Trimetallaborides as starting points for the syntheses of large metal-rich molecular borides and clusters

Manganese-gold-manganese complex with vinylidene and acetylide units

A series of reactions of Cp(CO)2Mn[double bond, length as m-dash]C[double bond, length as m-dash]CHPh with different gold(i) complexes of [Au-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-R]n (R = 4-C5H4N, C6H5) and (tht)AuCl yielded one novel trinuclear MnAuMn cluster. The structure of this cluster can be rationalized as being formed of a vinylidene Mn-Au binuclear and Mn-acetylide fragments, and the binding between those is achieved mainly through the sharing of the electron pair of the single Mn-C σ-bond of an acetylide unit with the gold center.

Facile reactions of gold(i) complexes with tri(tert-butyl)azadiboriridine

Direct structural evidence for group 11 metal-mediated B-B bond activation was obtained from reactions of tri(tert-butyl)azadiboriridine (1) with AuCl(L) complexes. The AuCl(SMe2) reaction afforded [η2-B,B-B(tBu)N(tBu)B(tBu)]AuCl (2) by ligand displacement. More donating phosphines as co-ligands led to B-B bond cleavage accompanied by either halide or L migration to form boron-gold complexes 3 (L = PPh3) and 4 (L = PMe3). A similar product 5, which is isostructural to 4, was obtained by the addition of dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) to 2-4. Complexes 2-5 constitute rare examples of metal complexes bearing two Lewis acidic centres. The effect of the boryl ligand was demonstrated in the formation of a gold(i) complex 6 bearing a 5-membered heterocycle from 3 and tert-butylisonitrile. Plausible reaction mechanisms that led to these complexes and their bonding situation were explored computationally at the DFT level.

Stepwise synthesis of the heterotrimetallic chains [MRu2(dpa)4X2]0/1+ using group 7 to group 12 transition metal ions and [Ru2(dpa)4Cl]

The CoRu₂(dpa)₄Cl₂ (1) (dpa: 2,2'-dipyridylamide) is synthesized by the reaction of Ru₂(OAc)₄Cl and Co₃(dpa)₄Cl₂. By mixing 1 with NH₃, Co²⁺ can be removed and result in the formation of unique binuclear complex 4,0-Ru₂(dpa)₄Cl (2) featuring one coordination pocket supported by free pyridine groups. Hence, this complex can act as an outstanding precursor for the formation of heterotrimetallic chains with MRu₂ cores. A series of M-Ru₂⁵⁺ complexes (M = Co²⁺ (3), Ag⁺ (4), Mn²⁺ (5), Fe²⁺ (6), Zn²⁺ (7), Cd²⁺ (8), Pd²⁺ (9), Rh²⁺ (10), and Ir²⁺ (11)) were prepared and isolated, representing the most complete series of heterotrimetallic chains to date. All these metal string complexes are in a linear trimetallic framework helically wrapped by four dpa^- ligands, characterized by X-ray diffraction measurements. The bending of the trinuclear metal cores in RhRu₂ (10) and IrRu₂ (11) (∠Ru-Ru-Rh: 167.58° and ∠Ru-Ru-Ir: 167.61°) indicates that a heterometallic metal-metal bonds (Ru-Rh; Ru-Ir) are generated. The studies from DFT calculation of 10 and 11 coincide with the experimental results. Furthermore, the MRu₂⁵⁺ distances are regulated by the factors including the bonding force of M-pyridyl and the static repulsion between M and Ru₂⁵⁺ unit. Interestingly, the trend for these distances is in line with that observed in trans-M(py)₄Cl₂ complexes.

Heterometallic boride clusters: synthesis and characterization of butterfly and square pyramidal boride clusters*

A number of heterometallic boride clusters have been synthesized and structurally characterized using various spectroscopic and crystallographic analyses. Thermolysis of [Ru3(CO)12] with [Cp*WH3(B4H8)] (1) yielded [{Cp*W(CO)2}2(μ 4-B){Ru(CO)3}2(μ-H)] (2), [{Cp*W(CO)2}2(μ 5-B){Ru(CO)3}2{Ru(CO)2}(μ-H)] (3), [{Cp*W(CO)2}(μ 5-B){Ru(CO)3}4] (4) and a ditungstaborane cluster [(Cp*W)2B4H8Ru(CO)3] (5) (Cp*=η 5-C5Me5). Compound 2 contains 62 cluster valence-electrons, in which the boron atom occupies the semi-interstitial position of a M4-butterfly core, composed of two tungsten and two ruthenium atoms. Compounds 3 and 4 can be described as hetero-metallic boride clusters that contain 74-cluster valence electrons (cve), in which the boron atom is at the basal position of the M5-square pyramidal geometry. Cluster 5 is analogous to known [(Cp*W)2B5H9] where one of the BH vertices has been replaced by isolobal {Ru(CO)3} fragment. Computational studies with density functional theory (DFT) methods at the B3LYP level have been used to analyze the bonding of the synthesized molecules. The optimized geometries and computed 11B NMR chemical shifts satisfactorily corroborate with the experimental data. All the compounds have been characterized by mass spectrometry, IR, 1H, 11B and 13C NMR spectroscopy, and the structural architectures were unequivocally established by crystallographic analyses of clusters 2–5.
