Ecologically Modified Leather of Bacterial Origin

The research presented here is an attempt to develop an innovative and environmentally friendly material based on bacterial nanocellulose (BNC), which will be able to replace both animal skins and synthetic polymer products. Bacterial nanocellulose becomes stiff and brittle when dried, so attempts have been made to plasticise this material so that BNC can be used in industry. The research presented here focuses on the ecological modification of bacterial nanocellulose with vegetable oils such as rapeseed oil, linseed oil, and grape seed oil. The effect of compatibilisers of a natural origin on the plasticisation process of BNC, such as chlorophyll, curcumin, and L-glutamine, was also evaluated. BNC samples were modified with rapeseed, linseed, and grapeseed oils, as well as mixtures of each of these oils with the previously mentioned additives. The modification was carried out by passing the oil, or oil mixture, through the BNC using vacuum filtration, where the BNC acted as a filter. The following tests were performed to determine the effect of the modification on the BNC: FTIR spectroscopic analysis, contact angle measurements, and static mechanical analysis. As a result of the modification, the BNC was plasticised. Rapeseed oil proved to be the best for this purpose, with the help of which a material with good strength and elasticity was obtained.

Plant-Actuated Micro-Nanorobotics Platforms: Structural Designs, Functional Prospects, and Biomedical Applications

Plants are anatomically and physiologically different from humans and animals; however, there are several possibilities to utilize the unique structures and physiological systems of plants and adapt them to new emerging technologies through a strategic biomimetic approach. Moreover, plants provide safe and sustainable results that can potentially solve the problem of mass-producing practical materials with hazardous and toxic side effects, particularly in the biomedical field, which requires high biocompatibility. In this review, it is investigated how micro-nanostructures available in plants (e.g., nanoparticles, nanofibers and their composites, nanoporous materials, and natural micromotors) are adapted and utilized in the design of suitable materials for a micro-nanorobot platform. How plants' work on micro- and nanoscale systems (e.g., surface roughness, osmotically induced movements such as nastic and tropic, and energy conversion and harvesting) that are unique to plants, can provide functionality on the platform and become further prospective resources are examined. Furthermore, implementation across organisms and fields, which is promising for future practical applications of the plant-actuated micro-nanorobot platform, especially on biomedical applications, is discussed. Finally, the challenges following its implementation in the micro-nanorobot platform are also presented to provide advanced adaptation in the future.

Application and Development of Shape Memory Micro/Nano Patterns

Shape memory polymers (SMPs) are a class of smart materials that change shape when stimulated by environmental stimuli. Different from the shape memory effect at the macro level, the introduction of micro-patterning technology into SMPs strengthens the exploration of the shape memory effect at the micro/nano level. The emergence of shape memory micro/nano patterns provides a new direction for the future development of smart polymers, and their applications in the fields of biomedicine/textile/micro-optics/adhesives show huge potential. In this review, the authors introduce the types of shape memory micro/nano patterns, summarize the preparation methods, then explore the imminent and potential applications in various fields. In the end, their shortcomings and future development direction are also proposed.

Electrospun Shape Memory Polymer Micro-/Nanofibers and Tailoring Their Roles for Biomedical Applications

Shape memory polymers (SMPs) as a relatively new class of smart materials have gained increasing attention in academic research and industrial developments (e.g., biomedical engineering, aerospace, robotics, automotive industries, and smart textiles). SMPs can switch their shape, stiffness, size, and structure upon being exposed to external stimuli. Electrospinning technique can endow SMPs with micro-/nanocharacteristics for enhanced performance in biomedical applications. Dynamically changing micro-/nanofibrous structures have been widely investigated to emulate the dynamical features of the ECM and regulate cell behaviors. Structures such as core-shell fibers, developed by coaxial electrospinning, have also gained potential applications as drug carriers and artificial blood vessels. The clinical applications of micro-/nanostructured SMP fibers include tissue regeneration, regulating cell behavior, cell growth templates, and wound healing. This review presents the molecular architecture of SMPs, the recent developments in electrospinning techniques for the fabrication of SMP micro-/nanofibers, the biomedical applications of SMPs as well as future perspectives for providing dynamic biomaterials structures.

Ordered ring-shaped cracks induced by indentation in metal films on soft elastic substrates

Ordered crack patterns contain plentiful physical mechanisms and are useful for technological applications such as lithography, template, and biomimicry. Here we report on ordered multiple ring-shaped cracks induced by indentation in metal films on soft elastic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrates. It is shown that the indentation triggers the deformation of PDMS substrate and generates a radial tensile stress in the film, leading to the formation of ring-shaped cracks with a nearly uniform spacing. The morphological characteristics and evolution behaviors of the multiple ring-shaped cracks are revealed by optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Their formation mechanisms are discussed by theoretical analysis based on the fracture mechanics. The report in this work can promote better understanding of the indentation-induced stress anisotropy and mode competition in rigid-film-soft-substrate systems and provide a facile strategy to control the crack patterns by simple mechanical loading.

Hierarchical crack patterns of metal films sputter deposited on soft elastic substrates

Controlled cracks are useful in a wide range of applications, including stretchable electronics, microfluidics, sensors, templates, biomimics, and surface engineering. Here we report on the spontaneous formation of hierarchical crack patterns in metal (nickel) films sputter deposited on soft elastic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrates. The experiment shows that the nickel film generates a high tensile stress during deposition, which is relieved by the formation of disordered crack networks (called primary cracks). Due to the strong interfacial adhesion and soft substrate, the cracks can penetrate into the PDMS substrate deeply. The width and depth of the primary cracks both increase with increasing film thickness, whereas the crack spacing is insensitive to the film thickness. The film pieces dividing by the primary cracks can fracture further when they are triggered by an external disturbance due to the residual tensile stress, resulting in the formation of fine crack networks (called secondary cracks). The width and spacing of the secondary cracks show different behaviors in comparison to the primary cracks. The morphological characteristics, growth behaviors, and formation mechanisms of the primary and secondary cracking modes have been discussed in detail. The report in this work could provide better understanding of two distinct cracking modes with different sizes and morphologies.

Synthesis and functionalisation of mesoporous materials for transparent coatings and organic dye adsorption

The novel synthesis and functionalisation of mesoporous materials, which can be used to fabricate transparent hydrophobic coatings with temperature-sensitive surface properties, and also show excellent adsorption behavior to Rhodamine B dye in water.

Bio-inspired hierarchical micro- and nano-wrinkles obtained via mechanically directed self-assembly on shape-memory polymers

Inspired by complex multi-functional leaf and petal surfaces, we introduce a mechanically directed self-assembly process to create linearly oriented micro- and nanosized surface wrinkles in an all-polymer bi-layer system based on a shape-memory polymer substrate. By systematically investigating the influence of coating thickness and substrate programming strain on wrinkle period and height, we reveal how to control the structure size from a few hundred nanometers up to several microns. As a parameter unique to shape memory polymers, we demonstrate that the temperature during the recovery process can also be utilized to tailor the structure dimensions. Furthermore, we advance the method with a second structuring step to mimic the hierarchically structured petal surfaces of tulips and daisies. The presented structuring method provides a large-scale, mold-free, and very cost-effective way for the full-polymer fabrication of micro and sub-microstructures with adjustable structure size and intrinsic irregularity.
