Controlling morphology evolution of titanium oxide-gold nanourchin for photocatalytic degradation of dyes and photoinactivation of bacteria in the infected wound

We report a one-pot, room-temperature, morphology-controlled synthesis of titanium oxide (TiO_x)-gold nanocomposites (TiO_x-Au NCs) using HAuCl₄ and TiCl₃ as precursors, and catechin as reducing agent. TiO_x-Au NCs have a range of morphologies from star-like to urchin-like shape depending on the concentration of TiCl₃ in the reaction mixture. The urchin-shaped TiO_x-Au NCs exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity toward dye degradation due to strong light absorption, plasmon-induced excitation, high conductivity of the gold, and reduced hole-electron pair recombination. TiO_x-Au NCs have the advantage of a wide range of light absorption and surface plasmon absorption-mediated excitation due to their abundant gold spikes, which enabled the degradation of dyes over 97% in 60 min, using a xenon lamp as a light source. In addition, TiO_x-Au NCs are highly efficient for the photoinactivation of Escherichia coli and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and Candida albicans through the photodynamic generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and damage to the bacterial membrane. The catechin derivatives on the NCs effectively promoted curing MRSA infected wounds in rats through inducing collagen synthesis, migration of keratinocytes, and neovascularization.

Dinuclear Gold(I) Complexes Bearing N,N'-Allyl-Bridged Bisimidazolylidene Ligands

A novel N,N'-allyl-bridged bisimidazolium salt and a novel dinuclear Ag(I) and a Au(I) NHC complex are reported. Both metallacyclic complexes have a twisted structural shape due to the rigid allylic system and form two different isomers relating to the position of the double bonds. The allyl-group shows photoisomerisation, but no reactivity towards bases for the additional coordination of Pd(II).

Supercritical water assisted preparation of recyclable gold nanoparticles and their catalytic utility in cross-coupling reactions under sustainable conditions

Preparation of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in environmentally friendly water without using any reducing agents under supercritical conditions is demonstrated. PXRD, XPS, FE-SEM and HR-TEM analysis confirmed the formation of phase-pure and crystalline AuNPs of the size of ∼10-30 nm. The catalytic potential of AuNPs was manifested through a generalized green procedure that could accommodate both Sonogashira as well as Suzuki coupling under aqueous conditions at low catalytic loading (0.1 mol%). The AuNP catalyst was found to be recuperated after the reaction and reused for up to six catalytic cycles with no leaching out of gold species as confirmed through ICP-OES analysis. With no confinement of AuNP catalysis to cross-coupling reaction, synthetic extension to one-flask preparation of π-conjugated semiconductors (4 examples) and their optoelectronic properties were also investigated. Other significant features of the present work include short reaction time, site-selectivity, wide substrate scope, high conversion, good chemical yields and applicability in gram-scale synthesis. Overall, the results of this paper signify an operationally sustainable supercritical fluid processing method for the synthesis of AuNPs and their catalytic application towards cross-coupling reactions in green media.

Novel photoluminescence enzyme immunoassay based on supramolecular host-guest recognition using L-arginine/6-aza-2-thiothymine-stabilized gold nanocluster

A new photoluminescence (PL) enzyme immunoassay was designed for sensitive detection of aflatoxin B₁ (AFB₁) via an innovative enzyme substrate, 6-aza-2-thiothymine-stabilized gold nanocluster (AAT-AuNC) with L-arginine. The enzyme substrate with strong PL intensity was formed through supramolecular host-guest assembly between guanidine group of L-arginine and AAT capped on the surface of AuNC. Upon arginase introduction, the captured L-arginine was hydrolyzed into ornithine and urea, thus resulting in the decreasing PL intensity. Based on this principle, a novel competitive-type immunoreaction was first carried out on AFB₁-bovine serum albumin (AFB₁-BSA) conjugate-coated microplate, using arginase-labeled anti-AFB₁ antibody as the competitor. Under the optimum conditions, the PL intensity increased with the increment of target AFB₁, and allowed the detection of the analyte at concentrations as low as 3.2 pg mL^-1 (ppt). Moreover, L-arginine-AAT-AuNC-based PL enzyme immunoassay afforded good reproducibility and acceptable specificity. In addition, the accuracy of this methodology, referring to commercial AFB₁ ELISA kit, was evaluated to analyze naturally contaminated or spiked peanut samples, giving well-matched results between two methods, thus representing a useful scheme for practical application in quantitative monitoring of mycotoxins in foodstuff.
