Use of steric encumbrance to develop conjugated nanoporous polymers for metal-free catalytic hydrogenation

Sensitive and rapid detection of bacterial endotoxin with a functional carbon nanotube field-effect transistor biosensor

Endotoxin in the blood can cause unexplained fever, and even death due to endotoxemia and bacteremia. Rapid and sensitive detection of endotoxin has become a priority event to intervene in the occurrence of dangerous diseases in time. In this context, a carbon nanotubes-based field-effect transistor (CNTs FET) nanosensor is developed to realize the rapid, label-free and sensitive detection of endotoxin. The CNTs FET was fabricated by assembling the polymer-sorted high-purity semiconductor CNT films onto the sensing channel. In order to improve the detection sensitivity, carboxylated graphene quantum dots (cGQDs) were coupled to the CNT surface via the poly-l-lysine (PLL). After that, polymyxin B (PMB), which is highly specific for endotoxin, was covalently combined with cGQDs, thus enabling the capture and detection of endotoxin. The method not only displayed an extremely low level of limitation of detection in PBS (4.6 fg/mL) and serum (30.3 fg/mL), respectively, with superior resistance to interference, but also enabled the analysis of Gram-negative bacterial infections in blood samples in a short duration of time. Meanwhile, the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) proved the superior diagnostic accuracy of this method (AUC = 0.990). Considering its excellent performance, the constructed CNTs FET biosensor is a promising tool to provide early warning of disease for clinical Gram-negative bacteremia and endotoxemia.

Engineering Nanostructured Interfaces of Hexagonal Boron Nitride-Based Materials for Enhanced Catalysis

ConspectusHexagonal boron nitrides (h-BNs) are attractive two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials that consist of alternating B and N atoms and layered honeycomb-like structures similar to graphene. They have exhibited unique properties and promising application potentials in the field of energy storage and transformation. Recent advances in utilizing h-BN as a metal-free catalyst in the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane have triggered broad interests in exploring h-BN in catalysis. However, h-BN-based materials as robust nanocatalysts in heterogeneous catalysis are still underexplored because of the limited methodologies capable of affording h-BN with controllable crystallinity, abundant porosity, high purity, and defect engineering, which played important roles in tuning their catalytic performance. In this Account, our recent progress in addressing the above issues will be highlighted, including the synthesis of high-quality h-BN-based nanomaterials via both bottom-up and top-down pathways and their catalytic utilization as metal-free catalysts or as supports to tune the interfacial electronic properties on the metal nanoparticles (NPs). First, we will focus on the large-scale fabrication of h-BN nanosheets (h-BNNSs) with high crystallinity, improved surface area, satisfactory purity, and tunable defects. h-BN derived from the traditional approaches using boron trioxide and urea as the starting materials generally contains carbon/oxygen impurities and has low crystallinity. Several new strategies were developed to address the issues. Using bulk h-BN as the precursor via gas exfoliation in liquid nitrogen, single- or few-layered h-BNNS with abundant defects could be generated. Amorphous h-BN precursors could be converted to h-BN nanosheets with high crystallinity assisted by a magnesium metallic flux via a successive dissolution/precipitation/crystallization procedure. The as-fabricated h-BNNS featured high crystallinity and purity as well as abundant porosity. An ionothermal metathesis procedure was developed using inorganic molten salts (NaNH₂ and NaBH₄) as the precursors. The h-BN scaffolds could be produced on a large scale with high yield, and the as-afforded materials possessed high purity and crystallinity. Second, utilization of the as-prepared h-BN library as metal-free catalysts in dehydrogenation and hydrogenation reactions will be summarized, in which they exhibited enhanced catalytic activity over the counterparts from the previous synthesis method. Third, the interface modulation between metal NPs with the as-prepared defects' abundant h-BN support will be highlighted. The h-BN-based strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) nanocatalysts were constructed without involving reducible metal oxides via the ionothermal procedure we developed by deploying specific inorganic metal salts, acting as robust nanocatalysts in CO oxidation. Under conditions simulated for practical exhaust systems, promising catalytic efficiency together with high thermal stability and sintering resistance was achieved. Across all of these examples, unique insights into structures, defects, and interfaces that emerge from in-depth characterization through microscopy, spectroscopy, and diffraction will be highlighted.

The Mechanochemical Synthesis and Activation of Carbon-Rich π-Conjugated Materials

Mechanochemistry uses mechanical force to break, form, and manipulate chemical bonds to achieve functional transformations and syntheses. Over the last years, many innovative applications of mechanochemistry have been developed. Specifically for the synthesis and activation of carbon-rich π-conjugated materials, mechanochemistry offers reaction pathways that either are inaccessible with other stimuli, such as light and heat, or improve reaction yields, energy consumption, and substrate scope. Therefore, this review summarizes the recent advances in this research field combining the viewpoints of polymer and trituration mechanochemistry. The highlighted mechanochemical transformations include π-conjugated materials as optical force probes, the force-induced release of small dye molecules, and the mechanochemical synthesis of polyacetylene, carbon allotropes, and other π-conjugated materials.

Defect-Regulated Frustrated-Lewis-Pair Behavior of Boron Nitride in Ambient Pressure Hydrogen Activation

The construction of heterogeneous frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) with performance comparable to or surpassing the homogeneous counterparts in H₂ activation is a long-standing challenge. Herein, sterically hindered Lewis acid ("B" center) and Lewis base ("N" center) sites were anchored within the rigid lattice of highly crystalline hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) scaffolds. The active sites were created via precision defect regulation during the molten-salt-involved (NaNH₂ and NaBH₄) h-BN construction procedure. The as-afforded h-BN scaffolds achieved highly efficient H₂/D₂ activation and dissociation under ambient pressure via FLP-like behavior, and attractive catalytic efficiency in hydrogenation reactions surpassing the current heterogeneous analogues.

Visible-Light-Enhanced Suzuki-Miyaura Reactions of Aryl Chlorides in Water with Pd NPs Supported on a Conjugated Nanoporous Polycarbazole

The visible-light-enhanced catalytic activation of aryl chlorides for Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling (SMC) reactions is highly challenging because of the strength of the C-Cl bond. In this work, palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) were grown on a conjugated nanoporous polycarbazole (CNP), named Pd/CNP. The hybrid material Pd/CNP could catalyze the SMC reactions of aryl chlorides with arylboronic acids in water under blue LED irradiation at room temperature with high efficiency. This protocol exhibited good functional group tolerance and the catalyst could be recycled without significant loss of its catalytic activity. CNP not only provided photogenerated electrons to enrich the electron density of the Pd NPs but also generated holes for the activation of the arylboronic acids.

Safety and Optimization of Metabolic Labeling of Endothelial Progenitor Cells for Tracking

Metabolic labeling is one of the most powerful methods to label the live cell for in vitro and in vivo tracking. However, the cellular mechanisms by modified glycosylation due to metabolic agents are not fully understood. Therefore, metabolic labeling has not yet been widely used in EPC tracking and labeling. In this study, cell functional properties such as proliferation, migration and permeability and gene expression patterns of metabolic labeling agent-treated hUCB-EPCs were analyzed to demonstrate cellular effects of metabolic labeling agents. As the results, 10 μM Ac4ManNAz treatment had no effects on cellular function or gene regulations, however, higher concentration of Ac4ManNAz (>20 μM) led to the inhibition of functional properties (proliferation rate, viability and rate of endocytosis) and down-regulation of genes related to cell adhesion, PI3K/AKT, FGF and EGFR signaling pathways. Interestingly, the new blood vessel formation and angiogenic potential of hUCB-EPCs were not affected by Ac4ManNAz concentration. Based on our results, we suggest 10 μM as the optimal concentration of Ac4ManNAz for in vivo hUCB-EPC labeling and tracking. Additionally, we expect that our approach can be used for understanding the efficacy and safety of stem cell-based therapy in vivo.

Engineering nanoporous organic frameworks to stabilize naked Au clusters: a charge modulation approach

A simple charge modulation approach has been developed to stabilize naked Au clusters on a nanoporous conjugated organic network. Through engineering pore walls with regulated charges, the controllable growth of Au nanoclusters has been realized. The resulting supported catalyst exhibits excellent performance in the aerobic oxidation of alcohols.

Solid-State Synthesis of Conjugated Nanoporous Polycarbazoles

A novel solid-state synthetic approach has been developed for the generation of conjugated nanoporous polymer networks. Using mechanochemical-assisted oxidative coupling polymerization, we demonstrated a rapid and solvent-free synthesis of conjugated polycarbazoles with high porosities and promising CO₂ storage abilities. This innovative approach constitutes a new direction for the development of novel nanoporous polymer frameworks through sustainable solid-state assembly pathways, and may open up new possibilities for the rational design and synthesis of nanoporous materials for carbon capture.

Pd-Metalated Conjugated Nanoporous Polycarbazoles for Additive-Free Cyanation of Aryl Halides: Boosting Catalytic Efficiency through Spatial Modulation

Transition-metal-catalyzed cyanation of aryl halides is a common route to benzonitriles, which are integral to many industrial procedures. However, traditional homogeneous catalysts for such processes are expensive and suffer poor recyclability, so a heterogeneous analogue is highly desired. A novel spatial modulation approach has been developed to fabricate a heterogeneous Pd-metalated nanoporous polymer, which catalyzes the cyanation of aryl halides without need for ligands. The catalyst displays high activity in the synthesis of benzonitriles, including high product yields, excellent stability and recycling, and broad functional-group tolerance.

Superacid-promoted synthesis of highly porous hypercrosslinked polycarbazoles for efficient CO2 capture
