Well-defined silica supported aluminum hydride: another step towards the utopian single site dream?

Molecular Alumo- and Gallosilicate Hydrides Functionalized with Terminal M(NR2)3 and Bridging M(NR2)2 (M = Ti, Zr, Hf; R = Me, Et) Moieties

A general synthetic strategy for the systematic synthesis of group 4 MIV heterometallic complexes LMIII(H)(μ-O)Si(μ-O)(OtBu)2}nMIV(NR2)4-n (L = {[HC{C(Me)N(2,6-iPr2C6H3)}2; MIII = Al or Ga; n = 1 or 2; MIV = Ti, Zr, Hf; R = Me, Et), based on alumo- or gallosilicate hydride ligands bearing a Si-OH moiety, is presented. The challenging isolation of these metalloligands involved two strategies. On the one hand, the acid-base reaction of LAlH2 with (HO)2Si(OtBu)2 yielded LAlH(μ-O)Si(OH)(OtBu)2 (1), while on the other hand, the oxidative addition of (HO)2Si(OtBu)2 to LGa produced the gallium analog (2). These metalloligands successfully stabilized two hydrogen atoms with different acid-base properties (MIII-H and SiO-H) in the same molecule. Reactivity studies between 1 and 2 and group 4 amides MIV(NR2)4 (MIV = Ti, Zr, Hf; R = Me, Et) and tuning the reactions conditions and stoichiometry led to isolation and structural characterization of heterometallic complexes 3-11 with a 1:1 or 2:1 metalloligand/MIV ratio. Notably, some of these molecular heterometallic silicate complexes stabilize for the first time terminal (O3Si-O-)MIV(NR2)3 moieties known from single-site silica-grafted species. Furthermore, the aluminum-containing heterometallic complexes possess Al-H vibrational energies similar to those reported for modified alumina surfaces, which makes them potentially suitable models for the proposed MIV species grafted onto silica/alumina surfaces with hydride and dihydride architectures.

MAO- and Borate-Free Activating Supports for Group 4 Metallocene and Post-Metallocene Catalysts of α-Olefin Polymerization and Oligomerization

Modern industry of advanced polyolefins extensively uses Group 4 metallocene and post-metallocene catalysts. High-throughput polyolefin technologies demand the use of heterogeneous catalysts with a given particle size and morphology, high thermal stability, and controlled productivity. Conventional Group 4 metal single-site heterogeneous catalysts require the use of high-cost methylalumoxane (MAO) or perfluoroaryl borate activators. However, a number of inorganic phases, containing highly acidic Lewis and Brønsted sites, are able to activate Group 4 metal pre-catalysts using low-cost and affordable alkylaluminums. In the present review, we gathered comprehensive information on MAO- and borate-free activating supports of different types and discussed the surface nature and chemistry of these phases, examples of their use in the polymerization of ethylene and α-olefins, and prospects of the further development for applications in the polyolefin industry.

Deep reaction network exploration at a heterogeneous catalytic interface

Characterizing the reaction energies and barriers of reaction networks is central to catalyst development. However, heterogeneous catalytic surfaces pose several unique challenges to automatic reaction network characterization, including large sizes and open-ended reactant sets, that make ad hoc network construction the current state-of-the-art. Here, we show how automated network exploration algorithms can be adapted to the constraints of heterogeneous systems using ethylene oligomerization on silica-supported single-site Ga³⁺ as a model system. Using only graph-based rules for exploring the network and elementary constraints based on activation energy and size for identifying network terminations, a comprehensive reaction network is generated and validated against standard methods. The algorithm (re)discovers the Ga-alkyl-centered Cossee-Arlman mechanism that is hypothesized to drive major product formation while also predicting several new pathways for producing alkanes and coke precursors. These results demonstrate that automated reaction exploration algorithms are rapidly maturing towards general purpose capability for exploratory catalytic applications.

Grafting of a new bis-silylamido aluminum species on silica: insight from solid-state NMR into interactions with the surface

The new bisamido aluminum species [AlCl{N(SiMe3)2}2(THF)] (1) was prepared and fully characterized by 27Al and 35Cl solid-state NMR, along with X-ray diffraction studies. 1 was grafted on silica partially dehydroxylated at 700 °C, affording silica-supported Al species. The resulting material (2) was characterized by IR, elemental analysis and 1H, 13C and 27Al solid-state MAS NMR. The 1D and 2D 27Al MAS NMR studies showed the occurrence of two types of species, where the Al center adopts a tetracoordinated coordination sphere, with as an additional coordinated Lewis base, either a THF ligand or a silica-surface siloxane moiety. DFT calculations allowed understanding the grafting mechanism and the spectroscopic properties of the material.

Exploiting the interactions between the ruthenium Hoveyda-Grubbs catalyst and Al-modified mesoporous silica: the case of SBA15 vs. KCC-1

2^nd generation Hoveyda–Grubbs catalyst immobilized onto well-ordered 2D hexagonal (SBA15) and 3D fibrous (KCC-1) mesostructured silica displaying tetra-coordinated Al–H via Surface Organometallic Chemistry (SOMC).

Immobilization of the 2^nd generation Hoveyda–Grubbs catalyst HG-II onto well-ordered 2D hexagonal (SBA15) and 3D fibrous (KCC-1) mesostructured silica, which contained tetra-coordinated Al, has been investigated through the Surface Organometallic Chemistry (SOMC) methodology. The main interest of this study lies in the peculiarity of the silica supports, which display a well-defined tetrahedral aluminum hydride site displaying a strong Lewis acid character, [( Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> Si–O–Si Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> )( Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> Si–O–)₂Al–H]. The resulting supported Hoveyda–Grubbs catalysts have been fully characterized by advanced solid state characterization techniques (FT-IR, ¹H and ¹³C solid state NMR, DNP-SENS, EF-TEM…). Together with DFT calculations, the immobilization of HG-II does not occur through the formation of a covalent bond between the complex and the Al-modified mesoporous silica as expected, but through an Al···Cl–[Ru]-coordination. It is not surprising that in functionalized olefin metathesis of diethyldiallyl malonate, DEDAM (liquid phase), leaching of the catalyst is observed which is not the case in non-functionalized olefin metathesis of propene (gas phase). Besides, the results obtained in propene metathesis with HG-II immobilized either on SBA15 (d_pore = 6 nm) or KCC-1 (d_pore = 4 or 8 nm) highlight the importance of the accessibility of the catalytic site. Therefore, we demonstrate that KCC-1 is a promising and suitable 3D mesoporous support to overcome the diffusion of reactants into the porous network of heterogeneous catalysts.

SOMC grafting of vanadium oxytriisopropoxide (VO(OiPr)3) on dehydroxylated silica; analysis of surface complexes and thermal restructuring mechanism

VO(OⁱPr)₃ was grafted on highly dehydroxylated silica by a surface organometallic chemistry approach and its thermal evolution was analyzed with support of DFT calculations.

Solid-state NMR of quadrupolar nuclei for investigations into supported organometallic catalysts: scope and frontiers

The scope, limitations and outlooks of half-integer quadrupolar nuclei NMR as applied to supported catalysts characterization are discussed.

Proton detection of MAS solid-state NMR spectra of half-integer quadrupolar nuclei

Fast magic angle spinning (MAS) and proton detection has found widespread application to enhance the sensitivity of solid-state NMR experiments with spin-1/2 nuclei such as ¹³C, ¹⁵N and ²⁹Si, however, this approach is not yet routinely applied to half-integer quadrupolar nuclei. Here we have investigated the feasibility of using fast MAS and proton detection to enhance the sensitivity of solid-state NMR experiments with half-integer quadrupolar nuclei. The previously described dipolar hetero-nuclear multiple quantum correlation (D-HMQC) and dipolar refocused insensitive nuclei enhanced by polarization transfer (D-RINEPT) pulse sequences were used for proton detection of half-integer quadrupolar nuclei. Quantitative comparisons of signal-to-noise ratios and the sensitivity of proton detected D-HMQC and D-RINEPT and direct detection spin echo and quadrupolar Carr-Purcell Meiboom-Gill (QCPMG) solid-state NMR spectra, demonstrate that one dimensional proton detected experiments can provide sensitivity similar to or exceeding that obtainable with direct detection QCPMG experiments. 2D D-HMQC and D-RINEPT experiments provide less sensitivity than QCPMG experiments but proton detected 2D hetero-nuclear correlation solid-state NMR spectra of half-integer nuclei can still be acquired in about the same time as a 1D spin echo spectrum. Notably, the rarely used D-RINEPT pulse sequence is found to provide similar, or better sensitivity than D-HMQC in some cases. Proton detected D-RINEPT benefits from the short longitudinal relaxation times (T₁) normally associated with half-integer quadrupolar nuclei, it can be combined with existing signal enhancement methods for quadrupolar nuclei, and t₁-noise in the indirect dimension can easily be removed by pre-saturation of the ¹H nuclei. The rapid acquisition of proton detected 2D HETCOR solid-state NMR spectra of a range of half-integer quadrupolar nuclei such as ¹⁷O, ²⁷Al, ³⁵Cl and ⁷¹Ga is demonstrated.

Preparation of monopodal and bipodal aluminum surface species by selective protonolysis of highly reactive [AlH3(NMe2Et)] on silica

The reaction of [AlH₃(NMe₂Et)] with silica treated at 200 °C leads to a well-defined bipodal aluminum hydride while with silica treated at 700 °C a mixture of mono- and bi-podal aluminum hydrides is obtained.
