Weakly bound complexes of 1,2,3-triazole with nitrogen and carbon dioxide isolated in solid argon: A combined FT-IR matrix isolation and theoretical investigation

Matrix isolation FT-IR spectroscopy was combined with quantum-chemical calculations in order to characterize complexes of 1,2,3-triazole (3TR) with nitrogen and carbon dioxide. Geometries of the possible 1:1 and 1:2 complexes, as well as 3TR dimers, were optimized at the DFT (B3LYP-D3) level of theory with the 6-311++G(3df,3pd) basis set. Six different 3TR⋯N2 structures of the 1:1 stoichiometry were optimized which are characterized by weak hydrogen bonds (N-H⋯N and C-H⋯N) and/or Van der Waals type interactions (N⋯C, N⋯N, N⋯π). Two the most stable geometries, both containing a N-H⋯N bridge, were identified experimentally in solid argon. As for 3TR⋯CO2 complexes, out of two minima located on the potential energy surface, only one with a strongly bent N-H⋯O hydrogen bond was detected in the matrix after deposition. In both cases, only annealing experiments at 32 K resulted in the formation of small amounts of 1:2 structures.

Decomposition of triazole and 3-nitrotriazole upon low-energy electron attachment

Compounds based on nitrotriazole have been studied for their application as potential radiosensitizers for the treatment of tumors and as energetic materials. In the former application, the initial reduction of the compounds may serve as a mechanism which leads to the formation of tumor-active species. In this study, we investigated the fundamental properties of anion formation in isolated 3-nitro-1,2,4-triazole (3NTR) molecules upon attachment of low-energy electrons. The resulting product anions formed were detected via mass spectrometry. Quantum chemical calculations were performed to study the dissociation pathways and to derive the threshold energies. We also studied the attachment of electrons to the native 1H-1,2,4-triazole (TR) molecule, revealing the influence of the nitro group on anion formation. Comparing the results for these two systems, we computationally observed a considerable more stable parent anion for 3NTR, which results in significantly more effective degradation of the molecule at lower electron energies. Although characteristic fragmentation reactions in the presence of the nitro group were observed (like formation of NO2- or the release of an OH radical), the main dissociation channel for the 3NTR anion turned out to be the direct dissociation of a hydrogen radical by a single bond cleavage, which we also observed for TR as the main channel. Thus, the triazole ring shows a pronounced stability against electron attachment-induced cleavage compared, for example, to the imidazole ring, which is found in common nitroimidazolic radiosensitizers.

In silico design of a new Zn-triazole based metal-organic framework for CO2 and H2O adsorption

In search for future good adsorbents for CO₂ capture, a nitrogen-rich triazole-type Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) is proposed based on the rational design and theoretical molecular simulations. The structure of the proposed MOF, named Zinc Triazolate based Framework (ZTF), is obtained by replacing the amine-organic linker of MAF-66 by a triazole, and its structural parameters are deduced. We used grand-canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations based on generic classical force fields to correctly predict the adsorption isotherms of CO₂ and H₂O. For water adsorption in MAF-66 and ZTF, simulations revealed that the strong hydrogen bonding interactions of water with the N atoms of triazole rings of the frameworks are the main driving forces for the high adsorption uptake of water. We also show that the proposed ZTF porous material exhibits exceptional high CO₂ uptake capacity at low pressure, better than MAF-66. Moreover, the nature of the interactions between CO₂ and the MAF-66 and ZTF surface cavities was examined at the microscopic level. Computations show that the interactions occur at two different sites, consisting of Lewis acid-Lewis base interactions and hydrogen bonding, together with obvious electrostatic interactions. In addition, we investigated the influence of the presence of H₂O molecules on the CO₂ adsorption on the ZTF MOF. GCMC simulations reveal that the addition of H₂O molecules leads to an enhancement of the CO₂ adsorption at very low pressures but a reduction of this CO₂ adsorption at higher pressures.

Design and synthesis of photoluminescent active interpenetrating metal-organic frameworks using N-2-aryl-1,2,3-triazole ligands

N-2-aryl-1,2,3-triazole derivatives were synthesized as new ligand systems for the construction of photoluminescent active metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Crystal structures revealed that the five-membered triazoles show an unsymmetrical conformation with the two C4,C5-substituted benzenes adopting a "twisted-planar" geometry. As a result, a MOF constructed from this ligand exhibited cross-layer interactions with improved water stability (at 100 °C for 24 hours). Furthermore, enhanced photoluminescence emissions were observed upon the formation of MOF structures (Φ up to 30%), suggesting the potential applications of these photoactive porous materials through this new ligand design.

Complexes of Zn(II)-Triazoles with CO2 and H2O: Structures, Energetics, and Applications

Using a first-principle methodology, we investigate the stable structures of the nonreactive and reactive clusters formed between Zn²⁺-triazoles ([Zn²⁺-Tz]) clusters and CO₂ and/or H₂O. In sum, we characterized two modes of bonding of [Zn²⁺-Tz] with CO₂/H₂O: the interaction is established through (i) a covalent bond between Zn²⁺ of [Zn²⁺-Tz] and oxygen atoms of CO₂ or H₂O and (ii) hydrogen bonds through N-H or C-H of [Zn²⁺-Tz] and oxygen atoms of H₂O or CO₂, N-H···O. We also identified intramolecular proton transfer processes induced by complexation. Indeed, water drastically changes the shape of the energy profiles of the tautomeric phenomena through strong lowering of the potential barriers to tautomerism. The comparison to [Zn²⁺-Im] subunits formed with Zn²⁺ and imidazole shows that the efficiency of Tz-based compounds for CO₂ capture and uptake is due to the incorporation of more accessible nitrogen donor sites in Tzs compared to imidazoles. Since [Zn²⁺-Tz] clusters are subunits of an organometallic nanoporous materials and Zn-proteins, our data are useful for deriving force fields for macromolecular simulations of these materials. Our work also suggests the consideration of traces of water to better model the CO₂ sequestration and reactivity on macromolecular entities such as pores or active sites.

Encapsulation of anticancer drug doxorubicin inside dendritic macromolecular cavities: First-principles benchmarks

By using first-principles approaches based on Density Functional Theory, we explore the possibility of using dendritic macromolecular structures as carriers of the doxorubicin anticancer drug. In particular, we consider macromolecular cavities of different sizes composed of phenylene-, thiophene-, phenyl-cored thiophen- and thioazole-based dendrimers. The comparison between the optimized molecular geometries of the monomers and of the host-guest complexes reveals that only slight structural changes are observed in doxorubicin upon complexation. Also, the encapsulation energies for the host-guest complexes suggest that these systems are of potential use for pharmacology applications in vivo. The interaction of the guest doxorubicin with the macromolecular cavities exploits different types of weak intermolecular forces including σ, π and hydrogen bond interactions. The electronic structure of these complexes is discussed, with particular emphasis placed on the role of the charge distribution and the nature of the frontier molecular orbitals in the encapsulation process. Spectroscopic properties of these complexes are derived to facilitate their detection in laboratory and in vivo. These include IR vibrational frequencies, absorption wavelengths and relative oscillator strengths for the main transitions in the UV-Vis spectrum.

Lennard-Jones Intermolecular Potentials for the Description of 6-Membered Aromatic Heterocycles Interacting with the Isoelectronic CO2 and CS2

We have generated Lennard-Jones potentials for the interaction between CX₂ (X = O, S) and 11 nitrogen-doped benzene derivatives in different orientations at the M06-2X/def2-tzvpp level as tools to parametrize accurate force fields and to better understand the interaction of these greenhouse gases with heterocyclic building blocks used in the design of capture and detection systems. We find that the most favorable interactions are found between the carbon in CO₂ and the main heterocycle in the ring in a parallel orientation, whereas the preferred interaction mode of CS₂ is established between sulfur and the π density of the aromatic ring. The fact that the preferences for interaction sites and orientations of CO₂ and CS₂ are most of the times opposite helps in terms of ensuring the selectivity of these systems in front of these two isoelectronic compounds. The existence of very good linear correlations ( R² values very close to one) between the number of nitrogen atoms in the heterocyclic ring and the depth of the interaction potential wells opens the door to the use of these results in generating coarse-grained potentials or models with predictive power for use in the design of larger systems.

Insights on the interaction of Zn2+ cation with triazoles: Structures, bonding, electronic excitation and applications

At present, we investigate the structures, the stability, the bonding and the spectroscopy of the Zn²⁺-triazole complexes (Zn²⁺-Tz), which are subunits of triazolate based porous materials and Zn-enzymes. This theoretical work is performed using ab initio methods and density functional theory (DFT) where dispersion correction is included. Through these benchmarks, we establish the ability and reliability of M05-2X+D3 and PBE0+D3 functionals for the correct description of Zn²⁺-Tz bond since these DFTs lead to close agreement with post Hartree-Fock methods. Therefore, M05-2X+D3 and PBE0+D3 functionals are recommended for the characterization of larger organometallic complexes formed by Zn and N-rich linkers. For Zn²⁺-Tz, we found two stable σ-type complexes: (i) a planar structure where Zn²⁺ links to unprotonated nitrogen and (ii) an out-of-plane cluster where carbon interacts with Zn²⁺. The most stable isomers consist on a coordinated covalent bond between the lone pair of unprotonated nitrogen and the vacant 4s orbital of Zn²⁺. The roles of covalent interactions within these complexes are discussed after vibrational, NBO, NPA charges and orbital analyses. The bonding is dominated by charge transfer from Zn²⁺ to Tz and intramolecular charge transfer, which plays a vital role for the catalytic activity of these complexes. These findings are important to understand, at the microscopic level, the structure and the bonding within triazolate based macromolecular porous materials and Zn-enzymes.

Potential of ultramicroporous metal–organic frameworks in CO2 clean-up

This article explains the need for energy-efficient large-scale CO₂ capture and briefly mentions the requirements for optimal solid sorbents for this application.

CO2 Complexes with Five-Membered Heterocycles: Structure, Topology, and Spectroscopic Characterization

In a first step toward the rational design of macrocyclic structures optimized for CO₂ capture, we systematically explored the potential of 30 five-membered aromatic heterocycles to establish coordinating complexes with this pollutant. The interactions between the two moieties were studied in several orientations, and the obtained complexes were analyzed in terms of electron density and vibrational fingerprint. The former is an aid to provide an in-depth knowledge of the interaction, whereas the latter should help to select structural motifs that have not only good complexation properties but also diagnostic spectroscopic signals.
