Abstract
An analytic gradient algorithm for the long-range-corrected (lrc-) XYG3 type of doubly hybrid functionals has been derived and implemented. Due to the introduction of a long-range second-order perturbation (lrPT2) as the correction, the Z-vector equations need to be modified, where the construction of a unique total Lagrangian of the method is required. Geometry optimizations using lrc-XYG3 and lrc-XYGJ-OS have then been applied to the A21 data set that consists of 21 noncovalently interacting systems with CCSD(T) reference data for structures, in order to testify the idea of introducing lrPT2 for a better description of intermolecular interactions. While lrc-XYG3 was observed to offer a better description in dispersion-dominant systems as compared to the XYG3 functional, lrc-XYGJ-OS stands out with an overall better balanced performance in reproducing intermolecular geometries.

Abstract
Nearly all electronic structure simulations begin with obtaining approximate geometries, making a systematic quantification of errors in approximate molecular structures of key importance. Recently, the geometric energy offset (GEO) framework based on a single and natural measure for quantifying and analyzing these errors has been proposed ( J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 2020, 11, 99579964). An accurate and far less costly approximation to GEO is utilized here to readily quantify errors in main-group structures and analyze them in a chemically intuitive way. The use of semiexperimental geometries as a reference further simplifies the analysis. The analysis reveals new insights into the geometric performance of methods, their rankings, as well as patterns across different classes of methods and basis sets that arise from the analysis.

Abstract
When the structures of 1342 molecules are optimized by 30 methods and 7 basis sets, there appear 289 (21.54%) problematic molecules and 112 (8.35%) failed ones. When 278 problematic molecules are compared, the best methods are BHandH and LC-wPBE, while B97D, BP86, HFS, VSXC, and HCTH are very unreliable. When 179 problematic molecules are computed with larger basis sets, the smallest mean absolute deviation (MAD) of bond angle (2.3°) is shown by QCISD(T)/cc-pVTZ, while the smallest MAD of bond length (0.021 Å), the best SUM1 (4.9 unit), and the best SUM2 (2.4 unit) are shown by DSDPBEP86(Full), DSDPBEP86, PBE1PBE-D3, MP2, and MP2(Full) in combination with aug-cc-pVQZ, cc-pVQZ, Def2QZVP, Def2TZVPP, and/or 6-311++G(3df,3pd). Very large basis sets, for example, larger than cc-pVTZ usually have to be used to obtain very good structures and the performances of many density-functional theory methods are encouraging. The best results may be the limit of modern computational chemistry.

Abstract
Structural, energetic, and spectroscopic data derived in this work aim at the setup of an "experimentally validated" database for amino acids and polypeptides conformers. First, the "cheap" composite scheme (ChS, CCSD(T)/(CBS+CV)MP2) is tested for evaluation of conformational energies of all eight stable conformers of glycine, by comparing to the more accurate CCSD(T)/CBS+CV computations (Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 2013, 15, 10094-10111 and J Mol. Model. 2020, 26, 129). The recently proposed jun-ChS (J. Chem. Theory and Comput. 2020, 16, 988-1006), employing the jun-cc-pVnZ basis set family for CCSD(T) computations and CBS extrapolation, yields conformational energies accurate to 0.2 kJ·mol-1, at reduced computational cost with respect to aug-ChS employing aug-cc-pVnZ basis sets. The jun-ChS composite scheme is further applied to derive conformational energies for three dipeptide analogues Ac-Gly-NH2, Ac-Ala-NH2, and Gly-Gly. Finally, dipeptide conformational energies and semiexperimental equilibrium rotational constants along with the CCSD(T)/(CBS+CV)MP2 structural parameters (J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 2014, 5, 534-540) stand as the reference for benchmarking of selected density functional methodologies. The double-hybrid functionals B2-PLYP-D3(BJ) and DSD-PBEP86, perform best for structural and energetic characterization of all dipeptide analogues. From hybrid functionals CAM-B3LYP-D3(BJ) and ωB97X-D3(BJ) represent promising methods applicable for larger peptide-based systems for which computations with double-hybrid functionals are not feasible.

Abstract
Electronic structure calculations are ubiquitous in most branches of chemistry, but all have errors in both energies and equilibrium geometries. Quantifying errors in possibly dozens of bond angles and bond lengths is a Herculean task. A single natural measure of geometric error is introduced, the geometry energy offset (GEO). GEO links many disparate aspects of geometry errors: a new ranking of different methods, quantitative insight into errors in specific geometric parameters, and insight into trends with different methods. GEO can also reduce the cost of high-level geometry optimizations and shows when geometric errors distort the overall error of a method. Results, including some surprises, are given for both covalent and weak interactions.

Abstract
Non-covalent interactions between ions and π systems play an important role in molecular recognition, catalysis and biology. To guide the screen and design for artificial hosts, catalysts and drug delivery, understanding the physical nature of ion-π complexes via descriptors is indispensable. However, even with multiple descriptors that contain the leading term of electrostatic and polarized interactions, the quantitative description for the binding energies (BEs) of ion-π complexes is still lacking because of the intrinsic shortcomings of the commonly used descriptors. Here, we have shown that the impartment of orbital details into the electrostatic energy (coined as OEE) makes an excellent single descriptor for BEs of not only spherical, but also multiply-shaped, ion-π systems, highlighting the importance of an accurate description of the electrostatic interactions. Our results have further demonstrated that OEEs from a low-level method could be calibrated to BEs from a high-level method, offering a powerful practical strategy for an accurate prediction of a set of ion-π interactions.

Abstract
Recently, it was argued [Medvedev MG, et al. (2017) Science 355:49-52] that the development of density functional approximations (DFAs) is "straying from the path toward the exact functional." The exact functional should yield both exact energy and density for a system of interest; nevertheless, they found that many heavily fitted functionals for molecular energies actually lead to poor electron densities of atoms. They also observed a trend that, for the nonempirical and few-parameter functionals, densities can be improved as one climbs up the first four rungs of the Jacob's ladder of DFAs. The XYG3 type of doubly hybrid functionals (xDHs) represents a less-empirical and fewer-parameter functional on the top fifth rung, in which both the Hartree-Fock-like exchange and the second-order perturbative (MP2-like) correlation are hybridized with the low rung functionals. Here, we show that xDHs can well describe both density and energy for the same atomic set of Medvedev et al., showing that the latter trend can well be extended to the top fifth rung.

Abstract
The potential energy surface (PES) for the H + CH4 system has been constructed with the recently developed XYG3 doubly hybrid functional, while those with the standard B3LYP hybrid functional, and the Møller-Plesset perturbation theory up to the second order (MP2) are also presented for comparison. Quantum dynamics studies demonstrated that satisfactory results on the reaction probabilities and the rate coefficients can be obtained on top of the XYG3-PES, as compared to the results based on the highly accurate, yet expensive, CCSD(T)-PES (Li et al., J. Chem. Phys. 2015, 142, 204302). Further investigation suggested that the XYG3 functional is useful in providing accurate rate coefficients for some larger systems involving H atom abstractions. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract
Requiring that several properties are well reproduced is a severe test on density functional approximations. This can be assessed through the estimation of joint and conditional success probabilities. An example is provided for a small set of molecules, for properties characterizing the transition states (geometries and energies).
