Abstract
Circularly polarized (CP) lasers hold tremendous potential for advancing spin information communication and display technologies. Organic materials are emerging candidates for high-performance CP lasers because of their abundant chiral structures and excellent gain characteristics. However, their dissymmetry factor (glum) in CP emission is typically low due to the weak chiral light matter interactions. Here, we presented an effective approach to significantly amplifying glum by leveraging the intrinsic 2D-chiroptical response of an anisotropic organic supramolecular crystal. The organic complex microcrystal was designed to exhibit large 2D-chiroptical activities through strong coupling interactions between their remarkable linear birefringence (LB) and high degree of fluorescence linear polarization. Such 2D-chiroptical response can be further enhanced by the stimulated emission resulted from an increased degree of linear polarization, yielding a nearly pure CP laser with an exceptionally high glum of up to 1.78. Moreover, exploiting the extreme susceptibility of LB to temperature, we demonstrate a prototype of temperature-controlled chiroptical switches. These findings offer valuable insights for harnessing organic crystals to facilitate the development of high-performance CP lasers and other chiroptical devices.

Abstract
Borates have garnered a lot of attention in the realm of solid-state chemistry due to their remarkable characteristics, in which the synthesis of borates with isolated [BO3] by adding rare-earth elements is one of the main areas of structural design study. Five new mixed-metal Y-based rare-earth borates, Ba2ZnY2(BO3)4, KNa2Y(BO3)2, Li2CsY4(BO3)5, LiRb2Y(BO3)2, and RbCaY(BO3)2, have been discovered using the high-temperature solution approach. Isolated [BO3] clusters arranged in various configurations comprise their entire anionic framework, allowing for optical anisotropy tuning between 0.024 and 0.081 under 1064 nm. In this study, we characterize the relative placements of their [BO3] groups and examine how their structure affects their characteristics. The origin of their considerable optical anisotropy has been proven theoretically. This study unequivocally demonstrates that even a slight alteration to borates' anionic structure can result in a significant improvement in performance.

Abstract
By introducing the d0 metal cation Mo6+ into phosphates, two new molybdophosphates, K2MgMoP2O10 and K3Mg2MoP3O14, were synthesized by spontaneous crystallization, and their structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. K2MgMoP2O10 shows a two-dimensional layer composed of the uncommon eight-membered ring [Mo2P2O16] formed by [MoO6] and [PO4], while K3Mg2MoP3O14 shows isolated [MoP3O14] clusters composed of [MoO5] and [PO4]. K2MgMoP2O10 and K3Mg2MoP3O14 have UV cut-off wavelengths of 277 and 271 nm, respectively, which are significantly shorter than those of most recently published molybdophosphates. To the best of our acknowledge, K2MgMoP2O10 exhibits the largest birefringence (a calculated value of 0.187 at 546 nm) among reported alkali metal or alkaline earth metal molybdophosphates, which provides a way to explore new birefringent materials. First-principles analysis of the electronic structure shows that the large birefringence of K2MgMoP2O10 mainly originates from the [MoO6] units.

Abstract
The first chloroaluminoborate, CsAlB3O6Cl, with innovative AlO3Cl tetrahedra and a perfect planar arrangement of [B3O6] groups, was structurally designed and synthesized via chlorination of [AlO4] tetrahedra. Simultaneously, the smooth introduction of the [AlO3Cl] group into borates initiates the development of a chloroaluminoborate and greatly enriches the structural chemistry of aluminoborates.

Abstract
Birefringent materials with high optical anisotropy have been identified as a research hotspot owing to their significant scientific and technological significance in modern optoelectronics for manipulating light polarization. Researchers studying borate systems have discovered that adding π-conjugated units placed in parallel can significantly increase the birefringence of crystalline solids; some examples include [BO3] units, [B2O5] units, and [B3O6] units. However, there are not many borates with strictly parallel configurations of π-conjugated [B2O5] units. In this study, a new bimetallic borate Sr2Cd4(B2O5)3 with near-parallel arrangement of π-conjugated [B2O5] units was discovered. Sr2Cd4(B2O5)3 possesses the maximum number density of [B2O5] units, shortest dihedral angle of [B2O5] units (between the two [BO3]), and largest degree of [CdO6] octahedral distortion among all the currently known Sr-Cd-B-O tetragonal system borates, making it demonstrate a large birefringence of 0.102 at 532 nm. Theoretical analysis proves that π-conjugated [B2O5] anions are the primary source of the large birefringence of Sr2Cd4(B2O5)3.

Abstract
Two deep ultraviolet (DUV) hydroxylated-alkali-metal borates, NaRbB10O14(OH)4 (I) and Na3CsB10O16(OH)2 (II), have been successfully synthesized by a high-temperature solution and solvothermal method. Both of them feature [B5Om(OH)n] units, which form chains for (I) and bilayers with nine-membered boron rings for (II). It is worth noting that both compounds exhibit very wide theoretical band gaps of 7.33 and 6.55 eV for (I) and (II), respectively, which denotes that they should have desirable DUV transmittance ability. Moreover, the title compounds have moderate birefringence owing to the π-conjugated [BO3], [BO2(OH)] groups, corresponding to 0.070 for (I) and 0.054 for (II) at 1064 nm. The structure characteristics and optical properties were also investigated and discussed. The results make it beneficial for exploring novel DUV hydroxylated borate optical crystals.

Abstract
A mild hydrothermal method was employed to successfully synthesize two new sulfate fluorides, namely, AYSO4F2 (A = K, Rb). They are isomorphic, and both contain [YO4F4] polyhedra and [SO4] tetrahedra in the structure. Theoretical calculations and experimental tests show that AYSO4F2 (A = K, Rb) have large band gaps (7.79 and 7.82 eV) and moderate birefringence (0.015 and 0.02 @ 546.1 nm), with significantly enhanced birefringence and band gaps as compared to that of the single alkali metal sulfates A2SO4 (A = K, Rb). Furthermore, theoretical calculations show that [YO4F4] polyhedra are the main reason for the band gap and birefringence enhancement. This work contributes to the advancement of structural chemistry in the field of rare-earth sulfates, offering a novel approach for the design of sulfates characterized by large birefringence.

Abstract
Fluorooxoborates constitute a rich source of optical crystals due to their structural diversity and excellent performance. Antimony fluorooxoborates with stereochemically active lone pairs of electrons still have not been found, although the first antimony borate was discovered several years ago. In this study, we have achieved the successful synthesis of the first antimony(III) fluorooxoborate with an unprecedented [B2O4F]∞ chain, namely SbB2O4F. Remarkably, SbB2O4F shows strong birefringence (0.171@1064 nm) and short UV cutoff edges (about 220 nm) according to calculations. The birefringence of SbB2O4F mainly originates from the highly distorted [SbO4] groups.

Abstract
Zero-order waveplates are widely used in the manufacture of laser polarizer waves, which are important in polarimetry and the laser industry. However, there are still challenges in designing deep-ultraviolet (DUV) waveplate materials that satisfy large band gaps and small optical anisotropy simultaneously. Herein, three cases of aluminum sulfate fluorides: Na2AlSO4F3, Li4NH4Al(SO4)2F4, and Li6K3Al(SO4)4F4, with novel [AlSO4F3] layers or isolated [AlS2O8F4] trimers were designed and synthesized by the rational assembly of [AlO2F4] and [SO4] groups through a hydrothermal method. Experiments and theoretical calculations imply that these three possess short cutoff edges (λ < 200 nm) and small birefringence (0.0014-0.0076 @ 1064 nm), which fulfils the prerequisite for potential DUV zero-order waveplate materials. This work extends the exploration of DUV zero-order waveplate materials to the aluminum sulfate fluoride systems.

Abstract
The first compound of cadmium-borate silicate Cd8(BO3)4SiO4, crystallizing in space group P42/n (no. 86), has been successfully synthesized by the conventional high-temperature solution method and melts congruently. The zero-dimensional anionic groups of Cd8(BO3)4SiO4 are isolated [BO3] triangles and isolated [SiO4] tetrahedra which are filled in the framework formed by [CdO6] polyhedra. It has a moderate birefringence (Δn = 0.053 at 546 nm), which is measured by experiment and evaluated by first-principles calculations; meanwhile, the source of birefringence is revealed through the response electronic distribution anisotropy method. The UV-vis-NIR diffuse reflectance spectrum indicates that Cd8(BO3)4SiO4 possesses a wide optical transparency range, with a UV cutoff edge at about 254 nm. This work enriches the structure chemistry of borate silicates, and we discussed the possible methods for the exploration and synthesis of novel optical crystals possessing zero-dimensional anionic groups in the borate silicate system.

Abstract
A new borophosphate, K2RbB8PO16 (KRBPO) was synthesized. It exhibits a bilayer structure consisting of two B-O layers with an 18-membered ring (18-MR) joined by [PO4], which is composed of the π-conjugated group [BO3] and non-π-conjugated groups [BO4] and [PO4]. The UV-vis-NIR diffuse reflectance spectroscopy shows that the cutoff edge is less than 200 nm. The calculation indicates that KRBPO exhibits moderate birefringence of 0.057@1064 nm, and the source of birefringence is mainly from the [BO3] groups.

Abstract
The vanadate (VO) polyhedron offers a compelling avenue for exploring birefringent materials within the infrared frequency range. Among many potential building blocks, the implementation of [VO3]∞ chains demonstrated great potential as effective birefringent functional units. In this article, we successfully synthesized the Li0.8Na0.2CsV2O6·H2O compound, which exhibits a remarkable birefringence of 0.134 at 546.1 nm, as confirmed by the experiment. Notably, the introduction of alkali metals in this compound led to a significantly shorter cutoff edge at 340 nm. Through a comprehensive investigation, Li0.8Na0.2CsV2O6·H2O has the shortest UV cutoff edge among all vanadates, whose birefringences are larger than 0.1, to the best of our best knowledge. This finding underscores the application potential of this novel material as a birefringent crystal.

Abstract
Birefringent crystals can modulate and detect the polarization of light and are important optical functional materials. The birefringence is positively correlated to the anisotropy of the structure. By partially substituting sulfate anion with large electronegative fluorine in the parent compound Y2(SO4)3·8H2O, a new fluorinated rare-earth sulfate YSO4F·H2O with enhanced anisotropy was achieved. YSO4F·H2O features a dense 3D structure constructed by the polarizable [YOF] polyhedra and [SO4] tetrahedra. The diffuse reflectance spectrum reveals that it has a short UV absorption edge of below 200 nm. The substitution of the F- ion enhances the optical anisotropy, making the material exhibit an enhanced birefringence (0.0357 at 546 nm), which is 5.1 times that of the parent compound and is also larger than most deep-UV birefringent sulfates. It is expected that this work may shed useful insights in the exploration of deep-UV birefringent materials with enhanced optical performances..

Abstract
The combination of π-conjugated groups [NO3] and Cl-centered polyhedra generates a new birefringent crystal with a perovskite-related framework, KRb2(NO3)2Cl, which is the first alkali metal nitrate chloride synthesized by a mild hydrothermal method. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group pbam (no. 55). In addition, KRb2(NO3)2Cl crystals with dimensions up to 7 × 1.5 × 1 mm3 were grown. Notably, KRb2(NO3)2Cl has a short UV cut-off edge (below 228 nm) and a significantly enhanced birefringence (Δn = 0.084 at 1064 nm). Theoretical calculations indicate that the birefringence enhancement mainly derives from π-conjugated [NO3] plane triangles.

Abstract
The first hydroxyfluorooxoborate-nitrate mixed anion compound, K5[B3O3F4(OH)]2(NO3), was synthesized by the solution evaporation method. It displays a unique structure built by K+ cations, the hydroxylated and fluorinated six-membered ring [B3O3F4(OH)] and [NO3] groups. It possesses a band gap of 5.68 eV derived from the diffuse reflectance spectrum, which corresponds to an ultraviolet cutoff edge of 218 nm. First-principles calculations show that it has a large birefringence of 0.095 at 532 nm and the result of the response electron distribution anisotropy method indicates that all three anion groups contribute positively to the birefringence, verifying the synergic contributions from the multiple anion groups.

Abstract
Salt-inclusion chalcogenides (SICs) have been receiving widespread attention due to their large second harmonic generation (SHG) responses and wide bandgaps, however most of them suffer from small birefringence limiting their technical application. Herein, by introducing the π-conjugated (S2 )2- units in the ionic guest of salt-inclusion structure, the first disulfide-bond-containing SIC, [Ba4 (S2 )][ZnGa4 S10 ] has been synthesized. It exhibits the widest bandgap up to 3.39 eV among polychalcogenides and strong SHG response as large as that of AgGaS2 (AGS). Importantly, its birefringence reaches a max value of 0.053@1064 nm among AGS-like SICs, indicating it is a promising IR nonlinear optical (NLO) material. Theoretical calculations reveal that the π-conjugated (S2 )2- units and covalent GaS layers favor the enhanced birefringence and large SHG response. This work provides not only a new type of SIC for the first time, but also new lights on the design of IR NLO materials.

Abstract
Optical anisotropy is pivotal for optical crystals, and it can be characterized by the maximum algebraic difference in refractive indices. Improving the optical anisotropy, especially for deep-ultraviolet (UV) crystals, is still a challenge and of interest. Herein, a new hydroxyfluorooxoborate, Rb[B3O3F2(OH)2], was obtained by the heterologous isomorphic substitution strategy. Dual enhancement for the band gap and birefringence compared with the parent A[B3O3F2(OH)2] (A = [Ph4P]/[Ph3MeP]) compounds was achieved in Rb[B3O3F2(OH)2]. This considerable enhancement originates from the removal of organic components and the retention of a birefringence-active anionic framework. This enhancement pushes the application region from UV to deep-UV. This discovery not only expands the structural chemistry of borates but also demonstrates the viability of heterologous isomorphic substitution to design deep-UV crystals with enhanced optical property.

Abstract
Performance enhancement induced by structural modification has long been the target in materials science fields. Direct evidence to witness the effectivity of one strategy is challenging and necessary. In this work, a tetrahedra-decoration strategy was proposed to improve the birefringent performance sharply, namely decorating the tetrahedra with a single linear [S2 ] unit. The strategy was verified by comprehensive characterization of two thiogermanates K2 BaGeS4 and K2 BaGeS5 , which crystallize in the same space group, have similar unit cells and the same units arrangements. Theoretical characterization verified that the [GeS5 ] group has much larger polarization anisotropy than [GeS4 ], further demonstrated that the linear [S2 ] led to the sharp birefringence enlargement of K2 BaGeS5 (0.19 vs 0.03 of K2 BaGeS4 ). This work provides a new guiding thought to improve the birefringence performance.

Abstract
The borate family is the main source of deep-ultraviolet (DUV) birefringent crystals, and it has attracted a lot of attention due to versatile [B-O] basic units. Herein, two new borate-based compounds Na6Mg3B10O18F6 and K3NaB10O16F2 were discovered. Their fundamental building blocks are [B5O11] and [B5O10F] units, respectively. The calculated results showed that the band gap and birefringence of K3NaB10O16F2 (Eg = 6.93 eV, Δn = 0.047 at 1064 nm) are greater than those of Na6Mg3B10O18F6 (Eg = 5.40 eV, Δn = 0.039 at 1064 nm). Furthermore, the effects of [B-O/F] units on band gap and birefringence were analyzed by the charge-transfer model and response electron distribution anisotropy method. The results show that introducing the [B-O/F] units can improve the band gap and birefringence. These findings will boost the exploration of DUV birefringent opticals.

Abstract
Polymorphism is a well-known but important phenomenon in the field of solid-state chemistry. Crystalline materials can form various polymorphs and present drastically varied physical and chemical properties. Herein, systematic exploration of the BaO-MoO3 binary system leads to the discovery of a new barium molybdate, α-BaMo3O10. The temperature-dependent phase transition from α-BaMo3O10 to β-BaMo3O10 is confirmed. The tunable linear and nonlinear optical properties induced by the phase transition are confirmed by both experimental and theoretical approaches. Also, β-BaMo3O10 is identified as a nonlinear-optical crystal for the first time. The origin of linear- and nonlinear-optical properties of BaMo3O10 polymorphs is confirmed by the additional theoretical means. This work indicates that a small change in the structure can induce tunable symmetries and thereby widely divergent optical properties.

The development of a data-driven science paradigm is greatly revolutionizing the process of materials discovery. Particularly, exploring novel nonlinear optical (NLO) materials with the birefringent phase-matching ability to deep-ultraviolet (UV) region is of vital significance for the field of laser technologies. Herein, a target-driven materials design framework combining high-throughput calculations (HTC), crystal structure prediction, and interpretable machine learning (ML) is proposed to accelerate the discovery of deep-UV NLO materials. Using a dataset generated from HTC, an ML regression model for predicting birefringence is developed for the first time, which exhibits a possibility of achieving fast and accurate prediction. Essentially, crystal structures are adopted as the only known input of this model to establish a close structure-property relationship mapping birefringence. Utilizing the ML-predicted birefringence which can affect the shortest phase-matching wavelength, a full list of potential chemical compositions based on an efficient screening strategy is identified. Further, eight structures with good stability are discovered to show potential applications in the deep-UV region, owing to their promising NLO-related properties. This study provides a new insight into the discovery of NLO materials and this design framework can identify desired materials with high performances in the broad chemical space at a low computational cost.

Abstract
Selective transformation between organic and inorganic systems is crucial but still remains a challenge. Herein, we demonstrated that selective organic-inorganic transformation is a simple but effective strategy to find new hydroxyfluorooxoborates. By replacing the [Ph4P]/[Ph3MeP] organic cations with Cs atoms, a new hydroxyfluorooxoborate Cs[B3O3F2(OH)2] with three-membered [B3O3F2(OH)2] clusters was synthesized. Theoretical analysis confirmed the effects of different components in the lattice of reported structure on the optical properties.

Abstract
The polarization modulation of deep-UV light is an important process that incorporates functionality to selectively respond to light-mater interaction. Typically, optical anisotropy is foremost to the use efficiency of deep-UV birefringent crystals. Herein, a new congruently melting polyborate with extremely large birefringence (Δn(001) =0.14@589.3 nm) and band gap (6.89 eV) is discovered as a high performance birefringent crystal, which breaks the current deadlock of deep-UV polyborates that usually show small birefringence. The rigid tetrahedra, including [ZnO4 ] and edge-sharing [BO4 ] tetrahedra, make all the planar [BO3 ] triangles in the lattice adopt preferential arrangement and thereby lead to an extraordinary large birefringence that is larger than all the deep-UV borates with experimentally measured values. Structural analyses with the additional theoretical calculations were used to study the origin of strong optical anisotropy in BaZnB4 O8 .

Abstract
Two new borate halides, Sn3B3O7X (X = Cl and Br), were successfully synthesized via introducing Sn2+ with lone-pair and halogen into borate. Interestingly, halogen-induced variable coordination modes of Sn2+ and anion frameworks make them crystallize in different space groups, from noncentrosymmetric (Pna21) to centrosymmetric (Pbca). Sn3B3O7Cl possesses an SHG response of about 0.5 times that of KDP, while Sn3B3O7Br exhibits a large birefringence (0.123@1064 nm). The theoretical calculations were performed to elucidate the structure-property relationships.

Abstract
Exploration of nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals that are competent in generating short-wavelength ultraviolet (UV, λ ≤ 266 nm, and even deep-UV, λ ≤ 200 nm) coherent light output by direct second harmonic generation (SHG) remains a formidable challenge. Herein, four UV/deep-UV NLO crystals, M2B4SO10 (M = K, Rb, and Cs) and Rb3B11PO19F3, were successfully synthesized by evolving the KBe2BO3F2 (KBBF) structure into mixed-anionic borosulfate and fluoroborophosphate systems. They display functional [B4SO10]∞ or [B11PO19F3]∞ KBBF-type layers that are composed of [BO3], [BO4], and [SO4] groups or [BO3], [BO4], [BO3F], and [PO4] groups, respectively. Experimental characterization and numerical computation results indicate that these crystals possess exceptional NLO performance, including large SHG responses (0.9-1.7 × KDP at 1064 nm and 0.1-0.3 × β-BBO at 532 nm) and adequate birefringence to fulfill the SHG phase-matching (PM) condition at 266 nm. In particular, the shortest type-I PM wavelength (λPM) of Rb3B11PO19F3 reaches 180 nm, which implies that Rb3B11PO19F3 can become a prospective deep-UV NLO crystal. In addition, single crystals of K2B4SO10, Rb2B4SO10, and Cs2B4SO10 are easily obtained by the high-temperature solution approach. This work will facilitate the discovery of short-wavelength PM NLO crystals by using the KBBF structure as the template.

Abstract
Fluorine-containing compounds have stimulated the exploration of ultraviolet/deep-ultraviolet nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. Alkali/alkaline-earth metal phosphates are one of the important potential systems as NLO materials, while the common small birefringence limits the phase-matching (PM) ability in the ultraviolet/deep-ultraviolet region. Herein, by applying a "fluorination synergy-induced enhancement of optical property" strategy, novel structures of phosphate fluoride/fluorophosphate in BePO3F with good thermodynamic/dynamic stability and promising NLO-related properties are discovered via performing crystal structure prediction combined with first-principles calculations. BePO3F-I-VI exhibit relatively large birefringence of 0.025, 0.048, 0.049, 0.049, 0.059, and 0.063 at 1064 nm, respectively. Simultaneously, BePO3F-I (Pc) is a new thermodynamically stable phosphate fluoride which possesses a wide band gap (Eg = 8.03 eV), large second-harmonic generation (SHG) coefficient (d11 = 0.67 pm/V, 1.7 × KDP), and the shortest PM wavelength of 292 nm. Other five thermodynamically metastable noncentrosymmetric (NCS) BePO3F structures (II-VI) belong to fluorophosphates and exhibit deep-ultraviolet PM wavelengths of 187, 183, 186, 188, and 196 nm. It reveals that the aligned nonbonding O 2p orbitals of [BeO2F2] and [PO4] units lead to a large SHG coefficient in the phosphate fluoride BePO3F-I. For fluorophosphates (BePO3F-II-VI), the synergy of [BeO3] planar units and [PO3F] units induces relatively large birefringence. Our research results provide an idea for exploring novel high-performance NLO materials.

Abstract
A new sodium hydroxyfluorooxoborate, NaB3O4F(OH) (NBOFH), was discovered and synthesized. NBOFH features the unprecedented [B3O4F(OH)] infinite chain constructed by the novel fundamental building block (FBB) of [B3O5F(OH)]. NBOFH has a large birefringence of 0.097 at 1064 nm and short ultraviolet (UV) cutoff edge below 200 nm. First-principles calculations and response electron distribution anisotropy (REDA) were performed to explain the structure-property relationships. This work provides a novel strategy for the synthesis of deep-ultraviolet birefringent crystals and enriches the structural diversity of the emerging hydroxyfluorooxoborates.

Abstract
Birefringent materials play indispensable roles in modulating the polarization of light and are vital in the laser science and technology. Currently, the design of birefringent materials operating in the deep-ultraviolet region (DUV, λ ≤200 nm) is still a great challenge. In this work, we developed a new DUV birefringent crystal LiBO2 based on [BO2]∞ infinite chains in the Li-B-O system, which simultaneously achieves the shortest UV cutoff edge (164 nm) and the largest birefringence (≥0.168 at 266 nm) among all the reported borate-based DUV birefringent materials. Single crystals of LiBO2 with dimensions up to Ø55 × 34 mm3 were grown by the Czochralski method, providing access to large-sized single crystal with low cost. Moreover, it has a high laser damage threshold and stable physicochemical properties. These outstanding characters unambiguously support that LiBO2 can be an excellent birefringent material for DUV application.

Abstract
Polarization modulation of deep-UV light is of significance to current technologies, and to this end, the birefringent crystal has emerged as an invaluable material as it allows for effective light modulation. Herein, a double-modification strategy driven by F and OH anions that makes double effects towards the critical property enhancement of deep-UV birefringent crystals is proposed. This leads to a new hydroxyborate (NH4 )4 [B12 O16 F4 (OH)4 ] with giant cluster as a deep-UV birefringent crystal with large birefringence (Δnexp. =0.12@546.1 nm). This birefringence is a record among inorganic hydroxyborates with experimentally measured birefringence. Structural analysis shows that the near-plane arrangement of [B12 O16 F4 (OH)4 ] cluster is responsible for the large optical anisotropy. Theoretical calculations indicate that its π-conjugated [BO3 ] and [BO2 OH] units are the main source of this large optical anisotropy.

Abstract
Infrared (IR) nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals are the major materials to widen the output range of solid-state lasers to mid-infrared regions, but they are still inadequate for application due to the difficulties in balancing the large band gaps and strong NLO response. The diamond-like structure is a potential structural template to explore IR NLO materials. Herein, a computational workflow is proposed for exploring compounds with diamond-like structures, a series of LiMgGaSe3 structures were predicted successfully through this workflow, and LiMgGaSe3-I-III exhibited good optical performances in a large band gap (2.75-2.92 eV), strong SHG response (1.2-1.3 × AGS), and suitable birefringence (0.0470-0.0783 at 1064 nm). The in-depth mechanism explorations strongly demonstrate that the synergistic effect of alkaline earth metal tetrahedral [MgSe4] and [GaSe4] units is the main origin of large SHG response. The foregoing results suggest that our workflow can accelerate the discovery of new mid-IR NLO materials with diamond-like structures.

Abstract
Birefringent materials play a significant role in modulating polarized light in optical communication and the laser industry. However, the discovery of deep ultraviolet (DUV, λ<200 nm) birefringent materials still faces a serious challenge. Herein, we propose hydroxylated π-conjugated [B(OH)3 ] and [B3 O3 (OH)3 ] units for designing DUV birefringent materials. Innovatively, four new hydroxyborates have been synthesized under mild synthesis conditions. They present four novel pseudo layers that benefit from the large degree of freedom assembly modes of [B(OH)3 ] and [B3 O3 (OH)3 ] genes and large birefringence (0.057-0.123@532 nm). Moreover, the Cs3 [B(OH)3 ]2 Cl3 crystal features a short DUV cutoff edge (180 nm), which further indicates that the reported compounds are potential DUV birefringent crystals. Free and flexible assembly modes of π-conjugated [B(OH)3 ] and [B3 O3 (OH)3 ] groups endow them a particular advantage as significant genes for exploring promising DUV birefringent materials.

Abstract
Deep-ultraviolet (DUV) nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals that can extend the output range of coherent light below 200 nm are pivotal materials for solid-state lasers. To date, KBe2BO3F2 (KBBF) is the only usable crystal that can generate DUV coherent light by direct second harmonic generation (SHG), but the layered growth habit and toxic ingredients limit its application. Herein, we report a new fluoroborophosphate, (NH4)3B11PO19F3 (ABPF), containing four different functional units: [BO3], [BO4], [BO3F] and [PO4]. ABPF exhibits a KBBF-like structure while eliminating the limitations of KBBF crystal. The unique [B5PO10F]∞ layers enhance ABPF’s performance; for example, it has a large SHG response (1.2 × KDP) and a sufficient birefringence (0.088 at 1064 nm) that enables the shortest phase-matching wavelength to reach the DUV region. Meanwhile, the introduction of strong B-O-P covalent bonds decreases the layered growth habit. These findings will enrich the structural chemistry of fluoroborophosphate and contribute to the discovery of more excellent DUV NLO crystals.

Abstract
Borophosphates are very known for the short ultraviolet (UV) cutoff edge and have become the promising UV and deep-UV functional crystals candidates; however, tetrahedral [PO4] and [BO4] groups own weak anisotropy of polarizability and are not conducive to large birefringence, which hinders their application in the short-wavelength region. Improving their birefringence without compromising the band gap is the main research objective. By introducing the excellent birefringent functional groups, such as [B2O5], [BO2]∞ chain, [B2Ox(OH)5-x], and so forth into borophosphates, seven borophosphates with improved birefringence were successfully synthesized (Δn > 0.05@532 nm). Remarkably, among them, the centimeter-sized crystal of Rb3B8PO16 with a short deep-UV cutoff edge (175 nm) and large birefringence (Δn(exp.) ∼ 0.072@589.3 nm) exhibits the shortest phase-matching wavelength (222 nm), which makes Rb3B8PO16 a promising UV NLO crystal, while KB6PO10(OH)4 with deep-UV cutoff edge features the largest birefringence (Δn(exp.) ∼ 0.103@546 nm) in the reported borophosphate system, making KB6PO10(OH)4 a promising deep-UV birefringent crystal. This study not only provides feasible strategies for increasing the birefringence of borophosphates but also pushes phase-matching into the short-wavelength region.

Abstract
Inorganic planar π-conjugated groups are advantageous to generate large birefringence in optical functional materials, and many excellent materials contain CO3, BO3 or B3O6, such as CaCO3, α/β-BaB2O4 (α/β-BBO), and KBe2BO3F2 (KBBF). In view of their microscopic structures, the common characteristics are the planar structures, which are regarded as birefringence-enhanced fundamental modules (FMs). Nowadays, exploring novel birefringence-enhanced FMs is becoming a burning issue. Herein, we investigated the birefringence-enhanced FMs in B–N systems and found that the BN2 linear unit could produce great birefringence. Through the investigation based on the Inorganic Crystal Structure Database, some compounds with the BN2 linear group were screened out with the formulas A3BN2 (A = Li, Na), A3BN3 (A = Mg, Ca), and Ba3(BN2)2. Particularly, Ca3(BN2)N exhibits a great birefringence of about 0.411 at 1064 nm, which is 3.5, 2.5 and 2.0 times those of the most commercially used birefringent crystals α-BaB2O4 (Δn = 0.116 at 1064 nm), CaCO3 (Δn = 0.164 at 1064 nm) and YVO4 (Δn = 0.208 at 1064 nm), respectively. To find the origins of the optical properties of compounds with the BN2 linear group, the first-principles, REDA and polarizability anisotropy analysis methods were used. Owing to the structural arrangement and the polarization anisotropy of the BN2 linear group, it can influence the birefringence significantly. This work will provide a general way for exploring birefringence-enhanced FMs in B–N compounds. The linear unit BN2 is discovered as a novel birefringence-enhanced fundamental module. Particularly, Ca3(BN2)N exhibits a large birefringence (0.411 at 1064 nm), which is about 2.0–3.5 times of the commercial used birefringent crystals, such as α-BaB2O4, CaCO3 and YVO4.![]()

Abstract
A new borate, Na2SrB16O26, was synthesized by the high-temperature solution method. It exhibits complicated interpenetrating 3D B-O frameworks composed of the functional building block (FBB) [B8O16]. The UV-vis-NIR diffuse reflectance spectroscopy shows that it has a deep-ultraviolet (DUV) cutoff edge (<200 nm). The relationship between the structures and optical properties was uncovered by theoretical calculations. By the first-principles calculation, the birefringence is estimated to be 0.07 at 1064 nm. The response electron distribution anisotropy (REDA) analysis indicates that the [BO3] units contribute mainly to the generation of the moderate birefringence.

Abstract
Three mixed-alkali-metal fluorooxoborates, KNaB3O4F3 (I), K2B3O4F3 (II), and KCsB3O4F3 (III), were acquired in a closed system. I-III are isomorphic and adopt orthorhombic structures [Pbcn (No. 60)] with wavy parallelly arranged pseudolayers composed of ∞1[B3O4F3] chains, which exhibit slight differences in the arrangement modes of the fundamental building blocks. First-principles calculations illustrate that they all have moderate birefringence and large band gaps on the order of 7.0 eV, suggesting deep-ultraviolet (DUV) cutoff edges. In order to investigate the main source of the optical properties, the electronic structure and anisotropy of the response electron distribution were analyzed. Experimental characterizations for I confirm the structure and DUV transparence ability.

Abstract
The enhancement of band gap and birefringence of template compounds can be attributed to this “tail effect” caused by the extended electronic distribution from [CO3]2−/[BO3]3−/[C3N3O3]3− to [HCO3]−/[HBO3]2−/[HC3N3O3]2−.
