Porosity of silica Stöber particles determined by spin-echo small angle neutron scattering

Experiment and theory of the complex refractive index of dense colloidal media

The complex refractive index is analyzed by measuring its scattering attenuation μ s, group index n g, and group velocity dispersion (GVD) for 100 nm diameter silica nanoparticles dispersed in water. The experiments were performed for wavelengths between 410 nm and 930 nm. The experimental results were compared with different mixing models for the complex refractive index of colloidal suspensions. The group index linearly scaled with the volume fraction both in experiment and for all tested models. It was found that the GVD has a nonlinear dependence on volume fraction in agreement with the coupled dipole model of Parola et al. [J. Chem. Phys.141, 124902 (2014)JCPSA60021-960610.1063/1.4895961] The scattering attenuation is in good agreement with both the coupled dipole model and the low frequency quasi-crystalline approximation [J. Electromagn. Waves Appl.2, 757 (1988)JEWAE50920-507110.1163/156939388X00053] that take particle correlations into account. With an iterative fitting procedure of all the data based on both the coupled dipole model and the quasi-crystalline approximation, the refractive index, porosity, and size of the nanoparticles were determined. We determined that the coupled dipole model is in best agreement with the data.

Kinetics of Shear-Induced Structural Ordering in Dense Colloids

The macroscopic rheological response of a colloidal solution is highly correlated with the local microscopic structure, as revealed by an in situ Rheo-SAXS experiment with a high temporal resolution. Oscillatory shear can induce a strain-controlled ordering-to-disorder transition, resulting in a shear-thickening process that is different from the normal shear-thickening behavior that is driven by hydrodynamics and particle friction. We reveal that there is a complex time-dependent kinetics toward structural ordering under different applied strains. When the strain amplitude reaches a critical value that starts to induce disordering in the system, the pathway toward the dynamic equilibrium can also become highly non-monotonic. Within the same oscillatory cycle, there is a strong correlation of ordering with different phases of the oscillation, with the system oscillating between two dynamic metastable states.

Silica-Coated Micrometer-Sized Latex Particles

A series of silica-coated micrometer-sized poly(methyl methacrylate) latex particles are prepared using a Stöber silica deposition protocol that employs tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as a soluble silica precursor. Given the relatively low specific surface area of the latex particles, silica deposition is best conducted at relatively high solids to ensure a sufficiently high surface area. Such conditions aid process intensification. Importantly, physical adsorption of chitosan onto the latex particles prior to silica deposition minimizes secondary nucleation and promotes the formation of silica shells: in the absence of chitosan, well-defined silica overlayers cannot be obtained. Thermogravimetry studies indicate that silica formation is complete within a few hours at 20 °C regardless of the presence or absence of chitosan. Kinetic data obtained using this technique suggest that the adsorbed chitosan chains promote surface deposition of silica onto the latex particles but do not catalyze its formation. Systematic variation of the TEOS/latex mass ratio enables the mean silica shell thickness to be tuned from 45 to 144 nm. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies of silica-coated latex particles after calcination at 400 °C confirm the presence of hollow silica particles, which indicates the formation of relatively smooth (albeit brittle) silica shells under optimized conditions. Aqueous electrophoresis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies are also consistent with latex particles coated in a uniform silica overlayer. The silica deposition formulation reported herein is expected to be a useful generic strategy for the efficient coating of micrometer-sized particles at relatively high solids.

Modified BET theory for actual surfaces: implementation of surface curvature

The Brauner-Emmett-Teller (BET) theory was originally based on adsorbing surfaces of zero curvature. The theory is elaborated to include a curvature parameter. The theory has been developed for mono-size dense particles (spherical or rod-like) and porous materials with a sharp pore size distribution (spherical or cylindrical pores). Validation was performed considering 62 relevant published results. It is shown that for porous materials with cylindrical pores (15 cases), while the average error in the calculation of the specific surface area using the original BET theory is ca. 46%, that from the modified theory is ca. 11%. For porous materials with spherical pores (20 cases), an average error of 58% (BET theory) is reduced to 15%. To apply the new theory to dense materials, in addition to the probe-gas adsorption isotherm, skeletal density is needed. For meso-porous materials, the curvature parameter is calculated using the BJH theory.

Recent Advances in Poly(Ionic Liquid)-Based Membranes for CO2 Separation

Poly(ionic liquid)-based membranes have been the subject of intensive research in the last 15 years due to their potential for the separation of CO₂ from other gases. In this short review, different types of PIL-based membranes for CO₂ separation are described (neat PIL membranes; PIL-IL composite membranes; PIL-polymer blend membranes; PIL-based block copolymer membranes, and PIL-based mixed matrix membranes), and their state-of-the-art separation results for different gas pairs (CO₂/N₂, CO₂/H₂, and CO₂/CH₄) are presented and discussed. This review article is focused on the most relevant research works performed over the last 5 years, that is, since the year 2017 onwards, in the field of poly(ionic liquid)-based membranes for CO₂ separation. The micro- and nano-morphological characterization of the membranes is highlighted as a research topic that requires deeper study and understanding. Nowadays there is an array of advanced structural characterization techniques, such as neutron scattering techniques with contrast variation (using selective deuteration), that can be used to probe the micro- and nanostructure of membranes, in length scales ranging from ~1 nm to ~15 μm. Although some of these techniques have been used to study the morphology of PIL-based membranes for electrochemical applications, their use in the study of PIL-based membranes for CO₂ separation is still unknown.

Holographic analysis of colloidal spheres sedimenting in horizontal slit pores

The mobility of a colloidal particle in a slit pore is modified by the particle's hydrodynamic coupling to the bounding surfaces and therefore depends on the particle's position within the pore and its direction of motion. We report holographic particle tracking measurements of colloidal particles' diffusion and sedimentation between parallel horizontal walls that yield the mobility for motions perpendicular to the walls, including its dependence on height within the channel. These measurements complement previous studies that probed colloidal mobility parallel to confining surfaces. When interpreted with effective-medium theory, holographic characterization measurements yield estimates for the sedimenting spheres' densities that can be compared with kinematic values to draw insights into the spheres' compositions. This comparison suggests, for example, that the silica spheres used in this study are slightly porous, but that their pores are too small for water to penetrate.

Using small-angle scattering to guide functional magnetic nanoparticle design

Magnetic nanoparticles offer unique potential for various technological, biomedical, or environmental applications thanks to the size-, shape- and material-dependent tunability of their magnetic properties. To optimize particles for a specific application, it is crucial to interrelate their performance with their structural and magnetic properties. This review presents the advantages of small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering techniques for achieving a detailed multiscale characterization of magnetic nanoparticles and their ensembles in a mesoscopic size range from 1 to a few hundred nanometers with nanometer resolution. Both X-rays and neutrons allow the ensemble-averaged determination of structural properties, such as particle morphology or particle arrangement in multilayers and 3D assemblies. Additionally, the magnetic scattering contributions enable retrieving the internal magnetization profile of the nanoparticles as well as the inter-particle moment correlations caused by interactions within dense assemblies. Most measurements are used to determine the time-averaged ensemble properties, in addition advanced small-angle scattering techniques exist that allow accessing particle and spin dynamics on various timescales. In this review, we focus on conventional small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering (SAXS and SANS), X-ray and neutron reflectometry, gracing-incidence SAXS and SANS, X-ray resonant magnetic scattering, and neutron spin-echo spectroscopy techniques. For each technique, we provide a general overview, present the latest scientific results, and discuss its strengths as well as sample requirements. Finally, we give our perspectives on how future small-angle scattering experiments, especially in combination with micromagnetic simulations, could help to optimize the performance of magnetic nanoparticles for specific applications.

Determination of the yield, mass and structure of silver patches on colloidal silica using multiwavelength analytical ultracentrifugation

Anisotropic nanoparticles offer considerable promise for applications but also present significant challenges in terms of their characterization. Recent developments in the electroless deposition of silver patches directly onto colloidal silica particles have opened up a simple and scalable synthesis method for patchy particles with tunable optical properties. Due to the reliance on patch nucleation and growth, however, the resulting coatings are distributed in coverage and thickness and some core particles remain uncoated. To support process optimization, new methods are required to rapidly determine patch yield, thickness and coverage. Here we present a novel approach based on multiwavelength analytical ultracentrifugation (MWL-AUC) which permits simultaneous hydrodynamic and spectroscopic characterization. The patchy particle colloids are produced in a continuous flow mixing process that makes use of a KM-type micromixer. By varying the process flow rate or metal precursor concentration we show how the silver to silica mass ratio distribution derived from the AUC-measured sedimentation coefficient distribution can be influenced. Moreover, through reasoned assumptions we arrive at an estimation of the patch yield that is close to that determined by arduous analysis of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. Finally, combining MWL-AUC, electrodynamic simulations and SEM image analysis we establish a procedure to estimate the patch thickness and coverage.

Self-Formation of Superhydrophobic Surfaces through Interfacial Energy Engineering between Liquids and Particles

The superhydrophobic surface has been used in ultradry surface applications, such as the maritime industry, windshields, non-sticky surfaces, anti-icing surfaces, self-cleaning surfaces, and so forth. However, one of the main hurdles for the production of superhydrophobic surfaces is high-cost fabrication methods. Here, we report a handy process of self-synthesis fabrication of superhydrophobic surfaces with daily supplies. Driven by the physics of biscuit dunking, we introduce a method to self-synthesize superhydrophobic surfaces from daily supplies by coating a substrate with a liquid (liquids of paraffin from candles or polydimethylsiloxane) and subsequently sprinkling powders (food-desiccant silica, alumina, sugar, salt, or flour). A mechanistic study revealed that the capillary force, governed by surface energy difference, liquid viscosity, and powder pore size, draws the liquid solution into the porous channels within the powders. The entire surface of powders, in turn, is covered with the low-surface-energy liquid to maintain the porosity, creating a 3D porous nanostructure, resulting in a water contact angle over 160°. This work provides a scientific understanding that technological developments are closely related to the science that can be seen in our daily lives. Also, we believe that further intensive studies extended from this work could enable to home-fabricate a superhydrophobic surface, such as a bathtub and sink in bathrooms and a cooking area and sink in kitchens.

Contact angle as a powerful tool in anisotropic colloid synthesis

Nucleation and growth is a technique widely used to prepare colloids, in which droplets are adsorbed onto substrate particles. Changing the contact angle of the substrates can greatly alter the morphology of the product particles. Here, we investigate the nucleation and growth of 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS) both onto Stöber spheres and onto (cross-linked) MPTMS* spheres. The former results in 'snowman' particles with a cap-shaped MPTMS* compartment, and we show that their morphology is highly controllable via the MPTMS content in the reaction mixture. The contact angle of the MPTMS* compartment decreases with droplet diameter, suggesting that this wetting process is affected not only by surface tension but also by line tension. In contrast to Stöber spheres, MPTMS* substrate particles yield highly reproducible and tuneable 'engulfed-sphere' colloids with an internal reference axis (but a homogeneous mass distribution). These engulfed-sphere particles can be fully index-matched for confocal microscopy on account of their homogeneous refractive index. Suitable index-matching mixtures of polar and of low-polar media are presented, where cyclohexyl iodide (CHI) is introduced as a new medium for colloids of high refractive index. Finally, the index-matched engulfed-sphere colloids are self-assembled into (close-packed and long-range) plastic phases, and the particles' rotational diffusion inside the crystal phases is tracked via confocal microscopy.

"DIY" Silica Nanoparticles: Exploring the Scope of a Simplified Synthetic Procedure and Absorbance-Based Diameter Measurements

In this study, the classical Stöber silica synthesis protocol was used to test the limits of simplification in the preparation and size determination of nanoparticles. The scope of three-ingredient, one-pot synthesis was established in conditions of regular 96% and 99.8% ethanol as solvent, with aqueous ammonia as the only source of base and water. Particles with diameters in the 15-400 nm range can be reliably obtained with this straightforward approach, and the direct relationship between the size and the product of concentrations of water and ammonia is evidenced. Furthermore, the idea of a linear approximation for Mie scattering in particular conditions is discussed, using experimental data and theoretical calculations. A simple, fast method for particle size determination utilizing a UV-Vis spectrophotometer-an easily accessible instrument-is explained, and shows a level of error (<0.5 SD) that can be acceptable for less rigorous laboratory use of nanoparticles or serve as a quick means for testing the influence of minor alterations to known synthetic protocols. This work aims to show that nanoparticle synthesis can (and should) become a regular occurrence, even in non-specialized labs, facilitating research into their new applications and inspiring outside-the-box solutions, while discussing the drawbacks of a more relaxed synthetic regimen.

Robust Optical-Levitation-Based Metrology of Nanoparticle's Position and Mass

Light has shown an incredible capability in precision measurement based on optomechanic interaction in high vacuum by isolating environment noises. However, there are still obstructions, such as displacement and mass estimation error, highly hampering the improvement of absolute accuracy at the nanoscale. Here, we present a nonlinearity based metrology to precisely measure the position and mass of a nanoparticle with optical levitation under 10^{-5}  mbar. By precisely controlling the oscillation amplitude of the levitated nanoparticle at the nonlinear regime for high accuracy calibration, we realized a feasible sub-picometer-level position measurement with an uncertainty of 1.0% without the prior information of mass, which can be further applied to weigh the femtogram-level mass with an uncertainty of 2.2%. It will also pave the way to construct a fine-calibrated optomechanic platform in high vacuum for high sensitivity and accuracy measurement in force and acceleration at the nanoscale and the study in quantum superposition at the mesoscopic scale.

The role of the medium in the effective-sphere interpretation of holographic particle characterization data

The in-line hologram of a micrometer-scale colloidal sphere can be analyzed with the Lorenz-Mie theory of light scattering to obtain precise measurements of the sphere's diameter and refractive index. The same technique also can be used to characterize porous and irregularly shaped colloidal particles provided that the extracted parameters are interpreted with effective-medium theory to represent the properties of an equivalent effective sphere. Here, we demonstrate that the effective-sphere model consistently accounts for changes in the refractive index of the medium as it fills the pores of porous particles and therefore yields quantitative information about such particles' structure and composition. In addition to the sample-averaged porosity, holographic perfusion porosimetry gauges the polydispersity of the porosity. We demonstrate these capabilities through measurements on mesoporous spheres, fractal protein aggregates and irregular nanoparticle agglomerates, all of which are noteworthy for their industrial significance.

Anisotropic dynamics and kinetic arrest of dense colloidal ellipsoids in the presence of an external field studied by differential dynamic microscopy

Anisotropic dynamics on the colloidal length scale is ubiquitous in nature. Of particular interest is the dynamics of systems approaching a kinetically arrested state. The failure of classical techniques for investigating the dynamics of highly turbid suspensions has contributed toward the limited experimental information available up until now. Exploiting the recent developments in the technique of differential dynamic microscopy (DDM), we report the first experimental study of the anisotropic collective dynamics of colloidal ellipsoids with a magnetic hematite core over a wide concentration range approaching kinetic arrest. In addition, we have investigated the effect of an external magnetic field on the resulting anisotropic collective diffusion. We combine DDM with small-angle x-ray scattering and rheological measurements to locate the glass transition and to relate the collective short- and long-time diffusion coefficients to the structural correlations and the evolution of the zero shear viscosity as the system approaches an arrested state.

Accurate Mass Measurement of a Levitated Nanomechanical Resonator for Precision Force-Sensing

Nanomechanical resonators are widely operated as force and mass sensors with sensitivities in the zepto-Newton (10^-21) and yocto-gram (10^-24) regime, respectively. Their accuracy, however, is usually undermined by high uncertainties in the effective mass of the system, whose estimation is a nontrivial task. This critical issue can be addressed in levitodynamics, where the nanoresonator typically consists of a single silica nanoparticle of well-defined mass. Yet, current methods assess the mass of the levitated nanoparticles with uncertainties up to a few tens of percent, therefore preventing to achieve unprecedented sensing performances. Here, we present a novel measurement protocol that uses the electric field from a surrounding plate capacitor to directly drive a charged optically levitated particle in moderate vacuum. The developed technique estimates the mass within a statistical error below 1% and a systematic error of ∼2%, and paves the way toward more reliable sensing and metrology applications of levitodynamics systems.

Bi2SiO5@g-SiO2 upconverting nanoparticles: a bismuth-driven core-shell self-assembly mechanism

Core-shell systems have attracted increasing interest among the research community in recent years due to their unique properties and structural features, and the development of new synthetic strategies is still a challenge. In this work, we have investigated lanthanide-doped Bi2SiO5 nanocrystal formation inside mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs). The role of both synthesis temperature and concentration of the bismuth precursor impregnated into the MSNs is discussed, showing an unprecedented strategy for the simultaneous stabilization of a crystalline core and a glassy shell. Temperature dependent synchrotron radiation X-ray powder diffraction (SR-XRPD) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) analyses allow one to follow the crystalline core growth. A mechanism for the formation of a Bi2SiO5@g-SiO2 core-shell nanosystem is proposed. In addition, the easy tunability of the color output of the upconverting system is demonstrated by means of suitable doping lanthanide ions with potential applications in several fields.

Spin-echo small-angle neutron scattering (SESANS) studies of diblock copolymer nanoparticles

Poly(glycerol monomethacrylate)-poly(benzyl methacrylate) (PGMA-PBzMA) diblock copolymer nanoparticles were synthesized via polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) using reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) aqueous emulsion polymerization in D2O. Such PISA syntheses produce sterically-stabilized nanoparticles in situ and can be performed at relatively high copolymer concentrations (up to 50 wt%). This PGMA-PBzMA formulation is known to form only spherical nanoparticles in water using aqueous emulsion polymerization (Macromolecules, 2014, 47, 5613-5623), which makes it an ideal model system for exploring new characterization methods. The polymer micelles were characterized using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and a recently developed form of neutron scattering, spin-echo small-angle neutron scattering (SESANS). As far as we are aware, this is the first report of a study of polymer micelles by SESANS, and the data agree well with reciprocal-space scattering. Using this technique enables characterization of the concentrated, as synthesized dispersions directly without dilution, and this will provide a method to study self-assembled polymer systems that have concentration dependent morphologies, while still maintaining the advantages of scattering techniques.

Surface Patterning with SiO2@PNiPAm Core-Shell Particles

Colloidal lithography is a cost-efficient method to produce large-scale nanostructured arrays on surfaces. Typically, colloidal particles are assembled into hexagonal close-packed monolayers at liquid interfaces and deposited onto a solid substrate. Many applications, however, require non close-packed monolayers, which are more difficult to fabricate. Preassembly at the oil/water interface provides non close-packed colloidal assemblies but these are difficult to transfer to a solid substrate without compromising the ordering due to capillary forces acting upon drying. Alternatively, plasma etching can reduce a close-packed monolayer into a non close-packed arrangement, however, with limited interparticle distance and compromised particle shape. Here, we present a simple alternative approach toward non close-packed colloidal monolayers with tailored interparticle distance, high order, and retained spherical particle shape. We preassemble poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-silica (SiO₂@PNiPAm) core-shell particles at the air/water interface, transfer the interfacial spacer to a solid substrate, and use the polymer shell as a sacrificial layer that can be thermally removed to leave a non close-packed silica monolayer. The shell thickness, cross-linking density, and the phase behavior upon compression of these complex particles at the air/water interface provide parameters to precisely control the lattice spacing in these surface nanostructures. We achieve hexagonal non close-packed arrays of silica spheres with interparticle distances between 400 and 1280 nm, up to 8 times their diameter. The retained spherical shape is advantageous for surface nanostructuring, which we demonstrate by the fabrication of gold nanocrescent arrays via colloidal lithography and silicon nanopillar arrays via metal-assisted chemical etching.
