Abstract
Oligo(phenyleneethynylene)s (OPEs) have attracted widespread attention due to their remarkable (opto)electronic and photophysical properties, which have enabled numerous applications. The versatile functionalization possibilities of OPEs make them unique candidates to form various shape-persistent geometries, including linear, triangular, rectangular, hexagonal and macrocyclic. However, as a result of this structural variety, it is oftentimes challenging to correlate molecular design with self-assembly properties. In this minireview, we have classified OPEs based on their molecular shapes and correlated them with their self-assembly behavior in solution. Particularly, we provide important insights into the aggregation propensity of the different molecular shapes and how to tune the association strength using various non-covalent interactions. Our classification will enable a better understanding of the structure-property correlation in OPEs, which is key to develop supramolecular functional materials.

Formation of supramolecular channels by reversible unwinding-rewinding of bis(indole) double helix via ion coordination. Nat Commun 2022; 13:6507. Abstract
Stimulus-responsive reversible transformation between two structural conformers is an essential process in many biological systems. An example of such a process is the conversion of amyloid-β peptide into β-sheet-rich oligomers, which leads to the accumulation of insoluble amyloid in the brain, in Alzheimer's disease. To reverse this unique structural shift and prevent amyloid accumulation, β-sheet breakers are used. Herein, we report a series of bis(indole)-based biofunctional molecules, which form a stable double helix structure in the solid and solution state. In presence of chloride anion, the double helical structure unwinds to form an anion-coordinated supramolecular polymeric channel, which in turn rewinds upon the addition of Ag+ salts. Moreover, the formation of the anion-induced supramolecular ion channel results in efficient ion transport across lipid bilayer membranes with excellent chloride selectivity. This work demonstrates anion-cation-assisted stimulus-responsive unwinding and rewinding of artificial double-helix systems, paving way for smart materials with better biomedical applications.

Abstract
In general, a single enantiomer can induce a foldamer into a preferred-handed helix, while another condition is required for the helical inversion. In this work, it is found that the helix induction and subsequent inversion of the poly(m-phenylene diethynylene)-based foldamer bearing aza-18-crown-6 pendants (Poly-1) can be realized by increasing the concentration of sterically hindered L-amino acid perchlorate salts. When the amount of chiral enantiomers is small, one enantiomer tends to complex with two non-adjacent aza-18-crown-6 rings via three N+ -H···O hydrogen bonds in a sandwich mode. Notably, the transition dipole moment is perpendicular to aza-18-crown-6 ring, so that the induced helical chirality in Poly-1 main chain is opposite to the chirality of enantiomers. When the amount of chiral enantiomers is large enough, each aza-18-crown-6 is occupied by one enantiomer, which causes the transition dipole moment in a parallel direction to aza-18-crown-6 ring. In this case, the increased steric hindrance can facilitate the inversion of screw sense of Poly-1 main chain, which is directed by chiral center of enantiomers. As a result, a helix inversion has been achieved successfully. This work not only provides a novel strategy for regulating the two-stage folded helical conformations by the single enantiomers, but opens a window to develop chiral recognition materials. Abstract
The design of new chiral chromophores that allow tunable assembly of higher order helical structures by using natural stimuli offers promising avenue in understanding various biological processes. In particular, access to dynamic multistimuli-responsive systems can provide real-time monitoring of chiral transformation in chemical and biological systems. We report on the synthesis of naphthalenediimide appended L-glutamate (NDI-L-Glu) that self-assembles into chiral supramolecular structures under physiological conditions. Specifically, NDI-L-Glu shows a mixture of left- and right-handed helices under physiological conditions, and any deviation from the ambient biochemical environment has a remarkable influence on the chirality of these structures. For instance, acidic environments shift the helicity to left-handedness while the alkaline conditions reversed the helical structures to right-handedness, thereby mimicking the molecular virulence mechanism of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV). The chirality of these supramolecular assemblies can also be controllably tuned by using temperature as an external stimulus, allowing reversible flip of helicity.

Abstract
We report the correlation between the fluorescence intensity and the helical pitch of supramolecular hydrogels with Tb(III) and Eu(III) as well as their inkjet printing patterning as an application. The luminescent gels, which exhibited three different emissions of red, green, and blue, could be prepared without and with Eu(III) and Tb(III). The luminescence intensity of supramolecular gels (gel-Tb and gel-Eu) composed of Tb(III) and Eu(III) was ca. 3-fold larger than that of the sol (1+Tb(III) or 1+Eu(III)), which was attributed to large tilting angles between molecules. By AFM observations, these gels showed well-defined right-handed helical nanofibers formed by coordination bonds in which the helical pitch lengths were strongly dependent on the concentrations of lanthanide ions. In particular, the large luminescence intensity of gel-Tb exhibited a smaller helical pitch length than that of gel-1 due to relatively weak π-π stacking with large tilting angles between molecules. The luminescence intensities were enhanced linearly with increasing concentrations of lanthanide ions. This is the first example of the correlation between the helical pitch length and the luminescence intensity of supramolecular materials. The coordination bonding in supramolecular hydrogels had a strong influence on rheological properties. We also developed a water-compatible inkjet printing system to generate luminescent supramolecular gels on A4-sized paper. The images of a logo and the text were composed of three different emissions and were well-printed on A4 sized paper coated with gel-1.
