Macroalgal-derived alginate/wastepaper hydrogel to alleviate sunflower drought stress

MAIN CONCLUSION

Alginate/wastepaper hydrogel mitigated sunflower drought stress by increasing the water holding capacity of the soil and decreasing phosphate leaching. The hydrogel promoted sunflower growth and decreased stress related biomarkers. There is a growing interest in the development of biodegradable hydrogels for the alleviation of drought stress on plants. A novel hydrogel based on brown algal-derived alginate and wastepaper was developed and tested as a soil supplement for sunflower growth under moderate (75% field capacity (FC)) and extreme (50% FC) water-deficit stress. The hydrogel showed fast swelling in water, which obeyed the pseudo-first order kinetics. Besides, it increased the water holding capacity of the soil and exhibited a good phosphate adsorption (37 mg PO₄^- g^-1 hydrogel after 6 days) in the soil, and more than 67% of the adsorbed phosphate was desorbed after 20 days. Thus, the phosphate leaching from the hydrogel-amended soil in a column experiment was only 2.77 mg after 4 times of over-irrigation, compared to 11.91 mg without the hydrogel. The hydrogel application promoted various root traits such as fresh and dry biomass, area, and length by > 2-, > 1.6-, > 1.35-, and > 1.3-folds under both water regimes in relation to the no-hydrogel treatments at the same conditions. Furthermore, the sunflower shoots exhibited similar proline contents to the well-watered control (100% FC), with > 50% reduction in relation to the drought-stressed plants under the same conditions. Similarly, the malondialdehyde contents were lowered by > 15%. The analysis of the antioxidant enzymes also indicated a marked reduction in the specific activities of catalase and ascorbate peroxidase under both 75 and 50% FC compared to the respective controls. Additionally, the hydrogel promoted the uptake of phosphate by sunflower roots. These results implied that the developed biodegradable hydrogel could be effectively applied as a soil additive to alleviate drought stress on crops.

High-performance green electronic substrate employing flexible and transparent cellulose films

Today's widely used and rapidly updated electronic substrates are composed of petroleum-based polymers, but the resulting electronic waste (such as Dioxin, oxole, PCBs, etc.) will cause massive harm to the environment and human body. Therefore, we report an effective approach for fabricating recyclable and high-performance cellulose films as green electronic substrates by calendering. The crosslinking between CH and CHCH in cellulose modified by maleic anhydride led to the in-situ formation of a chemical crosslinking network, and hydrogen bonds acted as a sacrificial physical crosslinking network. The dual crosslinked cellulose film exhibits high strength (120.56 MPa), improved elongation (increased by 263%), and outstanding thermal stability (thermal decomposition temperature is 311 °C). Further, the film has been successfully used as a substrate for biomass sensor and realized apparent responses to changes. The scientific strategy paves the way for the large-scale fabrication of high-performance cellulose films and simultaneously promotes green electronic substrates' industrialization.

One-pot fabrication of reusable hybrid sorbents for quick removal of oils from wastewater

The leaking of harmful organic liquids into water resources has had hazardous impacts on living organisms. Herein, we demonstrated the fabrication of hybrid sorbents using s-PPG and organosilane cross-linker. The final product exhibited high, quick absorption capacity, great reusability and excellent oil separation performance from wastewater. They also selectively absorb different oils from the bottom and surface of water without any capacity change, even in harsh conditions like wavy and sub-zero water environment. Experimental results demonstrated that the obtained sorbents are efficient to successfully remove oil from water surface, even at harsh conditions, and float on the water surface before and after oil sorption without any capacity loss and structural change. Simple preparation by avoiding time consuming multistep process, initiator, solvent, activator free reaction medium, high and selective sorption characteristics and great reusability could make these sorbents a promising candidate for the cleaning of water from harmful organic liquids, by absorbing them.

Superoleophilic and Flexible Thermoplastic Polymer Nanofiber Aerogels for Removal of Oils and Organic Solvents

Chemical cross-linked poly(vinyl alcohol-co-ethylene) (EVOH) nanofiber aerogels (NFAs) were fabricated employing an economical and facile freeze-drying process. The manufactured chemical cross-linking nanofiber aerogel was successfully confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, and X-ray diffraction. The resulting aerogels showed high porosity (>99%), superior elasticity, elastic durability, high hydrophobicity, and superoleophilicity without any other hydrophobic modification. The cross-linked EVOH NFAs exhibited excellent absorption capacity (ranging from 45 to 102 times their own weight) when exposed to various oils and organic solvents, which was observed to be higher than that for most sorbents reported in the literature. Consequently, it is envisaged that the cross-linked EVOH NFA would play an important role in many fields of pollution removal.
