Tuning the softness of poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) nanocomposite hydrogels through the addition of PEG coated nanoparticles

HYPOTHESIS

In nanocomposites, several factors govern the enhancement of properties when a nanofiller is added into a polymer matrix. Previously, our group have demonstrated that stabilizing nanoparticles improves the dispersion of nanoparticles in a hydrogel, but their effect on viscoelastic properties remain unclear. We hypothesized that coating the nanoparticles will block matrix-nanoparticle interactions, which would then affect the transfer of stress when the hydrogel is subjected to stress.

EXPERIMENT

To this end, we investigated the effects that nanofillers coated with polyethylene glycol (PEG) of variable molar mass have on the properties of physical hydrogels made from poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate). PEG with molar masses of 6, 20, and 35 kDa were used at different concentrations and the viscoelastic properties of the resulting hydrogels were studied and compared with control hydrogels with and without nanofillers.

FINDINGS

The coated nanofiller resulted in enhanced dispersion stabilization as the molar mass and concentration of the PEG increased. However, there were noticeable changes in viscoelastic properties. In general, the nanocomposite hydrogels exhibited reduced shear modulus, greater creep, and more accentuated shear thinning behaviour. These effects were attributed to hindered matrix-nanoparticle interactions because of the PEG coating, an increased slippage of the PHEMA chains as well as a plasticizing effect.

Materials engineering, processing, and device application of hydrogel nanocomposites

Hydrogels are widely implemented as key materials in various biomedical applications owing to their soft, flexible, hydrophilic, and quasi-solid nature. Recently, however, new material properties over those of bare hydrogels have been sought for novel applications. Accordingly, hydrogel nanocomposites, i.e., hydrogels converged with nanomaterials, have been proposed for the functional transformation of conventional hydrogels. The incorporation of suitable nanomaterials into the hydrogel matrix allows the hydrogel nanocomposite to exhibit multi-functionality in addition to the biocompatible feature of the original hydrogel. Therefore, various hydrogel composites with nanomaterials, including nanoparticles, nanowires, and nanosheets, have been developed for diverse purposes, such as catalysis, environmental purification, bio-imaging, sensing, and controlled drug delivery. Furthermore, novel technologies for the patterning of such hydrogel nanocomposites into desired shapes have been developed. The combination of such material engineering and processing technologies has enabled the hydrogel nanocomposite to become a key soft component of electronic, electrochemical, and biomedical devices. We herein review the recent research trend in the field of hydrogel nanocomposites, particularly focusing on materials engineering, processing, and device applications. Furthermore, the conclusions are presented with the scope of future research outlook, which also includes the current technical limitations.

Recent Trends in Mussel-Inspired Catechol-Containing Polymers (A Review)

Syntheses and applications of mussel-inspired polymeric materials have gained a foothold in research in recent years. Mussel-inspired chemistry coupled to Michael addition and Schiff’s base reactions was the key success for this intensive research. Unequivocally, The basic building brick of these materials is catechol-containing moiety, namely, 3,4-dihydroxyphenyl-L-alanine (L-DOPA or DOPA) and dopamine (DA). These catechol-based units within the chemical structure of the material ensure chiefly its adhesive characteristic to adherends of different natures. The newly-made catechol-bearing polymeric materials exhibit unique features, implying their importance in several uses and applications. Technology advent is being advantaged with these holdfast mussel protein-like materials. This review sheds light into the recent advances of such mussel-inspired materials for their adhesion capacity to several substrata of different natures, and for their applications mainly in antifouling coatings and nanoparticles technology.
