Reshaping aromatic frameworks: expansion of aromatic system drives metallabenzenoids to metallapentalenes

Reshaping an aromatic framework to generate other skeletons is a challenging issue due to the stabilization energy of aromaticity. Such reconfigurations of aromatics commonly generate non-aromatic products and hardly ever reshape to a different aromatic framework. Herein, we present the transformation of metallaindenols to metallapentalenes and metallaindenes in divergent pathways, converting one aromatic framework to another with an extension of the conjugation framework. The mechanistic study of this transformation shows that phosphorus ligands play different roles in the divergent processes. Further theoretical studies indicate that the expansion of the aromatic system is the driving force promoting this skeletal rearrangement. Our findings offer a new concept and strategy to reshape and construct aromatic compounds.

Oxidation of Iodine to Dihaloiodate(I) Salts of Amines With Hydrogen Peroxides and Their Crystal Structures

Herein we report a general preparation of dihaloiodate salts of heterocyclic amines (tertiary and quaternary) with sterically accessible and hindered nitrogen atom. A number of such compounds were prepared from preformed HICl₂ or HIBr₂ formed in situ by the reaction of corresponding hydrogen halide, iodine and H₂O₂. The salts of 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) and its methylated derivatives, 1,3,5,7-tetraazaadamantane (HMTA), diazabicycloundecene (DBU) and 2,4,6-tri-tert-butylpyridine (TBP) were obtained in excellent yields and their structure was determined by NMR and Raman spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Non-hindered bases such as DABCO, HMTA and DBU formed IX₂⁻ salts, which further decomposed to complexes with interhalogen compounds due to formation of N…X halogen bonds. The dihaloiodiate(I) salts of sterically hindered 2,4,6-tri-tert-butylpyridine were stable. Its dichlorobromate(I) salt was also prepared via a different synthetic method using N-chlorosuccinimide as oxidant.

Convergent Synthesis of 1,4-Dicarbonyl Z-Alkenes through Three-Component Coupling of Alkynes, α-Diazo Sulfonium Triflate, and Water

We report a general protocol for the convergent synthesis of 1,4-dicarbonyl Z-alkenes form alkynes using α-diazo sulfonium triflate and water. The C═O, C═C, and C-H bonds are formed under mild conditions with a wide range of functional groups tolerated. The reaction exhibits excellent Z-selectivity and complete regioselectivity. The resulting 1,4-dicarbonyl Z-alkenes can smoothly undergo follow-up conversion to a variety of heteroaromatic scaffolds. Moreover, the reaction also provides a facile access to the corresponding deuterated Z-alkenes and deuterated heteroarenes with a high level of deuterium incorporation (90-97% D-inc.) by directly using D₂O, thus rendering the method highly valuable. The comprehensive mechanistic studies indicate that a free carbyne radical intermediate is formed via the photocatalytic single electron transfer process, and KH₂PO₄ plays a crucial role in significant improvements on yield and selectivity based on density-functional theory calculations, providing a new direction for radical coupling reactions of diazo compounds.

Electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions of compounds with Craig-Möbius aromaticity

Electrophilic aromatic substitution (EAS) reactions are widely regarded as characteristic reactions of aromatic species, but no comparable reaction has been reported for molecules with Craig-Möbius aromaticity. Here, we demonstrate successful EAS reactions of Craig-Möbius aromatics, osmapentalenes, and fused osmapentalenes. The highly reactive nature of osmapentalene makes it susceptible to electrophilic attack by halogens, thus osmapentalene, osmafuran-fused osmapentalene, and osmabenzene-fused osmapentalene can undergo typical EAS reactions. In addition, the selective formation of a series of halogen substituted metalla-aromatics via EAS reactions has revealed an unprecedented approach to otherwise elusive compounds such as the unsaturated cyclic chlorirenium ions. Density functional theory calculations were conducted to study the electronic effect on the regioselectivity of the EAS reactions.

Carbolong chemistry: nucleophilic aromatic substitution of a triflate functionalized iridapentalene

The reactivity of the triflate functionalized iridapentalene 1, [Ir{[double bond, length as m-dash]CHC(CH₂C(CO₂Me)₂CH₂)[double bond, length as m-dash]CC[double bond, length as m-dash]CHC(OTf)[double bond, length as m-dash]CH}(CO)(PPh₃)₂]OTf, with C-, N-, O- and S-centered neutral nucleophiles was studied, leading to the isolation of a wide array of irida-carbolong derivatives. As an extension, a polycyclic complex with a rare six-fused-ring structure was constructed. This strategy provides a new route for the construction of functionalized metallaaromatic complexes, and the resulting iridacycles exhibit broad spectral absorption ranges, making them potential photoelectric materials.

Direct amidation of metallaaromatics: access to N-functionalized osmapentalynes via a 1,5-bromoamidated intermediate

The direct C–H amidation or imidation of metallaaromatics with N-bromoamides or imides has been achieved under mild conditions and leads to the formation of a family of N-functionalized metallapentalyne derivatives. A unique 1,5-bromoamidated species has been identified, and can be viewed as a σ^H-adduct intermediate in a nucleophilic aromatic substitution. The 1,5-addition of both electrophilic and nucleophilic moieties into the metallaaromatic framework demonstrates a novel pathway in contrast to the typical radical process of arene C–H amidation involving N-haloamide reagents.

The direct C–H amidation of metallapentalyne has been achieved under mild conditions in which key 1,5-bromoamidated intermediates was determined.

NIR-responsive metal-containing polymer hydrogel was prepared via the radical copolymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide and an osmium aromatic complex. It has excellent photothermal property and can be used as a light-controlled microvalve.

Acetylenic Carbon-Containing Stable Five-Membered Metallacycles

Due to the linear property around an acetylenic carbon, the introduction of such an atom to a small cycle would result in high ring strain. Currently, the smallest isolated rings are five-membered, including metallacycloalkynes and metallapentalynes. Both types contain at least one unusual small bond angle around the acetylenic carbon, thus exhibiting abnormal reactivities. This feature article gives a comprehensive overview on these two kind complexes. The synthesis and reactivities are extensively described, the source of stability is presented, and the future prospect is discussed. The article aims to provide a better development for the chemical diversity of five-membered metallacycloalkynes and metallapentalynes.

Recent Advances in the Reactions of Cyclic Carbynes

The acyclic organic alkynes and carbyne bonds exhibit linear shapes. Metallabenzynes and metallapentalynes are six- or five-membered metallacycles containing carbynes, whose carbine-carbon bond angles are less than 180°. Such distortion results in considerable ring strain, resulting in the unprecedented reactivity compared with acyclic carbynes. Meanwhile, the aromaticity of these metallacycles would stabilize the ring system. The fascinating combination of ring strain and aromaticity would lead to interesting reactivities. This mini review summarized recent findings on the reactivity of the metal-carbon triple bonds and the aromatic ring system. In the case of metallabenzynes, aromaticity would prevail over ring strain. The reactions are similar to those of organic aromatics, especially in electrophilic reactions. Meanwhile, fragmentation of metallacarbynes might be observed via migratory insertion if the aromaticity of metallacarbynes is strongly affected. In the case of metallapentalynes, the extremely small bond angle would result in high reactivity of the carbyne moiety, which would undergo typical reactions for organic alkynes, including interaction with coinage metal complexes, electrophilic reactions, nucleophilic reactions and cycloaddition reactions, whereas the strong aromaticity ensured the integrity of the bicyclic framework of metallapentalynes throughout all reported reaction conditions.

Metallaaromatic Chemistry: History and Development

Since the prediction of the existence of metallabenzenes in 1979, metallaaromatic chemistry has developed rapidly, due to its importance in both experimental and theoretical fields. Now six major types of metallaromatic compounds, metallabenzenes, metallabenzynes, heterometallaaromatics, dianion metalloles, metallapentalenes and metallapentalynes (also termed carbolongs), and spiro metalloles, have been reported and extensively studied. Their parent organic analogues may be aromatic, non-aromatic, or even anti-aromatic. These unique systems not only enrich the large family of aromatics, but they also broaden our understanding and extend the concept of aromaticity. This review provides a comprehensive overview of metallaaromatic chemistry. We have focused on not only the six major classes of metallaaromatics, including the main-group-metal-based metallaaromatics, but also other types, such as metallacyclobutadienes and metallacyclopropenes. The structures, synthetic methods, and reactivities are described, their applications are covered, and the challenges and future prospects of the area are discussed. The criteria commonly used to judge the aromaticity of metallaaromatics are presented.

Extension of the Simmons-Smith reaction to metal-carbynes: efficient synthesis of metallacyclopropenes with σ-aromaticity

The Simmons-Smith reaction offers a direct route for conversion of an alkene into a cyclopropane with a zinc carbenoid as the active intermediate. Zinc carbenoids, however, have never delivered a methylene unit to substrates with metal-carbon multiple bonds. Herein, we describe this type of reaction and the construction of three-membered rings has now been applied in organometallic systems by combining classical zinc carbenoid reagents with a range of structurally and electronically diverse metal carbynes. A variety of metallacyclopropene derivatives prepared in this way represent rare examples with σ-aromaticity in an unsaturated three-membered ring. The structures of such products are supported by experimental observations and theoretical calculations.

Synthesis and Characterization of Cyclopropaosmanaphthalenes Containing a Fused σ-Aromatic Metallacyclopropene Unit

Metalla-aromatics are important complexes that show unique properties owing to their highly conjugated systems, which show Hückel or Möbius aromaticity. Recently, several metalla-aromatics showing spiro-aromaticity or σ-aromaticity have been reported. Herein, we report the isolation of the first cyclopropametallanaphthalenes, in which the metallacyclopropene ring shows σ-aromaticity and weak hyperconjugative aromaticity. The reaction of OsCl₂ (PPh₃ )₃ with o-ethynylphenyl alkynes in the presence of PPh₃ followed by protonation with HCl yielded the first cyclopropametallanaphthalenes. The reaction mechanism and the aromaticity were also investigated by density functional theory studies.

Carbolong Chemistry: A Story of Carbon Chain Ligands and Transition Metals

The construction of metal-carbon bonds is one of the most important issues of organometallic chemistry. However, the chelation of polydentate ligands to a metal via several metal-carbon bonds is rare. Metallapentalyne, which can be viewed as a 7-carbon (7C) chain coordinated to a metal via three metal-carbon bonds, was first reported in 2013. Although metallapentalyne contains a metal-carbon triple bond in a five-membered ring (5MR) and the bond angle around the carbyne carbon is only 129.5°, metallapentalyne exhibits excellent stability to air, moisture, and heat. Metallapentalyne possesses the rare planar Möbius aromaticity, which is in sharp contrast to the Hückel antiaromaticity in pentalyne. The metal fragment not only relieves the large ring strain present in pentalyne but also results in the transformation of the antiaromaticity in pentalyne to aromaticity in metallapentalyne. With the extension of the carbon chain from 7 to 12 carbon atoms, a series of novel polycyclic frameworks were constructed via the formation of several metal-carbon bonds. Some interesting phenomena were observed for these complexes. For instance, (1) the carbyne carbon of the 7C framework could react with both nucleophilic and electrophilic reagents, leading to the formation of 16- and 18-electron metallapentalenes; (2) σ aromaticity was first observed in an unsaturated system in the 8C framework; (3) two classical antiaromatic frameworks, cyclobutadiene and pentalene, were simultaneously stabilized in the 9C framework for the first time; (4) three fused 5MRs bridged by a metal are coplanar in the 10C framework; (5) the first [2 + 2 + 2] cycloaddition of a late transition metal carbyne complex with alkynes was realized during the construction of an 11C framework; (6) the largest number of carbon atoms coordinated to a metal atom in the equatorial plane was observed in the 12C framework; and (7) sharing of the transition metal by multiple aromatic units has seldom been observed in the metalla-aromatics. Therefore, the term carbolong chemistry has been used to describe the chemistry of these novel frameworks. More interestingly, carbolong complexes exhibit diverse properties, which could lead to potential future applications. As the discovery and creation of molecular fragments lead to advancements in chemistry, medical science, and materials chemistry, these novel polydentate carbon chain chelates might have important influences in these fields due to their facile synthesis, high stability, and unique properties.

Recent Advances in Metallaaromatic Chemistry

Metallaaromatics can be broadly defined as aromatic compounds in which one of the ring atoms is a transition metal. The metallabenzenes are one important class of these compounds that has undergone extensive study recently. Closely related species such as fused-ring metallabenzenes, heterometallabenzenes, π-coordinated metallabenzenes and metallabenzynes have also attracted considerable attention. Although many metallaaromatics can be considered as metalla-analogues of classic organic aromatic compounds, this is not always the case. Recent seminal studies have shown that metallapentalenes and metallapentalynes, which are metalla-analogues of the anti-aromatic compounds pentalene and pentalyne, are in fact aromatic and highly stable. Very unusual spiro-metallaaromatic compounds have also recently been isolated. In this concepts article, key features of all these intriguing metallaaromatic compounds are discussed with reference to the structural, spectroscopic, reactivity and theoretical studies that have been undertaken. These compounds continue to generate much interest, not only because of the contributions they make to fundamental chemical understanding, but also because of the promise of possible practical applications.

Comparison of halogen bonding networks with Ru(ii) complexes and analysis of the influence of the XB interactions on their reactivity

Coordination compounds of formula [Ru(Cl)₂(CNR)₄] are interesting building blocks for the preparation of halogen bonding supramolecular networks, since the chloride ligand is a good XB acceptor. When using I₂ as the XB donor, an unexpected reaction on the ruthenium coordination sphere happens where the chloride ligands are substituted by iodides. The isolation of several intermediates with different substitution degrees and showing XB interactions in a solid state network evidenced the clear influence of the XB species in this unusual reaction process. The extension of the studies to bromine gave the analogous result, i.e. the substitution of the chloride ligands by bromides. Furthermore, changing the organic substituent in the isocyanide ligands from alkyl to aryl does not affect the outcome of the reaction; however the process is faster when the alkyl substituents are present. In the course of the study of these reactions we have isolated a whole range of XB-based networks were interactions such as ClI-I, BrBr-Br, II-I and IBr-Br are present, a systematic comparison of the XB structural features for the different networks isolated and the influence in their reactivity has been performed.

Reactions of Isocyanides with Metal Carbyne Complexes: Isolation and Characterization of Metallacyclopropenimine Intermediates

η²-Iminoketenyl species have often been postulated as the intermediates in nucleophile-induced carbyne-isocyanide C-C coupling processes. However, such species are elusive. Here we report direct formation of η²-iminoketenyl complexes from reactions of metallapentalyne with isocyanides. Our studies show that steric effects of N-substituents of the isocyanides play an important role in the stability of the three-membered metallacycles of the η²-iminoketenyl complexes. Sterically bulky isocyanides, such as tert-butyl or 1-adamantyl isocyanides, inhibit bending at the isocyanide nitrogen atoms, a requirement for formation of η²-iminoketenyl structures. Reactions of metallapentalyne with excess isocyanide allow the metal-bridged metallaindene derivativesto be isolated as a result of the isocyanide insertion into the M-C_α σ bond of metallapentalyne.
