Boundary-Monte Carlo Method for Neutral and Charged Confined Fluids

In this work, we describe a new Monte Carlo (MC) simulation method to investigate highly coupled fluids in confined geometries at a constant chemical potential. This method is based on so-called multi-scale Hamiltonian methods, wherein the chemical potential is determined using a more amenable Hamiltonian for a fluid in an "outer" region, which facilitates standard methods, such as grand canonical MC simulations or Widom's particle insertion method. The (inner region) fluid of interest is placed in diffusive contact with the simpler outer fluid via a boundary zone wherein the Hamiltonian is transformed. The current method utilizes an ideal fluid for the outer regions, which allows for implicit rather than explicit simulations. Only the boundary and inner region need explicit consideration; hence, the nomenclature used is boundary-Monte Carlo. We illustrate the utility of the method for simple neutral and charged fluids in cylindrical and planar pores. In the latter case, we use a dense room-temperature ionic liquid model and illustrate how the boundary zone establishes a proper Donnan equilibrium between inner and outer fluids in the presence of charged planar electrodes. Thus, the method allows direct calculation of properties such as the differential capacitance, without the need for additional difficult calculations of the requisite Donnan potential.

Different Hydrogen Bond Changes Driven by Surface Segregation Behavior of Imidazolium-Based Ionic Liquid Mixture at the Liquid-Vacuum Interface

In this work, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were carried out to study the behaviors of a binary ionic liquid (IL) mixture consisting of equimolar [C₂C₁Im][BF₄] and [C₄C₁Im][BF₄], as well as two corresponding pure ILs, at the liquid-vacuum interface. Our simulation results show that the competition of nonpolar interactions between different alkyl chains of two cations results in an obvious surface segregation behavior of the IL mixture at the interface, indicating an enhanced aggregation of the [C₄C₁Im]⁺ cations but a weakened aggregation of the [C₂C₁Im]⁺ cations at the outermost surface. More interestingly, different hydrogen bond (HB) changes between two imidazolium cations at the interface can be driven by such surface segregation behavior, where the [C₂C₁Im]⁺ cations rather than the [C₄C₁Im]⁺ ones have more and stronger HBs with the [BF₄]^- anions by comparison with the corresponding pure ILs at the interface. Meanwhile, it is interesting to find that such a stronger HB would lower the rotations of the imidazolium rings of interfacial [C₂C₁Im]⁺ cations. By contrast, the [C₄C₁Im]⁺ cations at the outermost surface rotate faster owing to their weaker HB. In addition, the orientation analysis uncovers that there is a major decrease for the orderliness of interfacial [C₂C₁Im]⁺ cations, but a minor decrease for that of interfacial [C₄C₁Im]⁺ cations, from the pure IL to the IL mixture. Such distinct results are closely related to the surface segregation between the [C₂C₁Im]⁺ and [C₄C₁Im]⁺ cations in the IL mixture and their interfacial HB properties. Thus, our simulation results afford a deep insight into the surface segregation effect on the HB behavior of the imidazolium-based IL mixture at liquid-vacuum interface.

Microstructural and Dynamical Heterogeneities in Ionic Liquids

Ionic liquids (ILs) are a special category of molten salts solely composed of ions with varied molecular symmetry and charge delocalization. The versatility in combining varied cation-anion moieties and in functionalizing ions with different atoms and molecular groups contributes to their peculiar interactions ranging from weak isotropic associations to strong, specific, and anisotropic forces. A delicate interplay among intra- and intermolecular interactions facilitates the formation of heterogeneous microstructures and liquid morphologies, which further contributes to their striking dynamical properties. Microstructural and dynamical heterogeneities of ILs lead to their multifaceted properties described by an inherent designer feature, which makes ILs important candidates for novel solvents, electrolytes, and functional materials in academia and industrial applications. Due to a massive number of combinations of ion pairs with ion species having distinct molecular structures and IL mixtures containing varied molecular solvents, a comprehensive understanding of their hierarchical structural and dynamical quantities is of great significance for a rational selection of ILs with appropriate properties and thereafter advancing their macroscopic functionalities in applications. In this review, we comprehensively trace recent advances in understanding delicate interplay of strong and weak interactions that underpin their complex phase behaviors with a particular emphasis on understanding heterogeneous microstructures and dynamics of ILs in bulk liquids, in mixtures with cosolvents, and in interfacial regions.

Local Grand Canonical Monte Carlo Simulation Method for Confined Fluids

We describe a new local grand canonical Monte Carlo method to treat fluids in pores in chemical equilibrium with a reference bulk. The method is applied to Lennard-Jones particles in pores of different geometry and is shown to be much more accurate and efficient than other techniques such as traditional grand canonical simulations or Widom's particle insertion method. It utilizes a penalty potential to create a gas phase, which is in equilibrium with a more dense liquid component in the pore. Grand canonical Monte Carlo moves are employed in the gas phase, and the system then maintains chemical equilibrium by "diffusion" of particles. This creates an interface, which means that the confined fluid needs to occupy a large enough volume so that this is not an issue. We also applied the method to confined charged fluids and show how it can be used to determine local electrostatic potentials in the confined fluid, which are properly referenced to the bulk. This precludes the need to determine the Donnan potential (which controls electrochemical equilibrium) explicitly. Prior approaches have used explicit bulk simulations to measure this potential difference, which are significantly costly from a computational point of view. One outcome of our analysis is that pores of finite cross-section create a potential difference with the bulk via a small but nonzero linear charge density, which diminishes as ∼1/ln(L), where L is the pore length.

Spectroscopic and computational insights into the ion-solvent interactions in hydrated aprotic and protic ionic liquids

Ionic liquids (ILs) and their aqueous solutions are emerging media for solving and manipulating biochemical molecules such as proteins. Unleashing the full potential however requires a detailed mechanistic understanding of how suitable protic and aprotic ILs behave in the presence of water in the first place. The present work aims at making an important step by performing a combined experimental and computational study of two selected ILs and their mixtures with water: the aprotic cholinium propionate ([Chl][Pro]) and the protic N-methyl-2-pyrrolidonium propionate ([NMP][Pro]). IR and Raman spectroscopy reveal stronger ion-solvent interactions in [Chl][Pro]-H₂O systems compared to [NMP][Pro]-H₂O mixtures. This can be explained by the tightly packed ion-pair associations in [NMP][Pro] comprising the protic -N⁺-H counterpart, which allows the establishment of highly directional and strong interionic hydrogen bonds. The spectral decomposition of the O-D stretching band into three sub-peaks showed that the protic [NMP][Pro] favors the self-association of water molecules. On the other hand, the predominant fraction of water-anion/cation aggregates exists in aprotic [Chl][Pro]. These hydrated systems can be envisaged using quantum-chemical calculations in the following way: H₂O[Chl]⁺H₂O[Pro]^-H₂O and H₂O[NMP]⁺[Pro]^-H₂O, which implied preferable solvent-shared ion-pair (SIP) configurations for [Chl][Pro]-H₂O systems, whereas the contact ion-pair (CIP) state prevails for the [NMP][Pro]-H₂O systems. The latter holds even in the water-rich regime. In future work, these findings will be the basis for an understanding of the underlying principles that govern the interactions of ions with bio-molecules in aqueous solutions.

Emerging Evidences of Mesoscopic-Scale Complexity in Neat Ionic Liquids and Their Mixtures

Ionic liquids (ILs) represent a blooming class of continuously developing advanced materials, with the aiming of a green chemical industry. Their appealing physical and chemical properties are largely influenced by their micro- and mesoscopic structure that is known to possess a high degree of hierarchical organization. High-impact application fields are largely affected by the complex morphology of neat ionic liquids and their mixtures. This Perspective highlights new arising research directions that point to an enhanced level of structural complexity in several IL-based systems, including mixtures. The latter represent a change in paradigm in the approach to formulate new, task-specific IL-based media, and the reported phenomenology has the potential to further expand their range of applications by calling for a revisitation of the nature of interactions in these exciting media.
