Evolution Kinetics of Stabilizing Pickering Emulsion by Brush-Modified Janus Particles: DPD Simulation and Experimental Insights

In the present study, we report the evolution of stabilizing Pickering emulsions using brush-modified Janus particles (JPs), utilizing the dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulation technique. Our results are subsequently corroborated with experimental findings. Each JP has one-half of the hydrophobic surface, with the other half embedded with hydrophilic polymer brushes grown via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Our generic simulation model analyzes the chemical kinetics of polymer brush growth on one-half of the initiator-embedded microparticle (MP) surface, resulting in the formation of JP. This involves evaluating monomer conversion and reaction rates. Our results exhibit a substantial influence of the number of JPs, grafted brush density, and brush length on oil-in-water emulsion stability. We studied the evolution kinetics and stability of emulsion formation by analyzing the growth of average domain size and corresponding scaling functions up to a late time limit. This study aims to clarify the connection between the size, quantity, and functionality of JPs and the stability of Pickering emulsions.

Microstructures and Rheological Properties of Short-Side-Chain Perfluorosulfonic Acid in Water/2-Propanol

The viscosity and viscoelasticity of polyelectrolyte solutions with a single electrostatic interaction have been carefully studied experimentally and theoretically. Despite some theoretical models describe experimental results well, the influence of multiple interactions (electrostatic and hydrophobic) on rheological scaling is not yet fully resolved. Herein, we systematically study the microstructures and rheological properties of short-side-chain perfluorosulfonic acid (S-PFSA), the most promising candidate of a proton exchange membrane composed of a hydrophobic backbone with hydrophilic side-chains, in water/2-propanol. Small-angle X-ray scattering confirms that semiflexible S-PFSA colloidal particles with a length of ~38 nm and a diameter of 1-1.3 nm are formed, and the concentration dependence of the correlation length (ξ) obeys the power law ξ~c-0.5 consistent with the prediction of Dobrynin et al. By combining macrorheology with diffusing wave spectroscopy microrheology, the semidilute unentangled, semidilute entangled, and concentrated regimes corresponding to the scaling relationships ηsp~c0.5, ηsp~c1.5, and ηsp~c4.1 are determined. The linear viscoelasticity indicates that the entanglement concentration (ce) obtained from the dependence of ηsp on the polymer concentration is underestimated owing to hydrophobic interaction. The true entanglement concentration (cte) is obtained by extrapolating the plateau modulus (Ge) to the terminal modulus (Gt). Furthermore, Ge and the plateau width, τr/τe (τr and τe denote reptation time and Rouse time), scale as Ge~c2.4 and τr/τe~c4.2, suggesting that S-PFSA dispersions behave like neutral polymer solutions in the concentrated regime. This work provides mechanistic insight into the rheological behavior of an S-PFSA dispersion, enabling quantitative control over the flow properties in the process of solution coating.

Dissipative particle dynamics simulation study on ATRP-brush modification of variably shaped surfaces and biopolymer adsorption

We present a dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulation study on the surface modification of initiator embedded microparticles (MPs) of different shapes via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) brush growth. The surface-initiated ATRP-brush growth leads to the formation of a more globular MP shape. We perform the comparative analysis of ATRP-brush growth on three different forms of particle surfaces: cup surface, spherical surface, and flat surface (rectangular/disk-shaped). First, we establish the chemical kinetics of the brush growth: the monomer conversion and the reaction rates. Next, we discuss the structural changes (shape-modification) of brush-modified surfaces by computing the radial distribution function, spatial density distribution, radius of gyration, hydrodynamic radius, and shape factor. The polymer brush-modified particles are well known as the carrier materials for enzyme immobilization. Finally, we study the biopolymer adsorption on ATRP-brush modified particles in a compatible solution. In particular, we explore the effect of ATRP-brush length, biopolymer chain length, and concentration on the adsorption process. Our results illustrate the enhanced biopolymer adsorption with increased brush length, initiator concentration, and biopolymer concentration. Most importantly, when adsorption reaches saturation, the flat surface loads more biopolymers than the other two surfaces. The experimental results verified the same, considering the disk-shaped flat surface particles, cup-shaped particles, and spherical particles.

DPD Modelling of the Self- and Co-Assembly of Polymers and Polyelectrolytes in Aqueous Media: Impact on Polymer Science

This review article is addressed to a broad community of polymer scientists. We outline and analyse the fundamentals of the dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulation method from the point of view of polymer physics and review the articles on polymer systems published in approximately the last two decades, focusing on their impact on macromolecular science. Special attention is devoted to polymer and polyelectrolyte self- and co-assembly and self-organisation and to the problems connected with the implementation of explicit electrostatics in DPD numerical machinery. Critical analysis of the results of a number of successful DPD studies of complex polymer systems published recently documents the importance and suitability of this coarse-grained method for studying polymer systems.

Dissipative particle dynamics simulations in colloid and Interface science: a review

Dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) is one of the most efficient mesoscale coarse-grained methodologies for modeling soft matter systems. Here, we comprehensively review the progress in theoretical formulations, parametrization strategies, and applications of DPD over the last two decades. DPD bridges the gap between the microscopic atomistic and macroscopic continuum length and time scales. Numerous efforts have been performed to improve the computational efficiency and to develop advanced versions and modifications of the original DPD framework. The progress in the parametrization techniques that can reproduce the engineering properties of experimental systems attracted a lot of interest from the industrial community longing to use DPD to characterize, help design and optimize the practical products. While there are still areas for improvements, DPD has been efficiently applied to numerous colloidal and interfacial phenomena involving phase separations, self-assembly, and transport in polymeric, surfactant, nanoparticle, and biomolecules systems.

Structural properties of cationic surfactant-fatty alcohol bilayers: insights from dissipative particle dynamics

Bilayers, self-assembled by cationic surfactants and fatty alcohols in water, are the basic units of lamellar gel networks - creamy formulations extensively used in cosmetics and pharmaceutics. Mesoscopic modelling and study of the bilayers formed by single- or double-tail cationic surfactants (CTAC or DHDAC), and fatty alcohols (FAs) in the lamellar fluid and gel phases were employed. Fatty alcohols with alkyl tail equal to or greater than the surfactant alkyl tail, i.e., C₁₆FA or C₁₈FA and C₂₂FA, were considered. A model formulation was explored with the FA concentration greater than that of the surfactant and the structure of the fluid and gel bilayers in tensionless state characterised via the density profiles across the bilayers, orientational order parameters of the surfactant and FA chains, intrinsic analysis of the bilayer interfaces, and bending rigidity. The intrinsic analysis allows identification and quantification of the coexistence of the interdigitated and non-interdigitated phases present within the gel bilayers. The FA chains were found to conform the primary scaffolding of the bilayers while the surfactant chains tessellate bilayer monolayers from their water-hydrophobic interface. Further, the overlap of the FA chains from the apposed monolayers of the fluid bilayers rises with increasing FA length. Finally, the prevalence of the non-interdigitated phase over the interdigitated phase within the gel bilayers becomes enhanced upon the FA length increase with a preference of the surfactant chains to reside in the non-interdigitated phase rather than the interdigitated phase.

Closed-Form Coexistence Equation for Phase Separation of Polymeric Mixtures in Dissipative Particle Dynamics

To date, no extensive study of the phase diagram for binary fluid mixtures in dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) has been published. This is especially pertinent for newer parameterization schemes where the self-self interaction, or the effective volume, of different particle types is varied. This work presents an exhaustive study of the parameter space concerning DPD particles with soft interaction potentials. Moreover, we propose a closed-form coexistence equation or binodal curve that is inspired by the Flory-Huggins model. This equation describes the phase diagram of all binary mixtures made up out of monomers, homopolymers, and the mixtures thereof when self-self interactions are varied. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of the equation on simulated data, including validation simulations, is 1.02%. The equation can a priori predict the phase separation of mixtures using only DPD interaction parameters. The proposed coexistence equation can therefore be used to directly validate interaction parameters resulting from novel parameterization schemes, including coarse graining and equations of state, without the need for additional simulations. Finally, it is shown that the choice of bond potential markedly influences phase behavior.

Reversible multilayered vesicle-like structures with fluid hydrophobic and interpolyelectrolyte layers

Hydrophobic blocks of amphiphilic block copolymers often form glassy micellar cores at room temperature with a rigid structure that limits their applications as nanocapsules for targeted delivery. Nevertheless, we prepared and analyzed core/shell micelles with a soft core, formed by a self-assembled block copolymer consisting of a hydrophobic block and a polycation block, poly(lauryl acrylate)-block-poly(trimethyl-aminoethyl acrylate) (PLA-QPDMAEA), in aqueous solution. By light and small-angle neutron scattering, by transmission electron microscopy and by fluorescence spectroscopy, we showed that these core/shell micelles are spherical and cylindrical with a fluid-like PLA core and a positively charged outer shell and that they can encapsulate and release hydrophobic solutes. Moreover, after mixing these PLA-QPDMAEA core/shell micelles with another diblock copolymer, consisting of a hydrophilic block and a polyanion block, namely poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(methacrylic acid) (PEO-PMAA), we observed the formation of novel vesicle-like multicompartment structures containing both soft hydrophobic and interpolyelectrolyte (IPEC) layers. By combining small-angle neutron scattering with self-consistent field modeling, we confirmed the formation of these complex vesicle-like structures with a swollen PEO core, an IPEC inner layer, a PLA soft layer, an IPEC outer layer and a loose PEO corona. Thus, these multicompartment micelles with fluid and IPEC layers and a hydrophilic corona may be used as nanocapsules with several tunable properties, including the ability to control the thickness of each layer, the charge of the IPEC layers and the stability of the micelles, to deliver both hydrophobic and multivalent solutes.

Solubilization of Charged Porphyrins in Interpolyelectrolyte Complexes: A Computer Study

Using coarse-grained dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) with explicit electrostatics, we performed (i) an extensive series of simulations of the electrostatic co-assembly of asymmetric oppositely charged copolymers composed of one (either positively or negatively charged) polyelectrolyte (PE) block A and one water-soluble block B and (ii) studied the solubilization of positively charged porphyrin derivatives (P+) in the interpolyelectrolyte complex (IPEC) cores of co-assembled nanoparticles. We studied the stoichiometric mixtures of 137 A10+B25 and 137 A10-B25 chains with moderately hydrophobic A blocks (DPD interaction parameter aAS=35) and hydrophilic B blocks (aBS=25) with 10 to 120 P+ added (aPS=39). The P+ interactions with other components were set to match literature information on their limited solubility and aggregation behavior. The study shows that the moderately soluble P+ molecules easily solubilize in IPEC cores, where they partly replace PE+ and electrostatically crosslink PE- blocks. As the large P+ rings are apt to aggregate, P+ molecules aggregate in IPEC cores. The aggregation, which starts at very low loadings, is promoted by increasing the number of P+ in the mixture. The positively charged copolymers repelled from the central part of IPEC core partially concentrate at the core-shell interface and partially escape into bulk solvent depending on the amount of P+ in the mixture and on their association number, AS. If AS is lower than the ensemble average ⟨AS⟩n, the copolymer chains released from IPEC preferentially concentrate at the core-shell interface, thus increasing AS, which approaches ⟨AS⟩n. If AS>⟨AS⟩n, they escape into the bulk solvent.

Self-assembly of polyelectrolyte diblock copolymers within mixtures of monovalent and multivalent counterions

In this study, the self-assembly behavior of polyelectrolyte (PE) diblock copolymers in solutions containing mixtures of monovalent and multivalent counterions was investigated using molecular dynamics simulation. The properties of the assembled micelles and counterion condensations at different charge fractions of multivalent ions have been discussed. The bridging effect of multivalent ions induces the electrostatic correlations of the PE chains, leading to the fusion of large micelles and the formation of bulky aggregates. Notably, lamellar and well-organized face-centered cubic (FCC) arrangements of the assembled micelles were observed in the mixture of monovalent and trivalent ions. At large fractions of multivalent ions, cylindrical and lamellar precipitates composed of the assembled micelles were formed owing to the inter-connecting coronas. The mixtures of monovalent and multivalent counterions allow the regulation of the electrostatic interactions and tuning of the properties in assembled micelles.

Self-assembly of polyelectrolyte diblock copolymers at monovalent and multivalent counterions

In this work, the self-assembly behaviors of diblock copolymers consisting of one hydrophobic block and one ionizable polyelectrolyte (PE) block in the presence of monovalent and multivalent counterions are systematically discussed through molecular dynamics simulation. Copolymers are molded as bead-spring chains and the ions are explicitly considered. First, the self-assembled structures of symmetrical block copolymers at different charge fractions are analyzed in detail. Spherical hydrophobic cores are favored by all of the micelles. The effect of counterion valence is much more noticeable at high values of charge fraction. When the PE blocks are fully charged, the presence of multivalent counterions preferably provokes the formation of macroscopic structures. A precipitant spherical micelle is generated in the presence of divalent counterions. Special shapes of coronas are created in the presence of trivalent ions, and a remarkable one dimensional macroscopic cylindrical aggregation of micelles forms; the whole assembly is not typical core-shell micelles, but rather a cylinder with alternating spherical micelles arranged perpendicular to the cylinder axis. The self-assemblies with different lengths of fully charged PE blocks are also discussed. Surprisingly, in the presence of divalent counterions, two dimensional in-plane macroscopic aggregation of micelles is realized when the proportion of PE blocks is larger than 1/2; the self-assembled spherical micelles locate approximately in the same plane to form an inter-linked network. One dimensional aggregation of micelles in the presence of trivalent counterions is maintained with an increased proportion of the PE block. Owing to the dominant intra- and inter-condensation of divalent and trivalent counterions, respectively, two and one dimensional macroscopic aggregation of the micelles is achieved. Our findings indicate that varying the counterion valence is a powerful mechanism to tune the properties of self-assemblies, and the bridging effect introduced by multivalent counterions is the key parameter for the aggregation of the micelles.

Computer study of the solubilization of polymer chains in polyelectrolyte complex cores of polymeric nanoparticles in aqueous media

The formation and structure of nanoparticles containing non-polar polymer chains solubilized in interpolyelectrolyte complex (IPC) cores and the partitioning of non-polar chains between bulk solvent and IPC cores were studied by coarse-grained computer simulations. The choice of the model system was inspired by experimental results published by van der Burgh et al. (Langmuir, 2004, 20, 1073-1084). The dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulations reproduced the structure and basic features of co-assembled nanoparticles described by experimentalists well at the semi-quantitative coarse-grained level and revealed new properties of co-assembled particles. The simulated co-assemblies were used as reference systems for the solubilization studies. Their results show that non-polar polymers (electrically neutral and compatible with core-forming chains) solubilize easily in IPC cores. They intermix with polyelectrolyte blocks in cores and do not hinder, but, on the contrary, they slightly promote the electrostatic co-assembly.

Adsorption of amphiphilic graft copolymers in solvents selective for the grafts on a lyophobic surface: a coarse-grained simulation study

The sorption of graft copolymers on surfaces attractive only for the backbone and its effect on the conformational behavior of adsorbed/desorbed chains in solvents good for the grafts and poor for the backbone was studied by coarse-grained computer simulations.

Molecular interaction mechanisms in reverse micellar extraction of microbial transglutaminase

Reverse micellar extraction is an efficient and economical alternative for protein purification. In this study, microbial transglutaminase (MTGase) from crude materials was purified using reverse micellar extraction, and the molecular interaction mechanism in reverse micellar extraction of MTGase was explored. By using a molecular simulation study, the interaction mechanism of forward extraction was investigated. The molecular simulation results reveal the interaction of MTGase-water-surfactant is the major driving force for the forward extraction. Further, the effect of ionic strength on molecular interactions in backward extraction was investigated using 1H low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (LF-NMR) and circular dichroism (CD) spectra. In backward extraction, the interactions between water and the other two molecules (MTGase and surfactant molecules) are enhanced while the interactions between target molecules (MTGase) and the other two molecules (water and surfactant molecules) are weakened as the ionic strength increases. Moreover, the effect of size exclusion on backward extraction was also investigated. The results demonstrate size exclusion has limit effect at high ionic strength, and the weakened interaction of MTGase-water-surfactant is the main reason causing the release of the target molecules in backward extraction. This work might provide valuable reference to the MTGase purification and downstream processing.

Dynamics of Charged Species in Ionic-Neutral Block Copolymer and Surfactant Complexes

Structure-property relationships of ionic block copolymer (BCP) surfactant complexes are critical toward the progress of favorable engineering design of efficient charge-transport materials. In this article, molecular dynamics simulations are used to understand the dynamics of charged-neutral BCP and surfactant complexes. The dynamics are examined for two different systems: charged-neutral double-hydrophilic and hydrophobic-hydrophilic block copolymers with oppositely charged surfactant moieties. The dynamics of the surfactant head, tails, and charges are studied for five different BCP volume fractions. We observe that the dynamics of the different species solely depend on the balance between electrostatic and entropic interactions between the charged species and the neutral monomers. The favorable hydrophobic-hydrophobic interactions and the unfavorable hydrophobic-hydrophilic interactions determine the mobilities of the monomers. The dynamical properties of the charge species influence complex formation. Structural relaxations exhibit length-scale dependent behavior, with slower relaxation at the radius of gyration length-scale and faster relaxation at the segmental length-scale, consistent with previous results. The dynamical analysis correlates ion-exchange kinetics to the self-assembly behavior of the complexes.

Computer Simulation Studies on the pH-Responsive Self-Assembly of Amphiphilic Carboxy-Terminated Polyester Dendrimers in Aqueous Solution

This paper investigates the pH-responsive self-assembly of an amphiphilic carboxyl-terminated polyester dendrimer, H20-COOH, in aqueous solution using the dissipative particle dynamics method. The electrostatic interactions were described by introducing the explicit interaction between the smeared charges on ionized polymer beads and the counterions. The results show that the self-assemblies could change from unimolecular micelles, microphase-separated small micelles, wormlike micelles, sheetlike micelles, and small vesicles to large vesicles with the decrease in the degree of ionization (α) of carboxylic acid groups. In addition, the detailed self-assembly mechanisms and the molecular packing models have also been disclosed for each self-assembly stages. Interestingly, the wormlike micelles are found to change from linear to branched when α decreases from 0.182 to 0.109. The current work might serve as a comprehensive understanding on the effect of carboxylic acid groups on the self-assembly behaviors of dendritic polymers.
