Efficient removal of triclosan from water through activated carbon adsorption and photodegradation processes

This study investigated the application of adsorption with activated carbons (ACs) and photodegradation to reduce the concentration of triclosan (TCS) in aqueous solutions. Concerning adsorption, ACs (Darco, Norit, and F400) were characterised and batch experiments were performed to elucidate the effect of pH on equilibrium. The results showed that at pH = 7, the maximum adsorption capacity of TCS onto the ACs was 18.5 mg g-1 for Darco, 16.0 mg g-1 for Norit, and 15.5 mg g-1 for F400. The diffusional kinetic model allowed an adequate interpretation of the experimental data. The effective diffusivity varied and increased with the amount of TCS adsorbed, from 1.06 to 1.68 × 10-8 cm2 s-1. In the case of photodegradation, it was possible to ensure that the triclosan molecule was sensitive to UV light of 254 nm because the removal was over 80 % using UV light. The removal of TCS increased in the presence of sulfate radicals. It was possible to identify 2,4-dichlorophenol as one of the photolytic degradation products of triclosan, which does not represent an environmental hazard at low concentrations of triclosan in water. These results confirm that the use of AC Darco, Norit, and F400 and that photodegradation processes with UV light and persulfate radicals are effective in removing TCS from water, reaching concentration levels that do not constitute a risk to human health or environmental hazard. Both methods effectively eliminate pollutants with relatively easy techniques to implement.

On the Sorbent Ability and Reusability of Graphene-Oxide-Chitosan Aerogels for the Removal of Dyes from Wastewater

One of the most persistent issues affecting people worldwide is water contamination due to the indiscriminate disposal of pollutants, causing severe environmental problems. Dyes are among the most harmful contaminants because of their high chemical stability and consequently difficult degradation. To remove contaminants from water, adsorption is the most widely used and effective method. In this work, we recall the results already published about the synthesis, the characterization and the use of porous graphene-oxide-chitosan aerogels as a sorbent material. Those systems, prepared by mixing GO sheets and CS chains, using APS as a cross-linking agent, and by further lyophilization, were further characterized using nano-computed tomography, supplying more understanding about their micro and nano-structure. Their sorbent ability has been investigated also by the study of their isotherm of adsorption of two different anionic dyes: Indigo Carmine and Cibacron Brilliant Yellow. Those analyses confirmed the potentialities of the aerogels and their affinity for those anionic dyes. Moreover, the possibility of regenerating and reusing the material was evaluated as a key aspect for applications of this kind. The treatment with NaOH, to promote the desorption of adsorbed dyes, and subsequent washing with HCl, to re-protonate the system, ensured the regeneration of the gels and their use in multiple cycles of adsorption with the selected water contaminants.

Mixed Matrix Membranes Adsorbers (MMMAs) for the Removal of Uremic Toxins from Dialysate

We developed Mixed Matrix Membrane Adsorbers (MMMAs) formed by cellulose acetate and various sorbent particles (activated carbon, zeolites ZSM-5 and clinoptilolite) for the removal of urea, creatinine and uric acid from aqueous solutions, to be used in the regeneration of spent dialysate water from Hemodialysis (HD). This process would allow reducing the disproportionate amount of water consumed and permits the development of closed-loop HD devices, such as wearable artificial kidneys. The strategy of MMMAs is to combine the high permeability of porous membranes with the toxin-capturing ability of embedded particles. The water permeability of the MMMAs ranges between 600 and 1500 L/(h m² bar). The adsorption of urea, the limiting toxin, can be improved of about nine times with respect to the pure cellulose acetate membrane. Flow experiments demonstrate the feasibility of the process in a real HD therapy session.

Fe-TiO2/AC and Co-TiO2/AC Composites: Novel Photocatalysts Prepared from Waste Streams for the Efficient Removal and Photocatalytic Degradation of Cibacron Yellow F-4G Dye

Fe-TiO2/AC and Co-TiO2/AC composites were prepared from activated carbon (AC) derived from residues of peanut hulls and TiO2 photocatalyst, electrochemically prepared from titanium scrap, and doped with Fe and Co, respectively. The adsorption capacity and photocatalytic activity of the Fe-TiO2/AC and Co-TiO2/AC composites were studied for removing and degrading Cibacron Yellow F-4G (CYF-4G) from wastewater. Doped ACs were characterized by thermogravimetry (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), a new X-ray absorption technique (XRA), and elemental analysis (EA). Interesting relationships were found between SEM, XRA, and TGA data and the doped amount of catalyst on ACs. Optimal dye adsorption was found at a pH of 2.0. The CYF-4G adsorption kinetics are followed according to the pseudo-second order model. The experimental data revealed that the Langmuir model fits better than the Freundlich and Temkin models. A decrease in adsorption capacity was observed when the catalyst dope percentage increased. A removal and degradation efficiency of the dye close to 100% was achieved around 120 min. A synergistic adsorption and photocatalytic degradation effect of the Fe-TiO2/AC and Co-TiO2/AC composites could be observed when adsorption experiments were conducted under simulated visible radiation.

Facile preparation of nitrogen and sulfur co-doped graphene-based aerogel for simultaneous removal of Cd2+ and organic dyes

The need in simultaneous removal of heavy metals and organic compounds dictates the development of synthetic adsorbents with tailor-made properties. A nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) co-doped graphene-based aerogel (GBA) modified with 2,5-dithiobisurea was synthesized hydrothermally for simultaneous adsorption of Cd²⁺ and organic dyes-safranin-O (SO), crystal violet (CV), and methylene blue (MB). 2,5-Dithiobisurea was used as nitrogen and sulfur sources to introduce N and S-containing functional group onto graphene oxide. The adsorption mechanism of GBA towards Cd²⁺ and organic dyes was studied by Dumwald-Wagner models and the results showed that surface and intraparticle diffusion was the key factor in controlling the rate of adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacities of GBA towards Cd²⁺, SO, CV, and MB comprised 1.755, 0.949, 0.538, and 0.389 mmol/g in monocomponent system, respectively. Adsorption synergism was observed with respect to Cd²⁺ in presence of the dyes. The performance of GBA with respect to Cd²⁺ removal from binary solutions, Cd²⁺-SO, Cd²⁺-CV, and Cd²⁺-MB, was enhanced by the presence of the dyes significantly, while the adsorption capacities towards the dyes were not affected by the presence of Cd²⁺.
