Photoluminescent Characterization of Metal Nanoclusters: Basic Parameters, Methods, and Applications

Metal nanoclusters (MNCs) can be synthesized with atomically precise structures and molecule formulae due to the rapid development of nanocluster science in recent decades. The ultrasmall size range (normally < 2 nm) endows MNCs with plenty of molecular-like properties, among which photoluminescent properties have aroused extensive attention. Tracing the research and development processes of luminescent nanoclusters, various photoluminescent analysis and characterization methods play a significant role in elucidating luminescent mechanism and analyzing luminescent properties. In this review, it is aimed to systematically summarize the normally used photoluminescent characterizations in MNCs including basic parameters and methods, such as excitation/emission wavelength, quantum yield, and lifetime. For each key parameter, first its definition and meaning is introduced and then the relevant characterization methods including measuring principles and the revelation of luminescent properties from the collected data are discussed. Then, it is discussed in details how to explore the luminescent mechanism of MNCs and construct NC-based applications based on the measured data. By means of these characterization strategies, the luminescent properties of MNCs and NC-based designs can be explained quantitatively and qualitatively. Hence, this review is expected to provide clear guidance for researchers to characterize luminescent MNCs and better understand the luminescent mechanism from the measured results.

Visible to NIR-II Photoluminescence of Atomically Precise Gold Nanoclusters

Atomically precise gold nanoclusters (NCs) have emerged as a new class of precision materials and attracted wide interest in recent years. One of the unique properties of such nanoclusters pertains to their photoluminescence (PL), for it can widely span visible to near-infrared-I and -II wavelengths (NIR-I/II), and even beyond 1700 nm by manipulating the size, structure, and composition. The current research efforts focus on the structure-PL correlation and the development of strategies for raising the PL quantum yields, which is nontrivial when moving from the visible to the near-infrared wavelengths, especially in the NIR-II regions. This review summarizes the recent progress in the field, including i) the types of PL observed in gold NCs such as fluorescence, phosphorescence, and thermally activated delayed fluorescence, as well as dual emission; ii) some effective strategies that are devised to improve the PL quantum yield (QY) of gold NCs, such as heterometal doping, surface rigidification, and core phonon engineering, with double-digit QYs for the NIR PL on the horizons; and iii) the applications of luminescent gold NCs in bioimaging, photosensitization, and optoelectronics. Finally, the remaining challenges and opportunities for future research are highlighted.

H-bond-induced luminescence enhancement in a Pt1Ag30 nanocluster and its application in methanol detection

Hydrogen bonding is an important type of interaction for constructing nanocluster assemblies. In this study, the role of hydrogen bonding interactions in regulating the fluorescence properties of nanoclusters is investigated. A [Pt₁Ag₃₀(SAdm)₁₄(Bdpm)₄Cl₅]³⁺ (Pt₁Ag₃₀ for short) nanocluster containing hydrogen-accepting ligands is synthesized and its structure is determined. By introducing N-containing ligands into nanoclusters, hydrogen bonding interactions between nanoclusters and polar solvents can be established, which can result in a 35-fold enhancement in the fluorescence intensity (in MeOH vs. in DCM). A series of experiments are designed to demonstrate hydrogen bonding interactions between N atoms in the Pt₁Ag₃₀ cluster and H in the polar solvent and the results show that fluorescence enhancement is derived from the proton-coupled/uncoupled electron transfer between hydrogen bonds. Furthermore, this Pt₁Ag₃₀ is used for the naked-eye detection of MeOH on indicator paper.

Toward Controlling the Electronic Structures of Chemically Modified Superatoms of Gold and Silver

Atomically precise gold/silver clusters protected by organic ligands L, [(Au/Ag)_x L_y ]^z , have gained increasing interest as building units of functional materials because of their novel photophysical and physicochemical properties. The properties of [(Au/Ag)_x L_y ]^z are intimately associated with the quantized electronic structures of the metallic cores, which can be viewed as superatoms from the analogy of naked Au/Ag clusters. Thus, establishment of the correlation between the geometric and electronic structures of the superatomic cores is crucial for rational design and improvement of the properties of [(Au/Ag)_x L_y ]^z . This review article aims to provide a qualitative understanding on how the electronic structures of [(Au/Ag)_x L_y ]^z are affected by geometric structures of the superatomic cores with a focus on three factors: size, shape, and composition, on the basis of single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. The knowledge accumulated here will constitute a basis for the development of ligand-protected Au/Ag clusters as new artificial elements on a nanometer scale.

Inverse heavy-atom effect in near infrared photoluminescent gold nanoclusters

Fluorophores functionalized with heavy elements show enhanced intersystem crossing due to increased spin-orbit coupling, which in turn shortens the fluorescence decay lifetime (τPL). This phenomenon is known as the heavy-atom effect (HAE). Here, we report the observation of increased τPL upon functionalisation of near-infrared photoluminescent gold nanoclusters with iodine. The heavy atom-mediated increase in τPL is in striking contrast with the HAE and referred to as inverse HAE. Femtosecond and nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy revealed overcompensation of a slight decrease in lifetime of the transition associated with the Au core (ps) by a large increase in the long-lived triplet state lifetime associated with the Au shell, which contributed to the observed inverse HAE. This unique observation of inverse HAE in gold nanoclusters provides the means to enhance the triplet excited state lifetime.

Terahertz Raman Spectroscopy of Ligand-Protected Au8 Clusters

For ligand-protected gold clusters, geometrical differences of gold cores and/or the presence of secondary gold core-ligand interactions influence their unique optical and electronic properties and can, in principle, be detected by spectral changes of gold core vibrations (phonon modes) in ultralow-frequency Raman spectroscopy. We report experimental and theoretical Raman spectra of Au₈ clusters protected by phosphine ligands particularly in the "gold cluster fingerprint" region from 50 to 150 cm^-1 Raman shift (1.5 to 4.5 terahertz, THz). A characteristic core breathing mode observed at ca. 123 cm^-1 was sensitive to differences of core geometries. A new band was found at ca. 150 cm^-1, originating from a local strain on a polyhedral gold core caused by weak Au···π interactions. THz Raman spectroscopy can be utilized for metal nanoclusters to visualize core structural changes and Au···π interactions, which cannot be captured by single crystal X-ray analysis.

An overview on the current understanding of the photophysical properties of metal nanoclusters and their potential applications

Photophysics of atomically precise metal nanoclusters (MNCs) is an emerging area of research due to their potential applications in optoelectronics, photovoltaics, sensing, bio-imaging and catalysis. An overview of the recent advances in the photophysical properties of MNCs is presented in this review. To begin with, we illustrate general synthesis methodologies of MNCs using direct reduction, chemical etching, ligand exchange, metal exchange and intercluster reaction. Due to strong quantum confinement, the NCs possess unique electronic properties such as discrete optical absorption, intense photoluminescence (PL), molecular-like electron dynamics and non-linear optical behavior. Discussions have also been carried out to unveil the influence of the core size, nature of ligands, heteroatom doping, and surrounding environments on the optical absorption and photophysical properties of metal clusters. Recent findings reveal that the excited-state dynamics, nonlinear optical properties and aggregation induced emission of metal clusters offer exciting opportunities for potential applications. We discuss briefly about their versatile applications in optoelectronics, sensing, catalysis and bio-imaging. Finally, the future perspective of this research field is given.

Tailoring the photoluminescence of atomically precise nanoclusters

Due to their atomically precise structures and intriguing chemical/physical properties, metal nanoclusters are an emerging class of modular nanomaterials. Photo-luminescence (PL) is one of their most fascinating properties, due to the plethora of promising PL-based applications, such as chemical sensing, bio-imaging, cell labeling, phototherapy, drug delivery, and so on. However, the PL of most current nanoclusters is still unsatisfactory-the PL quantum yield (QY) is relatively low (generally lower than 20%), the emission lifetimes are generally in the nanosecond range, and the emitted color is always red (emission wavelengths of above 630 nm). To address these shortcomings, several strategies have been adopted, and are reviewed herein: capped-ligand engineering, metallic kernel alloying, aggregation-induced emission, self-assembly of nanocluster building blocks into cluster-based networks, and adjustments on external environment factors. We further review promising applications of these fluorescent nanoclusters, with particular focus on their potential to impact the fields of chemical sensing, bio-imaging, and bio-labeling. Finally, scope for improvements and future perspectives of these novel nanomaterials are highlighted as well. Our intended audience is the broader scientific community interested in the fluorescence of metal nanoclusters, and our review hopefully opens up new horizons for these scientists to manipulate PL properties of nanoclusters. This review is based on publications available up to December 2018.

Phosphine-Ligated Gold Clusters with Core+ exo Geometries: Unique Properties and Interactions at the Ligand-Cluster Interface

Over recent years, research on the structures and properties of ligand-protected gold cluster molecules has gained significant interest. The crystal structure information accumulated to date has revealed the structural preference to adopt closed polyhedral geometries, but the use of multidentate ligands sometimes leads to the formation of exceptional structures. This Account describes results of our studies on diphosphine-coordinated [core+ exo]-type gold clusters featuring extra gold atoms outside the polyhedral cores, highlighting (1) their distinct optical properties due to the unique electronic structures generated by the exo gold atoms and (2) electronic/attractive ligand-cluster interactions that cause definite perturbation effects on the cluster properties. Subnanometer gold clusters with [core+ exo]-type geometries (nuclearity = 6, 7, 8, and 11) commonly displayed single absorption bands in the visible region, which are distinct in patterns from those of conventional polyhedral-only homologues. Theoretical studies demonstrated that the exo gold atoms are critically involved in the generation of unique electronic structures characterized by the HOMO-LUMO transitions with dominant oscillator strengths, leading to the appearance of the isolated absorption bands. On the basis of the frontier orbital distributions, the HOMO and LUMO were shown to be localized around the polyhedral cores and exo gold atoms, respectively. Therefore, the HOMO-LUMO transitions responsible for the visible absorptions occur in the core → exo direction. The HOMO-LUMO gap energies showed no clear trends with respect to the nuclearity (size), indicating that the individual geometric features of the inorganic framework primarily govern the clusters' electronic structures and properties. Systematic studies using octagold clusters bearing various anionic coligands revealed that electronic or attractive interactions between the gold framework and ligand functionalities, such as π-electron systems and heteroatoms, cause substantial perturbations of the wavelength of the visible absorption band due to the HOMO-LUMO transitions. Especially, significant red shifts were observed as a result of the electronic coupling with specific π-resonance contributors. It was also found that the orientation of aromatic rings around the inorganic framework is a factor that affects the cluster photoluminescence. These findings demonstrate the utility of the ligand moieties surrounding the gold frameworks for fine-tuning of the optical properties. During these studies, unusual but definite attractive interactions between the gold framework and C-H groups of the diphosphine ligand were found in the hexagold clusters. On the basis of careful crystallographic and NMR analyses, these interactions were deemed as a certain kind of M···H hydrogen bonds, which critically affect the maintenance of the cluster framework. Such unique interaction activities are likely due to the valence electrons in the gold framework, which serve as the hydrogen-bond acceptor for the unfunctionalized C-H groups. Overall, these observations imply the uniqueness of the ligand-cluster interface associated with the partially oxidized gold entities, which may expand the scope of ligand-protected clusters toward various applications.

Size specific emission in peptide capped gold quantum clusters with tunable photoswitching behavior

Three different types of fluorescent gold clusters (namely blue, green and red emitting) have been prepared from a gold precursor (chloroauric acid) under moderate conditions in aqueous medium. A cysteine containing dipeptide has been used for the formation of these quantum clusters as this peptide molecule contains a thiol group in the side chain to cap these nascently formed clusters and the free amino and carboxylic moieties assist in water solubility. Thus, the clusters are also environmentally friendly as the capped peptide is made up of only naturally occurring protein amino acids. These clusters have been well characterized by using UV-visible, fluorescence, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS)spectroscopy, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and ultrahigh resolution field emission gun-transmission electron microscopy (UHR-FEG-TEM). Arrangements of gold atoms and their interaction with the corresponding ligands in three different fluorescent clusters have been predicted computationally. The excited state behavior of three different clusters has also been studied using time dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). Time correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) and computational studies suggest intersystem crossing (S₁ → T₁) in the case of red-emitting Au₂₃ clusters. Interestingly, these gold clusters exhibit semiconducting and photoswitching properties (I_on/I_off), which are shown to be controlled by varying the size of these clusters. This holds future promise of using these gold cluster based nanomaterials for optoelectronic applications.

Understanding energy transfer with luminescent gold nanoclusters: a promising new transduction modality for biorelated applications

AuNCs engage in energy transfer by a non-Förster process although many of the same photophysical requirements are needed.

Ligand-Based Toolboxes for Tuning of the Optical Properties of Subnanometer Gold Clusters

Recent advances in the crystal structure determination of ligand-protected metal clusters have revealed that their electronic structures and optical features are essentially governed by the nuclearity and geometries of the inorganic frameworks. In this Perspective, we point out the definite effects of the exterior ligand moieties on the properties of small gold clusters. On the basis of systematic experimental studies on the optical properties of Au₈ and Au₁₃ clusters with various anionic ligands, it was shown that not only the "through-bond" electronic effects of coordinating atoms but also the nonbonding interaction with neighboring heteroatoms and the electronic coupling with π-systems cause substantial perturbations. We also suggest that the steric rigidity of the ligand environments affects their photoluminescence efficiencies. These findings imply the feasibility of the facile modulation of the cluster properties through the appropriate choice of ligand modules, which may lead to the evolution of novel cluster-based materials with unique properties and functions.
