Abstract
Molecular photoswitches undergo a structural transformation upon photoexcitation to interconvert between two or more stable forms. In some cases, the structural rearrangement involves the transition between ring-open and ring-closed forms. In this work, we develop simple guidelines for the design of organic molecules able to undergo photochemical electrocyclization, using electronic structure calculations on dithienylethene (DTE)-based compounds. We conclude that the ability to photocyclize can be predicted from the localization and symmetry of frontier molecular orbitals. These ideas are based on the Woodward-Hoffmann rules but go beyond them, allowing us to address a more general family of chromophores. Our methodology has been experimentally validated in a novel series of quinoline-based DTEs, where the ability for photocyclization depends on specific chemical modifications. We use the DTE scaffold as the workhorse model in our study; however, these simple yet powerful guidelines are expected to be generally valid to guide the design of other diarylethenes.

Abstract
Homogeneous transition metal catalysis is a constantly developing field in chemical sciences. A growing interest in this area is photoswitchable catalysis, which pursues in situ modulation of catalyst activity through noninvasive light irradiation. Phosphorus ligands are excellent targets to accomplish this goal by introducing photoswitchable moieties; however, only a limited number of examples have been reported so far. In this work, we have developed a series of palladium complexes capable of catalyzing the Stille coupling reaction that contain photoisomerizable phosphine ligands based on dithienylethene switches. Incorporation of electron-withdrawing substituents into these dithienylethene moieties allows variation of the electron density on the phosphorus atom of the ligands upon light irradiation, which in turn leads to a modulation of the catalytic properties of the formed complexes and their activity in a model Stille coupling reaction. These results are supported by theoretical computations, which show that the energy barriers for the rate-determining steps of the catalytic cycle decrease when the photoswitchable phosphine ligands are converted to their closed state.

"On-The-Fly" Non-Adiabatic Dynamics Simulations on Photoinduced Ring-Closing Reaction of a Nucleoside-Based Diarylethene Photoswitch. Molecules 2021; 26:molecules26092724. Abstract
Nucleoside-based diarylethenes are emerging as an especial class of photochromic compounds that have potential applications in regulating biological systems using noninvasive light with high spatio-temporal resolution. However, relevant microscopic photochromic mechanisms at atomic level of these novel diarylethenes remain to be explored. Herein, we have employed static electronic structure calculations (MS-CASPT2//M06-2X, MS-CASPT2//SA-CASSCF) in combination with non-adiabatic dynamics simulations to explore the related photoinduced ring-closing reaction of a typical nucleoside-based diarylethene photoswitch, namely, PS-IV. Upon excitation with UV light, the open form PS-IV can be excited to a spectroscopically bright S1 state. After that, the molecule relaxes to the conical intersection region within 150 fs according to the barrierless relaxed scan of the C1–C6 bond, which is followed by an immediate deactivation to the ground state. The conical intersection structure is very similar to the ground state transition state structure which connects the open and closed forms of PS-IV, and therefore plays a crucial role in the photochromism of PS-IV. Besides, after analyzing the hopping structures, we conclude that the ring closing reaction cannot complete in the S1 state alone since all the C1–C6 distances of the hopping structures are larger than 2.00 Å. Once hopping to the ground state, the molecules either return to the original open form of PS-IV or produce the closed form of PS-IV within 100 fs, and the ring closing quantum yield is estimated to be 56%. Our present work not only elucidates the ultrafast photoinduced pericyclic reaction of the nucleoside-based diarylethene PS-IV, but can also be helpful for the future design of novel nucleoside-based diarylethenes with better performance.

Abstract
Two typical molecular switches of spiropyran (SP) and benzoxazine (OX) were fused by sharing an indole to achieve a new dual-addressable molecular switch (SP-OX-NO2 ). Through proper molecular modification with NO2 , the transformation from merocyanine (MC) to ring-closed SP or ring-closed OX can be controlled separately with visible light or base stimuli in solution, respectively, and these processes are verified by UV-vis and NMR spectroscopy as well as control experiments. The cis-merocyanine (cis-MC) form is involved in the basochromic process in solution. DFT calculation suggests that the bidirectional switching property of the fused SP-OX molecular switch can be controlled separately, when the OX isomer is more stable than the deprotonated SP isomer. Because of the significant color variations in solution, the simple dual-addressable switch has been further successfully applied to construct a multicolor reversible display on paper.

Abstract
Dithienylethenes (DTEs) can be assembled to form supramolecular multiphotochromic systems that are highly functional molecular architectures of potential interest for building complex optoelectronic devices. Yet even simple DTE dimers relying on an organic linker may suffer from a partial photoactivity, i.e., only one of the two switches does isomerise. Experimentally, this limited photochromism has been attributed to an excited state energy transfer (EET) between the two DTEs of the multimer; this EET taking place instead of the desired photoinduced cyclisation of the DTE. However, no clear evidences of this phenomenon have been provided so far. In this work we propose the first rationalisation of this potential parasite photoinduced event using a computational approach based on Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) for the calculation of the electronic coupling in DTE dimers. Besides quantifying EET in several systems, we dissect the role of through-bond and through-space mechanisms on this process and clarify their dependence on both the nature and length of the bridge separating the two photochromes. The theoretical data obtained in this framework are in full agreement with the experimental outcomes and pave the way toward a molecular design of coupled, yet fully functionals, DTE-based multiswitches.
