloride complexes

We have synthesized and characterized a series of (imido)V(iv) complexes bearing different imido groups and coligands, to be used, in combination with an aluminum alkyl, as catalysts for the (co)polymerization of ethylene with propylene.

Synthesis, characterization and olefin polymerization behaviors of phenylene-bridged bis-β-carbonylenamine binuclear titanium complexes

Binuclear and multinuclear complexes have attracted much attention due to their unique catalytic performances for olefin polymerization compared with their mononuclear counterparts. In this work, a series of phenyl-bridged bis-β-carbonylenamine [O⁻NS^R] (R = alkyl or phenyl) tridentate ligands and their binuclear titanium complexes (Ti²L₁–Ti²L₅) were synthesized and characterized by ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, FTIR and elemental analysis. The molecular structure of ligand L₂ (R = ⁿPr) and its corresponding Ti complex Ti²L₂ were further investigated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, which showed that each titanium coordinated with six atoms to form a distorted octahedral configuration along with the conversion of the ligand from β-carbonylenamine to β-imino enol form. Under the activation of MMAO, these complexes catalyzed ethylene polymerization and ethylene/α-olefin copolymerization with extremely high activity (over 10⁶ g mol (Ti)⁻¹ h⁻¹ atm⁻¹) to produce high molecular weight polyethylene. At the same time, wider polydispersity as compared with the mononuclear counterpart TiL₆ was observed, indicating that two active catalytic centers may be present, consistent with the asymmetrical crystal structure of the binuclear titanium complex. Furthermore, these complexes possessed better thermal stability than their mononuclear analogues. Compared with the complexes bearing alkylthio sidearms, the complex Ti²L₅ bearing a phenylthio sidearm exhibited higher catalytic activity towards ethylene polymerization and produced polyethylene with much higher molecular weight, but with an appreciably lower 1-hexene incorporation ratio. Nevertheless, these bis-β-carbonylenamine-derived binuclear titanium complexes showed much higher ethylene/1-hexene copolymerization activity and 1-hexene incorporation ratios as compared with the methylene-bridged bis-salicylaldiminato binuclear titanium complexes, and the molecular weight and 1-hexene incorporation ratio could be flexibly tuned by the initial feed of α-olefin commoners and catalyst structures.

Phenyl-bridged bis-β-carbonylenamine binuclear titanium complexes were synthesized, characterized and used to catalyze ethylene (co)polymerization with extremely high activity.

Synthesis and Structural Analysis of (Imido)vanadium Dichloride Complexes Containing 2-(2'-Benz-imidazolyl)pyridine Ligands: Effect of Al Cocatalyst for Efficient Ethylene (Co)polymerization

(Imido)vanadium(V) dichloride complexes containing 2-(2'-benzimidazolyl)-6-methylpyridine ligand (L) of type V(NR)Cl2(L) [R = 1-adamantyl (Ad, 1), C6H5 (2), and 2,6-Me2C6H3 (3)] have been prepared, and their structures were determined by X-ray crystallography as distorted trigonal bipyramidal structures around vanadium. Reactions with ethylene using 1-3 in the presence of methylaluminoxane (MAO) afforded a mixture of oligomer and polymers, and the compositions were affected by the imido ligand employed. By contrast, 1-3 exhibited remarkable catalytic activities for ethylene polymerization in the presence of Me2AlCl; the phenylimido complex (2) exhibited the highest activity [80 100 kg-PE/mol-V·h turn over frequency (TOF, 2 850 000 h-1, 792 s-1)]. The ethylene copolymerizations with norbornene afforded ultrahigh-molecular-weight copolymers with uniform molecular weight distributions and compositions [e.g., M n = 1.71-2.66 × 106, M w/M n = 2.27-2.53]. On the basis of V nuclear magnetic resonance (51V NMR), electron spin resonance, and V K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra of the catalyst solution, the observed difference in the catalyst performance in the presence of (between) MAO and Me2AlCl cocatalyst should be due to the formation of different catalytically active species with different oxidation states. Apparent changes in the oxidation state were observed in the (especially in the NMR and XANES) spectra upon addition of Me2AlCl, whereas no significant changes in the spectra were observed in presence of MAO.
