Acetylated lignin sulfonate as a biodegradable coating for controlled-release urea fertilizer: A novel acetylation method and diffusion coefficient analysis

Plants require essential nutrients to grow, which soil alone cannot provide. Chemical fertilizers like urea supply the necessary nutrients, including nitrogen. They quickly dissolve in water and can contaminate it with nitrate and nitrite, which can cause diseases. Slow-release fertilizers are a better option to reduce environmental risks. Researchers are exploring cheap and biodegradable alternatives, such as lignin. A critical discussion in the coated urea fertilizer is modeling the nitrogen diffusion process in the coating, which predicts the system's behavior. This article uses lignin sulfonate to coat urea fertilizer, which should first be acetylated with decanoyl chloride. One of the critical parameters is the diffusion coefficient (D). D is determined using the mass transfer flux and the completion time of the effective substance, and with its help, the graph of the total mass transferred from the membrane in a specific time (Mt) is determined. D equals 6.298813 × 10-8 cm2/s using the time lag method. Also, with the fixed-point convergence method, 5.8849 × 10-8 cm2/s was obtained, which has about 0.80 % error with the D obtained by the time lag method. The Mt obtained from the analytical method and the experimental data coincides with a minimal error, which indicates high accuracy.

Silver Nanowires-Based Flexible Gold Electrode Overcoming Interior Impedance of Nanomaterial Electrodes

In the development of nanomaterial electrodes for improved electrocatalytic activity, much attention is paid to the compositions, lattice, and surface morphologies. In this study, a new concept to enhance electrocatalytic activity is proposed by reducing impedance inside nanomaterial electrodes. Gold nanodendrites (AuNDs) are grown along silver nanowires (AgNWs) on flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) support. The AuNDs/AgNWs/PDMS electrode affords an oxidative peak current density of 50 mA cm-2 for ethanol electrooxidation, a value ≈20 times higher than those in the literature do. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) demonstrates the significant contribution of the AgNWs to reduce impedance. The peak current densities for ethanol electrooxidation are decreased 7.5-fold when the AgNWs are electrolytically corroded. By in situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and density functional theory (DFT) simulation, it is validated that the ethanol electrooxidation favors the production of acetic acid with undetectable CO, resulting in a more complete oxidation and long-term stability, while the AgNWs corrosion greatly decreases acetic acid production. This novel strategy for fabricating nanomaterial electrodes using AgNWs as a charge transfer conduit may stimulate insights into the design of nanomaterial electrodes.

Influence of charge carrier density, mobility and diffusivity on conductivity–temperature dependence in polyethylene oxide–based gel polymer electrolytes

Determining the transport properties of charge carriers is essential to understand the factors that affect the conductivity trend of a polymer electrolyte system. In this work, charge carrier transport parameters of polyethylene oxide–based gel polymer electrolytes were estimated from fitting the Nyquist plot with the impedance equation, derived from the equivalent circuit that consists of a resistor in series with a constant phase element. The increase in electrolyte conductivity with temperatures from 303 K to 373 K is attributed to the increase of free ions, n (TPA+ cations and I¯ anions) and not to ionic mobility, μ. The decrease in μ with temperature is associated with the increase in the Stokes drag coefficient due to increase in ion collisions. This work explains how conductivity changes with number density of ions and mobility at various temperatures.

Polymeric membrane-modified voltammetric sensors for lipophilic analytes with nanomolar detection limit: Key parameters influencing the response characteristics

Thin plasticized PVC membrane-coated glassy carbon working electrodes have been used for the voltammetric measurement of highly lipophilic, electroactive drugs. Compared to conventional working electrodes, these membrane-coated electrodes exhibit remarkable detection limit and selectivity and are less prone to electrode fouling. The unique performance characteristics of these sensors are related to the large partition coefficient of the analyte in the membrane coating where it is oxidized in a non-aqueous membrane phase. To analyze the influence of the key parameters of the response of membrane-coated sensors, we derived theoretical expressions on the voltammetric response of the sensors. In our analysis we considered 1) the partition coefficient (P_mw) of the analyte between the aqueous sample and the organic membrane, 2) the membrane volume to sample volume ratio (V_m/V_w), and 3) the binding constant of constituents in the sample that bind the analyte (K). The results of our theoretical analysis have been tested through voltammetric measurement of highly lipophilic analytes with logP_ow values (logarithm of the partition coefficient between octanol and water) ranging between 0.3 and 7.5. By understanding of the influence of the sensor design parameters on the overall sensor response, these parameters can be tuned for optimized response slope, detection limit, etc., for solving specific analytical tasks.

Plasticized PVC Membrane Modified Electrodes: Voltammetry of Highly Hydrophobic Compounds

In the last 50 years, plasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC) membranes have gained unique importance in chemical sensor development. Originally, these membranes separated two solutions in conventional ion-selective electrodes. Later, the same membranes were applied over a variety of supporting electrodes and used in both potentiometric and voltammetric measurements of ions and electrically charged molecules. The focus of this paper is to demonstrate the utility of the plasticized PVC membrane modified working electrode for the voltammetric measurement of highly lipophilic molecules. The plasticized PVC membrane prevents electrode fouling, extends the detection limit of the voltammetric methods to sub-micromolar concentrations, and minimizes interference by electrochemically active hydrophilic analytes.
