Abstract
Determination of the atomic structure of solid surfaces typically depends on comparison of measured properties with simulations based on hypothesized structural models. For simple structures, the models may be guessed, but for more complex structures there is a need for reliable theory-based search algorithms. So far, such methods have been limited by the combinatorial complexity and computational expense of sufficiently accurate energy estimation for surfaces. However, the introduction of machine learning methods has the potential to change this radically. Here, we demonstrate how an evolutionary algorithm, utilizing machine learning for accelerated energy estimation and diverse population generation, can be used to solve an unknown surface structure-the (4×4) surface oxide on Pt3 Sn(111)-based on limited experimental input. The algorithm is efficient and robust, and should be broadly applicable in surface studies, where it can replace manual, intuition based model generation.

Abstract
The properties of metal nanoclusters depend on both their structures and electronic states. However, in contrast to the significant advances achieved in the synthesis of structurally well-defined metal nanoclusters, systematic control of their electronic states is still challenging. In particular, stimuli-responsive and reversible control of the electronic states of metal nanoclusters is attractive from the viewpoint of their practical applications. Recently, we developed a synthesis method for atomically precise Ag nanoclusters using polyoxometalates (POMs) as inorganic ligands. Herein, we exploited the acid/base nature of POMs to reversibly change the electronic states of an atomically precise {Ag27} nanocluster via protonation/deprotonation of the surrounding POM ligands. We succeeded in systematically controlling the electronic states of the {Ag27} nanocluster by adding an acid or a base (0–6 equivalents), which was accompanied by drastic changes in the ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra of the nanocluster solutions. These results demonstrate the great potential of Ag nanoclusters for unprecedented applications in various fields such as sensing, biolabeling, electronics, and catalysis. The electronic states of Ag nanoclusters were reversibly controlled driven by protonation/deprotonation of polyoxometalate ligands.![]()

Abstract
Two unprecedented Sn/Cd-oxo clusters, including non-alkyltin SnII2SnIV2Cd4 and alkyltin SnIV2Cd12, have been constructed using triethanolamine and inorganic or organic tin precursors, respectively. Comparative electrocatalytic CO2 reduction experiments show that the presence of non-alkyl and variable-valent tin centres could greatly improve the catalytic activities.

Finally, SnSO4 - the only tin sulfate with known crystal structure - was revised and information complemented. Abstract
In this work, the first examples of inorganic macrocyclic tin-oxo clusters which are stabilized by sulfate ligands are reported. As determined by X-ray diffraction and photoelectron spectroscopy analyses, the prepared inorganic Sn10 -oxo cluster displays interesting mixed valence behaviors, with 8 Sn4+ located at the cyclic skeleton and two Sn2+ encapsulated in the center. When further introducing Ti4+ and In3+ ions to the synthetic systems, heterometallic Sn2 Ti6 and SnIn5 Ti6 complexes with Ti6 (SO4 )9 and SnIn5 (SO4 )12 macrocyclic skeletons were prepared whose configuration and packing models were affected by the ionic radius of incorporated metals. Moreover, comparative CO2 reduction experiments confirm that such heterometallic composition can significantly improve the catalytic activities of these inorganic macrocyclic oxo clusters. This work represents a milestone in constructing inorganic tin complexes and also macrocyclic metal oxo clusters with tunable configurations and properties.

Abstract
A new strategy is reported to tailor the electronic properties of a superatomic metal chalcogenide cluster by redox matching the cluster core with surface tin(IV) sites. Two ternary clusters (SnR2)3Co6Se8L6 (R = Me, nBu) are synthesized by salt metathesis from the hexalithiated salt [Li2(py)2]3Co6Se8L6 and R2SnCl2. Cyclic and differential-pulse voltammetry studies reveal that the tristannylated clusters feature two new, near-degenerate, electronic states within the highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital gap of the Co6Se8 core, which are attributed to the reduction of a surface tin site. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that no Sn···Se coordination is present in the solid state. The single-crystal X-ray structure of the hexalithiated salt starting material is reported for the tetrahydrofuran (THF) adduct variant [Li2(THF)2]6Co6Se8L6.

Abstract
Three types of heterometallic bismuth-tungsten oxide nanoclusters were successfully synthesized by the reactions of lacunary silicotungstates (trivacant [A-α-SiW9O34]10- and divacant [γ-SiW10O36]8-) and Bi3+ in organic solvents. Lone pairs on Bi3+ acted as structure-directing groups in these nanoclusters.
