Effect of substituting donors on the hole mobility of hole transporting materials in perovskite solar cells: a DFT study

Several hole-transporting materials (HTMs) have been designed by incorporating different types of π-conjugation group such as long chain aliphatic alkenes and condensed aromatic rings of benzene and thiophene and their derivatives on both sides between the planar core and donor of a reference HTM. Various electronic, optical, and dynamic properties have been calculated by using DFT, TDDFT, and Marcus theory. In this study, all the designed HTMs show a lower HOMO energy level and match well with the perovskite absorbers. Inserting condensed rings results in better hole mobility compared to aliphatic double bonds. It is found that the charge transfer integral is the dominant factor which mainly influences the hole mobility in our studied HTMs. Other factors such as hole reorganization energy, hole hopping rate, and centroid distance have a minor effect on hole mobility. Thus, this study is expected to provide guidance for the design and synthesis of new HTMs with increased hole mobility.

Enhancement of one- and two-photon absorption and visualization of intramolecular charge transfer of pyrenyl-contained derivatives

To further improve the pyrenyl-contained derivatives two-photon absorption (TPA) and third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties, three steps of optimization are employed based on experimental molecule PCVS-B: heteroatomic substitution, exchanging the position of double bonds and adding a branch. The contributions of π electrons to localized orbital locators and Mayer bond orders (LOL-π and I_AB^π) show that the second step can enhance the chemical interaction between pyrenyl and the branched-chain. Two visual methods of charge density difference (CDD) and transition density matrix (TDM) are combined to intuitively analyze the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) process of one (two) photon absorption; results show that both following two steps can increase the degree of ICT on the conjugated plane of the pyrenyl. The sum over state (SOS) model was used to find out the dominant two-photon transition process. The difference between the dipole moments obtained by the McRae equation is applied to the three-state model, revealing the inherent law of the second static hyperpolarizability.

Singlet and Triplet Excited State Energy Ordering in Cyclopenta-Fused Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (CP-PAHs) Suitable for Energy Harvesting: An Exact Model and TDDFT Study

We calculated the ground and low-lying excited states of cyclopenta-fused polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (CP-PAHs) using exact diagonalization in full configuration interaction (CI) within the model Pariser-Parr-Pople Hamiltonian as well as a time-dependent density functional theory technique. The CP-PAHs include acenapthylene, isomers of pyracylene, cycloocta-pentalene, and three isomers of dicyclo-pentacyclo-octenes (DCPCO). We used the inherent symmetries of these systems to calculate the energy ordering of the lowest singlet (S₁) and lowest triplet excited (T₁) states with respect to the ground state (S₀). The calculation shows that the lowest dipole allowed singlet absorption varies from 0.43 to 1.42 eV for most of these systems. Such an optical absorption range is very promising in harvesting solar radiation ranging from the visible to near-infrared region improving the efficiency of photovoltaic device application. The calculated optical gaps for pyracylene, acenapthylene, and two isomers of DCPCO are in very good agreement with experimental results reported in the literature. The calculated S₁-T₁ energy gaps (Δ_ST) in cycloocta-pentalene and in the DCPCO isomers are very small ranging from 0.01 to 0.2 eV, which is highly desirable in improving their electroluminescence efficiency in light-emitting device applications.
