Metal-only Lewis pairs between group 10 metals and Tl(i) or Ag(i): insights into the electronic consequences of Z-type ligand binding

Trigonal-Bipyramidal Pt(0) and Pd(0) Anions

Anionic Pt(0) and Pd(0) complexes with unprecedented trigonal-bipyramidal geometry have been prepared and thoroughly characterized by experimental and computational means. Coordination of a σ-acceptor borane moiety supported by three phosphine buttresses enhances the electrophilicity of M(0) and triggers the binding of soft anions (X = Br, I, CN).

Ladder-like heteropolynuclear assemblies via cyanido bridges and platinum(II)-thallium(I) bonds: structural and photophysical properties

We describe the mononuclear anionic cyanido-pentafluorophenyl complexes, (NBu4)[Pt(C^N)(C6F5)(CN)] [C^N = 7,8-benzoquinolate (bzq) 1, 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)pyridinate (dfppy) 2] and the heteropolynuclear derivatives [{Pt(C^N)(C6F5)(CN)}Tl] (C^N = bzq 3, dfppy 4). These complexes were synthesized via a two-step modular synthesis by reaction of the corresponding potassium salts K[Pt(C^N)(C6F5)(CN)], prepared in situ from [Pt(C^N)(C6F5)(DMSO)] and KCN in acetone/H2O, with TlPF6. The structures of {[Pt(bzq)(C6F5)(CN)Tl]·THF}n (3·THF)n and [{Pt(dfppy)(C6F5)(CN)}Tl]4·dioxane [4]4·dioxane, determined by X-ray crystallography, confirm the presence of Pt(II)-Tl(I) bonds [2.9795(6)-3.0736(3) Å], but in the dfppy complex, the incorporation of dioxane, causes a significant structural change. Thus, whereas [3·THF]n achieves a bent-ladder shape extended double chain Tl⋯[Pt⋯Tl]n⋯Pt supported by lateral bridging [Pt](μ-CN)[Tl] ligands, [4]4·dioxane is formed by discrete Pt4Tl4 rectangular aggregates stabilized by [Pt](μ-CN)[Tl] and Pt⋯Tl bonds, which are connected by dioxane bridging molecules through Tl⋯O(dioxane) additional contacts. Solid state emissions are redshifted compared with the mononuclear derivatives 1 and 2 and have been assigned, with the support of theoretical calculations on Pt4Tl4 models, to metal-metal'-to-ligand charge transfer (3MM'LCT [d/s σ*(Pt, Tl) → π*(C^N)]) for 3 and mixed 3MM'LCT/3IL for 4. In fluid THF solution, the complexes are not emissive. At 77 K, 3 and 4 exhibit bright emissions attributed to the formation of bimetallic [{Pt(C^N)(C6F5)(CN)}Tl(THF)x], and anionic [Pt(C^N)(C6F5)(CN)]- fragments. Furthermore, both 3 and 4 exhibit a reversible mechanochromism with a red shift of the emissions upon crushing, suggesting some degree of shortening of metal-metal separation. Finally, complex 3 shows solvatochromic behavior with color/luminescence changes by treatment with a drop of MeOH, CH2Cl2, THF or Et2O, with shifts from 583 in 3-MeOH to 639 nm in 3-THF. However, 4 only demonstrates a bathochromic response to MeOH.

Exploring Spin-Orbit Effects in a [Cu6Tl]+ Nanocluster Featuring an Uncommon Tl-H Interaction

Reaction of [CuH(PPh3)]6 with 1 equiv. of Tl(OTf) results in formation of [Cu6TlH6(PPh3)6][OTf] ([1]OTf]), which can be isolated in good yields. Variable-temperature 1H NMR spectroscopy, in combination with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, confirms the presence of a rare Tl-H orbital interaction. According to DFT, the 1H chemical shift of the Tl-adjacent hydride ligands of [1]+ includes 7.7 ppm of deshielding due to spin-orbit effects from the heavy Tl atom. This study provides valuable new insights into a rare class of metal hydrides, given that [1][OTf] is only the third isolable species reported to contain a Tl-H interaction.

Dinitrogen Complexes of Cobalt(-I) Supported by Rare-Earth Metal-Based Metalloligands

Sequential reactions of heptadentate phosphinoamine LH₃ with rare-earth metal tris-alkyl precursor (Me₃SiCH₂)₃Ln(THF)₂ (Ln = Sc, Lu, Yb, Y, Gd) and a low-valent cobalt complex (Ph₃P)₃CoI afforded rare-earth metal-supported cobalt iodide complexes. Reduction of these iodide complexes under N₂ allowed the isolation of the first series of dinitrogen complexes of Co(-I) featuring dative Co(-I) → Ln (Ln = Sc, Lu, Yb, Y, Gd) bonding interactions. These compounds were characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, electrochemistry, and computational studies. The correlation of N-N vibrational frequencies with the pK_a of [Ln(H₂O)₆]³⁺ showed that strongest activation of N₂ was achieved with the least Lewis acidic Gd(III) ion. Interestingly, these Ln-Co-N₂ complexes catalyzed silylation of N₂ in the presence of KC₈ and Me₃SiCl with turnover numbers (TONs) up to 16, where the lutetium-supported Co(-I) complex showed the highest activity within the series. The role of the Lewis acidic Ln(III) was crucial to achieve catalytic turnovers and tunable reactivity toward N₂ functionalization.

A highly constrained cis-dihydride platinum complex trapped by cooperative gold/platinum dihydrogen activation

A series of Au(i)/Pt(0) combinations that behave as bimetallic frustrated Lewis pairs activates dihydrogen in a cooperative manner. The steric bulk of the terphenyl phosphines that stabilize both fragments allows for the isolation of a rather unique and highly distorted cis-type dihydride platinum(ii) structure.

We have trapped a unique square planar cis-dihydride structure, of relevance for many catalytic transformations, through a bimetallic FLP-based approach.

Phosphinoamido Ligand Supported Heterobimetallic Rare-Earth Metal-Palladium Complexes: Versatile Structures and Redox Reactivities

Thallium(I) Tropolonates: Synthesis, Structure, Spectral Characteristics, and Antimicrobial Activity Compared to Lead(II) and Bismuth(III) Analogues

Synthesis, single-crystal X-ray determination diffraction and FT-IR, NMR (¹H, ¹³C, ¹⁹F and ²⁰⁵Tl), UV–vis, and luminescence spectra characteristics were described for series of thallium(I) compounds: thallium(I) triflate (Tl(OTf)), 1:1 co-crystals of thallium(I) triflate and tropolone (Htrop), Tl(OTf)·Htrop, as well as simple thallium(I) chelates: Tl(trop) (1), Tl(5-metrop) (2), Tl(hino) (3), with Htrop, 5-methyltropolone (5-meHtrop), 4-isopropyltropolone (hinokitiol, Hhino), respectively, and additionally more complex {Tl@[Tl(hino)]₆}(OTf) (4) compound. Comparison of their antimicrobial activity with selected lead(II) and bismuth(III) analogs and free ligands showed that only bismuth(III) complexes demonstrated significant antimicrobial activity, from two- to fivefold larger than the free ligands.

Understanding, Modulating, and Leveraging Transannular M → Z Interactions

Density functional theory calculations have been performed on metallatranes featuring a group 13 elements at the bridgehead position to understand the factors that influence the nature of the M···Z (M = Fe, Co, Ni; Z = Al, Ga, In) interaction present in these complexes and the resultant reactivity at the metal center. The strength of the M···Z interaction increases with the increase in the size and polarizability of the bridgehead group 13 elements. The calculated reaction free energies (ΔG° values) for binding of different Lewis bases to the metallatranes are found to be significantly more exergonic for the larger In(III) ions. Quantum theory of atoms in molecules calculations reveal the covalent nature of the M···Z interactions, while the EDA-NOCV analysis indicates the strong binding ability of these metallatranes not only to different σ-donor and π-acceptor ligands but also to relatively inert species, such as N₂.

Three-Coordinate Pd(0) with Rare-Earth Metalloligands: Synergetic CO Activation and Double P-C Bond Cleavage-Formation Reactions

Metalation of β-diketiminato rare-earth metal complexes L^nacnacLn(PhNCH₂PPh₂)₂ (Ln = Y, Yb, Lu) with (COD)Pd(CH₂SiMe₃)₂ afforded three-coordinate Pd(0) complexes supported by two sterically less bulky phosphines and a Pd → Ln dative interaction. The Pd(0) center is prone to ligation with isonitrile and CO; in the latter case, the insertion of a second CO with the Y-N bond was assisted via a precoordination of CO on the Pd(0) center, which led to the formation of an anionic Pd(0) carbamoyl. The reaction of the Pd-Y complex with iodobenzene showed a remarkable double P-C bond cleavage-formation pathway within the heterobimetallic Pd-Y core to afford (Ph₃P)₂PdI(Ph), imine PhNCH₂, and a β-diketiminato yttrium diiodide. In the related reaction of L^nacnacY(PhNCH₂PPh₂)₂ with (Ph₃P)₂PdI(Ph), the P-C bond cleavage following with a N-C bond formation was observed. Computational studies revealed a synergetic bimetallic mechanism for these reactions.

Metal-only Lewis Pairs of Rhodium with s, p and d-Block Metals

Metal-only Lewis pairs (MOLPs) in which the two metal fragments are solely connected by a dative M→M bond represent privileged architectures to acquire fundamental understanding of bimetallic bonding. This has important implications in many catalytic processes or supramolecular systems that rely on synergistic effects between two metals. However, a systematic experimental/computational approach on a well-defined class of compounds is lacking. Here we report a family of MOLPs constructed around the RhI precursor [(η5 -C5 Me5 )Rh(PMe3 )2 ] (1) with a series of s, p and d-block metals, mostly from the main group elements, and investigate their bonding by computational means. Among the new MOLPs, we have structurally characterized those formed by dative bonding between 1 and MgMeBr, AlMe3 , GeCl2 , SnCl2 , ZnMe2 and Zn(C6 F5 )2, as well as spectroscopically identified the ones resulting from coordination to MBArF (M=Na, Li; BArF - =[B(C6 H2 -3,5-(CF3 )2 )4 ]- ) and CuCl. Some of these compounds represent unique examples of bimetallic structures, such as the first unambiguous cases of Rh→Mg dative bonding or base-free rhodium bound germylene and stannylene species. Multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, including 103 Rh NMR, is used to probe the formation of Rh→M bonds. A comprehensive theoretical analysis of those provides clear trends. As anticipated, greater bond covalency is found for the more electronegative acids, whereas ionic character dominates for the least electronegative nuclei, though some degree of electron sharing is identified in all cases.

Evidence for Genuine Bimetallic Frustrated Lewis Pair Activation of Dihydrogen with Gold(I)/Platinum(0) Systems

A joint experimental/computational effort to elucidate the mechanism of dihydrogen activation by a gold(I)/platinum(0) metal-only frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) is described herein. The drastic effects on H₂ activation derived from subtle ligand modifications have also been investigated. The importance of the balance between bimetallic adduct formation and complete frustration has been interrogated, providing for the first time evidence for genuine metal-only FLP reactivity in solution. The origin of a strong inverse kinetic isotopic effect has also been clarified, offering further support for the proposed bimetallic FLP-type cleavage of dihydrogen.

Cooperative activation of X-H (X = H, C, O, N) bonds by a Pt(0)/Ag(i) metal-only Lewis pair

Metal-only Lewis pairs made of Pt(0)/Ag(i) combinations have been previously reported, but their cooperative reactivity remains unexplored. Here we demonstrate that these systems are capable of synergistically activating a wide variety of X-H (X = H, C, O, N) bonds, including those in dihydrogen, alkynes, water and ammonia.

Thermodynamic and kinetic studies of H2 and N2 binding to bimetallic nickel-group 13 complexes and neutron structure of a Ni(η2-H2) adduct

Binding energies for H₂ and N₂ at nickel become more exergonic for the larger group 13 sigma-accepting supports.

Understanding H₂ binding and activation is important in the context of designing transition metal catalysts for many processes, including hydrogenation and the interconversion of H₂ with protons and electrons. This work reports the first thermodynamic and kinetic H₂ binding studies for an isostructural series of first-row metal complexes: NiML, where M = Al (1), Ga (2), and In (3), and L = [N(o-(NCH₂PⁱPr₂)C₆H₄)₃]^3–. Thermodynamic free energies (ΔG°) and free energies of activation (ΔG^‡) for binding equilibria were obtained via variable-temperature ³¹P NMR studies and lineshape analysis. The supporting metal exerts a large influence on the thermodynamic favorability of both H₂ and N₂ binding to Ni, with ΔG° values for H₂ binding found to span nearly the entire range of previous reports. The non-classical H₂ adduct, (η²-H₂)NiInL (3-H₂), was structurally characterized by single-crystal neutron diffraction—the first such study for a Ni(η²-H₂) complex or any d¹⁰ M(η²-H₂) complex. UV-Vis studies and TD-DFT calculations identified specific electronic structure perturbations of the supporting metal which poise NiML complexes for small-molecule binding. ETS-NOCV calculations indicate that H₂ binding primarily occurs via H–H σ-donation to the Ni 4p_z-based LUMO, which is proposed to become energetically accessible as the Ni(0)→M(iii) dative interaction increases for the larger M(iii) ions. Linear free-energy relationships are discussed, with the activation barrier for H₂ binding (ΔG^‡) found to decrease proportionally for more thermodynamically favorable equilibria. The ΔG° values for H₂ and N₂ binding to NiML complexes were also found to be more exergonic for the larger M(iii) ions.

Bimetallic nickel-lutetium complexes: tuning the properties and catalytic hydrogenation activity of the Ni site by varying the Lu coordination environment

We present three heterobimetallic complexes containing an isostructural nickel center and a lutetium ion in varying coordination environments. The bidentate ⁱPr₂PCH₂NHPh and nonadentate (ⁱPr₂PCH₂NHAr)₃tacn ligands were used to prepare the Lu metalloligands, Lu(ⁱPr₂PCH₂NPh)₃ (1) and Lu{(ⁱPr₂PCH₂NAr)₃tacn} (2), respectively. Reaction of Ni(COD)₂ (where COD is 1,5-cyclooctadiene) and 1 afforded NiLu(ⁱPr₂PCH₂NPh)₃ (3), with a Lu coordination number (CN) of 4 and a Ni-Lu distance, d(Ni-Lu), of 2.4644(2) Å. Complex 3 can further bind THF to form 3-THF, increasing both the Lu CN to 5 and d(Ni-Lu) to 2.5989(4) Å. On the other hand, incorporation of Ni(0) into 2 provides NiLu{(ⁱPr₂PCH₂NAr)₃tacn} (4), in which the Lu coordination environment is more saturated (CN = 6), and the d(Ni-Lu) is substantially elongated at 2.9771(5) Å. Cyclic voltammetry of the three Ni-Lu complexes shows an overall ∼410 mV shift in the Ni(0/I) redox couple, suggesting tunability of the Ni electronics across the series. Computational studies reveal polarized bonding interactions between the Ni 3d _{z ²} (major) and the Lu 5d _{z ²} (minor) orbitals, where the percentage of Lu character increases in the order: 4 (6.0% Lu 5d _{z ²} ) < 3-THF (8.5%) < 3 (9.3%). All three Ni-Lu complexes bind H₂ at low temperatures (-30 to -80 °C) and are competent catalysts for styrene hydrogenation. Complex 3 outperforms 4 with a four-fold faster rate. Additionally, adding increasing THF equivalents to 3, which would favor build-up of 3-THF, decreases the rate. We propose that altering the coordination sphere of the Lu support can influence the resulting properties and catalytic activity of the active Ni(0) metal center.

Modulating the σ-Accepting Properties of an Antimony Z-type Ligand via Anion Abstraction: Remote-Controlled Reactivity of the Coordinated Platinum Atom

In search of ligand platforms, which can be used to remotely control the catalytic activity of a transition metal, we have investigated the coordination noninnocence of ambiphilic L₂/Z-type ligands containing a trifluorostiborane unit as a Lewis acid. The known dichlorostiboranyl platinum complex (( o-(Ph₂P)C₆H₄)₂SbCl₂)PtCl (1) reacts with TlF in the presence of acetonitrile (MeCN) and cyclohexyl isocyanide (CyNC) to afford the trifluorostiborane platinum complexes 2 ((( o-(Ph₂P)C₆H₄)₂SbF₃)Pt-NCMe) and 3 ((( o-(Ph₂P)C₆H₄)₂SbF₃)Pt-CNCy), respectively. Formation of these complexes, which results from a redistribution of the halide ligands about the dinuclear core, affects the nature of the Pt-Sb bond. The latter switches from covalent in 1 to polar covalent (or dative) in 2 and 3 where the trifluorostiborane moiety engages the platinum center in a Pt → Sb interaction. The polarity of the Pt-Sb bond can be modulated further by abstraction of an antimony-bound fluoride ligand using B(C₆F₅)₃. These reactions afford the cationic complexes [(( o-(Ph₂P)C₆H₄)₂SbF₂)Pt-NCMe]⁺ ([5]⁺) and [(( o-(Ph₂P)C₆H₄)₂SbF₂)Pt-CNCy]⁺ ([6]⁺) which have been isolated as [BF(C₆F₅)₃]^- salts. These complexes possess a highly Lewis acidic difluorostibonium moiety, which exerts an intense draw on the electron density of the platinum center. As a result, the latter becomes significantly more electrophilic. In the case of [5]⁺, which contains a labile acetonitrile ligand, this increased electrophilicity translates into increased carbophilicity as reflected by the ability of this complex to promote enyne cyclization reactions. These results demonstrate that the coordination noninnocence of antimony Z-ligands can be used to adjust the catalytic activity of an adjoining metal center.

Zero-valent isocyanides of nickel, palladium and platinum as transition metal σ-type Lewis bases

Transition metal complexes that contain metal-to-ligand retrodative σ-bonds have become the subject of increasing studies over the last decade. Lewis acidic "Z-type ligands" can modulate the electronic structure of their resultant complexes in a manner distinct from 2e^- donor ligands, and can also engage in cooperative reactivity with a Lewis basic transition metal. In this Feature article, we summarize our work with transition metal isocyanide complexes of group 10 metals that have exploited metal-based σ-type Lewis basicity. While the complexes Ni(CNAr^Mes2)₃, Pd(CNAr^Dipp2)₂ and Pt(CNAr^Dipp2)₂ were initially targeted as analogues to unstable, low-coordinate metal carbonyls, it soon became apparent that these zero-valent metal centers bore appreciable Lewis basic qualities due largely to the enhanced σ-donor/π-acid ratio of isocyanides compared to CO. Detailed spectroscopic and structural studies of metal-only Lewis pairs (MOLPs) formed from these complexes have furthered our understanding of the electronic structure perturbations effected by Z-type ligand binding. In addition, the platinum (boryl)iminomethane (BIM) complex Pt(κ²-N,B-^Cy₂BIM)(CNAr^Dipp2) has illuminated a general ligand design strategy that can engender significant reverse-dative interactions with buttressed Lewis acids, and also has expanded the known scope of cooperative reactivity that can be realized at a transition metal-borane linkage.

Unmasking the Catalytic Activity of a Platinum Complex with a Lewis Acidic, Non-innocent Antimony Ligand

With the view of developing self-activating electrophilic catalysts, we are now investigating complexes with a Lewis acidic moiety in the immediate vicinity of the transition metal center. Toward this end, we have synthesized a platinum complex in which the metal is connected to a Lewis acidic bis(triflato)stiboranyl ligand. This complex, ((o-(Ph₂P)C₆H₄)₂SbOTf₂)PtCl (2), which was obtained by treatment of ((o-(Ph₂P)C₆H₄)₂SbCl₂)PtCl (1) with 2 equiv of AgOTf, is surprisingly air stable. Yet, it promptly reacts with cyclohexylisocyanide to afford the dicationic chlorostibine complex [((o-(Ph₂P)C₆H₄)₂SbCl)PtCNCy]²⁺ ([3]²⁺) as a bis-triflate salt. Formation of [3]²⁺ occurs through abstraction of the platinum-bound chloride ligand by the adjacent Lewis acidic antimony center. This halide migration reaction leads to activation of the platinum center. In turn, 2 behaves as a self-activating catalyst in reactions involving alkynes and readily mediates both enyne cyclization and intramolecular hydroarylation reactions, at room temperature, without addition of a chloride abstracting reagent. These results demonstrate that the coordination non-innocence of antimony ligands can be exploited for the purpose of electrophilic catalysis.

Comparison of nucleophilic- and radical-based routes to the formation of manganese-main group element single bonds

Monomeric Chini-Type Triplatinum Clusters Featuring Dianionic and Radical-Anionic π*-Systems

Owing to their unique topologies and abilities to self-assemble into a variety of extended and aggregated structures, the binary platinum carbonyl clusters [Pt3 (CO)6 ]n (2-) ("Chini clusters") continue to draw significant interest. Herein, we report the isolation and structural characterization of the trinuclear electron-transfer series [Pt3 (μ-CO)3 (CNAr(Dipp2) )3 ](n-) (n=0, 1, 2), which represents a unique set of monomeric Pt3 clusters supported by π-acidic ligands. Spectroscopic, computational, and synthetic investigations demonstrate that the highest-occupied molecular orbitals of the mono- and dianionic clusters consist of a combined π*-framework of the CO and CNAr(Dipp2) ligands, with negligible Pt character. Accordingly, this study provides precedent for an ensemble of carbonyl and isocyanide ligands to function in a redox non-innocent manner.

Coordination- and Redox-Noninnocent Behavior of Ambiphilic Ligands Containing Antimony

Stimulated by applications in catalysis, the chemistry of ambiphilic ligands featuring both donor and acceptor functionalities has experienced substantial growth in the past several years. The unique opportunities in catalysis offered by ambiphilic ligands stem from the ability of their acceptor functionalities to play key roles via metal-ligand cooperation or modulation of the reactivity of the metal center. Ligands featuring group 13 centers, most notably boranes, as their acceptor functionalities have undoubtedly spearheaded these developments, with remarkable results having been achieved in catalytic hydrogenation and hydrosilylation. Motivated by these developments as well as by our fundamental interest in the chemistry of heavy group 15 elements, we became fascinated by the possibility of employing antimony centers as Lewis acids within ambiphilic ligands. The chemistry of antimony-based ligands, most often encountered as trivalent stibines, has historically been considered to mirror that of their lighter phosphorus-based congeners. There is growing evidence, however, that antimony-based ligands may display unique coordination behavior and reactivity. Additionally, despite the diverse Lewis acid and redox chemistry that antimony exhibits, there have been only limited efforts to explore this chemistry within the coordination sphere of a transition metal. By incorporation of antimony into the framework of polydentate ligands in order to enforce the main group metal-transition metal interaction, the effect of redox and coordination events at the antimony center on the structure, electronics, and reactivity of the metal complex may be investigated. This Account describes our group's continuing efforts to probe the coordination behavior, reactivity, and application of ambiphilic ligands incorporating antimony centers. Structural and theoretical studies have established that both Sb(III) and Sb(V) centers in polydentate ligands may act as Z-type ligands toward late transition metals. Although coordinated to a metal, the antimony centers in these complexes retain residual Lewis acidity, as evidenced by their ability to participate in anion binding. Anion binding events at the antimony center have been shown by structural, spectroscopic, and theoretical studies to perturb the antimony-transition metal interaction and in some cases to trigger reactivity at the metal center. Coordinated Sb(III) centers in polydentate ligands have also been found to readily undergo two-electron oxidation, generating strongly Lewis acidic Sb(V) centers in the coordination sphere of the metal. Theoretical studies suggest that oxidation of the coordinated antimony center induces an umpolung of the antimony-metal bond, resulting in depletion of electron density at the metal center. In addition to elucidating the fundamental coordination and redox chemistry of antimony-containing ambiphilic ligands, our work has demonstrated that these unusual behaviors show promise for use in a variety of applications. The ability of coordinated antimony centers to bind anions has been exploited for sensing applications, in which anion coordination at antimony leads to a colorimetric response via a change in the geometry about the metal center.
