Light-driven sequential shape transformation of block copolymer particles through three-dimensional confined self-assembly

Shape-controlled block copolymer (BCP) particles that respond to light stimulus have drawn great attention due to their promising applications in smart materials, yet polymeric particles with light-triggered controllable sequential shape transformation (SST) are still rarely reported. By confined co-assembly of polystyrene-b-poly(2-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P2VP) and azo-containing light-responsive additives within emulsions, herein, we fabricated BCP particles with light-controlled SST behavior. Attributed to the quaternization of P2VP chains with bromoalkyl additives and the trans-cis isomerization of an azo group under UV light, the interfacial interactions between the BCPs and the surrounding aqueous phase are significantly varied; therefore, the particles exhibit three distinct phases in sequence: (1) elongation of ellipsoidal particles with increasing domain spacing; (2) shape transformation of elongated ellipsoidal particles into accordion-like particles; and (3) disassembly of polymer particles into small spheres. In addition, these particles with SST behavior can be used in light-controlled drug release at a high spatial-temporal resolution, demonstrating their potential in clinical settings and biomedicine.

Light-Enabled Reversible Shape Transformation of Block Copolymer Particles

Confined self-assembly of block copolymers (BCPs) is effective to manipulate various shapes of particles. In emulsion confined self-assembly, reversibly light-trigged switchable BCP particles are extremely expected, yet rarely reported. Herein, a novel strategy is developed to realize reversibly light-responsive shape-transformation of BCP particles by constructing functional surfactants with light-active azobenzene (azo) groups in the confined self-assembly of BCPs within emulsion droplet. Ultraviolet and visible lights can reversibly modulate the amphiphilicity and interfacial affinity of the surfactants to different blocks, triggering the reversible microphase structure transformation of BCP particles with high temporal-spatial resolution. We can realize shape and morphological transitions of BCP particles from onion-shaped spherical particles to striped ellipsoids and, ultimately, to inverse onion-like particles by ultraviolet irradiation. More importantly, this shape transformation is reversible by the irradiation of visible light, attributed to the reversible trans-cis isomerization of azo groups. We also demonstrate that the light-triggered shape transformation of BCP particles can be employed in a controllable drug release through a noncontacted and programmed manner, showing promising potential in clinic and biomedicine.

Self-healing supramolecular hydrogels through host-guest interaction between cyclodextrin and carborane

New self-healing hydrogels based on the strong host-guest interaction of carborane (CB) and β-cylcodextrin (CD) were constructed through CB-grafted dextran and β-CD-grafted poly(acrylic acid). The storage modulus of the hydrogels could reach as high as 10 kPa, and the hydrogels exhibited an outstanding self-healing rate in minutes.

Recent advances in soft functional materials: preparation, functions and applications

Synthetic materials and biomaterials with elastic moduli lower than 10 MPa are generally considered as soft materials. Research studies on soft materials have been boosted due to their intriguing features such as light-weight, low modulus, stretchability, and a diverse range of functions including sensing, actuating, insulating and transporting. They are ideal materials for applications in smart textiles, flexible devices and wearable electronics. On the other hand, benefiting from the advances in materials science and chemistry, novel soft materials with tailored properties and functions could be prepared to fulfil the specific requirements. In this review, the current progress of soft materials, ranging from materials design, preparation and application are critically summarized based on three categories, namely gels, foams and elastomers. The chemical, physical and electrical properties and the applications are elaborated. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of soft materials to researchers in different disciplines.

Reversible photo-responsive gel–sol transitions of robust organogels based on an azobenzene-containing main-chain liquid crystalline polymer

Stimuli-responsive supramolecular gels have been widely investigated, but the construction of a liquid crystalline gel with a high mechanical property and reversible photo-response still remains a challenge. This is due to the difficulty of designing gelators with liquid crystal properties and gelation abilities in organic solvents simultaneously. In this study, an azobenzene-containing main-chain polyester (Azo-mLCP) with a pendant amide group was synthesized. The organogel of Azo-mLCP via a hydrogen bond in dioxane possessed reversible thermal- and photo-responsive behaviours. The organogel exhibited a good self-supporting ability when the concentration of the gelator was more than 7.5 wt%. The rapid trans-to-cis isomerization of Azo-mLCP in solution was studied via UV-Vis absorption spectra. In addition, the gel-to-sol transition of the organogel could be triggered efficiently by an incomplete trans-to-cis conversion strategy. This study opens a way for the main-chain liquid crystalline polymers to serve in potential applications in photo-responsive robust actuators, electro-optical devices, and so on.

A robust and photo-responsive organogel has been constructed by introducing an azobenzene-containing main-chain liquid crystalline polymer gelator.

Composite Nanotube Ring Structures Formed by Two-Step Self-Assembly for Drug Loading/Release

Nanotube rings are barely reported novel structures formed by the self-assembly of soft matter, as compared with nanotube structures and ring structures. The two-step self-assembly of amphiphilic copolymer AB and solvophobic copolymer CDC was studied. We found that nanotube rings can be formed from a certain mass ratio of copolymer CDC to copolymer AB and block D of certain rigidity. More interestingly, we discovered a new strategy for drug loading and release, which is different from the usual strategies reported in the literature. The present study provides a new rationale for the self-assembly of copolymers.

Photoresponsive polymers with multi-azobenzene groups

Photoresponsive polymers with multi-azobenzene groups are reviewed and their potential applications in photoactuation, photo-patterning, and photoinduced birefringence are introduced.

Light-Switchable Azobenzene-Containing Macromolecules: From UV to Near Infrared

Azobenzene-containing macromolecules (azo-macromolecules) such as azobenzene-containing polymers (azopolymers) and azobenzene-functionalized biomacromolecules are photoswitchable macromolecules. Trans-to-cis photoisomerization in conventional azo-macromolecules is induced by ultraviolet (UV) light. However, UV light cannot penetrate deeply into issue and has a very small fraction in sunlight. Therefore, conventional azo-macromolecules are problematic for biomedical and solar-energy-related applications. In this Feature Article, the strategies for constructing visible and near-infrared (NIR) light-responsive azo-macromolecules are reviewed, and the potential applications of visible- and NIR-light-responsive azo-macromolecules in biomedicine and solar energy conversion are highlighted. The remaining challenges in the field of photoswitchable azo-macromolecules are discussed.

Poly(ionic liquid)-based nanogels and their reversible photo-mediated association and dissociation

Azo-incorporated PIL nanogels can undergo reversible photo-mediated association and dissociation, and they can also be used as the building blocks to fabricate photo-responsive supramolecular system.
